Department: Undergraduate - New Brunswick Years of Service: 7 Years at RBS Job Duties: I provide academic advising for half of the junior class – approximately 700 students; recruiting and advising prospective transfer students – hosting information sessions, visiting NJ community college campuses, working with NJ community college transfer advisors, leading registration, advising and registration sessions for new, external transfer students.

I am currently completing a dissertation in the Rutgers Graduate School of Education to earn a Doctorate in Education - Ed.D. Expected dissertation defense June, 2021. Dissertation topic - “Needs of Parents of University Students on the Autism Spectrum.”

My proudest and most important role is as the stepfather to 3 amazing stepdaughters and father to a wonderful son.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this? I am a sports junkie. My alternate career, if I wasn’t working in higher education, would be to work as a sportswriter or sportscaster on radio or TV. What would you name the autobiography of your life?

My autobiography title would be “What a Long, Strange Trip it’s Been.”

What television show or movie are you ashamed to admit that you love? I am a huge fan of gangster movies, including The Godfather Trilogy and Goodfellas. I also love James Bond and Mission Impossible.

Program Spotlight:

Ma s t er s in Quan t it a t ive Finance

Celebrating 20 years is a momentous feat for any program. The Master of Quantitative Finance Program, under the leadership of Dr. Yangru Wu, remains a top ranked Quant program in a growing field. With 20 years behind them, the program is setting their sights on the next 20 years. The goals of the program are to continue to attract the brightest students, remain competitive and unique, and to continue to build relationships with their alumni.

As the program continues to grow, there is a need to diversify their student base. Attracting students from around the country and the world has been an asset to the program and its students. Under the guidance of Program Coordinator, Thomas Hill, the MQF program identified areas of growth in the market. With a student population trending international and male, the goal is to attract more domestic and female students. They know a diverse student population brings diverse ideas to the classroom. In response to market trends, the program recently added classes on Machine Learning in Finance, Block Chain & Cryptocurrency, and Financial Forecasting and Simulations. These classes complement popular electives on Hedge Funds and Indexing & ETFS. Staying interesting and relevant to what prospective students are looking for has been a goal of Dr. Wu. Known for providing an outstanding student experience, the program has a long-term strategy of connecting personally with each student because they know they are more likely to be productive alumni if they feel a connection to the program . In addition to taking the required Career Management course, students are encouraged to participate in competitions, experiential learning, and internships. In her short time at RBS, Career Counselor Marcye McFadden, has increased the contact between students and potential employers.

Keep your eye on the MQF program. It is not a program that is satisfied with resting on its laurels.

Did You Know?

Honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg Rutgers has officially renamed the iconic 15 Washington Street building on the Newark Campus as Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hall. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who would have celebrated her 88th birthday on March 15th, was a law professor for Rutgers from 1963 to 1972 before serving as Supreme Court Justice from 1993 until her death on September 18, 2020. As a lifelong advocate for equal rights, gender equality, and justice, she wrote to the acting President of the University in 1971, Richard Schlatter, making a case for Rutgers College to admit women. A year later, Rutgers became coed.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hall served as the center for Law and Justice between 1975 - 1999. The 92 year old building was vacant for 15 years before reopening its doors in the Fall of 2015. Today the 17-story building serves as housing for over 300 students and home of Newark Chancellor, Nancy Cantor.

NJIT’s Vaccine Distribution Site As of April 19, 2021, COVID vaccines will available for all ages 16 and older. Since Rutgers is in the planning stages of vaccine distribution, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)’s FEMA Vaccine Site is an option.

The site has the capacity to give up to 6,000 doses per day, seven days per week, and is taking residents from Newark and surrounding neighborhoods (Essex. Union, Elizabeth, Hudson, Passaic, etc)

RUPD Crime Prevention Tips As the warmer weather arrives and COVID-19 vaccines are becoming more available, people will likely start venturing out more. Please review the crime prevention tips below and take precautions to keep you and your family safe.

Denying a criminal the opportunity to commit a crime is paramount to your personal security.

• Be aware of your surroundings and avoid isolated or dark areas. Keep your head up while walking. Pay attention to the actions and behaviors of those around you.

• Trust your instincts. Keep your cell phone readily available in an accessible pocket with pre-programmed police emergency numbers. Report suspicious activity or persons to the police immediately.

• Never leave wallets, purses, and other personal property of value (laptops, cell phones) visible in your office, car or unattended in public places.

• Always lock your home or office door when you leave, even if “for just a minute.” This is the single best deterrent to intruders.

• Reduce the amount of cash and credit cards you carry with you. Do not use ATMs at night.

• Lock your vehicle and do not hide spare keys under your car. Do not carry your name, address, or car license number on your key ring.

• Set the home address in your smartphone, GPS, and other devices to an address near your home, but not to your actual home address. And enable remote wipe for your smart phone so you can delete personal information remotely if it is ever lost or stolen.

• Do not overshare on social media.

• Be ready to take defensive action if necessary. If you think you are being followed, go to a well-lit, public space. This could be as simple as crossing the street and entering a populated area or driving to the nearest police station.

• Record serial numbers of bicycles, computers or other electronics, and keep these numbers in a safe place, separate from the devices. In the event these devices are lost or stolen, these serial numbers may assist the Police with locating your property.

• Remember that excessive alcohol consumption is a major contributor to both victimization and crime.

COVID-19 Testing Continues As the country expands efforts to vaccinate all adults in record time, COVID weekly testing continues weekly for those on campus, even if you are fully vaccinated.

Step 1: Prepare your main document in Outlook

Go to Mailings > Start Mail Merge > E-mail Messages.

Step 2: Set up your mailing list The mailing list is your data source. For more info, see Data sources you can use for a mail merge.

Step 3: Link your mailing list to your email message Step 4: Add personalized content to the email message Step 5: Preview and finish Step 6: Save the personalized message Tips • If you don’t have a mailing list, you can create one during mail merge.

• If you’re using an Excel spreadsheet, format the ZIP Codes or postal codes column as text to preserve any zeros. For more info see Format mail merge numbers, dates, and other values in Excel.

• If you want to use your Outlook contacts, make sure Outlook is your default email program and the same versions as Word.

HR News Kathleen Connelly Harmon Retires After 40+ years, our colleague and friend Kathleen Connelly Harmon has retired from Rutgers. Contributing towards the success of our Executive MBA program, the following have shared these kind words: “Kathleen’s attention to detail, her diligence and dedication, and her conscientiousness while working in EMBA, are now “industry standards.” Above all, no matter how trying the situation, or how grave the crisis – and at the EMBA weeks-in-residence we have seen them all, from 9/11 to snowstorms to floods – she has never been ruffled. Her cool and steady calm, and her “grace under pressure” has never wavered, no matter what. Quite simply, she has been the rock on which our EMBA program – The Powerhouse – has been built.

I consider it a personal privilege to have had the opportunity of having worked with her over the last several decades at RBS. She is being missed already by Team EMBA and ALL of us...but I have told her that Rutgers EMBA is like Hotel California. “You can check out, but you can never leave,” and that we hope to be calling on her and seeing her in the years to come. - Farrokh Langdana For the past quarter of a century, Kathleen has been the administrative backbone of the Tax Program.

Whenever students have had an administrative issue or problem, my immediate response has been as follows: please see/contact Kathleen. Whatever the issue/problem would then somehow magically disappear.

But the truth was that these administrative matters via uttering the incantation “hocus pocus” or through the wave of magical wand would get resolved. Instead, it was through Kathleen’s tireless efforts that students’ demanding needs were met. On the one hand, I wish to thank Kathleen for making my job so much easier; on the other hand, I now have to do the impossible, namely, engage in the impossible task of finding Kathleen’s replacement. My closing message to Kathleen can be captured in the following words: THANK YOU for everything; you are truly wonderful; I, my current, students, and all the Tax Program graduates would be no where without you. - Jay Soled Thank you, Kathleen, for your dedication and service to Rutgers! RBS Family Mourns the Loss of Dawn M. Gist A beautiful memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 27th to honor the life and legacy of Dawn Monique Gist. The fitting tribute was livestreamed on Facebook with many RBS colleagues in attendance. For 16 years, Dawn was the face of the Management and Global Business department at 1 Washington Park. In her role as Department Administrator, Dawn provided support and service to faculty, staff, and students. She was a proud graduate of Rutgers University-Newark, with a degree in Psychology. A person of strong faith, Dawn was also a champion for motivating and inspiring others.

Colleague and close friend, Brenda Anderson, Program Coodinator, Dean’s Office, shares her personal reflection: April 14, 2021, Dawn Monique Gist gained her wings and made her transition from earth to heaven (or from labor to reward). She was a woman of many attributes and talents, but she prioritized her life based on her principals which were God first, family, church and work. During her time at RBS, Dawn truly exemplified the four pillars of RBS: • • • •

Responsible – To the MGB department, colleagues, friends, church and community.

Resilient – Able to pivot and bounce back expeditiously.

Resourceful – She had many talents, in and outside of RBS, and was often the go-to person for many.

Reinvent – Dawn was constantly developing herself, from receiving her degree in Psychology, taking courses in real estate and working to revitalize communities.

Professional Development & Committee Updates Coffee & Conversations RBS staff members were pleasantly surprised on Friday, March 5th, National Appreciation Day, when Dean Lei joined our monthly Coffee & Conversations virtual social hour. Recognizing National Staff Appreciation Day, Dean Lei thanked staff for their hard work, sacrifice and support. Dean Lei praised employees for their patience during this challenging year and noted that she continues to be impressed by the levels of commitment, assistance and encouragement coworkers are providing. The informal gathering shifted focus and jumped right into one of its favorite topics: popular television series. Yvette Del Valle, Program Coordinator, Office of Diversity Programs, took a moment to thank Monique DeSilva, Administrative Assistant, PhD Programs, for her plant cuttings and gardening tips, and proudly displayed her thriving spider plant for all to see.

On Friday, April 2nd, an eager group of RBS staff members joined the Coffee & Conversations virtual hour, and the participants clearly had “spring fever,” talking about the weather, favorite springtime recipes and gardening. Our own, unofficial, in-house, expert, Jeremy Guenter, Admissions Coordinator, MITA Program, shared lots of helpful tips for producing a bountiful vegetable garden. Debra Toti, Administrative Assistant, Undergraduate Programs – NB, shared exciting information about East Brunswick Grow, a FREE Seed Library joint project by the East Brunswick Public Library and Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission.

Finance-Pro Employee Charging Instructions (ECI) It is the responsibility of the hiring department to ensure employee charging instructions are updated after the record is approved in HCM. This is particularly important when: 1. Salary is charged to a grant or other external sources 2. The PI will not receive an accurate budget report if salaries are not accurately reflected in the project budget 3. Salary is part of cost-sharing commitment for awarded grant 4. An existing record is used for a new appointment 5. Salary is being charged to multiple sources For more information on Employee Charging Instructions, visit here.

Procurement Forms Update The procurement forms repository has been updated and starting July 1, 2021 the new forms will be mandatory for use and the old forms will be rejected. Please begin using the updated forms now by visiting: https://procurementservices.rutgers.edu/resources/forms.

The new revised forms are: • Statement of Work • Supplemental Statement of Work • Independent Contractor or Employee Determination (ICED) • Informal Bid Intake • Waiver of Bid Request

All required forms (ICED, Statement of Work) must have a current date and signature. You cannot re-use a form from 2020 for work that is being done in 2021. The MarketPlace Approver should be reviewing the attachments before approving the REQ. The REQ will be returned by Procurement if the forms are not signed/dated correctly further delaying the process.

Amazon Purchases Not Reimbursable On Expense Reports Please be reminded all Amazon orders are required to be placed via the Amazon punchout in Marketplace.

Personal reimbursements for purchases made with a personal credit card from Amazon are not reimbursable on expense reports. Reimbursement requests for these purchases are subject to review and audit, and some cases may result in non-reimbursement.

Facilities Giving Day Website Features RBS March 24, 2021 was annual Giving Day at the University.

If you were able to donate, you may have noticed that the contribution confirmation page features our very own 100 Rockafeller Road, 1st Floor Lobby. Over 400 members of the RBS community came together and raised $144,978 in 24 hours in honor of #RUGivingDay. Team-RBS achieved over a 300% increase from last year.

Arm Pulls Installed in 100Rock Restrooms Doors are one of the most frequently touched surfaces in the workplace. The hands-free restroom door openers recently installed in the North Tower restrooms allow you to open the door using your forearm (or wrist) so you don’t have to worry about transferring germs from the door handle to your bare hands. This is in addition to the Rutgers custodial staff sanitizing “high touch areas” continuously, and just one more way RBS leadership is ensuring the health and safety of its learning community. This sanitary, hands-free door pull design incorporates ease-of-use and safety: the angle is effective for pulling, but also allows for a quick-slip release to prevent injury.

On Campus Activity If you plan to visit an RBS building during the telecommute, please remember that building check-in procedures, such as completing the RBS Building Activity Log and the University myCampus Pass are still required. If you plan to be on campus regularly, the University requires test weekly for COVID-19. For more details, please reach out to the RBS-Facilities Team (rbs-facilities@business.rutgers.edu).

Congratulations Doctor Greeley!

Congratulations to former staff, now Faculty member, Luke Greeley. On March 5th, Luke passed his dissertation defense completing his PhD degree in Education.

The title of my dissertation is Toward a Reconceptualization and Revitalization of Consumer Education, where I use historical and ethical analysis to argue that we need to do a better job in the United States of educating consumers for economic, social, and environmental reasons.”

by John Renaldo, Career Counseling Officer, Office of Career Management Congratulations to our RBS next-door neighbors on the Livingston Campus.

RU basketball was just one of 26 schools to make both the Men’s and Women’s 2021 NCAA tournament – and one of only five Big 10 schools. It was no surprise the Lady Scarlet Knights made it to the dance again. Head coach C. Vivian Stringer led her squad to a 17th NCAA tournament appearance during her RU tenure and the 26th time overall for the program.

The men’s program, led by head coach Steve Pikiell, overcame last year’s unlikely ending of having the tournament canceled, by earning a bid for the first time in three decades – and just the 7th March Madness appearance in program history. When he took over the troubled program just over five years ago, coach Pikes said “I believe in Rutgers. I believe we will dance.” At that time, the team had lost 33 of its previous 34 conference games and many thought he was crazy. In addition to winning on the court, both programs are getting it done in the classroom, as each program’s cumulative GPA is over 3.2. Just recently a combined 17 student-athletes from RU basketball were recognized by the Big Ten Conference as Winter 2021 Academic All-Conference award winners, including RBS’s Luke Nathan (Marketing ‘21), a three-time Big Ten All-Academic honoree.

Suffice to say, like RBS our Livingston campus neighbors are headed in the same direction – highly ranked among the best schools in the Big Ten and the U.S. – and will continue to aim for greater heights in the future under passionate leadership. When asked to describe his team this season, coach Pikiell stated, “I would say resilient would be a good term for our team”. Perhaps coach Pike saw the writing on the RBS walls!

Staff Shared Recipes Lemon Garlic Salmon Shared by Jenean Wicker, Administrative Assistant, MBA Programs Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

1/2 tbsp kosher salt 1/4 tbs lemon pepper 4 6-oz. salmon fillets 4 tbs olive oil, divided 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 tbs chopped fresh dill 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice Serve with couscous, rice or pasta

Instructions 1.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly coat a shallow baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

2.

Place fish, skin side down, in baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and lemon pepper; drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the oil; set aside.

3.

Heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat.

4.

Add garlic; sauté 5 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.

Pour over salmon.

5.

Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork.

6.

Serve with couscous, rice or pasta.

Women’s History Month Has there been a woman in your life who has inspired you to reach for the stars? Well, Women’s History Month is the perfect time to tell that story. There have been many famous women, from all cultures, throughout the annals of time who have shaped the course of history around the world.

Women’s History Month began as International Women’s History Day in 1911, then grew to Women’s History Week in Sonoma, California in 1980, and then became Women’s History Month, which was recognized by the United States in 1978 under President Jimmy Carter. In this age of rapid technology and global internet access, poetry is here to remind us to pause, understand and appreciate the world around us.
