RBS Across the Map This summer has brought new changes to Rutgers Business School across the state of New Jersey. This Fall, Our Jersey City Off Campus location has moved to 89 York Street, approximately two blocks from our previous space in downtown Jersey City. NJSmall Business Development Center - Northwest has also relocated from Hackettstown to “The Station” in Chatham, NJ. In all, RBS spans over five townships (Newark, Pisacataway, Jersey City, Morristown, and Chatham) and in eight different buildings (1 Washington Park, 100 Rockafeller Road, 25 James Street, 30 Knightsbridge Road, 89 York Street, Janice Levin Building, Morristown, and “The Station” (Chatham).

Program Coordinator Department: Finance & Economics, Road to Wall Street Program Years of Service: 4 years this October What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this?

Definitely something with counseling or sexual education. In high school, I was a Hi-Tops Peer Educator and in college, I volunteered at the student health center running education classes for various organizations. I would love to continue this at Rutgers so if anyone knows a contact, please let me know.

What are three words that describe you and why?

• Fun – Always try to have a good time • Realistic – I say this all the time at work, maybe too much • Go-with-the-flow What are your hobbies outside of work?

I’ve always had a strong passion for cooking. I truly feel most comfortable in a kitchen, whether it’s meal prepping for the week or making Thanksgiving dinner for my entire family with my mom and grandma.

What you do you want others to know about you?

I love meeting new people and learning about their stories/experiences.

If your life story was made into a book or a movie, what would the title be (and why)?

“Let’s Talk” – a book about all the amazing/different/interesting people in my life and their stories.

Do you have a favorite quote or words of advice to share with RBS coworkers?

“No amount of guilt can change the past and no amount of fear can predict the future.”

Albert Turner Senior Admissions Officer Department: MBA Admissions Years of Service: 13 years. However, in a different capacity and if I were to be grandfathered; which they don’t do here, it would be 20 years and 2 months.

Job Duties: My role as a Sr. Admissions Officer, which internally and not official in HR unfortunately is Asst. Director of Graduate Admissions. Our office oversees all of the applications of those prospective students that have expressed interest in one of our many Graduate Programs. I provide detail and insight in aiding them not only in the admissions process, but address any questions that they may possess as returning back to school. I aid in the recruitment of our MBA students, and focus on attracting more diverse underrepresented minority talent into our MBA program. Something that is severely lacking. I am the first line of tech support in our office as I am the liaison to our OIT group. The tech role has always been my responsibility since 2001 and the primary reason for joining the Office of Graduate Admissions initially. Then, with having good mentors who are no longer with RBS, got involved working with our underrepresented student minority population. Began working on recruitment goals and strategy with my then Asst.

Director, Jan Morrell, who oversaw all diversity engagement and recruitment. This as mentioned, is a pure passion of mine. Seeing the students win is one thing. But, seeing my poorly represented Black and Brown constituents succeed, and by way of myself and others helping them gain admission into our MBA program, and guide them along the way once they’ve established themselves, just hits different and is very rewarding.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this? As much as I hate the realm, I’d be in politics and fighting for civil rights policies across the board and would probably end up like those in other states who were heinously killed for their stance within the last 7 -8 years. It’s a sad reality, but a truthful one. It’s important to me, and for me to fight for change. Where others see it, or me as a nuisance and it’s probably due to their lack of concern, cowardice and way of self-preservation; who knows? However, for speaking up for disparities and inequality, and pointing out flaws in their unethical approach to matters and improving upon diversity is critical.

What are the three words that best describe you? Fighter, Passionate, Too Loyal (My belief and practice has always been to take care of your people. That being your family and staff that can sometimes become family and others first. Even if you have to short yourself sometimes for them to eat. If I eat, we all eat. Even if my portion is less. “When worst comes to worst, my people come first.”)

What television show or movie are you ashamed to admit that you love? Phineas and Ferb cartoon on Disney XD. I’m a big kid at heart. And as far as movies, if it wasn’t for my close female peers in my office, that doggone sad behind Notebook. They got me to watch it and sadly enough I liked it but never again.

What would you name the autobiography of your life? Chasing My Ghosts If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? First, it depends on the lottery and the amount.

However, if we’re speaking of the big money lottery for a few hundred million, I’d get an attorney that deals with lottery winnings and pay extra or take less rather from the lottery commission by way of the attorney to keep anonymity. Create a trust and provide some to family, charities within reason and establish a foundation for scholarships for underrepresented minorities and single mothers who desire to go to school but have not support. Plus, seek partners to create an HBCU in New Jersey.

Program Spotlight:

Office of Men t oring Prog ram s The Office of Mentoring Programs (OMP) at Rutgers Business School extends business education beyond the four walls of a classroom by providing opportunities for students and business professionals to engage in meaningful mentoring relationships. Our programs include one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, and leadership development programs for both undergraduate and MBA students. They provide necessary professional exposure and development opportunities for students, as well as build strong and sustainable connections with Rutgers alumni and the broader business community.

This past January, Sangeeta Rao, Assistant Dean, and Hannah Salto, Program Coordinator, presented to over 65+ faculty and staff members. Their presentation focused on the goals of various mentoring programs under OMP, highlighted outcomes for students and mentors, shared information on our mentoring software platform, and discussed how RBS department faculty and staff can involve professionals in their networks in these high-impact programs.

Tech Tip: Creating a QR Code Looking to connect with your students who are constantly on the go? Are you trying to find ways to become more interactive with your audience? QR codes have increasingly been used due to the pandemic to provide ‘contactless’ resources, such as dining menus when dining out, public surveys, sending payments and much more. RBS Undergrad Advisors have been using this QR code technology to counsel students this semester. Check out these steps to create your own QR code: 1. Visit go.rutgers.edu 2. Cairns Did you know that stacked stones on a trail or beach are called Cairns?

Since ancient times, rock balancing has been used by some societies as directional markers, for burial purposes, or to signify that a traveler is on the right path. For modern stone stackers, it is simply a form of creative expression; a way to leave a mark that you were there. But some environmentalists believe balancing stones disturbs the soil and makes an area more prone to erosion, and that it could destroy the homes of insects and animals.

HR News RBS Mourns the Loss of Marcie Werner As you all know, we lost our dear colleague and friend, Marcie Werner, this past July. Marcie had served as the program administrator for the online Governmental Accounting Program for the past seventeen years.

Her husband, the late Robert Werner, was instrumental in establishing the program at RBS. Over the years, I could see how she wanted to keep his memory alive by making sure that she helped our students succeed. I have been so touched by the many notes I have received from our students and alumni on how much they appreciated her friendly voice and assistance. I will certainly miss my dear friend, Marcie. - Irfan Bora, Director of Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting I met Marcie when I began working at Rutgers many years ago. We’ve always been suitemates. Marcie was not just my co-worker; she was my friend. I spent many mornings standing in her doorway, just chatting. We talked about everything from our kids, our love of QVC, recipes (and eating...she loved eating), problem-solving for our programs, Rutgers football, her mom, and so much more. I can’t imagine going back into the office and Marcie not being there. I could not possibly express the immense loss I feel because it’s simply too much for me to articulate. But I will say this, Marcie loved 3 things for sure, 1. her son Jonathan, 2. her husband Bob, and 3. Rutgers. She was highly committed to the Governmental Accounting Program, and RBS will feel the loss of such a committed and dedicated staff member. Marcie was one of a kind and will be missed by many. – Trudy-Ann Hewitt, Sr. Program Coordinator, MACCY FInancial Marcie was my next door neighbor on the 5th Floor of 100 Rock. There was not a day where we didn’t kibbutz about our families (especially our sons), general Rutgers business, or just life in general. Some days when we were both very busy, I would just say, “Hi” and ask to use her pencil sharpener since it was the only one on campus. Some days, we would speak for an hour.

I was shocked to find out that she had been sick for a long time. It was heartbreaking to know I will no longer be sharing stories with her. But I will always remember the good ones. I will miss her !!! - Evan Wasserman, Assistant Professor, Accounting & Information Systems

You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.” - Renee Wood Marcie was one of the brightest lights at the Rutgers Business School. Her smile and cheery disposition were infectious. I’ve known Marcie since the early 2000’s when her late husband, Bob Werner started the MAACY Governmental Accounting program. Bob & Marcie were truly dedicated to the program and the students.

Finance-Pro Procurement Tips & Tricks: Closing Purchase Orders for Deactivated Suppliers When a supplier has been deactivated in Marketplace and an open PO exists, take the following steps to close the PO: 1. Go to Forms in RU Marketplace and find: Change Order PO Close/Cancel 2. Use any active supplier name and the actual PO number to close 3. Under notes write, “this supplier is no longer active, please close the PO” 4. Remember to use a valid gl accounting string to “carry” the form through the system

Facilities Event and Activity Certification System In an email from Tony Calcado, all events, planned activities, conferences, and non-credit academic programs hosted on University property organized for 25 or more people through December 31st require certification through the University Event and Activity Certification System (EACS). This process applies to on-campus events held during the Summer and Fall semester. Standard room reservation procedures will follow after an event has been confirmed through the EACS system. The RBS-Facilities Team will only approve event requests if you show proof that your event has been certified in EACS. To begin the event approval process, please complete the RBS Event Request Form. Once certified, please send a copy to RBS-Facilities@business.rutgers.edu. To reserve a room on either campus, please submit your room request through the Event Management System Portal.

Congratulations, Tom! Congratulations Thomas Moore, Student Counselor, Undergraduate-New Brunswick, on your receiving your Doctorate in Education! This past June, Tom defended his dissertation topic, “Needs of Parents of University Students on the Autism Spectrum”.

Off to College Summer coming to an end also means transitions to a new school year. For many parents, this time is bittersweet. Proud mom, Yasmin Varga, Accounting Specialist, PTL Office, shares a photo of her daughter, Alyssa, who will be attending Montclair State University this September.

Staff Shared Recipes Lemon Spaghetti Shared by Brenda Anderson, Program Coordinator, Dean’s Office Ingredients: • • • • • • •

Heavily salted water for pasta 1 small chopped shallot 2 cloves chopped garlic Small pinch of Red pepper flakes 3/4 cup heavy cream 6-7 tablespoons cold butter 11/4 cup shaved pecorino or Parmesan cheese • Solid handful roughly chopped parsley • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 Lemons Instructions Boil salted water. Very lightly sauté chopped shallots, garlic, red pepper flakes, and two tablespoons extra virgin olive oil. Add heavy cream and zest of one and a half lemons and put on medium heat. Add 6-7 tablespoons cold butter- one at a time, and whisk to emulsify before adding another tablespoon of butter. Turn down to very low heat just to keep warm.

Add pasta to water for about eight minutes to al dente, don’t drain pasta, save the water to thin sauce later. Use tongs to put pasta into saucepan. Add an additional 3/4 cup pasta water.

Slowly add pecorino cheese little by little and stir constantly. Add juice from 1-2 zested lemons, fresh ground black pepper and salt to taste. add handful of chopped parsley and toss. Garnish with lemon zest and more cheese! * shred a roasted chicken, asparagus, or a seafood pairs well with this pasta!

National Peach Month In 1982, President Ronald Regan declared August as National Peach Month. Georgia is known as the Peach State and produces 130 million pounds of the delicious fuzzy fruit each year, but California and South Carolina produce even more annually. Peaches contain soluble fiber which helps stabilize blood sugar and keeps cholesterol in check, and its insoluble fiber aids in digestion.

Be sure to eat the skin, too, to maximize you healthy fiber intake. In addition, August 22nd is Eat a Peach Day and August 24th is National Peach Pie Day so “Reach for a Peach” and enjoy this luscious summertime fruit.

Ice Cream Month July is National Ice Cream Month, and we can’t think of anything that would be more fitting than enjoying this sweet, cold treat on a hot summer day throughout the hottest month of the year.
