Monthly Observances
National Peach Month
In 1982, President Ronald Regan declared August as National Peach Month. Georgia is known as the Peach State and produces 130 million pounds of the delicious fuzzy fruit each year, but California and South Carolina produce even more annually. Peaches contain soluble fiber which helps stabilize blood sugar and keeps cholesterol in check, and its insoluble fiber aids in digestion. Be sure to eat the skin, too, to maximize you healthy fiber intake. In addition, August 22nd is Eat a Peach Day and August 24th is National Peach Pie Day so “Reach for a Peach” and enjoy this luscious summertime fruit.

In his proclamation, he said, “[Ice cream is] the perfect dessert and snack food… nearly ten percent of all the milk produced by the United States dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream…” Considering that the average American consumes over 20 pounds of ice cream annually, the production of ice cream has probably grown quite a bit since the 1980s.
