Aries 3/21 - 4/19 Spring will be here at the same time as graduation, unless you live in Moscow. Sorry about your bad luck.

Taurus 4/20 – 5/20 The honeymoon stage of your latest fling has ended. Watch our for lowflying shoes — they’re aimed at your head. Gemini 5/21 - 6/21 You will make a great scientific discovery this week. And once you’re done taking a swim in Paradise Creek, remember to shower — your discovery is likely to follow you home.

Cancer 6/22 - 7/22 Take inspiration from the weather. Write a book titled “Snow and Worms.” Everyone loves to laugh at something terrible. Leo 7/23 - 8/22 Embrace your 15 minutes of fame. The statue you spent an hour talking to the other night will gladly let you have the limelight of YouTube. Virgo 8/23 - 9/22 Everything happens for a reason. Keep this in mind as you recover from what you’re about to do Saturday night. Poor choices come with lessons for you and funny photos for everyone else. Libra 9/23 - 10/22 The dream you’re having about getting run over by the megaloads while your alarm blares in the background is not a dream. Put it in gear, bud.

What ridiculous things have you

Scorpio 10/23 - 11/21 Life will be nice to you this week. You deserve it after surviving that freak encounter with a bull a few days ago. Remember, running in a red T-shirt is bad when the chaser has horns. Sagittarius 11/22 - 12/21 Girl Scout cookies are back, so are the Girl Scouts. Put your money in your front pockets. Capricorn 12/22 – 1/19 Chin up, buttercup. Your mom won’t break her back if you step on a crack, but you might crack your head if you walk into one more pole while texting. Aquarius 1/20 – 2/18 It might seem like no one is listening, but keep talking. Eventually someone will cave and tell you to stop. Pisces 2/19 - 3/20 Just because something is candycolored, doesn’t mean it’s completely edible. Be cautious.

“I was in my apartment parking lot, which is a horrible parking lot that is always full of drunk people parking badly. Someone had placed a cinder block and an old computer monitor in a pseudo-spot outside their apartment to keep people from blocking the exit to the parking lot, and I saw a guy freaking out because he tried to park there and ran over the cinder block. His friend was trying to comfort him, and said, ‘Dude, it’s a Honda Civic. It can handle ANYTHING.’” — chava thomas

Sole comfort

High heels have been shown to cause foot, ankle and Achilles tendon problems. Running shoes, by contrast, extend their activity and health friendly design to everyday use.

joanna wilson rawr Look down at your feet. Among the varieties of heels, trainers and Converse, it can be difficult to tell which shoes will be a detriment to your body’s performance. Alan Nasypany, the director of the University of Idaho athletic training program, said shoes can have a huge effect on you body’s ability to cope with daily activities. “Each person has an individual preference for what their body has for how their joints and their feet are supposed to function,” Nasypany said. “So, the shoes are artificial and created by people who don’t have the feet you have. So when you buy a pair of shoes, some people can fit into the average shoe, but most people struggle a little bit.” Nasypany said new shoes shouldn’t hurt.

“There’s a myth about shoes, that they take a while to break in,” Nasypany said. “When you try a shoe on in the store, it should feel really good as soon as you put it on. You know you have a good pair of shoes when you don’t want to take them off.” Most shoes are made for people who turn their feet in, or pronation, he said. “If you have a foot that doesn’t pronate, it’s really difficult to find shoes for you,” Nasypany said. “They would buy those shoes, and it would make their feet and their body worse. Could be their feet or knees or back. Any of those parts.” Nasypany said he has had patients who even suffer from headaches as a result of the shoes they are wearing. “If you fall in on your arches, or roll out on your arches, it changes the way the bones work all the way up to your spine,” Nasypany said.

Building shoes Shoes were first made from a wooden form said Sandra Evenson, director and professor of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. “A ‘last’ is created,” Evenson said. “Cobblers would take measurements of your feet — of each foot — and based on those measurements, they would carve a wood form.” The shoe would then be built around the form. Evenson said shoes didn’t have a division of left or right until around the 1700 or 1800s. “Usually every company has their own standards last, from which they develop all the other sizes,” Evenson said, “and they build the styles around what they think their customer’s foot is shaped like.” Inexpensive shoes, such as those sold by Payless ShoeSource, are meant to be trendy, and discarded as the trends change, so less focus is devoted

to comfort, she said. Running shoes are on the opposite end of the spectrum. “That’s where a lot has been done in terms of materials,” Evenson said. “A lot of exiting things are being done in terms of materials. The … cutting edge stuff is happening (in) performance sportswear.”

High heels A recent trend Evenson has observed is the extremely high heels. “A lot of those shoes are inexpensive shoes, and there’s not a lot of support built into them,” Evenson said. “A lot of a high heel has to do with where the heel is placed in relation to the rest of the foot.” Evenson said heels that are placed inward on the shoe can carry more weight, but heels that are more outward toward the edge of the shoe can be more stable. Heels that are set up on a

jesse hart | rawr

platform are also better for the feet, Evenson said. “And so it might actually be that if you took the whole platform off, you’d only have a two or three inch heel,” Evenson said. “Adding a platform is one way to get the height without the difficulty.” Wider heels provide the ankle with more stability, she said. Evenson said stores are beginning to carry inserts for heels that work to support the toes much like a ballerina’s toe shoes. “You can get these little silicon or rubber pockets,” Evenson said. “I’ve actually seen those at Shopko for regular people for their shoes. You end up crunching your toes — if there was a way your toes could stay really straight, you would be better off.” Brad Capawana, a doctor of podiatric medicine, said one change that can happen from

pullman-moscow craigslist > for sale / wanted Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee.

Click cautiously - $$$ (moscow) Date: 2012-04-06, 6:57PM PDT Reply to: matt maw at arg-arts@uidaho.edu You can find nearly anything from used furniture to used basketball shoes in the vast world of Craigslist, but the website has its dangers. Freshman Amber Eisenbraun bought a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta last semester on Craigslist and sunk $3,500 in repairs less than four months after the purchase. “You can have good experiences on Craigslist, but you can’t expect the world to be full of nice people,” she said. “As much as (we’d want) to, you can’t give everyone the benefit of the doubt.” The vehicle’s advertisement looked legitimate, she said, and the family selling it seemed trustworthy when she arrived to test drive the car. She asked if they’d taken it to a shop and they said yes. She had to email them about the vehicle’s accumulated miles

because they weren’t included in the ad, but she said the only significant “red flag” was the cracked windshield that wasn’t visible in the website photograph. Eisenbraun said she consulted several of her male friends and their fathers about the vehicle during the process and a few of those friends helped her with the test drive of the car. The car drove smoothly at first, but needed extensive repairs a few months later, she said. The mechanic who fixed the Jetta told her the sellers must’ve known about the issues. Eisenbraun said she believes the sellers tested the vehicle but wanted to get rid of it before the mechanical issues occurred. She said thorough research is worthwhile with these kinds of purchases on Craigslist, and the website isn’t a good medium for technology

and mechanical items. The quality of your experience depends on what you buy, she said, but the basic idea of Craigslist is admirable. “I think the purpose of people selling to people is good,” Eisenbraun said. Marguerite Crawford, employee with University of Idaho Tutoring and Academic Assistance Programs and non-traditional student, said she used to help her father sell vehicles on Craigslist. She’s bought and sold cell phones, sold an engine starter from one of her own vehicles and sold another vehicle within a half hour of listing it online. “I’ve never had any bad experiences,” she said. “So far, so good.” Crawford said she doesn’t buy or sell with Craigslist ads without photographs. She would only buy electronics if she could inspect them herself, she

said, and she isn’t sure that vehicles should be purchased on the site. “I could pay you for the car, I get five minutes down the road, the engine blows,” she said. “But then again, you take those chances no matter where you go and buy a car.” Senior Brett Middleton said he’s bought a television and sold a Sony PlayStation 3, among other things on Craigslist. He said his experiences have been generally positive and there’s an atmosphere of trust among collegiate Moscow-area patrons. “I think that we tend to trust each other more in this area because we know we’re all in the same boat, we’re all college students and we’re kind of broke,” Middleton said.

Conventions of (hair) color

hayden crosby | rawr

With three very different stigmas of hair color Jayden Suttlemyre the blond, Marla Francis with the red curls, and Ariel Terry the brunette combine and conquer.

nicole lichtenberg rawr Zach Weigt, a freshman biology major, has only eaten sunscreen once. “I did it once just because I wanted to try it. It didn’t taste that great at first, but the aftertaste was good,” Weigt said. Despite this glaring indicator, Weigt is not a “ginger.” Weigt tans in the summer and has dark eyebrows. “(Real) gingers have no eyebrows,” Weigt said. Whether you’re blonde, brunette or a red-headed and freckled “ginger,” all hair colors come with a string of stereotypes. Just try telling a blonde girl a blonde joke and you’ll see this can be true.

While the incorrect notion of the “ginger” as soulless and subhuman has only recently come into notoriety from shows like “South Park,” discrimination against redheads dates back to the Middle Ages when red hair reportedly signified a hot temper, an out of control libido and a moral compass that pointed due south. In the Malleus Maleficarum, a 13th century guide to identifying witchcraft, red hair meant that someone was most probably a witch, a vampire, or a werewolf. However, it isn’t all bad. Medieval texts by Theophilus Presbyter claim the blood of a red haired young man was a necessary ingredient in the creation of gold from copper.

The other active ingredient — ashes of a basilisk. These strange beliefs persist into the 20th century. Those deemed “ginger” are often subject to teasing, abuse and ostracization. For example, in 2008 a 14-year-old boy started the Facebook group “Kick a ginger,” which was deemed inappropriate and won him a visit from the Canadian Mounted Police. A family in England reported having to move twice due to harassment about their fiery locks. On a more lighthearted note, BBC news reported supermarket chain Tesco was asked to remove a Christmas card reading, “Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones.” Redheads, while they are

the most exclusive, aren’t the only ones getting the short end of the stick. Probably the second-most made fun of hair minority is the blonde population. Blondes are thought to be flighty, unintelligent and overly promiscuous. There is even a genre of humor, the “dumb blonde” joke, dedicated to belittling the intellect of toeheads. The “dumb blonde” originated in the early 1800s as a result of Rosalie Duthe, a companion of French noblemen. Lore says she took inordinately long pauses prior to speaking, creating the belief that she was dumb (as in mute.) The rest is history. Sadie Grossbaum, a freshman and biochemistry major, said stereotypes are there, but

they don’t stick. “My intelligence is questioned, but people get over it. (But) with blonde, 19-year-old college students, it’s a combination of things, not just hair,” Grossbaum said. Both guys and girls are subject to stereotyping, said Grossbaum, but “it’s more subconscious with guys.” Grossbaum said she used to sport a mohawk in a variety of bright colors. “I was bored,” Grossbaum said. “Your hair is the only [part of your body] you can change and then go, ‘never mind.’” Her distinctive haircut got plenty of attention and Grossbaum’s demeanor garnered even more surprise.

Indiana Jones isn’t the only one who can rock a fedora

Voices from the rawr Facebook Fedoras are some of the only hats that seem to look good on me. I love my black sequinned one with a peacock feather, (but) my khaki-colored zebra striped one is even better!

This doesn’t mean shift the position, simply angle it. Britney Spears is another celebrity who knows how to wear a fedora with style. I saw Britney in concert in 2011 for her Femme Fatale tour in Sacramento, California. Every backup dancer on stage, including Britney, was wearing a white fedora. Seeing her and her dancers perform in such unison brought me back to the 90s where Britney became first known for rocking a fedora. One way to incorporate a fedora into your wardrobe would be to wear a neutral-colored fedora with blue

jeans and a crisp white blazer is the perfect day-to-day combination. If you want to switch it up with a colored fedora, try donning black pants and a tuxedo blazer. If you want to go with the classic black fedora, try neutral pants with a colored jacket. If you’re feeling bold, why not wear a white fedora with white pants and a bright blazer? A fedora made out of straw with a colored band wrapped around the hat is perfect for sweet summer look. Take cues from your own unique and personal style. Yes, it’s exciting to buy a new hat, but that doesn’t mean go style-crazy because you’re about to wear it for the first time. isla brazzil rawr The flirty ‘50s have made an appearance in clubs and streets, hidden behind red lips and a curvy class that women have neglected for the past decade. Helping to readjust the public’s focus on womanly figures in contemporary fashion, the knee length dresses and wavy locks are back. Political science major Kassidy Worthwine dressed as a fifties pin-up girl for Halloween last year. “I love that the fifties pin-up girl style is sexy yet still very tailored and tactful. The high waists, the bandeau and balconet tops, the pumps —they all add sex appeal without being provocative and tacky,” Worthwine said. Fifties trends are becoming fashion forward in today’s generation as the 2000s have turned into a fashion time machine that is revamping and modernizing the styles of the past. Pin-up girls have traded spaces from a night of playful dress up to a way of transforming a woman’s look. “I love the fifties-girl style because

flirty and the ‘50s

it’s all about glamour and being a classic beauty, and the look works in our generation because individualism is important. Starting trends is cooler to do,” Education major Katie Warmbier said. According to History.Com, because of the war in the 1940s, there was a general moving away from frivolous dressing. It said that the government asked designers not to be wasteful, including using unnecessary amounts of fabric, materials and trimming. This is what created the knee length style that is making an appearance today. Replacing the mini skirt with the knee length skirt has become a classic and classy way for a woman to feel like a real lady. “I was inspired to dress up in the 50s pin-up style because I love that time period and what it represents for women,” Worthwine said. Worthwine is inspired by the way women from the ‘50s took pride in exhibiting power and sass through their clothing choices. “They were always put together and composed, yet expressed dominance through their sex appeal—some-

thing that men tend to lack,” Worthwine said. Fifties pin-up hairstyles were soft and curly. Straight hair was out of style yet short and wavy hair was in style. Young women often tied their hair back in a ponytail and circled it with a pretty scarf. “Waving my hair and pulling it back into an up-do works perfectly with a deep red lipstick. I think the attitude is just as important as pulling the look off,” Warmbier said. Similar to popular television shows like “Mad Men” or movies like “Some Like It Hot,” having a coy and mysterious attitude can enhance effect of the style greatly. “I also am a curvy girl so this style compliments my body really well,” Warmbier said. Desire and fantasy are associated with the idea of the pin-up as fashion icons and movie stars during the 1950s were idolized if they were able to pull off this look with ease. “The look works in our generation because women, while increasing in the work field, can exert power

through sex appeal and embrace their femininity while still remaining tactful and classy,” Worthwine said. Chanel, like Northface and Obey, is a known brand among Idaho’s student body. It has existed since the ‘50s when it produced boxy classic Chanel jackets and slim skirts in braid trimmed and textured tweeds. The full skirt persisted in the 1950s, lines were accentuated, and waistlines were high, according to History.Com. “It’s a look that is a breath of fresh air for people. There is still something so feminine about being composed and put-together and while it’s no longer expected, it’s still some worth embracing,” Worthwine said. Clothes are apart of being realistic as students don’t often change their personal style with every trend. Clothing choices in this generation are continually mixing today’s world and the old one. With top brands like Chanel that have style that exist to this day, the 2000 era can expect more from the pin-up era to come. Isla Brazzil can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

Nasypany said extra stress on the feet would slowly strengthen the bones. “If you do it too quickly, your bones will change and start to fail, and that’s where we see stress fractures,” Nasypany said. “If you’re used to having lots of support, and then you don’t have lots of support, those muscles will have to work a lot harder and they’ll get mad at you and you’ll have muscle strains.” Shin splints can come from either too much cushion, or too little. “You can either get it because you hit the ground really hard and it bumps, and sends a lot of vibration and stress to the bones,” Nasypany said. “Or they can be caused because your foot’s unstable and makes the muscles work harder and it irritates where the muscle is attached to the bone.” Capawana said most foot problems become more severe slowly during time. “It’s like listening to loud music,” Capawana said. “If you do it once or twice, it’s not going to ruin your ears. But if you do any of these things repetitively, over time, the wear and tear starts to show.” Capawana said a basic athletic shoe is the best choice for students who spend a lot of time walking. “Athletic shoes are meant for pounding and they’re designed (to handle many) miles,” Capawana said. Nasypany said he’s often asked if two shoes, or minimally supported shoes, are good for the feet. “Most of the time we’d say they’re probably not very good, because we’ve gone our whole lives wearing shoes,” Nasypany said. “So most of us have grown accustomed to the support. So if we take that support away, then the feet take a long time to adapt to that.” The unsupported shoe would be good for someone with good foot mechanics. “But most people – we used to do screenings for athletes before the season, and we would find less than 20 percent would have what we would classify as normal feet,” Nasypany said. “And so none of those 80 percent of people would really set

up to do well barefoot or with minimally supported shoes.” He said it depends on what the feet are accustomed to and it’s a fad. Flip-flops generally have minimal support as well. Nasypany said students should start by wearing them for only a few hours at a time if they’ve worn shoes with more support all winter.
