Aries 3/21-4/19

4.15.16

Claire Whitley | Rawr

With Mom in town, it must feel like Christmas. All the free food and new Vandal gear, but Aries, maybe buy your mom dinner one day, huh? Spread the love, or whatever.

Taurus 4/20-5/20 Taurus was looking forward to Moms’ Weekend, but had to go out into the wilderness because of work. No Mom time for them.

Gemini 5/21-6/21

This weekend is supposed to be about mothers, not children. Take Mom out to see the sights of Moscow, or visit downtown for the live music this weekend.

Cancer 6/22-7/22

If above the legal drinking age, share a pitcher with Mom at the Alehouse or take her down to visit some of the new breweries with local beers on tap.

Leo 7/23-8/22 Leo, you have a betting problem, or a donating to charity problem. Watch your wallet at the Turtle Derby this weekend, and try not to go over budget. Again.

Virgo 8/23-9/22

Virgos’ moms tend to be very laid back, especially with their third child’s college years and the umpteenth Moms’ Weekend visit. These days, spending time chilling with Mom is like hanging out with an old friend. She just gets you.

Libra 9/23-10/22 It’s OK to be grumpy because of the crowds, Libra, but all the time? Seriously, take a chill pill and stop yelling at the mothers trying to cross Sixth Street.

Scorpio 10/23-11/21 Scorpio, Mom is not as young as she used to be. Hiking around Moscow Mountain, or repelling down a cliff face likely aren’t her ideas of fun anymore. Dial back the hardcore mode, broski.

Sagittarius 11/22-12/21

Sometimes all a mother needs is to walk through the arboretum with their child. And sometimes children need to just let

their mothers tell them what they want to do.

Capricorn 12/22-1/19

Friday may be cloudy and grey, but at least Saturday and Sunday will be full of sunshine and smiles. So seriously, get off Netflix. Mom has already seen that episode because you showed her last time she was in Moscow.

Aquarius 1/20-2/18

The realization that you are just like your mother left you winded early this week. But don’t worry Aquarius, that will just give you more to talk about this weekend.

Pisces 2/19-3/20 The stars were vague about your fortune, Pisces. Something about your mother coming to visit this weekend? Or maybe you’ll win the lottery and not have to take that one class you aren’t looking forward to? We don’t know.

Philosophical kid’s movies Many movies are made for children, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed by older audiences. There are films out there that are “kid’s movies,” but have deep messages meant for those ages seven through 70. Here are a list of films that contain deeper elements beyond the typical fart jokes.

“Kung Fu Panda” (2008)

“Lilo and Stitch”(2002) Family is an often chosen topic of modern children’s filmmaking, which makes it even more remarkable that “Lilo and Stitch” manages to stand out from other movies that tackle similar issues. Both main characters, Lilo (Daveigh Chase) and Stitch (Chris Sanders) are total outcasts with almost no one who cares for them in their lives. Totally alone and with nothing, both characters meet and together gain everything. That is the true meaning of family, not who shares blood with you, but who shares a bond with you. Philosophical quote: Ohana means family, family means nobody gets left behind.

“Toy Story” (1995) “Toy Story,” sees Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks), the most loved toy of a young boy named Andy be challenged by Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) who suddenly over takes Woody as Andy’s new favorite toy. Tensions between the two rise, and they engage in a fight that only serves to get them both captured by evil neighborhood kid, Sid (Erik Von Detten). Only after they work together to escape Sid, do they realize they have a lot in common, and thus starts a friendship that went on to spawn multiple sequels. Philosophical quote: You got a friend in me. Sam Balas can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

A Crumbs recipe Chinese steamed fish fillets Steaming is one of the best ways to bring out the juicy, tender and fresh flavor of fish. This recipe can help you make a simple, tasty and healthy dish from the ocean.

Ingredients n 1 pound fish fillets (cod, tilapia, swai, or any fresh fillet you can get from local grocery stores) n 2 to 3 fresh green onions n Fresh ginger, about 2 to 3 tablespoons when chopped into slices n Fresh lemon, 1 to 3 pieces n 2 to 3 tablespoons Lee Kum Kee seasoned soy sauce for seafood (or any other brand of

soy sauce) n 2 to 3 tablespoons Shaoxing cooking wine (or white wine) n 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt n 1/4 to 3/4 teaspoon black pepper n 2 to 3 tablespoons vegetable oil n 1 to 2 teaspoons marinated chili pepper or any other spicy add-on stuff n 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Directions 1. Put fillets into the dish, add cooking wine on the fillets, and use your hands to make it better absorbed by the fillets 2. Marinate the fillets with salt and black pepper and also use your hand to evenly cover the fillets with salt and black pepper 3. Chop fresh ginger into slices, and put them on the marinated fillets 4. Marinate for about 20 minutes 5. Add water into the pan or wok, set the

steam rack, put the dish with fillets on the rack, and set the pan or wok on the burner. The water level should not be higher than the height of rack 6. Use max power to heat the pan or wok. When water is boiled, cover the lid to steam. Keep max power for 7 to 10 minutes 7. Turn off the heat, and use the remaining heat to keep steaming for 2 to 3 minutes 8. Take the lid off and carefully pick up the dish

with gloves because it can be very hot 9. Chop green onions and put them on the fillets. 10. Evenly add soy sauce, lemon juice, also sugar and chili pepper for optional 11. Heat a small pan with oil. When the oil is hot, evenly pour the oil on the dish so make the green onions a little bit cooked 12. Serve warm. Do not waste the juice from fillets, because it can be a great condiment to eat with steamed rice Jinrong Lei can be reached at crumbs@uidaho.edu

Working to love, loving to work UI Theatre Department prepares to perform Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” Nina Rydalch Rawr While the University of Idaho’s Theatre Department often performs adaptations of Shakespeare’s work, their upcoming performance is a play both about and made with love. At its heart, “As You Like It” is about loving, and loving well, said Vinecia Coleman, who adapted and directed the play. “If you don’t learn to love excellently it could lead to you losing love altogether. Rosalind is the perfect example of that, she’s the protagonist, she plays a lot of games until she realizes that,” Coleman said. “Life is very real, and at any point anything could happen. A lion could come and kill the love of her life, or in our case, you could lose someone.” In the play, Coleman said the protagonist learns the true value of allowing yourself to love someone. “You could lose that love at any point, you genuinely can, so it behooves us to love as well as we can right now,” Coleman said. “Because you don’t know how long that love will be there, I would say that’s the essence of the play.” The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 21-23, 28-30, and at 2 p.m. April 24 and May 1 in the Hartung Theater. Admission is free for UI students, $15 for general public, $10 for UI faculty, staff and seniors 55 and up and $5 for children 12 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at BookPeople of Moscow or at the door an hour before curtain. Coleman, a second year M.F.A. student in dramatic writing, said that in her adaptation she tried to focus more on the seriousness of the characters’ situations. In Coleman’s adaptation, characters are combined, she said. One character, the character of the Moon, is a combination of two characters and an entirely new creation. Lo Miles, who graduated from UI last fall and who will play the character

Coleman said she has also adapted the play to be more applicable to today’s world and reflect the time and place. “Shakespeare still can speak to us, so using his words and a few of my own, I wanted to speak to people today, hopefully, about love, and how important it is, and how if we don’t take care of it we could lose it,” Coleman said. Chronicles of a mother Kevin Douglas Neighbors Rawr “Welcome to the world, Alex. Shh … shh … shh … don’t cry. You’re safe here. With me.” Under the fluorescent lights of the hospital room, she held the baby to her chest. “You’re confused, overwhelmed, I understand. I will always be with you. My baby.” Under the dimmed light of the nursery, she kissed her baby on the forehead. “Shh … shh … shh … sleep … sleep. Goodnight my sweet, goodnight, sleep tight my sweet, sleep tight.” Under a mural of the morning sky painted on the ceiling of Alex’s childhood bedroom, she woke her baby up. “Alex, hey baby, wake up.” Her voice was gentle. “Is it today, mom?” Alex asked, eyes still caked with sleep. “Good morning baby. Yes it is. Out of bed. Breakfast is ready, I laid out your clothes. Up and at it. I’ll meet you downstairs. I love you,” She added as she left the room. “Love you too mommy!” As Alex headed out the door, she went through the checklist — “Got your backpack?” Yes, Alex replied. “Water bottle?” Check, Alex said. “Cell phone?” Mmhmm, Alex nodded. “Jacket?” Yes, yes, yes. “I’m gonna learn so much mommy, ‘multiplications,’ plus and minuses, reading, writing, science, animals, I can’t wait to meet all my new best “Can you come with me?” Alex’s voice was friends.” fraught with worry. “Yes you will, one day at time sweetie. “No, but I’ll be right here at three You are going to be my little genius.
