4.8.16

Corrin Bond | Rawr

This week might not feel eventful, but enjoy the peace and quiet while you can. Easter and April Fool’s might be over, but UIdaho Bound round two and Moms’ Weekend are right around the corner.

Taurus 4/20-5/20 The little guppy you picked up from the pet store is going to grow big and strong this week. Be wary of buying any friends for it. This goldfish will not play well with others.

Gemini 5/21-6/21

Feeling down this week? It’s because you need new music in your life. Explore Spotify or 8tracks this weekend and don’t be afraid to get out of your music comfort zone this weekend.

Cancer 6/22-7/22

Spring is around the corner. Put some life into your place and buy a plant or two. It’ll make you feel more vibrant and pretty-up your dorm or apartment.

Leo 7/23-8/22 Avocados are key for you this week, Leo.

They might not be your favorite food, but they’ll keep you healthy and ready to face the day.

Virgo 8/23-9/22

It’s better to face your fears than avoid a problem. Do that thing you’ve been putting off all week. You’ll feel way better.

Libra 9/23-10/22

This is an exciting week for you, Libra. You’ve finally figured out where you’ll be living in the fall. Now, all you need is a house-warming plant for your new place.

Scorpio 10/23-11/21 There is a lot of studying to do, but don’t spend all of spring stuck in the library. Take a book outside and bask in the sunshine.

Sagittarius 11/22-12/21

Did you have that dream about the lions again last night? Don’t worry, it’s definitely a good sign.

Capricorn 12/22-1/19 Take a day off this week. The world will survive if you sleep in an extra hour or miss a class.

Aquarius 1/20-2/18

Having a tough week? Dig out your old high school yearbook or explore past years on Facebook. Old photos are always good for a laugh.

Pisces 2/19-3/20 The treadmill and cycling machines at the Rec are always good choices, but try some alternative exercises this week. You might find an unexpected passion for hiking, rock climbing or swimming.

Wanderlust tunes The sun is finally out and the days are lasting longer. It is time to take those good weather vibes and go out and wander. These songs are for the roadtrippers, explorers and travelers looking for a playlist that matches the feeling of springtime wanderlust.

Mumford and Sons is one of the best bands at evoking a sense of wanderlust, especially through this track from the band’s second album, “Babel.” With the very recognizable sounds of folk.

“Big Jet Plane” by Angus and Julia Stone

This song, by an Australian brother “Ends of the Earth” by and sister duo, mixes indie and pop Lord Huron music in the most charming way. High pitched electric piano

keys and a tambourine compose the intro of this quirky song. This track brings out a beachy, indie vibe reminiscent of songs from the ’60s.

“California” by Delta Spirit This California based indie rock band layers each individual voice in the band incredibly. With a fast rhythm and quick, pulsing beat this track builds up and explodes during the chorus. This is the kind of song that, once heard, would make anyone hit the repeat button until it is worn out.

“Young Blood” by The Naked and Famous The Naked and Famous have been creating anthem-like tracks since the band formed in 2007, and this song is no exception. Both the female and male vocals of the song contrast in a way that elevates the music to perfection.

With sounds from indie, folk, punk and electronic music, this song unfolds and develops every step of the way. This track should be on everyone’s exploring playlist.

“Hotel Anywhere” by Cold War Kids This song opens up strong and keeps the powerful tempo going throughout. Both the electric guitar and drums make up a large part of the rhythm for this song, creating a very recognizable indie rock vibe from the Cold War Kids. Belle Baggs, Melanie Meenan work to create relevant dance program for students

Kevin Douglas Neighbors Rawr The first year Belle Baggs began teaching at the University of Idaho, she quickly found herself with more responsibilities than expected. Baggs, who was hired in 2011, said shortly after starting her first faculty job, the head of UI’s dance program, Greg Halloran, fell ill. “When I first came on, we found out really quickly that Greg was really sick, so the second semester I was here alone, my first faculty job,” Baggs said. “The next semester I was here he passed away. A connection with Cuba UI sophomore Taylor Falk experiences Cuba through a remote internship Corrin Bond Rawr When Taylor Falk sat down to write an essay to win an internship with the Cuba Journal, she said she felt like everything fell into place. The essay, which would determine the winner of an internship created through the partnership between the Miami-based Cuba Journal and the University of Idaho, asked students to write about Ernest Hemingway’s time in Cuba. The UI sophomore, who is studying Spanish and marketing, didn’t know much about Hemingway, but she said her involvement in the university’s annual Hemingway Festival helped her better understand the author’s relationship with the country. “Not coming from an English background, I’m not very familiar with Hemingway, but working with the Hemingway Festival, I became a lot more familiar,” Falk said. “Writing the essay, I knew the direction I wanted to go in and it wrote itself a little bit.” Falk’s involvement with the Hemingway Festival and the Cuba Journal began with a business writing class she took from Jennifer Hawk, a UI English department lecturer. “I asked for volunteers for an internship and she raised her hand,” Hawk said. “It was non-paid and Taylor said, ‘I want to do this, I want this experience.’” Although Falk is a full time student and athlete, Hawk said she made time to help out with the festival as a non-paid intern. When Hawk found out Falk had not only applied for the Cuba Journal internship, but that she had also won, the professor said she was excited. “I was thrilled for her,” Hawk said. “She’s such a great person and she did such a good job for me, I knew she would do well for them.” Simons Chase, Cuba Journal editor-in-chief, said the publication, which began one year ago, is a combination of a newspaper and a magazine. “It has the utility of a newspaper with the looks and depth of a magazine,” Chase said. “It seems to be a good fit for the audience and it’s been an incredible year.” Chase said he first decided to pair with UI because of the Hemingway Festival’s exploration of the author’s relationship with various places, including Cuba. “The Hemingway Festival was incredible because Hemingway’s connection to Idaho and the people involved were amazing,” Chase said. “I did the internship award and that’s been a really great way to get some help.” Now, as a remote intern for the Cuba Journal, she

The rain on April first Jinrong Lei Rawr That night, we were drunk. At least I was drunk. We drank up all the alcohol bottles he could find in his hotel room the night before his suicide. He called me around 10 p.m. on the last day of March. His room in central Hong Kong was on the 24th floor. When I pressed down the wall bell, the room’s double doors opened immediately. His peaked chin was full of short and newborn mustache. He threw me a pale smile. I was a little surprised. I had not seen his smile for a couple of days. He was diagnosed with depression few years ago. He kept seeing a psychologist these years, and he was cooperative. However, his emotional condition was a cunning and intractable one, which might use up all his patience. I stepped slowly into the capacious and neat seaview living room. Through the white French windows, Shenzhen Bay displayed its beauty with the decorations of the dark sea and the bright artificial lights from the city. The sea reflected the neon lights which looked like many colorful ribbons on the water. “Champagne or beer?” he asked as he leaned on the back of the black leather couch. “Whatever,” I replied. He brought a bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee. It was a birthday gift from his boyfriend. This champagne blended more than 120 different wines. He called it the “taste of love” because love is something so complicated that no one can coin a specific name for it. “I remembered you said you will drink your ‘taste of love’ with him.” I took a glass of Krug from his hand. “We broke up,” he said and sipped a little Krug with closed eyes. “Again?” I raised my eyebrows. He opened his eyes and stared at the bubbles in the glass. “Do you want some ice?” I shook my head silently. He carried a metal ice bucket from the kitchen and placed it on the black wooden coffee table. “Have you watched the ‘Inner Senses’?” “Inner Senses” is his last movie which released in March 2002. It is a typical Hong Kong ghost movie, and he was the main actor. After his suicide, the media guessed that his depression may have relation to this film, but it’s not true. Some people claimed that if the protagonist jumped from the top floor at the end of the movie, he would not kill himself in the real life. Perhaps they were correct. I don’t know. What I know is, this is not a joke. Perhaps, he did not want to upset the people who loved him very much, so he made his suicide as an April Fool’s Day joke. He added several ice cubes into his glass with a metal ice clip and sat on a black leather piano chair in
