CEO'S REVIEW
In 2019, the Port of Rauma handled 5.83 million tonnes of cargo and 261,000 container units (TEU). Total traffic was at the same level as in 2018, and the decline in container traffic was less than 1%. Of total port traffic, exports accounted for 4.06 million tonnes (-2.1%), imports for 1.7 million tonnes (+5.8%) and domestic traffic for 0.08 million tonnes. The number of ship calls was 1,087, which was 71 less than in 2018.
The company implemented an operational efficiency programme, which resulted in a reduction in the number of managers, a reorganisation of duties, and the transfer of port and vessel services to a new subsidiary (Botnia Port Service Ltd) in June 2019.
The expansion of the port fields at Ulko-Petäjäs continued with phase 2 and phase 3 dredging and backfilling works. The project proceeded according to plan and commissioning took place in October 2019. The dredging and backfilling works of phase 4 also commenced at Petäjäs in October. The cost estimate for the project is 18.5 million euros. The project is planned for completion in 2021.
The company’s turnover was 11.9 million euros, its operating margin was 5.8 million euros, and its profit was 1.7 million euros. Profit amounted to 0.1 million euros after appropriations and taxes.

The prospects for port traffic in 2020 are exceptionally difficult to assess. The industrial action in the forest industry in early 2020 led to a significant drop in cargo volumes as early as in February 2020, and the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in China, is likely to cause a large drop in export industry production and thus reduce our cargo volumes and overall profit. We estimate that traffic volumes and the results of the Port of Rauma in 2020 will be clearly lower than in 2019.
