CEO'S REVIEW

2020 will not be a year easily forgotten. The COVID-19 epidemic battered the industry and port traffic throughout Finland. Unfortunately, Rauma was no exception. Exports of paper, pulp and sawn goods fell by almost 700,000 tons, and with forest industry imports dropping by almost 300,000 tons, the total decrease was nearly a million tons. Total port traffic amounted to five million tons, showing a decrease of 13.8 per cent from the previous year. In 2020, the port of Rauma handled 219,000 container units (TEU), a decrease of 16.4 per cent.

The company’s turnover was 11.4 million euros, with a profit of 1.9 million euros. The decline in the company’s turnover compared to 2019 was mainly due to a strong decline in the export of forest industry products and the import of raw materials. The increase in interest expenses resulted in a loss of -0.2 million euros. 2020 was the second year of operation for the Port of Rauma subsidiary, Botnia Port Service Ltd. The decrease in ship calls had a negative impact on the company's turnover, and despite enhanced efficiency and a group contribution, the company incurred losses of approximately 15,000 euros.

With the vaccine roll-out, the COVID-19 epidemic is likely to be contained during 2021. This is likely to boost the economy and also increase production, exports and thus the port's traffic volumes. Positive changes may even happen rather quickly.

ENVIRONMENT

In 2007, the port operations were granted an environmental permit that is valid indefinitely and guides the actions of Port of Rauma Ltd, its leaseholders and the businesses operating in the port area. The process of reviewing the conditions of the environmental permit began in 2014 and took effect from the end of 2018.

The Port of Rauma participates in water and fish monitoring off the coast of Rauma using methods approved by the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. In addition, the impact of the Petäjäs expansion project on waters will be monitored in accordance with a separate monitoring programme.

The process of replacing the lighting in the quay and field areas with LED lights continued. In addition, the control functions of the lighting system were developed, taking into account the use of the port's quays, and the emission requirements for winter maintenance contractors’ equipment were tightened.
