Taos, New Mexico, has a rich and complex history that spans thousands of years. Long before European contact, the area was inhabited by Native American peoples, most notably the Taos Pueblo, one of North America’s oldest continuously inhabited communities. The multi-storied adobe dwellings of the Pueblo, estimated to be over 1,000 years old, are still occupied today and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 1540, Spanish conquistadors led by Hernando de Alvarado, a member of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s expedition, arrived in the Taos Valley. Spanish colonization began in earnest in the early 1600s, bringing missions and settlers, often leading to conflict with the Puebloan people. The Pueblo Revolt of 1680, a successful uprising by indigenous groups against Spanish rule, saw the Taos Pueblo play a significant role in expelling Spanish settlers for over a decade.
The Spanish returned in the 1690s, and Taos became part of the colonial province of New Spain, then Mexico after 1821, and finally the United States in 1848 following the Mexican-American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
During the 19th century, Taos became a key stop on the Santa Fe Trail and a cultural crossroads of Spanish, Native American, and Anglo-American influences. In 1847, the Taos Revolt—an uprising of Hispano and Puebloan residents— resulted in the death of American officials, including the first territorial governor, Charles Bent.
In the early 20th century, Taos emerged as an artistic haven. The Taos Art Colony was established by artists like Joseph Henry Sharp and Ernest Blumenschein, who were drawn to the region’s natural beauty and unique cultural mix. This helped shape Taos into a center for the arts that it remains today.
Today, Taos is known for its blend of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures, its historical sites, art galleries, and stunning landscapes at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
