Questo dossier è tante cose insieme. È un racconto, ma allo stesso tempo uno strumento di lavoro, di comunicazione, di lettura e comprensione che abbiamo costruito nel corso dell’anno in cui ci siamo occupati di rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me), un progetto di Emilio Vavarella curato e prodotto da Ramdom e realizzato grazie al sostegno dell’Italian Council (6. Edizione, 2019), programma di promozione di arte contemporanea italiana nel mondo della Direzione Generale Contemporanea del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali per il Turismo.

II titolo del progetto fa riferimento alla prima riga di testo risultante dalla genotipizzazione del DNA dell’artista. Il lavoro consiste in una traduzione, attraverso processi analogici e digitali, del codice genetico in tessuto, usando una delle prime macchine computazionali moderne: il telaio Jacquard. Il risultato è un’opera monumentale che dal 2020 entra a far parte della collezione permanente del MAMbo — Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna. Un processo performativo e di ricerca che, a partire dalla genotipizzazione del DNA dell’artista, realizzata presso un laboratorio di Mountain View (California), vede Vavarella e sua madre, sarta e ricamatrice, lavorare all’interno di un laboratorio tessile del sud Italia (Tessitura Giaquinto).

This pamphlet becomes many things at once.

It is both a narrative and a tool that enabled the work, communication, reading and understanding cultivated over the course of the year we spent with Emilio Vavarella’s rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me).

The project was curated and produced by Random, and made possible thanks to the support of the Italian Council (6th Edition, 2019), program to promote Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.

The title of the project is a reference to the first line of text derived from the genotyping of the artist’s DNA. The work is a translation, through mechanical and digital processes, of a genetic code into a textile, by means of one of the first modern computational machines: the Jacquard loom. The result of this process is a monumental work, a 2020 addition to the MAMbo — Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna permanent collection. A performative process and a research that, beginning with the genotyping of the artist’s DNA executed in a lab in Mountain View (California), brought Vavarella and his mother, a seamstress and embroiderer, to work in a textile workshop in the South of Italy (Tessitura Giaquinto).

Il dossier racconta il progetto nelle varie fasi – programma pubblico, mostre, workshop – così come era stato pensato e così come si è trasformato nel tempo a causa della situazione contingente dovuta alla pandemia globale COVID-19. Le azioni di diffusione internazionale, previste in collaborazione con i partner – The Film Study Center di Harvard (Cambridge, USA) e Arthub Asia (Shanghai, Cina) – sono state in alcuni casi assorbite dalla pubblicazione finale (Mousse Publishing) e in altri semplicemente rimandate nel tempo.

Ad ogni fase di progetto corrisponde un elemento grafico ed un colore differente che fanno riferimento agli oggetti della ricerca (DNA, Jacquard, schede perforate) e alla palette dei colori base del DNA: rosso, giallo, verde, blu, più nero.

La grafica è quindi un elemento integrante del progetto che tesse il dialogo esistente tra tutte le discipline che lo compongono – arte, filosofia, biologia, informatica, economia, artigianato – aiutandone ulteriormente la lettura.

The pamphlet tells the story of the project through its many phases (including public program, exhibitions, and workshops) both as it was originally conceived and as it transformed in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The acts of international exchange, planned in collaboration with partners — including the Film Study Center at Harvard University (Cambridge, USA) and Arthub Asia (Shanghai, China) — will either be incorporated into the final publication (Mousse Publishing), or simply postponed to a different time.

Each phase of the project corresponds to a graphic element and color that refer both to the research objects involved in the process (DNA, Jacquard, punch cards) and to the palette of the basic colors of DNA: red, yellow, green, blue, and black.

The design is here an integral part of the project, weaving the existing dialogue between all the disciplinary threads that compose it — art, philosophy, biology, computer science, economics, craft — thus further helping with its interpretation.

L’opera consiste di tre elementi che compongono una grande installazione: un telaio, un tessuto, un video.

Il telaio utilizza una macchina Jacquard del 19mo secolo: è considerato l’antenato del calcolatore ed è una delle più importanti invenzioni nel campo della tecnologia moderna.

Il tessuto, largo 60 centimetri e lungo 75 metri, è la copia in intreccio Jacquard del codice genetico dell’artista ed è realizzato dalla madre.

Il video documenta la creazione del tessuto.

The artwork consists of three elements composing a large installation: a loom, a fabric, a video.

The loom works with a 19th century Jacquard machine: this is considered to be the ancestor of the computer and it is one of the most important inventions in the history of modern technology.

The fabric, 60 centimetres wide and 75 metres long, renders the artist’s genetic code and is weaved by his mother.

The video documents the creation of the fabric.

George M. Church, PhD ’84, è professore di genetica alla Harvard Medical School, membro fondatore del Wyss Institute e direttore di PersonalGenomes.org, l’unica piattaforma al mondo a concedere libero accesso ai dati sui genomi, sugli ambienti e sui tratti umani. Church è noto per essere stato pioniere negli ambiti della genomica personale e della biologia sintetica. Da allora ha sviluppato i primi metodi di estrazione della prima sequenza del genoma e a lui dobbiamo la drastica riduzione dei costi ottenuta da allora (da 3 a 600 miliardi di dollari), che ha contribuito alla formazione di quasi tutte le aziende e i metodi di “sequenziamento di prossima generazione”. Church, PhD ’84, is professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, a founding member of the Wyss Institute, and director of PersonalGenomes.org, the world’s only open-access information on human genomic, environmental, and trait data. Church is known for pioneering the fields of personal genomics and synthetic biology. He developed the first methods for the extraction of the first genome sequence & to him we owe the dramatic cost reductions achieved since then (down from $3 billion to $600), which contributed to nearly all “next generation sequencing” methods and companies. His team invented CRISPR for human stem cell genome editing and other synthetic biology technologies and applications — including new ways of creating organs for transplantation, gene therapies for aging reversal, and gene drives to eliminate Lyme Disease and Malaria. Church is director of IARPA & NIH BRAIN Projects and National Institutes of Health Center for Excellence in Genomic Science. He has co-authored more than 515 papers and 130 patent publications, and one book, “Regenesis”. The world presented by biomedia is one in which the age-old question of “life itselfâ€? is posed in a new way, presented through a set of artifacts, techniques, and social contexts that are unique to a particular historical moment. Nel nostro Progetto PENELOPE* , sosteniamo che, in tempi arcaici (in Grecia e in alcune parti d’Italia), la logica e la tecnologia della tessitura su telai pesati a ordito fosse in grado di rappresentare un paradigma pre-scientifico di conoscenza ottenuta tramite l’ordine, che l’emergere del pensiero filosofico e matematico oscurava e in qualche modo relegava al regno della metafora. Nel corso della storia c’è stato un altro importante momento in cui vennero oscurate le conoscenze dei tessitori, quando venne sostenuto che il telaio Jacquard fosse il primo a rendere la tessitura digitale, portando al calcolo automatico.

Penelope’s Nights: Weaving as a Technical Mode of Existence

In our Project PENELOPE*, we argue that, in archaic times (in Greece and parts of Italy), the logic and technology of weaving on the warp-weighted loom was able to represent a pre-scientific paradigm of knowledge-through-order which the emergence of philosophical and mathematical thinking obscured and somewhat relegated to the realm of metaphor.

In the course of history, there is another big step of obscuring the knowledge of weavers by claiming that the Jacquard loom was the first to make weaving digital, leading to automatic computation. L’interattività digitale contemporanea si basa su tecniche e strategie tratte dalla cultura artigianale, portandoci ad unire, con una certa agilità, frammenti di dati che contribuiscono alla costruzione di insiemi più ampi.

Essenziale per l’economia dei media partecipativi in rete, questa manodopera viene estratta dalle false spoglie del tempo libero e del divertimento. Sempre più spesso, però, il valore derivato da queste attività si trova non solo nei dati di produzione e di consumo, ma anche nella regolare raccolta e analisi dei dati biometrici e medici che da essi derivano. Che questo avvenga attraverso le applicazioni per la quantificazione dell’esercizio fisico, il monitoraggio fisiologico, o l’apporto nutrizionale, o tramite alcune caratteristiche tecniche dei prodotti, come la registrazione delle impronte digitali o il riconoscimento facciale per sbloccare i device, o la mappatura genetica per le banche dati genealogiche, il nostro corpo sta diventando sempre più spesso il materiale di base attraverso il quale plasmiamo la nostra esistenza digitale e la nostra rilevanza. Qual è la potenziale relazione tra questa raccolta di dati e i modelli di interfaccia basati sull’artigianato? In che modo la sempre più invasiva raccolta di dati biometrici e medici ha sfruttato la natura informale, interpersonale e collaborativa della creazione collettiva online? Rispondendo a queste domande, questa presentazione sostiene che, proprio come l’artigianato ha spesso connotati di generosità e condivisione, le pratiche digitali artigianali possono incoraggiare i partecipanti a dare più di se stessi — sia in termini di manodopera che di dati fisici e medici — come prova del loro impegno sociale in rete e della loro vitalità.

Data, Bodies, and the Piecework of Digital Interactivity

Contemporary digital interactivity relies on techniques and strategies drawn from craft culture as we readily piece together scraps of data to contribute to larger assemblages. Essential to the economy of networked participatory media, this labor is extracted under the guise of leisure and entertainment. More and more, however, the value derived from these activities is found not only in the data of production and consumption, but also in the regular collection and analysis of our corollary biometric and medical data. Whether through apps for exercise quantification, physiological monitoring, or nutritional intake, or product features such as fingerprint and facial recognition locks, or genetic mapping for genealogical databases, our bodies increasingly are becoming the base material through which we shape our digital existence and relevance. What is the potential relationship between this data collection and craft-based models of interface?

How has increasingly invasive biometric and medical data harvesting exploited the informal, interpersonal, and collaborative nature of collective on-line creation?

In responding to these questions, this presentation argues that just as crafts have often connoted generosity and sharing, craft-like digital practices can encourage participants to give more of themselves — both in terms of their labor and their physical and medical data — as evidence of their networked social commitment and viability.

La creazione di codici è un’iniziativa che porta ad esplorare come l’artigianato tessile e l’arte abbiano influenzato lo sviluppo della codifica informatica, dell’ingegneria del software e del pensiero computazionale.

Mentre la comunità informatica si muove per aprirsi ad una partecipazione più diversificata, la metodologia di scrittura dei codici ha l’audacia di lasciarci immaginare che gli artigiani, che almeno in passato erano in gran parte donne, abbiano una ricca e millenaria cultura nella scrittura di codici. Chi progettava le trame dei patchwork ha creato algoritmi per la generazione e l’analisi di modelli su un piano cartesiano che precedono di molto l’invenzione della grafica digitale.

Code Crafting as Generative Design

Code crafting is an initiative to explore how textile crafting and art influenced the development of computer coding, software engineering, and computational thinking.

As the computer science community moves to create more diverse participation, the code crafting methodology audaciously proposes that crafters, who are primarily women, have a rich culture of coding that goes back millennia. Patchwork designers created algorithms for pattern generation and analysis in a Cartesian plane long before digital graphics were invented.

E invece questo lavoro è il premio alla lucida e audace follia di un artista che sa guardare al mondo tecnologico e analogico da prospettive sempre nuove e mai scontate, la rivincita del piccolo mondo che sa farsi unico e grande. È la dimostrazione di come i piccoli centri racchiudano storie di inestimabile valore culturale e umano, che la città non sa e spesso non può preservare, e di come il cosiddetto panorama delle organizzazioni culturali indipendenti, o meglio ‘interdipendenti’, a cui Ramdom orgogliosamente appartiene, possa apportare metodologie e contenuti di lavoro originali e innovativi nel mondo dell’arte contemporanea.

This Project Was Going to Die Before It Was Even Born

This work is, instead, the prize for the lucid and daring madness of an artist who knows how to look at the technological and analogical world from new perspectives, which he never takes for granted. A payback to a small world that can turn itself into something unique and great. It is proof of the priceless cultural and humane value of small town stories, unknown to the city who is often incapable of treasuring them, and of how the socalled panorama of independent, or rather ‘interdependent’ cultural organizations, to which Ramdom proudly belongs, can bring to the world of contemporary art original and innovative methodologies and contents.

Il non profit in Italia: una ricostruzione storica e prospettive per un rapporto con le istituzioni museali di Lorenzo Balbi / Direttore del MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna (Italia)

Gli spazi indipendenti in Italia sono una realtà sempre più riconosciuta all’interno del sistema dell’arte. Per un’accurata ricerca sul panorama artistico italiano, è fondamentale considerare le loro programmazioni che si distinguono per la sperimentazione e la creazione di nuovi linguaggi. Parallelamente, il Museo ha oggi la responsabilità di presentare il risultato di queste ricerche, inserendosi all’interno di politiche di acquisizione di opere inedite di artisti italiani di nuova generazione, con il fine di promuoverli e valorizzarli.

Se consideriamo tali spazi come autentici focolai di produzione intellettuale e sperimentazione, necessari al tessuto culturale di un territorio, come e su quale piano è possibile dialogare con essi? Come incoraggiare pratiche artistiche e curatoriali seminali? Come ripensare i margini di una collezione ipotizzando un nuovo e più stretto dialogo tra artisti storicizzati e artisti più recenti?

The Non Profit Sector in Italy: A Historical Reconstruction and Prospects for Relations With Museum Institutions

Independent spaces are an increasingly acknowledged reality within the Italian art system. To successfully research the Italian art scene, it is essential to consider their exhibition programs and how they stand out through experimentations and the creation of new languages.

Concurrently, Museums are now responsible for presenting the results of these researches, promoting acquisition policies that include new works from the latest generation of Italian artists, with the aim of promoting and uplifting them. If we consider these spaces as authentic hotbeds of intellectual production and experimentation necessary to the cultural fabric of a territory, how and on what level is it possible to create a dialogue with them? How can we encourage seminal artistic and curatorial practices? How can we rethink the margins of a collection by suggesting a new and closer dialogue between historicized and more recent artists?

Una trama al femminile: la storia della Tessitura Giaquinto di Francesco Giaquinto / Tessitura Giaquinto, Gagliano del Capo (Italia)

La storia di Tessitura Giaquinto parla al femminile: parte da Nonna Francesca, classe 1912, una donna tenace e intraprendente, originaria di un estremo lembo di terra del Sud Italia, che si accosta all’attività già a partire dal primo Dopoguerra, epoca in cui i telai erano ancora in legno. Francesca si sposa, ma nonostante sia impegnata, come da tradizione, a gestire la casa e a crescere i figli, decide di avviare la sua attività, a partire da un telaio regolabile appartenuto a sua madre: comincia con la produzione di abiti e lenzuola, da vendere parallelamente all’attività agricola di suo marito. Una donna tenace, si diceva, che, evidentemente già appassionata di trama e ordito, in un’epoca in cui le creazioni erano legate alla necessità (abiti, tele e, soprattutto la dote per le future spose), non solo decide di fare di una passione un mestiere, ma – in questo più che mai moderna – contribuisce al fabbisogno della propria famiglia, sostenuta e incitata da suo marito, contro ogni pregiudizio di genere.

A Feminine Plot: the Story of Tessitura Giaquinto

The history of Tessitura Giaquinto speaks of women: it begins with Nonna Francesca, born in 1912, a tenacious and enterprising woman, originally from an extreme strip of land in southern Italy, who begun her activity in the early post-war period, when looms were still made of wood.

Francesca married, but despite being traditionally tied to the managing of the house and the education of her children, she decided to start her own business using an adjustable loom that belonged to her mother: she begun producing clothes and sheets to sell, while her husband continued with his farming activity. A tenacious woman, as we already said, passionate about weft and warp, who, at a time when creations were strictly linked to necessity (clothes, cloths and, above all, the dowry for brides-to-be), not only decided to make a profession out of her passion, but — more modern than ever in that — contributed to the needs of her family, supported and encouraged by her husband, against any gender based prejudice.

L’arte di tessere un codice: il telaio Jacquard, l’Analytical Engine e il lavoro delle donne di Carla Petrocelli / Docente all’Università degli Studi Aldo Moro, Bari (Italia) - autrice de “Il computer è donna”

Il matematico inglese Charles Babbage trasse ispirazione proprio dal telaio Jacquard per progettare l’Analytical Engine, il primo dispositivo programmabile della storia, con un’architettura simile a quella dei nostri Personal Computer. Rendendosi conto che l’elevato volume di schede perforate poteva essere usato per inserire formule matematiche in una macchina, Babbage si appropriò di questo sistema per programmare le sue prime macchine automatiche, separando dati e risultati dalle operazioni di calcolo controllate grazie alle schede perforate (card): «It is known as a fact that the Jacquard loom is capable of weaving any design which the imagination of man may conceive».

The Art of Weaving a Code: The Jacquard Loom, the Analytical Engine and Women’s Work

English mathematician Charles Babbage drew inspiration from the Jacquard chassis to design the Analytical Engine, the first programmable device in history to resemble, in its architecture, our Personal Computers. Realizing that the high volume of punch cards could be used to insert mathematical formulas into a machine, Babbage appropriated this system to program his first automatic machines, making sure that data and results were separated from the calculation operations controlled by punch cards: “It is known as a fact that the Jacquard loom is capable of weaving any design which the imagination of man may conceive”.

Nel teorizzare il rapporto tra automi e organismi viventi, Georges Canguilhem osserva che la “spiegazione meccanica delle funzioni della vita presuppone storicamente… la costruzione di automazioni”: sarebbe “tautologico” spiegare gli organismi viventi attraverso meccanismi che dipendono ancora dalla forza motrice umana. [1] Canguilhem comprese che l’anacronismo e l’errato riconoscimento sono endemici del rapporto uomo-macchina che abbiamo, dal 1947 in poi, chiamato “automazione”.

Se in superficie egli fa una semplice argomentazione storica sul fatto che il movimento della macchina è svincolato dalla forza motrice umana, c’è qualcosa di strano nel gesto che ne deriva: poiché i due sono svincolati, gli esseri umani possono ora essere compresi in termini di automi. Da questo punto in poi, quella relazione è caratterizzata due volte dall’anacronismo — c’è ora un abissale dilemma di priorità tra l’umano e la macchina, incentrato su quale sia tra i due a spiegare l’altro – e da un mancato riconoscimento — l’uno viene ora letto secondo le proprietà dell’altro, di cui l’altro si appropria. Allo stesso modo, quando l’automazione diventa una capacità tecnica nell’impianto Ford si verifica un altro cortocircuito, sovrapponendo anacronisticamente le macchine all’uomo — non fino a quando l’una sostituisce l’altra, ma fino a quando l’automazione adotta i contorni del carattere del lavoro umano. Ora, parlando di macchine che lavorano, ci dimentichiamo degli esseri viventi sottostanti.

After “Automation”

In theorizing the relationship between automata and living organisms, Georges Canguilhem notes that the “mechanical explanation of the functions of life historically presupposes… the construction of automations”: it would be “tautological” to explain living organisms by way of mechanisms themselves still dependent on human motive force. [1] Canguilhem understood that anachronism and misrecognition are endemic to the human-machine relation which we have, from 1947 onwards, called “automation”. If on the surface he makes a straightforward historical argument about machine motion being untethered from human motive force, there is something strange about the gesture that ensues: because the two are untethered, humans can now be understood in terms of automata. From this point on, that relation is characterized twice over by anachronism — there is now an abyssal question of priority between the human and the machine, indexed by which is said to explain the other — and misrecognition — one is now read according to the properties of the other, which the other appropriates. Likewise, when automation becomes a technical capacity in the Ford plant, another short-circuit occurs, anachronistically superimposing machines over humans — not until one replaces the other but until automation adopts the contours of human labour’s character. Now speaking about machines doing work, we forget the living things underneath.

Oggi la vita stessa può essere modellata artificialmente. Ciò ha portato anche un cambiamento radicale nella comprensione del sé, poiché la vita è diventata progettabile.

Gli sviluppi dell’ingegneria genetica contribuiscono ad una crescente tendenza ad attribuire al DNA caratteristiche individualiste dell’identità. Le riflessioni sull’identità sono state intrecciate con una dimensione biologica.

Il DNA può essere visto come un’essenza biologica? In che modo gli artisti affrontano le biotecnologie come nuova frontiera della scienza e della nostra società? In che modo gli artisti usano il DNA per la loro pratica artistica?

In che modo la pratica artistica si relaziona a ciò che la scienza può verificare? Come conteniamo e archiviamo la cultura con le potenzialità dei metodi di archiviazione biologica?

The groundbreaking developments in the life sciences contributed to the fact that the boundaries between natural and artificial life are dissolving. Today life itself can be artificially shaped. This also brought about a radical change in the understanding of the self, as life has become designable.

Genetic engineering developments contribute to an increasing tendency to attribute individualistic characteristics of identity to DNA. The reflections on identity have been added with a biological dimension.

Can DNA be seen as a biological essence? How are artists addressing biotechnologies as the new frontier of science and our society? How are artists using DNA for their artistic practice? How is artistic practice relating to what science can verify? How do we contain and archive culture with the potential of biological archiving methods?

Verso un nuovo paradigma dell’esistenza umana: la pratica e l’intuitività di Emilio Vavarella di Davide Quadrio / Direttore Arthub Asia e curatore presso l’Aurora Museum, Shanghai (Cina)

Quando si pensa all’arte digitale e all’arte generata dal computer si dimentica facilmente la sua natura di “artigianato digitale” che permette all’opera d’arte finale di essere un’opera d’arte. Maria Lai, in un’intervista, ha detto che il suo sogno più profondo sarebbe stato quello di far scrivere questa frase sugli ingressi delle scuole e dei musei “Non importa se non capisci, segui il ritmo”.

L’opera di Emilio Vavarella è una traduzione poetica delle due frasi di cui sopra, dove l’immaginazione funziona come memoria, il bisogno antropologico dell’uomo di creare bellezza e i due regni (digitale e analogico) si collegano, collassano, creano. Questa presentazione tornerà alla codifica 1-0 (genetica, matematica, biologica, digitale) creando un black out fuori scala. Questa scorciatoia è quasi una linea piatta dalla quale si presenterà la pittura preistorica nelle grotte raccolta e magicamente disposta davanti ai nostri occhi da Domingo Milella. Queste immagini cariche dell’impossibilità che il tempo-spazio creato porti a comprendere appieno il loro significato, saranno abbinate e ampliate con una serie di considerazioni intorno allo sviluppo dell’arte post-digitale che nasce da questa esigenza antropologica degli artisti (essendo essenzialmente umani) di creare, attraverso la ritualità e la gestualità (l’artigianato) un mondo di bellezza come strumento per organizzare e comprendere la vita stessa e ciò che sta nella vita che li circonda. L’intuizione prima della prassi è in realtà ciò che ha fatto dell’arte uno strumento progressivo per espandere le possibilità umane e ci ha spinto attraverso i millenni in un costante presente-futuro.

Towards a New Paradigm of Human Existence: Emilio Vavarella’s Practice and Intuition

When thinking of digital art and computer generated art we easily forget its “digital craftsmanship” nature, which allows the final work of art to be considered as such. Maria Lai said, in an interview, that her wildest dream would have been to write on the entrances of schools and museums “Non importa se non capisci, segui il ritmo” (never mind understanding, just follow the rhythm).

Emilio Vavarella’s work is a poetic translation of the two sentences above, where imagination functions as memory, human beings’ anthropological need to craft beauty and the two realms (digital and analogical) connect, collapse, create. This presentation will go back to the 1-0 coding (genetic, mathematical, biological, digital) creating a black out of sort. This short-cut resembles a flatline through which we will witness prehistoric cave paintings as they were collected and magically presented before our eyes by Domingo Milella. These images, filled with the impossibility that the time-space created will bring us to fully comprehend their meaning, will be paired and expanded with a series of considerations around the development of post-digital art, stemming from the anthropological need of artists (as they are essentially human) to create, through rituality and gestures (craftsmanship) a world of beauty as a tool to organize and understand both what lies in the life around them and life itself. Intuition before praxis is what has actually turned art into a progressive tool for the expansion of human possibilities, as it pushed us through the millennia into a constant present-future.

[…] E così il tessuto finale non è più solo il risultato di un processo tecnologico che viene da lontano, ma di un insieme di piccoli gesti carichi di emotività, di piccole incertezze, di cui Marinella, in un lento atto performativo, si fa portatrice.

La macchina, “potenza ostile”, e l’uomo — o meglio, la donna — si mettono in una condizione di scambio dialettico; dialogano producendo quei piccoli slittamenti necessari a mantenere una tensione emotiva perché dalla macchina, come avrebbe detto Carmelo Bene, non si sfugge mai e così quello che era inizialmente un processo determinato da scelte binarie torna ad essere un processo analogico e viceversa. Meglio ancora, un processo reversibile: il DNA è stato infatti codificato in modo tale che sia tecnicamente possibile decriptare il tessuto, che contiene l’intero codice genetico dell’artista, e ritornare un giorno al DNA stesso.

[…] Thus the finished textile is no longer the result of a merely technological process that comes from afar, but comes from a set of small emotional gestures, of small uncertainties, and Marinella, through a slow performative act, becomes their bearer.

The machine, “hostile power”, and the man — or better yet, the woman — put themselves in a condition of dialectical exchange; they dialogue producing the little slips that are necessary to maintain emotional tension since one can never escape from the machine, as Carmelo Bene would have put it.

What initially was a process determined by binary choices became an analogical process, and vice versa. Better yet, a reversible process: the DNA has in fact been coded in such a way that it is technically possible to decrypt the fabric, which contains the entire genetic code of the artist, to one day return to the DNA itself.

Pensare il pensiero. Appunti di processo di Emilio Vavarella / Artista e ricercatore

Tutte le mie opere nascono da un simile percorso di ricerca concettuale e tecnologica su molteplici livelli, seguito da una formalizzazione in cui gli spunti e le riflessioni che costellano la mia ricerca trovano una loro sintesi.

Nel corso degli anni ho dato vita ad un archivio molto esteso di work-in-progress: collezioni di documenti, immagini, testi, appunti o altri materiali su cui torno ciclicamente. Potrei dire che queste collezioni sono il modo attraverso cui nutro, a volte anche per anni, idee ancora ad uno stato embrionale o in lenta evoluzione. Con il progredire delle mie ricerche comincio a implementare ipotesi, tecniche, e a sperimentare diversi metodi di lavoro, alla ricerca di quelli piĂš affini ai materiali ricercati e alle domande in questione. Durante questa fase di messa in opera i materiali o le tecnologie su cui lavoro vengono stressati fino a raggiungere il loro limite interno.

Mi interessa spingere tecniche, media e concetti fino al loro punto di rottura, stressare i loro limiti interni, sfiorando quella soglia o punto di non ritorno che marca un limite fisico, tecnico, o epistemologico.

Thinking the Thought. Process Notes

All my works develop from a similar, multilayered path of conceptual and technological research, followed by a formalization that synthesizes the cues and reflections that punctuate my research. Over the years I have created a very extensive work-in-progress archive: collections of documents, images, texts, notes or other materials to which I cyclically return. I could say that these collections are the means by which I nourish, sometimes for years, ideas that are still in an embryonic or slowly evolving state. As my research progresses, I begin to implement hypotheses, techniques, and I experiment with different methodologies, looking for the ones that better resonate with the researched materials and with the issues I have been questioning. The materials or technologies on which I work during this implementation phase, are stressed until they reach their inner boundary. I am interested in pushing techniques, media and concepts to their breaking point, stressing their internal limits, touching that threshold or point of no return that marks a physical, technical, or epistemological limit.

Durante l’incontro pubblico si sono approfonditi alcuni dei temi legati alla realizzazione dell’opera d’arte finale: un tessuto che rappresenta il codice genetico dell’artista creato con un telaio Jacquard del diciannovesimo secolo.

Il telaio Jacquard, prima vera tecnologia industriale funzionante tramite un codice di tipo binario e originariamente operato solo da donne, è stato lo spunto da cui Ada Lovelace e Charles Babbage hanno realizzato la prima macchina analitica, antenata del moderno computer.

That of Brindisi was the first public event made to discuss the topics related to the realization of the final artwork and in particular the relationship between technology and the female world. The Jacquard loom, in fact, was originally operated only by women and was the starting point from which Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage made the first analytical machine, ancestor of the modern computer.

La mostra di Gagliano del Capo è la prima di un ciclo di diverse esposizioni e presentazioni internazionali.

Processo e ricerca sono al centro di questa esposizione che dà modo ai visitatori di entrare in un archivio di idee, ipotesi, errori, assunti, oggetti e immagini costruiti in progress. Una Wunderkammer in cui oggetti relativi alle discipline che alimentano l’opera finale diventano complementari ed entrano in dialogo tra di loro. Una mostra che ci rivela quanto la storia dell’uomo e della tessitura siano intrecciate tra loro da secoli e che, al contempo, ci svela l’importanza della macchina Jacquard nella storia dell’evoluzione tecnologica non solo nella tessitura, ma anche nell’informatica.

Suoni, macchine, schede perforate, codici, libri tecnici, ritagli di giornale che annunciano la rivoluzione tecnologica nel mondo dell’industria tessile, sono il cuore della mostra. La dimensione artigianale, l’alta formazione delle maestranze, sono invece attraversate dalla presenza di libri di scuola, taccuini di appunti e disegni tecnici realizzati a mano ed estremamente dettagliati provenienti dal laboratorio Castiglioni di Busto Arsizio (Varese, Italia). Le fotografie di scena scattate durante la realizzazione del video che compone l’opera di Vavarella, il codice genetico dell’artista e i ritagli di tessuto s’integrano con tutti gli altri elementi annunciando e rimandando all’opera finale.

The exhibition in Gagliano del Capo is the first of a series of different international exhibitions and presentations.

Process and research are at the heart of this exhibition that gives visitors the opportunity to enter an archive of ideas, hypotheses, errors, assumptions, objects and images built in progress. A Wunderkammer in which objects related to the disciplines that feed the final work become complementary and enter into dialogue with each other.

An exhibition that reveals how much the history of man and weaving have been intertwined for centuries and that, at the same time, reveals the importance of the Jacquard machine in the history of technological evolution not only in weaving, but also in information technology.

Sounds, machines, punch cards, codes, technical books, newspaper clippings announcing the technological revolution in the world of the textile industry are at the heart of the exhibition. The artisan dimension, the high training of the workers, are instead crossed by the presence of school books, notebooks and technical drawings made by hand and extremely detailed from the Castiglioni laboratory in Busto Arsizio (Varese, Italy). The scene photographs taken during the making of the video that composes Vavarellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s genetic code and the fabric cuttings are integrated with all the other elements announcing and referring to the final work.

< L’ALTRA FORMA DI ME > Laboratorio d’arte tessile per tre teste e quattro mani.

Partendo dall’analisi di alcuni degli aspetti fondanti di rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me), come la traduzione grafica del proprio codice genetico, la trasposizione della stessa in tessuto, la relazione tra tecnica della tessitura e codificazione alla base della scienza informatica e il rapporto madre-figlio, Ramdom ha ideato e realizzato un laboratorio rivolto a bambine e bambini dai 6 anni in su, in coppia con un genitore o accompagnatore.

Con l’uso di un semplice telaio a cornice e un metro da sarta sono stati realizzati dei piccoli arazzi nei quali l’intreccio tra ordito e trama rappresenta, in una forma ben codificata, un possibile ritratto dei piccoli partecipanti. La combinazione di colori e intrecci differenti, infatti, è il risultato di misure antropometriche precise, necessariamente uniche in quanto a loro volta risultanti dalla combinazione di più misure, esattamente come il patrimonio genetico di ognuno di noi è il risultato della somma casuale dei cromosomi ereditati dai nostri genitori. Un gioco che, svelando in parte il meccanismo dell’opera, ne facilita la comprensione e promuove allo stesso tempo l’avvicinamento dei bambini, e dei loro accompagnatori, al mondo — e ai modi — della produzione artistica contemporanea.

< L’ALTRA FORMA DI ME > Textile art workshop for three heads and four hands.

Starting from the analysis of some of the founding aspects of rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me), such as the graphic translation of its genetic code, its transposition into fabric, the relationship between weaving technique and coding at the basis of computer science and the mother-child relationship, Ramdom has designed and built a laboratory aimed at girls and boys from 6 years old, in pairs with a parent or guardian.

With the use of a simple frame frame and a dressmaker’s tape measure, small tapestries were created in which the interweaving between warp and weft represents, in a well-coded form, a possible portrait of the young participants. The combination of different colours and weaves, in fact, is the result of precise anthropometric measurements, necessarily unique in that they in turn result from the combination of several measurements, just as the genetic heritage of each of us is the result of the random sum of the chromosomes inherited from our parents.

A game which, by partly revealing the mechanism of the work, facilitates its comprehension and at the same time promotes the approach of children, and their companions, to the world — and ways — of contemporary artistic production.

Ramdom è un’associazione di produzione culturale e artistica con sede a Gagliano del Capo, in provincia di Lecce. Fondata nel 2011 da Paolo Mele e Luca Coclite, promuove progetti d’arte contemporanea con respiro internazionale in dialogo con il territorio del Salento, come Indagine sulle Terre Estreme e DEFAULT, attraverso mostre, installazioni d’arte pubblica, residenze, workshop ed incontri. Nel 2016 ha lanciato il programma di Residenze Sino alla Fine del Mare dedicato ad artisti e curatori under 35. Lastation, la sua base operativa e spazio espositivo, si trova al primo piano della Stazione Ferroviaria Gagliano-Leuca, ultima attiva nel sud-est d’Italia.

Ramdom is an organization devoted to cultural and artistic production, based in Gagliano del Capo, Italy. It was founded in 2011 by Paolo Mele and Luca Coclite with the aim of providing international projection to contemporary art projects produced in dialogue with the local territory of Salento. Over the past seven years, its activities have included exhibitions, public art productions, residencies, and workshops, plus two ongoing research-focused endeavors: Investigation of Extreme Lands and DEFAULT. In 2016 it launched Until the End of the Sea Residency program, dedicated to artists and curators under thirty-five.

Ramdom’s headquarters, Lastation, is located on the first floor of a still-active railway station (Gagliano–Leuca) in southeast Italy and is home to a media library, a residency room, and an open space for exhibitions and performances.

Emilio Vavarella (Monfalcone 1989) è artista e ricercatore presso la Harvard University, dove sta conseguendo un dottorato in Film, Visual Studies e Critical Media Practice. Il suo lavoro coniuga ricerca interdisciplinare e sperimentazione mediale. Le sue opere esaminano il rapporto tra soggettività, creatività non-umana, e potere tecnologico.

Emilio Vavarella’s work combines interdisciplinary research and media experimentation. His work examines the relationship between subjectivity, non-human creativity, and technological power.
