Ai nuovi estimatori del Salento da cartolina e agli ormai milioni di visitatori temporanei del Tacco dello Stivale, la definizione di Terra Estrema applicata al Capo di Leuca potrebbe sembrare un po’ esagerata.

Cosa ci sarebbe di così estremo in un territorio che è ormai considerato come una delle principali mete turistiche al mondo e con un’offerta attrattiva, culinaria e paesaggistica di primo piano?

Difficile trovare qualcuno che abbia visitato questi luoghi e non ne sia rimasto affascinato.

Eppure, la storia e la geografia ci raccontano un’altra vicenda. Ci raccontano di una terra povera, martoriata dalle emigrazioni di uomini e donne in cerca di lavoro, di una vita più dignitosa, di fortuna. Di una terra isolata, remota, con poche e spesso malfunzionanti infrastrutture.

L’infanzia e l’adolescenza nelle terre estreme saranno state certamente autentiche ma, prive di molti stimoli: in alcuni momenti ho versato lacrime di frustrazione su quella terra rosso argilla e sugli scogli appuntiti a strapiombo sul mare.

Poi, finalmente, i viaggi, le scoperte, le conoscenze, le esperienze hanno trasformato quello sguardo rancoroso in una consapevolezza del potenziale di questa terra e dunque in una volontà di cambiamento, di ribaltamento della prospettiva. “Gli ultimi saranno i primi”, ci è sempre stato detto, e noi, che oggettivamente siamo gli ultimi, ci siamo trovati dinanzi ad una scelta: continuare a “piangere miseria” o ribaltare canoni, prospettive e cartine geografiche e provare non tanto a essere i primi, ma ad avere un ruolo da attori, e non comparse, nella nuova narrazione contemporanea.

E così, parafrasando Crespi, abbiamo provato a trasformare la periferia in «un atto ultimativo dell’esistere, in esilio da codici formalizzati»1.

Sono cresciuto con la consapevolezza di essere lontano da tutti e da tutto: dagli amici, che piano piano si allontanavano per studio o lavoro; dai parenti, emigrati o trasferiti nel nord Italia; dalla città, Lecce, lontana oltre 60 km; dal capoluogo di regione, Bari, che di chilometri ne dista ben 250; dal Molise, così piccolo, ma così lontano (420 km), da Roma (680 km), da Milano (1100 km); dai centri culturali; dai musei; dalle gallerie; dai contesti internazionali.

Indagine sulle terre estreme L’indagine sulle terre estreme nasce, nel 2014, da queste fondamenta. Un progetto aperto in cui artisti, studiosi, curatori, operatori culturali e cittadini si confrontano sul tema della produzione artistica in contesti remoti e marginali, dando vita a lavori site specific e a una nuova mappatura del territorio. Un processo di analisi sulla vita, la cultura, la socialità nelle estremità e negli estremismi delle terre.

Oggi, parlando di terre estreme il pensiero va subito a luoghi in cui le condizioni climatiche e ambientali sono impervie e mettono continuamente alla prova le abilità dell’uomo, che per istinto di sopravvivenza a esse si adatta e si modella. Il termine “estremo” (dal latino extremus, superlativo di exter o extĕrus “che sta fuori”), nella sua accezione primaria, non fa riferimento alle condizioni avverse, bensì a ciò «che è o rappresenta il termine ultimo, in senso locale o temporale, di qualche cosa».

Nelle lingue anglosassoni, invece, si è soliti parlare di Land’s end: se ne contano quasi due decine in tutto il mondo, alcune più note altre meno. Non a caso, nel passato erano considerate estreme quelle terre che segnavano la fine dell’impero o delle terre conosciute, come nel caso dei Finis terrae dell’impero romano: dal Capo di Leuca, alla Bretagna, alla Galizia. Oltre, l’ignoto, l’orizzonte sconosciuto, il mare senza fine.

La nostra riflessione parte da qui, dalla fine. O dal Capo. Dalla fine dei binari ferroviari - laddove oggi sorge la nostra casa, Lastation - al punto in cui la roccia si tuffa nello Ionio protendendosi verso il sud del mondo e oltre.

La metodologia di lavoro Lavorare nell’ultimo villaggio del Tacco d’Italia o nel primo a nord ovest, per molti aspetti non fa troppa differenza:

ciò che conta è sempre l’approccio e la metodologia, il dialogo con i territori e con i suoi protagonisti attivi e passivi.

Il cielo, che lo si guardi dall’osservatorio di Milano o di Salve (LE) è sempre lo stesso, a cambiare è la prospettiva e, dunque, le possibilità interpretative. Vi è certamente una differenza sostanziale tra operare nella città o nel piccolo centro, ancor più se remoto e geograficamente più vicino a Grecia e Albania che al resto d’Italia. Di fatto siamo una penisola nella penisola; questa condizione, oltre ad aver amplificato l’idea di essere un territorio periferico, ha suggestionato e alimentato la nostra ricerca e la nostra narrativa, offrendo tanti spunti di riflessione e lavoro a noi e agli artisti.

con temi di grande attualità come quelli legati alle migrazioni culturali, allo spopolamento, alla sostenibilità, al turismo di massa e non per ultimo anche ai soldi delle società che, distribuendo sponsorizzazioni, cercano di comprare la benevolenza di un territorio e dei suoi cittadini, mentre lo violentano.

E invece spesso non è così.

Ma se è vero che il luogo in cui si nasce e cresce forgia il carattere dei suoi abitanti, quel che è certo è che abbiamo imparato come sopravvivere anche in condizioni estreme. Nell’attesa e nella speranza che anche nei luoghi della politica e della burocrazia ci possa essere una rivoluzione copernicana, culturale I lavori di Andreco, Carboni, Coclite, e organizzativa. A volte qualche luce Andrew Friend e Brett Swenson han- S’Illumina. no creato le fondamenta del processo, partendo dall’analisi del confine, del paesaggio umano e naturale, dei fallimenti, dell’abbandono. Poi siamo scesi sottoterra, con il lavoro di Carlos Casas e Matthew Wilson, per poi ritornare alla società, con Romina De Novellis, ai delicati equilibri tra uomo e natura, con Elena Mazzi e Rosario Sorbello. Ma la lista sarebbe molto più lunga, e oggi contiamo oltre cento ospiti che ci hanno aiutato in questo lavoro.

Gli artisti con cui abbiamo collaborato nel corso di questi anni, seppur talvolta anche molto diversi tra loro per approccio di lavoro e medium utilizzati, come si evince anche da questa pubblicazione, hanno in comune la capacità di saper andare in profondità nello studio dei territori, delle comunità, di sapersi mettere in discussione, di riuscire a rinegoziare la propria pratica sulla base degli stimoli assorbiti durante i processi di residenza. Non siamo una galleria, la nostra priorità non è l’opera-ficio, bensì la produzione di contributi critici e di qualità nel panorama della cultura contemporanea. Ai nostri ospiti chiediamo di aiutarci a riflettere su temi che impattano sulla vita di un territorio che, sebbene si trovi nell’estrema periferia d’Italia, deve continuamente misurarsi

Quando abbiamo cominciato non avevamo chiara la direzione intrapresa: in Italia è quasi impossibile una programmazione di lungo respiro, perché la ricerca e la sostenibilità di organizzazioni culturali come le nostre è sempre molto fragile e soggetta alla schizofrenia delle politiche locali e nazionali. Quello di Ramdom oggi si presenta come un lavoro culturale e, per diversi aspetti, politico, prima ancora che artistico. Ci confrontiamo quotidianamente su temi che dovrebbero essere nelle agende culturali, economiche e sociali di ogni Regione, di ogni Amministrazione.

Until the end of the sea Paolo Mele

To the new admirers of the postcard-format Salento and to the now millions of temporary visitors to the heel of the boot, the definition of extreme land may seem an overstatement when applied to the Cape of Leuca.

What could be so extreme in a territory that is now considered one of the main tourist destinations in the world offering unequaled cuisine and magnificent landscape?

It is difficult to find someone who has visited these places and did not remain fascinated.

And yet history and geography tell us another story: they speak of a poor land, devastated by the emigration of men and women in search of work, of a more dignified life, of fortune; an isolated, remote land with few and often obsolete infrastructures.

I grew up with the awareness of being far from everyone and from everything: from friends, who were slowly moving away to study or work; from relatives who emigrated or were transferred to northern Italy; from the city, Lecce, over 60 km away; from the region’s capital, Bari, distant 250 km; from Molise, so small, but so far (420km), from Rome (680km), from Milan (1100km); from the cultural centres; from museums;

from galleries; from international contexts.

Childhood and adolescence in the extreme lands was certainly authentic but deprived of stimuli: at times I shed tears of frustration onto the red clay ground and on the cliffs dropping sheer to the sea.

Then, finally, through travels, discoveries, knowledge, experiences, that begrudging look gave way to an awareness of the potential offered by this land and therefore the determination to change, to overturn the perspective. We were always told that “the last will be first”, and we, who objectively are the last, are faced with a choice: either continue to “plead poverty” or begin to overturn the rules, possibilities and maps and try not necessarily to be the first, but to play a major role in the new contemporary experience. And so, to paraphrase Crespi, we tried to transform the periphery into «an ultimate act of being, exiled from formalized codes». 1

Today, when we speak of extreme lands, we immediately think of places where the climatic and environmental conditions are harsh and continually challenge the skills of man, who adapts thanks to his survival instinct. In its primary meaning, the term “extreme” (from the Latin extremus, superlative of exter or extìrus “that which stands out”) does not refer to adverse conditions, but to that «that which represents the local or temporal limit of something».

In Anglo-Saxon languages, however, it is customary to talk about Land’s end: there are almost twenty in the whole world, some better known, some less.

It’s no coincidence that in the past, the extreme lands were those that marked the end of an empire or of the known lands, as in the case of the Roman Empire’s Finis terrae: from the Cape of Leuca to Brittany, to Galicia. Beyond, the unknown, the unexplored horizon, the endless sea.

Our reflection begins here, from the end. Or the Cape. From the end of the railroad tracks - where our home rises, Lastation - to the point where the cliff dives into the Ionian Sea, stretching out towards the south of the world and beyond.

Investigation of extreme lands This is how the investigation of the extreme lands began in 2014. It is an open project in which artists, scholars, curators, cultural operators and citizens confront each other on the subject of artistic production in remote and marginal contexts, giving rise to site-specific works and a new mapping of the territory. An analytic process about the life, culture, sociality in the extremities and in the extremism of lands.

The methodology of work In many respects, wether one is working in the last village of the heel of Italy or the first in the northwest does not make much difference: what matters is always the approach and methodol-

ogy, the dialogue with the territory and with its active and passive protagonists.

The sky is always the same, wether it is seen from the Observatory in Milan or from Salve (LE). Only the perspective changes and, therefore, the possibilities of interpretation. There certainly is a substantial difference between working in a city or in a small town, even more so if it is remote and geographically closer to Greece and Albania than to the rest of Italy. In fact we are a peninsula in the peninsula, this condition not only amplifies the idea of being a peripheral territory, but has influenced and fuelled our research and our history, offering stimulus for reflection for us as well as for the guest artists.

Over the years, we collaborated with artists working with very different approaches or mediums, as seen in this publication. But they all have in common the ability to make an in-depth investigation of the territory, the community, to challenge their assumptions, to renegotiate their practice on the basis of the stimuli absorbed during the residency. We are not a gallery, our priority is not to produce work, but quality critical input in the panorama of contemporary culture. We ask our guests to help us reflect upon issues that have an impact on the life of a territory. Although it is on the extreme edge of Italy, this land must continually measure itself with topics of great relevance such as those linked to cultural migrations, depopulation, sustainability, mass tourism

and not least also to the money of companies that, through sponsorship, try to buy the sympathy of a territory and of its citizens, while plundering it.

Through their works, Andreco, Carboni, Coclite, Andrew Friend and Brett Swenson established the foundations of the process, by analysing the boundaries, the human and natural landscape, the failures, the abandonment. We then moved below the surface, through the work of Carlos Casas and Matthew Wilson, and back to society, with Romina De Novellis, and to the delicate balance between man and nature, with Elena Mazzi and Rosario Sorbello. The list would be much longer, and until today, more than one hundred guests have worked with us on this project.

When we began, we did not understand the direction we were taking: in Italy it is almost impossible to plan ahead, because the sustainability of cultural organizations like ours is always very fragile and subject to the schizophrenia of local and national policies. Today, Ramdom presents itself not only as a cultural endeavour but also as a political one, even more so than artistic. We confront each other daily on issues that should be in the cultural, economic and social agendas of each region, of each administration. It is often not so.

But if it is true that our character is formed by the place where we were born and grew up, we certainly have learned to survive even in extreme conditions.

In the expectation and in the hope that there can be a Copernican, cultural and organizational revolution even in the haunts of politics and bureaucracy.

Sometimes Enlightenment occurs.
