This is the time of the year when we focus on election of officers. This year we will have one officer position, that of Club Treasurer. York has decided he has served his two years and does not want to run for another term so that becomes an open officer position we will need to fill. The Club Bylaws stipulate that the Treasurer position is one of the four officer positions filled by popular vote of all Club members, but we need candidates for members to vote on.
If you are interested in serving a two-year term as Club Treasurer or know any member who you feel would be interested in the Club Treasurer position, please provide that information to Vice President Stu Malakoff at stu@bendwealth.com, phone number 609-933-7085, by October 15. We want to thank York for his service as Club Treasurer for the past two years.
Next, April 29 is the High Desert Regions' 25th Year Anniversary and we want to properly celebrate it. Therefore, we are looking for club members who would like to help plan this very special event. I encourage as may members as possible to join in planning the activities. If this interests you, please contact Gretchen Kolb at gretchenkolb@icloud.com, phone number 541788-3861.
Keep driving your Porsche as long as weather allows.

The HDR New Member Picnic on September 7th was a huge success. This was our largest event in years and 25 new members attended. This was a great Porsche event.
Downshift this month will feature about 70 photos and 20 pages of the HDR picnic, the most ever for a featured article I tried to get everyone’s photo but I was busy meeting people, and all the wonderful food! Thanks for all your smiles.
Special thanks to the volunteers at the New Member Picnic, our hosts Tracy and Mike, and to Gretchen and Jerry for coordinating all the details..
As a passenger, I was able to take some amazing photos of Porsches and sunset on the Sunset Dinner Cruise Arrive and Drive event on September 25th. Photos start on page 39 and one more on the back/last page.
Though the driving season is winding down, there are plenty of HDR events scheduled for the rest of the year.

The High Desert Region Register and Drive is changing for 2024 to Arrive and Drive. There will be no registration or fee for these drives and no directions will be handed out for the drives. We will have separate arrive drives for Porsche SUV owners and separate Saturday Arrive and Drive events. We will also have separate Classic Car Group Arrive and Drives for air cooled and early transaxle Porsches.
There will be several requirements from the participants to make these group drives fun and successful and we are asking for your help to keep these events enjoyable We will be starting our drives from locations outside Bend and they will be different for each monthly drive
Arrive and Drive Rules:
All of the Arrive and Drive events are group drives and will be two to three hours in length on the beautiful roads of Central Oregon.
(1) Since these are group drives and we will be obeying all safety and speed laws all participants are expected to stay together as a group, this includes drive leaders and drive sweeps.
(2) This is not a race and there will be no passing of other cars in our group.
(3) The participants are required to keep the car behind them in sight and also to keep the pace of the car in front The drivers will be required to wait for the car behind them at intersections and corners to insure we stay together as a group. The lead cars will slow or pull over to wait for the cars to remain together and keep everyone in sight so we can continue as a group.
(4) There is no rubber banding allowed and if you want to drive faster or slower than the group please remember this is a group drive and you will be asked to maintain the group pace.
(5) If you are not comfortable with these rules then please don't keep the other participants from enjoying the drives we have planned.

The HDR New Member Picnic was held again at the Wild Wood Ranch hosted by Tracy and Chef Mike.
The 40 acre ranch has horses, huge barn, out buildings, interesting sculptures, and so many cool things.
We expected a big turn out of our membership and this property was perfect for our picnic.
There was a brief rain storm in the morning and we all helped to towel dry chairs, tables, anything that was wet.
Tracy welcomed our members.
The vintage, newer, and brand new!
Before the picnic, we held a new member orientation for 25 new HDR members.

Tracy and Chef Mike graciously offered to host our HDR New Member Picnic. They both worked many hours to make this event happen. The people of our club is what makes HDR so special.
Chef Mike patiently instructs Fred how to properly cut the tri tip and not his finger tip.
The HDR membership brought plenty of side dishes for all to enjoy.
Though the morning was wet and cloudy, the sun came out just in time for a very pleasant day.
There was plenty of conversations with old and new members, Porsches were a main topic!
Fred takes a well deserved rest.
This new member picnic had about 115 attendees and was the most successful event the HDR has held. You can thank all the volunteers who helped with this event. Special thanks to Gretchen and Jerry.

Ramblings and photos by Ralph Anzellotti
The ride started at 6pm with promises of being back in time for dinner at 7pm. This was a 44 mile one hour drive on “spirted” Porsche rated roads and curves from Redmond to Prineville and back.
The weather was a mix of dark clouds and sun, high expectations abounded as we hoped for dry roads.
We had a good turn out of a dozen Porsches, including Mike’s Macan.
It was great seeing some newer faces and seasoned club members that could only attend an evening drive.
I think Lisa had a great idea with a Sunset Dinner Cruise Arive and Drive.
A dozen Porches lined up at the Crooked River Wetlands Project in Prineville. The roads remained dry and the sunset was amazing for the return trip back to Redmond.
The return trip treated us to a brilliant sunset ablaze with vibrant colors and cloud formations.
We retuned to Redmond at 7:04pm delayed briefly by road construction.
Dinner at The Blacksmith Public House in downtown Redmond was a real treat with food trucks and indoor pub. The HomeSlice Tavern Style Pizza was simply amazing!
Several members decided to have dinner outside next to a glowing fire pit, while other went inside the pub sitting at long heavy wood tables.
I look forward to another Sunset Dinner Cruise before we all put away our Porsches for the winter.

I am from the South. Not SOCAL or Southern Oregon but Nashville and one learns quickly the meaning of the terms “boss man” and “big boss man” aka the “big dog.” As in “let the big dog eat.” As in do what the big boss says. These may seem archaic to each of you but they are lodged deep in my over active brain cells. So when Downshift’s editor Ralph Anzellotti (aka “boss man”) asks me to get another Shoplight ready for publication I tend to move. And when the big boss man, Fred Nielsen, suggests doing a piece on a specific shop, in this case Perfection Plus Auto Salon, he has my full attention. So let the big dog eat…
We in Central Oregon are blessed with a number of fine Porsche and other high-end shops that cater to keeping our cars running strong and looking great. Just check out past Shoplight columns for reference.
For our latest Shoplight, lets run up the 18 or so miles to Redmond and Perfection Plus Auto Salon and visit owner Shane Mayfield for a spirited afternoon getting to know what Shane is doing. Fred tagged along as his interest in Perfection Plus waspiqued after seeing a 1988 911 Carrera at the new member’s picnic that had been detailed and paint corrected by Shane last year.
Shane moved up to Redmond from California in 2009 and opened Perfection Plus in 2010. He currently employs six full time and one part time technicians. Growing up in Santa Rosa, Shane learned automobile painting and repair in his Dad’s custom hot rod shop. Working for other paint shops under the insurance company gun taught Shane what he didn’t want to do so he branched out to the detailing, paint correction, window tinting, protective coating, paint protection and maintenance programs he enjoys best. And as you know, when you enjoy doing something you tend to do it in top notch fashion.
Shane is driven by core beliefs he practices each day: Strengthening his personal, spiritual and professional relationships, keeping his mental and physical focus sharp and making sure he is emotionally ready for every task. In his front office is a large 12-point poster labelled “Our Core Values” Shane developed for his life and business. It is an impressive list and clearly these values work for this shop.
Shane and Perfection Plus have been selected for a number of years as part of the Air Force One Detailing Team. Quite an honor for him.
One very interesting product offering is wrapping. In the shop Fred (Big Boss Man) and I saw a newly wrapped Tesla Cybertruck done up in a white carbon fiber look wrap. Gotta tell you it looked terrific and clearly pointed to a future for auto finishes. Shane asks, “why would an automobile company spend so much money and labor on painting when wraps are easier and more cost effective?”
I was a little unsteady on exactly what the term ‘paint correction’ means. And with good reason. That term covers a plethora of repairs to the clear coat caused by scratches, swirls, natural contaminants like pine sap, insect acids, dirt and other paint affecting substances. One thing it is not is a repainting of a problem area. Think of paint correction as using specialized machines and products to remove microscopic layers of clear coat, making the surface smooth once again.
Once paint correction is completed you may then want to move on to a ceramic coating or other finishing process to protect your paint. Perfection Plus offers from 1 year to lifetime options for ceramic coating. Returning each year after to have the coating refurbished is part of the plan.
In the meantime Shane has a few tips for HDRPCA club members. Do not use a pressure washer when cleaning your car unless it is winter and you are removing chunks of ice or frozen mud. Try not to touch the paint surface with your bare hands. Use a Ph neutral soap to wash the vehicle and to dry, drag a clean towel across the surface. Lastly, do not use wax as a finish, instead opt for a ceramic coating for optimal protection. And be advised the ceramic coating products found at Walmart and auto parts stores are not the same as professional ceramic coating.
Fred was so excited visiting Shane and Perfection Plus that he quickly decided it would be an excellent place to have a tech session. Stay tuned for that event.
As with many Shoplight vendors, Shane is offering HDRPCA members added benefits when working on your P-car. Just mention you are a member and Shane will work with you on a sweet little bonus for your car’s finish. It is difficult if not impossible to list prices for the work Shane and his team offer as each project can differ wildly. Best thought is to set up an appointment with Shane and discuss the best options for your vehicle.
And lastly, like many others, Shane will quickly ID the GT3 RS as his ultimate Porsche. Thanks again to HDRPCA President Fred Nielsen (Big Boss Man) for accompanying me on my latest Shoplight effort.

Everyone loves palm trees surrounded by sunny blue sky’s, warm tropical breezes, and pina coladas.
Downshift will feature this tropical theme in 2024 because it feels so perfect to combine Porches and palm trees with the roar of engines!
