As we approach the 2025 driving season, it's good to take a minute to review Mike Simmons' rules of the road designed for fun and safe drives and let members know what drives are in place this year. I want to thank the Club volunteers who attended last year's Drive Leader Training and have stepped up to help with this year's drives. We have drives scheduled for all Porsche vehicles and classic cars beginning June 7 through October. For our June 7 drive, we will meet on the east side of Bend and drive through the Crooked River Canyon to Post. That drive will be led by York Schueller. Further details of the drive and future drives can be found in the Monday Morning Messages and on our website. We ask members to sign up for the drives so we have information to assist in planning the number of groups needed for each drive.
For our drives to be safe and enjoyable for all members, we ask members to follow our printed "rules of the road." First, we observe the speed limits and stay together as a group. Second, no passing of other cars in our group. Third, keep the car in front of you and behind you in your vision at all times and, four, no rubber banding where you hold back and then accelerate to catch up.
Based on prior years' experience, rule #3 is where we have problems. Some members fail to keep up with the car in front of them which slows down the drive for everyone behind them, and forces everyone to drive much faster if they want to catch up. This year, we are asking members who are uncomfortable with keeping pace with the car in front of them to drive at the back of their group.
On the other hand, if you don't see the car behind you, you should slow down or stop until they are in your vision. If everyone follows that rule, soon the leader will see cars behind have slowed down and they will slow down until the group catches up.
Our drives are one of the Club's most enjoyable events for many members and special attention to the details discussed above will make for an enjoyable HDR driving season. I will see you on the road.

Horse power is the basis of how we somehow define car engines and of course Porsches. The Kentucky Derby is about only one horse power winning the race. Porsches have many hundreds of horses. What is the definition of horse power?
The term horse power was adopted in the late 18th century by Scottish engineer James Watt to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses. It was later expanded to include the output power of other power-generating machinery such as piston engines, turbines, and electric motors..
Both horses and Porsches burn fuel and make rumbling exhaust sounds. The Porsche is faster, the horse is equally beautiful and majestic.
The Porsche logo is embedded with a stallion, the factory was built on a horse farm in Stutgard, Germany.

Go back in history where the "Cowboys" and the "Indians" ruled the land. Oregon's iconic town of Pendleton is the home of famous Cowboys and Indians that we will get to know through our tour of the Pendleton RoundUp and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame, the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, and an "Underground Tour" that is a "Place where culture is kept, history is told, and legends live on".
We will dine at local favorite restaurants including: Hamley Steakhouse and Saloon (Est. 1883), Prodigal Son Brewery and Pub, not to mention, a visit to the Wildhorse Resort and Casino! Our lodging, The Oxford Suites, is centrally located for our group.
Eight Porsches and sixteencowboys and cowgirls braved the drive over mountains and deserts, ever watchful of rustlers and injuns.
. Pendleton’s famous hang out, the Pendleton Hat Company., is also the place for an authentic cowboy hat. Be sure to join our venture to try on as many cowboy hats that you admire. Perk Perkins will custom fit your style making a testimony to their fame; “Premier Hatter in Pendleton, Oregon of Beaver and Rabbit fur felt hats.”
Our final night out was filled with cowboy steaks and grub. Audrey set up a large private room for the gang and it was a fun filled evening reminiscing about the past days adventures.

Even though the day started out cloudy that didn’t stop around 50 members from gathering at German Master Tech on the Northside of Bend. Tim the owner was the one giving the talk and showing us around his shop. It was almost like cars and coffee with many different Porches in a wide array of colors. From a lime green 914 to a striking yellow Cayman GTS it was sure a beautiful sight to see all the cars in the parking lot. We started off the morning chatting in front of the shop and then slowly migrated into the Tims beautiful shop.
Inside the shop, the layout was great with different separate rooms and the highlight for me was that the waiting area felt like a museum, and had a few very cool cars including 2 BMW 2002’s that caught my eye. Everywhere in the shop everything was very clean and organized. Really liked the layer of protective coating recently put in over the concrete floors. It seemed genius no more worrying about spilling oil and having to deal with the stains, you just have to wipe it up! It also made the shop look even more nice and tidy.
In the main room where we all gathered there were 5 car lifts laid out around the edge of the shop. In the center sat two 356 speedsters, one replica and one original. What beautiful cars these were! I personally loved the sleek curvy lines of these and can see why many people are enthralled by these older cars On one of the lifts sat a pristine white 912 Tim began explaining what it takes to restore a car and get a car ready for a concours d'elegance One of the interesting points he talked about was the fact that although you might think the concours is focused on having the cleanest/nicest car with no flaws It is more about the originality of the car and how close it is to when it rolled out of the factory. I found this to be very interesting and cool because always thought as long as everything was pristine you could win.
I also got the chance to sneak into the next building with one of the weirdest cars, a BMW Isetta, I had only seen jokes of this car online and was shocked at how small it was! The gearshift lever looked like it would break shifted a little too hard andthought it was very interesting how the BWM designers designed the steering wheel so it could move with the door. I just thought that was a very cool piece of engineering that made the car very functional.
Tim began explaining how his shop goes about the restoration process of a customer’s car. He also gave some useful ways to find parts for older cars that may not have factory parts still being made. We finally looked at a beautiful miami blue turbo S cabriolet and Tim talked about how much cars have changed since the 356 speedsters. Nowadays you have to have more computer knowledge than mechanical knowledge to work on almost all new cars. This can make it difficult for shops because most older Porsche techs are used to the older simpler cars. Another problem with this is a lot of knowledge about older cars is at a danger of getting lost as master technicians age and there are less young people wanting to work on old cars.
Near the end we got on to the subject of what gas to use in our cars. Seems like a simple enough topic but turns out to be more complicated. In Europe where our cars are made the gas is much higher quality. They also use a different octane scale to determine whether the gas is premium or regular. The main difference though is gas in most European countries has less than 5 percent ethanol. If you ever look at a gas pump in the US it will say less than 10 percent ethanol. Tim states that US gas could even have higher than 10 percent ethanol. So what does this mean? Basically when these older cars were designed they weren't using as much if any ethanol in fuels so now with 10 percent ethanol it destroys fuel systems and just shouldn’t be used in any older car. I just thought this was a useful bit of info if you’d ever wondered why we have to put non ethanol fuel in our older cars.
As we neared the end of the session Tim wanted to show us one last building where he keeps his personal projects. This was by far my favorite building. Tim had told me he was an avid sailor and that piqued my interest because always loved sailing and I have a sailboat. Now finally got to see his beautiful sailboat. And what a beautiful boat it was, I really liked the sleek lines and contoured hull shape. Tim showed us the propeller he had bought for the boat which I thought was really cool.
When under normal operation with the motor on it functioned as a normal propeller, when the motor was turned off the blades turned because of the water pressure producing very little drag. This also meant that the propeller would always be at the optimal blade pitch even in reverse. Overall a very cool design. On the other side of the room was Tim’s project car that he is restoring. What a surprise it's a 911. This car was also just incredible. Even in its unfinished form it looked great with the brand new red paint. Tim was about to put the engine and transmission in and can’t wait to see it on the road.
To wrap up this was definitely my favorite Tech Session so far. It was great to have so many members in attendance and fun to see all that’s going on in Tim’s shop. A big thanks to German Master Tech for hosting us and can’t wait for the next one! Hope to see you there!
Deschutes County SkidCar Training is an all-weather driver enhancement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners.
Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance. Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. Participants will also learn about skid prevention, control and recovery.

Earlier this month I got the chance to speak with one of our new member’s Jim Parlette. I visited him at his beautiful home in Brasada Ranch where he has 2 Porsches at the moment. We started chatting about how he got into cars and he explained that he has always been into cars. One of his first experiences with Porsche was when his uncle bought a 912E for 9,000 dollars. This started his love for the brand and his passion for cars.
Let's go on a journey through all of the cars that Jim has owned. Jim explained that at first he really liked BMW’s. He first bought a BMW z3 that he really liked the light sporty feel that they had. Continuing with the BMW train he upgraded to a M3 that he thought was an amazing car. Finally he bought a 2006 M5 that he felt was very fast and fun but the amenities just were sub par. He felt that the BMW interiors were just not up to the standard.
After the string of BMW’s Jim settled on a Mercedes 2012 E63 as his next car. He explained to me that this car was beautiful inside and out but it’s a Mercedes so it had many weird problems throughout his ownership of it. Finally he realized that he wanted a Porsche sports car.
Jim decided that the 911 convertible would be his Porsche of choice. Specifically a 997.2 without all of the issues of the earlier 997.1 cars. This is the car he has now, a beautiful red 997.2 Carrera 4s. He fell in love with the Carrera 4s after discovering how usable it could be as a daily driver.
That C63 he had he eventually traded for a Cayenne Turbo which he really liked the power that it had. His wife wanted to build a Cayenne S to her desired spec. They went to Porsche in Bend and they were just looking around. The salesman gave them a build sheet for a Cayenne that they had in stock. It got thrown in a corner never really looked at. Finally a few weeks later it was looked at and what a coincidence! It was the exact same car they had spec'd out online. They immediately went and bought it and have loved it ever since. One of the other cars
I had a great time talking with Jim about cars and his journey with Porsche. I look forward to seeing him at future events and encourage everyone in the club to say hi to our new members. All it takes is one conversation and you've got someone new to talk about cars with. Thanks again to Jim for the opportunity to interview. Look for Jim's red 911 Carrera 4s at the next club event!
