PRESIDENTSMESSAGE

president@highdesertpca.org

On July 26, HDR will celebrate its 25-year anniversary in conjunction with our new member picnic at Tracy Stout's Wildwood Ranch. This is the Club's most significant event of the year and will be a fully catered meal with live music, door prizes, and a special cake to celebrate the Club's anniversary. HDR is subsidizing the majority of the cost with members charged only a nominal fee as one of the "give back" benefits to our members.

We intend to invite, as our guests, founding members who are no longer Club members. I have many of our original members' names and email addresses, but in order not to overlook anyone, if you have any names and email contact information, please furnish that to me.

As I have related in previous messages, our Club originated from a small group of Porsche owners who had an informal club in Central Oregon. One member of the group, Fred Faria, kept pushing the group to form a new PCA Region in Central Oregon. Finally, after much pressure and nagging from Fred Faria, the group moved forward in establishing the High Desert PCA Region on April 29, 2000. We held our Charter Dinner in August 2000 with approximately 40 members attending. This was almost the entire Club membership. Since that time, we have grown to over 500 members and enjoy a wide range of car and social events.

This anniversary and new member picnic will be our Club's showcase event of this year and I hope to see all Club members attend the event and enjoy the festivities.

The first Arrive and Drive of the 2025 season and there were 40 Porsches and sunny skies that greeted us. We had three groups enjoying the warm morning and Porsche rated roads. D O W N S H I F T F E A T U R E D A R T I

The parking lot was full of Porsches waiting to drive!

There is all sorts of definitions of horse power!

The ride ended in the community of Post, the center of Oregon.

COWBOY DINNER TREE

We saddled up our rides and headed out for some real cowboy and cowgirl grub. Huge steaks and whole rotisserie chickens is just a part of the dinner menu. First we had two stops along the way.

It was a warm day and plenty of sunshine on our drive to our first two stops, Homstead Village and Fort Rock. There was no fort but a massive caldera formation.

Fort Rock, like a desert mirage, this National Natural Landmark rises huge out of the barren, immense flatness of Oregon's high desert. An enormous near-circle of towering jagged rock walls make it seem like a fort. Hike around and you'll soon realize it's even bigger than it looks! It's an old tuff ring set in what was a shallow sea in prehistoric times. Sandals found in a nearby cave are the oldest ever discovered, dating back around 9,350-10,500 years.

Is It possible that our steak dinner just crossed the road in front of of us?

The steak this visit was the most flavorful and tender we have ever enjoyed.

There were several new or recent HDR members that attended and we hope to see you at other events.

Four couples rented cottages for the night adjacent to the restaurant. These cozy rustic units looked like they belong in a fairytale movie.

RPCA TECH SESSION

NW Wheel & Tire

Tech Session Recap: Powder Coating at Northwest Wheel and Tire

On May 31st, a group of us gathered at Northwest Wheel and Tire in southeast Bend for a fascinating tech session focused on powder coating. I’ve always been curious about the process and how it works, so I was especially excited for this event.

As always, the parking lot didn’t disappoint — filled with incredible and unique cars. One standout was a beautifully restored Porsche 911 S. The car was already stunning, but the paint job truly elevated it. It looked like it had been detailed with the precision of a cake decorator an amazing vehicle, flawlessly executed.

Once we moved into the waiting area, Dave, the owner, shared the story of how he started his business back in 2007. His journey was both interesting and inspiring. He also mentioned that they are the only shop in town offering wheel repair services something I've always found intriguing, so it was great to learn that they do that inhouse.

We then took a tour of the facility, eventually arriving at the powder coating room. For anyone unfamiliar, powder coating is a method of applying a durable finish to metal parts. The process involves spraying a fine powder from a special gun. The metal part is electrically charged so the powder sticks to it. Then, the part is baked in an oven at around 400 degrees Fahrenheit, forming a thick, protective, and visually striking coating.

Dave walk e a live demo of on really brought t e most engaging tech sessions I’ve attended.

As a bonus, Dave even handed out free T-shirts to everyone. Between the cars, the learning, and the giveaways, what more could you ask for?

Huge thanks to Northwest Wheel and Tire for hosting us. If you haven’t been to a tech session yet, you’re missing out. There’s always something cool to see and learn hope to see you at the next one!

Bring A Trailer/Avant-Garde Collection Meet Up

Portland, June 8, 2025

Each morning I make my way downstairs, give dog Billie ten minutes of attention, brew a coffee, pour a glass of fresh OJ then open my laptop and immediately call up Bring A Trailer/Porsche for 30 or so minutes of pure interesting entertainment. The cars! The comments! The dollar figures! Many sellers on BaT are hopeful individuals trying to sell a car they have loved for years. Others, shameless flippers. And a small handful (with two fingers missing) of sellers whose BaT listings are simply outstanding. The photography. The knowledgeable descriptions of the cars and careful and measured responses to questions-inane and not. BaT has become a phenomenally successful platform for selling motor vehicles. And those few sellers who have learned to professionally present outstanding Porsches and other marques have my deepest respect.

Matt and Aimee Crandall, owners of Avant-Garde Collection lead the way in this lofty category. Matt, known by his BaT handle 911r, is a well-known and respected presence on BaT. His listings can be spotted immediately by distinctive photography, the driving videos and write ups. First class. Porsche worthy. Please stay with me here as I extract myself from the preamble…

A recent Sunday morning. Clear, warm skies. I am a passenger in an Audi A4 Allroad wagon. We are chasing four late model Porsches and a very rare BMW M2 up to Portland. At one point, I sneak a glance at the speedo and see three digits. Better to keep eyes on the awesome vehicles ahead. Mt Hood flashes by. Less than a mile from our destination, Avant-Garde Collection, we are halted in traffic. Porsches. Ferraris, British sports cars, unique looking right-hand drive Japanese cars, American muscle all vying for parking. This is the best traffic jam I've experienced. Once parked we can hardly make our way to the entrance because we are constantly stopping and gawking-“What’s that???”-at the wild variety of interesting cars everywhere. It is overwhelming. Thousands of people? Hundreds of cars? Or the reverse?

Avant-Garde Collection is a legend in the PNW and with a sister facility opened in Scottsdale in 2023, they have the West covered. Bring A Trailer is a worldwide wonder. BaT teams up with their superstar sellers like Avant-Garde Collection nationwide in these special Meet Ups. Inside and out of the 25,000 sq foot warehouse that stores Avant-Garde Collection’s soon to be sold vehicles, delicious pastries, water bottles, swag were all laid out for consumption and take home souvenirs. And did I mention there was no charge for the event or the swag? Our HDRPCA group made a small dent in the goodies, though as always, never being too greedy.

All this is good information for our readers but I had a serious goal in mind. To interview Matt Crandall. He and I have exchanged emails for four years trying to find a time to sit down and conduct a relaxed interview. So what was I doing trying to conduct an interview on surely one of the busiest days of his year? He did write in a pre-event email exchange to “track him down” for a chat and Porsche lovers, that is what I did. When I introduced myself, Matt greeted me with a wide, welcoming grin and handshake. He led me to a nearby office and we had a very nice, casual and relaxed conversation. So here, based on hastily written notes, is my best recreation of our 15 minutes. As I did not record it please do not take the conversation as verbatim. I will save that for a more formal interview with Matt in the future. A wee bit of the following info I gleaned from a Hagerty article.

Why 911r as Matt’s BaT handle? Matt once built a 911R tribute, designing and building most of the parts himself. For those who don't know the original (’67-’68) 911R is a true unicorn with approximately 20 cars built in total. Here is a link for those interested: https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/history/porsche-911-r-geneva-motorshow-racinghistory-12282.html

Early background: Matt has always been a car guy. Started buying and selling cars at 13. Until recent expansion to Arizona, always made his home in Oregon. Worked at Ferrari and Ducati dealerships. Learned that proper presale prep and quality presentation were keys to success in the car biz.

Why open up a facility in Scottsdale? The Southwest and especially the Valley of the Sun are host to great car cultures. Avant-Garde Collection has a large Phoenix client base and to better to serve existing and future customers opened up facility number two. Each operation has about 15 employees offering consignment, dry ice detailing, mechanical and body work in addition to prepping vehicles for 911r sales on the BaT platform.

His favorite Porsche? The mid-engine 2005 Carrera GT. A mechanical and design wonder with a V-10 power plant.

I thanked Matt for his time and scooted out into the hot Portland day to meet up with HDRPCA crew. All of this before 11 AM! I love days like this. However, much more to come as we drove across the wide, beautiful Colombia River and on north of Camus to be treated by HDRPCA members Amity and Eric Peterson to a tour of their garage and very special cars. I use the term ‘garage’ here loosely of course. It was a wonder for a garageologist and shop aficionado like myself. A special way to conclude the first half of the day and after tacos at a nearby eatery, we hightailed back to the high desert of Central Oregon.

SkidCar Training

Deschutes County SkidCar Training is an all-weather driver enhancement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners.

Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance. Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. Participants will also learn about skid prevention, control and recovery.
