The Staff's Winter Fails! Wr it t en by: Th e St af f of t h e R5 Fam ily M agazin e My winter fail I don't quite remember that much, but I do remember that it was quite funny at the time. One day a few years ago, I went sledding in town with my mom and sister. I went down the hill a few times with my sister and we weren't very good at steering, but this time was horrible! As we went down we started turning into some brush/ dead plants sticking up through the snow and I could tell that if we didn't turn we'd be going straight through them, and that's exactly what happened. We sled right through the bunch of sticks and twigs and I was surprised that our faces didn't get scratched at all. I think afterward we purposely wiped out, so we didn't go through any more of the brush. It was pretty funny, but I remember wondering if my sister was okay, plus being really surprised that we didn't get hurt. All was good after it happened and I think we know to steer clear of those plants for a while. ~ Jennifer

I live somewhere that it doesn?t snow very often. It only snows every few years and even then it usually doesn?t stick to the ground. But last December, we had a lot of snow (comparatively) and we woke up to a white blanket of snow on a Friday morning. Sadly, we did have to go to school but once we got there, everyone was outside throwing snowballs at each and playing in the snow. My friend and I knew it probably wasn?t a good idea to go out in the snow since there were only a few minutes until the 1st period bell, so we went inside. As soon as we walked in, we heard one of our Assistant Principals on the speaker telling us, ?Wildcats! Go outside and play in the snow!? So my friend and I, and the majority of the school, all run outside and play in the snow. It was a great time and I?m so happy we got to spend even just a few minutes in the snow before sitting inside all day and watching it melt away. -Ashley

I live in the midwest, I was born and raised here, so it is not uncommon to see snowflakes falling from the sky. Another thing about me is that I am not the most graceful person, I could be walking and suddenly hit the ground. My brother has raced snowmobiles since he was 10 years old, he is 21 now, and has always kept it a really family oriented sport. His ?team?basically consists of him, my dad, a family friend, and myself, every weekend we are in a different part of the upper midwest ?chasing the checkers,? as my dad likes to call it. Sometimes my brother races on ice, so you can about imagine just how many guys are falling if they run, or even walk, too fast. One year at one of the races I wasn?t feeling the best so I decided to go lay down in the truck and try to take a nap, I fell asleep and stayed there for a couple hours. By the time I woke up, the races were done for the day and everybody was clearing out of the pits area. I had turned my phone off to save the battery since I wasn?t going to be using it anyways so I didn?t get the text from my dad telling me that they were in a friend?s trailer instead of our own. Not knowing the crucial information, I got up, still half asleep, and tried to walk over to the trailer. The weekend was warmer so the ice underneath us was starting to melt causing puddles to be frequent throughout the pits area. As I was walking over to the trailer I slipped on the ice and landed right in the middle of a puddle, the water splashed up around me, covering my whole entire body in dirty, cold, water. I got back up and walked shamefully back to the truck where I got a towel and tried to dry off. Thankfully, I was able to convince myself that nobody saw me and my snow fail. -Leanne

I live in Nebraska and when I was little we always had some amazing snow days. One snow I remember very well because it was probably the most funny moment of my childhood. When I was around five or six I went outside to play in the white puffy snow in the front yard with my siblings. When I tried to walk in the snow I kept falling down because I did not know how to walk with a bunch of layers on my body. I was stiff as a board throughout my time outside that my twin brother thought it would be funny to actually push down. Out of all of the moments I have fallen in the snow I could always get back up, but not this time. I was stuck face first in the white powder for what felt like a long time. I asked my mom and she said it was only for about at least a couple of seconds until she rushed over to pick me up. All I can say was that my face was cold, I was crying and I still give my brother a hard time about almost "killing me" that day. -Elise
