WSU opens campus in Komani REPORTER

ALTER Sisulu University’s (WSU) new, fully-fledged campus in Komani hosted its first parents and students’ academic opening last Saturday.

The event was held to welcome and introduce its students to the campus and staff and to show them the residences.

The Komani campus, which is housed in the

historical academic buildings of the former Masibulele College of Education, has grown to a fully-fledged campus with a number of academics who hold doctoral degrees.

Professor McGlory Speckman is the newly appointed campus rector.

Saturday’s event was attended by Enoch Mgijima Municipality mayor Lindiwe GunuzaNkwentsha, local business people, pastors and retired WSU staff.

The event consisted of an academic proces-

sion followed by motivational speeches from campus management, academics and local prominent people to encourage the new students to take their studies seriously.

This campus is offering part-time programmes such as BTech degrees in Human Resources Management, Public Management and Internal Auditing.

Dr Daphne Gumbi, Dean for Education Finance and Management, motivated and encouraged parents to be involved in their children’s

lives.

“Take note of the small things, such as parents accompanying their children through the registration process; seeing where your child will spend most of the year. That is love – and more so, that is instilling responsibility in a future parent,” said Gumbi.

During his speech campus rector Speckman told the parents that the day is the beginning of a partnership with you the parents.

Mayor Lindiwe Gunuza-Nkwentsha said that one of the reasons the municipality decided to be in this partnership with the university is the prospects on skills development which will lead to development in the area.

Acting municipal manager’s resignation submitted to council TEMBILE SGQOLANA ENOCH Mgijima Municipality executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza-Nkwentsha presented the resignation of the local authority’s acting municipal manager, Nolwandle Gqiba, and acting director of technical services, Mvuyisi Nofemele, during a special council meeting on Wednesday.

Nkwentsha said the notification, dated January 12, 2017, was received from Gqiba

through her legal representative with effect from January 13, 2017.

“She has since taken up a position in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. Subsequent to the receipt of the resignation I appointed Similo Day to act as the municipal manager,” he said.

Nkwentsha said the position of the municipal manager has been advertised and the closing date was January 20, 2017.

“Nofemele has taken a position at the Department of Cooperative Governance and

Traditional Affairs. It is recommended that his position be advertised and a suitable person to act in the position of director of technical services until the vacancy is filled,” she said.

Councillors questioned Nkwentsha’s right to appoint an acting municipal manager.

In a letter from Brin Brody of Wheeldon, Rushmere and Cole Inc on behalf of Gqiba, the lawyers indicate that there was a letter on December 15, 2016, from the municipality indicating that Gqiba’s position is not secured

and the position has been advertised.

“Our client is a little surprised that your municipality has seen fit to indicate in its letter that it intends appointing a new municipal manager by March 2017 when present contract of employment indicates that she is employed until the end of June 2017,” said Brody.

Brody said in the letter his client (Gqiba) “indicates that she will resign with immediate effect arising out of your letter and the manner in which she has been treated in regard to this appointment.”

The police officers were arrested on January 31 after they were investigated by the provincial South African Police Service corruption unit.

The charges against Siyanda Gunuza (37), Dalithemba Maheshana (46), Monwabisi Dyongo (49), Andiswa Jikumlambo (40), Sipho Nene (34), Mzimkhulu Ndevu (39) and Makgotso Kesa (45) relates to taking bribes in relation to or in exchange for drugs.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the arrest.

“The arrest should send a very strong message to all members and employees of the SAPS. As custodians of the law and order we will not

hesitate to arrest our own members or employees when they involve themselves in any form of criminality.

“This is not the last operation; many more will be seen in the near future and arrests are imminent. We will not tolerate corrupt activities by any member or employee,” she said.

Maheshana, a member of the flying squad, and Nene were granted R500 bail on their first appearance last week and are expected to appear again on February 28.

According to the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Sizwe Konzi, the unit received information about members of the Komani flying squad which conducts road blocks on the R61 and N6 Roads near Komani. “These officers arranged with the drug dealers to transport them for a fee. Members of the flying squad provided transport for the drug dealers,” he said.

Konzi said after receiving the information, their officers went undercover posing as drug dealers and met with the suspects to arrange for transportation.

“An agent was sent and the police officers transported the agent. Everything was captured in video and audio recordings. They drove in a marked police vehicle and were paid R2 500 for the job,” he said.

In his affidavit opposing bail for Gunuza and Maheshana, Konzi said Gunuza is facing three counts of corruption, three counts of defeating the ends of justice and racketeering.

“These are serious charges and if the accused is found guilty, he can spend a lengthy jail time and that may be a reason why he may evade trial,” he said.

Konzi added that the case has shocked the community as the people involved are police officers.

“If they are released on bail, it will seem as if we are protecting them as they are members of the SAPS,” he said.

The bail application of the accused is still continuing.

At time of print a ruling on the bail application had not yet been made.

More complaints on ward committee elections TEMBILE SGQOLANA RESIDENTS of Ward 15 in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality have lodged a dispute over the election of ward committees in their ward.

In a letter sent to the office of the acting municipal manager Similo Dayi, the residents said they feel that the process was not fair enough because the meeting was only loud hailed on January 22, 2017 at 9:54am.

“We feel that it was supposed to be 48

hours’ notice, we also feel that the speaker, Mzoxolo Peter, was biased because he allowed people who were not residing in that ward to be elected,” said the letter.

Lucas Komeni, one of the signatories of the letter, said some candidates were not on the voter’s roll of the ward and appeared in ward 14 but they were allowed to be nominated.

“We feel that Neighbourhood Watch should have not been allowed to nominate more than four nominees. Peter dismissed that in other wards, but allowed it in ward

15,” he said.

Another signatory of the letter, Buzani Gcinisa, said the speaker was not consistent in announcing the results of the candidates.

“The process was not free and fair to everyone who participated. There was a lot of intimidation by Neighbourhood Watch and we are not happy with the results as we feel they are not a true reflection of what happened in the meeting,” he said.

Local men in blue uniform recognised nationally YOLANDA DAMANE THE Whittlesea Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigation Unit shone at the national South African Police Services meeting held in Pretoria last month.

The Whittlesea unit was recognised as the best performing unit in South Africa when it came to detaining and convicting criminals.

The team, consisting of eleven members, covers the Ntabethemba, Thornhill, Whittlesea and Cathcart areas.

Among their many successes, are a decrease in the number of pending cases and long prison sentences for offenders they investigated.

In December last year, two of the cases they attended to resulted in suspects being sentenced to life imprisonment.

One of the latest cases involved a man (45) who first raped the victim in 2011 when she was only 7 years old.

While on trial in 2014, he again raped her and was sentenced to two lifetimes in jail.

Another rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment for house robbery and raping a boy (14).

Police Communications Liaison in the Queenstown District, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, attributed the success to the strong will and hard work of the team.

“Their decreased rate of pending cases is due to the unity they have. Also they try by all means to arrest, investigate thoroughly and sentence perpetrators.

“They also work hard to see that bail is refused while they (suspects) are on trial,” Captain Mdleleni said.

Capt. Mdleleni said that members with successes will be commended and be handed achievement certificates.

Nontsikelelo Matiso of the Sada location in Whittlesea said she has been living in a bad situation for years as she is struggling to keep the water out of her house when it rains.

“The storm water drains direct the water straight into our homes. For me it’s a challenge as I stay with a disabled grandchild. I even lost all my furniture due to this situation,” she said.

Matiso pleaded with the municipality or any business people to assist her in building a temporary structure that will allow them to move out of the dilapidated house.

“I was happy when the mayor arrived and promised to follow up on the registration of temporary houses,” she said.

DA councillor, Malibongwe Xhelisilo, said it is painful to learn that the elderly woman was not visited in the floods that have hit Whittlesea.

“She claims that her local leaders have never seen her situation as they are running away.

“I called the mayor to come and see the situation of the woman herself. She even saw the poor planning as there is no place to direct the water from this area,” he said.

He said water should be channelled and collected as the area has a huge water shortage.

“A caring government will make sure that this elderly woman and her grandchild are taken care of. I want to thank Nkwentsha for visiting and bringing hope,” he said.

Xhelisilo said Nkwentsha is the only mayor who took the time to visit the area.

“I want to thank the mayor for her commitment and I hope that she will do the same to other families,” he said.

Military veterans to take action against illegal occupants TEMBILE SGQOLANA

“I registered for a house and my name was approved. We waited for the handover up until some members of the South African National Military Veterans Association (SANMVA) forcefully took houses which do not belong to them. These criminals have taken over our houses and if the government is failing to sort this out, we will be forced to remove them ourselves,” he said.

Mbengo said he went to the Department of Human Settlements to investigate.

“I found out my application was approved and my house was already built.

When I arrived at the house there was a family occupying my house. I asked the people and they said they were told to occupy the houses by SANMVA,” he said.

He said he met with SANMVA’s chairperson, Sipho Ngwetsheni, and told him that those houses do not belong to them.

“Ngwetsheni seems to be arrogant and all this confusion is done by the SANMVA leadership. This country is ruled by laws and no one can do as he likes,” he said.

Mbengo alleges that some of the houses have been occupied by teachers, nurses and people who were never military veterans.

In response Ngwetsheni said the decision to occupy the houses was made by all military veteran organisations led by

Premier to present State of Province Address next week REPORTER

The MECs are expected to report back to the Committees with explanations and remedial plans within 30 days.

The reports verbally presented before members of the legislature consisted of the objectives of each department and entity, findings and recommendations.

The sittings kick-started with the report on the Office of the Premier followed by that of the Legislature and other government departments.

According to the reports, the Provincial Government has failed to meet the 50% representation of women at senior management positions and only achieved 40%.

The Speaker of the Legislature, Noxolo Kiviet (MPL), will preside over this Sitting scheduled to take place from 9am on Friday, February 17, at the Legislature precincts in Bhisho.

This Sitting provides a platform for the Premier to outline the provincial government’s programme of action in the year ahead, priorities for the ensuing financial year, challenges faced during the past year, achievements and developmental projects for the 2017/18 financial year.

Understaffing crippling EC Department of Health, hears Provincial Legislature MEMBERS of the Provincial Legislature of opposition parties aired the unhealthy state of affairs at the Eastern Cape’s Department of Health during the presentation of annual reports at the Provincial Legislature in Bhisho last week with the issue of understaffing being at the centre of the issue.

Celeste Barker who is the Democratic Alliance’s Shadow MEC for Health, described the Eastern Cape Department of Health as a disgrace.

Barker who was part of the members who conducted oversight visits at the EDoH, said the department’s Call Centre was dysfunctional – something which she said affected the provision of health services.

“The Department of Health’s performance is embarrassing. In a detailed report you will see that the findings are repetitive and the department has been operating without a formal organogram and organisational structures remain centralised. And in spite of the high need for health services, the department has underspent its budget by R7 million,” said Barker.

Barker added that she was perplexed to realise that some of the crucial positions in the department were run by interns without proper supervision.

The United Democratic Movement’s Maxwell Mhlati told the house that during their visits they learnt that in some hospitals admitted patients wore their clothes and some went to sleep with empty stomachs.

Mhlathi said the head of the Department of Health needed to explain the issue of the delayed presentation of the organogram and the understaffing of health facilities.

He said the shortage of staff in some hospitals cost the department a lot of money in legal claims where patients had been given wrong medication or treated improperly.

“And if we do not provide supervisors I assure you the matter will escalate. Also, the MEC needs to explain why there

In the second week of January this year, nursing graduates protested at the Department of Health’s offices demanding jobs that they said they were promised by the department upon completion of their training.

Some of the graduates had graduated in 2011 and said they had been serving as interns since then, despite the fact that there is a reported shortage of nurses.

Kean Sharpley of the Congress of the People recommended that the department absorbs all the volunteers who have been serving in various health institutions to help mitigate the understaffing.

The African National Congress’s Mpumelelo Saziwa concurred with Mhlati saying the Department of Health had created a ground for legal firms to milk it through claims.

He, however, said the shortage of doctors in the rural hospitals was attributable to the fraudulent actions in the process of application for the training of doctors in Cuba.

“Doctors get into the Cuban doctor training programme fraudulently. The programme targets the applicants from the rural areas – people who will not have a problem when they are deployed in a rural hospital.

“But what we are experiencing now is that the doctors refuse to serve in those areas because they are not from there or they are not from disadvantaged settings so the environment is completely new to them. And they refuse to be placed in the rural hospitals,” he said.

MEC for Health, Patricia Dyantyi, said the controversial organogram had been submitted to the Office of the Premier for validation and approval.

Dyantyi is expected to report back to the house in 30 days on how her department is going to address the issues raised in the report.

Social development The Provincial Government together with the Department of Social Development have failed to meet the targets of employment of people with disabilities with the Provincial Government recording 1.6% while the Department of Social Development employment equity rate for people with disabilities still remains at 1.2%.

The report highlighted that some of the entities funded by the Department of Social Development are unable to produce audited financial statements –something which makes it difficult to ascertain whether monies transferred to the entities were indeed utilised for the intended purposes.

Among the many issues that the MEC for Social Development, Nancy Sihlwayi, is expected to answer for, is the approved organisational structure that has 16 206 posts, an increase of 354.6% from the old structure which had 4 569 positions. Other issues are the vacancy rate that stands at 711% and a case of fifteen officials who have have failed to disclose business interests and being involved in conducting business with the government.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs continues to be marred by tensions between the management and labour as illustrated by the numerous grievances that have been lodged in the financial year under review. According to the Portfolio Committee, the situation affects effective service delivery. Also during the year under review the department is said to have displayed poor record keeping.

Rural Development and Agrarian Reform In a time where the country’s food security is under severe threat due to drought and the dwindling number of emerging black farmers, Mlibo Qoboshiyane’s Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform was found guilty of not providing sufficient support to farmers and the findings were evident through the lack of progression of emerging farmers to commercial farming, recurrence of under expenditure and the little visibility of the veterinary surgeons in rural areas to provide assistance in animal health, resulting in livestock dying in huge numbers.

It was recommended that the department must strengthen educative programmes to empower farmers about all the processes that directly affect farming.

The department is expected to report to the committee on how it is going to address the highlighted issues within 30 days as from January 31.

Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture The Portfolio Committee on the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture highlighted, among many, a worrying phenomenon of irregular and under-expenditure by the department. The committee demanded that it be furnished with a clear turnaround plan to avert irregular and under-expenditure by the department.

Safety and Liaison The MEC for Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana, was also a culprit of under-expenditure and a perpetual systems glitch that causes salary overpayments and double disbursement to service providers.

The department was further advised to recover the monies unduly paid to a former employee and service providers. In the 2015-16 financial year the Department of Safety and Liaison is said to have erroneously made a salary overpayment to a former employee and a double disbursement to a service provider.

Economic Development, Environmental Af­ fairs and Tourism The report of the Portfolio Committee on the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism revealed that the department overspent its budget by R4 430 000 due to payments to Coega Development Corporation (CDC) for its 2014/15 infrastructure projects. The department experienced irregular expenditure valued at R168 million, with R150.8 million incurred by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) infrastructure projects administered by the Coega Development Corporation (CDC).

The department’s entity COEGA Development Corporation (CDC) with Agni Steel, a steel manufacturer situated at Coega, is reported to be in contravention of the Labour Relations Act and conducts its business in a manner that puts workers’ lives at risk.

General findings on the department revealed that the department’s continued efforts in engaging the Department of Trade and Industry (the DTI) have been slow to unfold regulatory and funding processes related to Special Economic Zones’ (SEZ) migration and the result is continued funding pressures for Coega Development Corporation (CDC) and the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ). The report also underlined a growing perception that the CDC and ELIDZ are in competition for investors, saying the perception is fuelled by investors playing the two provincial SEZs off against each other.

Recommendations were that the Provincial Government steps in to resolve the matter.

Treasury The Provincial Treasury was found guilty of under-expenditure and was advised to report within 30 days on how it will avoid underexpenditure as it has been continuing for the past seven years.

Queenstown Girls’ High School’s Top 6 Squash team participated in the recent much-anticipated Dave Hodgson Squash Tournament in Grahamstown. Anje Strydom, a Grade 8 learner at Queenstown Girls’ High School, competed at the South African Judo National Ranking in Bloemfontein.

Hangklip learners show their school spirit in athletics events

Twenty learners from Hangklip Primary School, ranging from u/9 to u/13, participated in the Queen’s Junior C-League swim gala event on January 31. The items included 25m sign head, 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke and both breaststroke and freestyle relay. The learners were very excited and completed their items with enthusiasm.

Grade 4 learners to be vaccinated against cervical cancer YOLANDA DAMANE THE Enoch Mgijima Department of Health has set a target to administer the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to as many as 10 211 Grade 4 girls during a vaccination campaign that will be held from this month to the end of March.

The government introduced the HPV vaccine in 2014 for girls in Grade 4 due to the increased number of women that are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Since then, the campaign is conducted on a yearly basis.

This year, the Department of Health will be working closely with the Department of Education and they will conjoin the two vaccination drives.

Children from Grades R to 7 will be given deworming medication and

Grade 4 girls from the age of nine will be given the HPV injection.

The HPV vaccinations are aimed at preventing cervical cancer. It requires two doses that are administered six months apart.

The HPV vaccine cannot prevent or treat HIV and it is not a method of family planning. The vaccine does not affect the ability to conceive in the future.

As the HPV vaccine is still new, it is not yet available in public clinics.

Therefore, the Department of Health is urging parents to sign the consent forms that will permit the Department to deliver the service to their children.

“The most crucial part in this campaign is for parents to sign the consent forms. This makes the process easier for the teachers and our

nurses,” Health Promotion Manager Mandisa Sitonga said.

A total of 9 168 girls were expected to be vaccinated in 2016, but due to parents being unaware of the campaign, only 7 505 were vaccinated in the district.

“These kids are not yet sexually active. We will only see the results when they are older.

“Parents should take note that it is important to permit their children because once they are vaccinated, they will remain protected against cervical cancer when they are older and will not need other vaccines later in life,” she added.

The Department of Health is encouraging parents to make sure that they sign the consent form for their children to be vaccinated and that they are at school on the scheduled dates.

The winner of this prestigious competition gets to go to New York to compete for $1million.

Speaking about the show that was aired on Msanzi Magic, Rani said he learnt to pitch his business idea within 30 seconds.

“I discovered how intimidating it can be to pitch in front of live cameras. I stutter and tend to speak very fast. I had to learn to be calm and confident while delivering a clear pitch,” said Rani, who calls himself a visionary entrepreneur.

Rani was born in Komani and now lives in the Western Cape.

According to Rani, he is a graduate at the University of Cape Town’s School of Business and has a B Tech in Business Administration studies and a B Tech degree in Commercial Education and Economics.

Koesisters: a sweet and spicy version of doughnuts CAPE Malay koesisters are a sweet and spicy version of doughnuts.

Koesisters are traditionally served on a Sunday morning for breakfast.

Makes about 60 koesisters

Ingredients: 1 kg cake flour 3 tsp dry ginger powder 4 tsp cinnamon powder 2 tsp cardamom powder 4 tsp aniseed powder Rind of 1 naartjie / satsuma, dried and ground (optional) 10g packet instant yeast 1 cup sugar 2 cups hot water 2 dessert spoons butter Milk as needed (about 2 cups) 1l or more vegetable oil for deep frying Method: .Using a measuring jug, melt the butter and sugar in hot water . Add enough milk to make 1 litre . Mix the flour, spices and yeast into a mixing bowl . Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients and mix to a soft dough . Set the dough aside, covered, to rise until it doubles in size . Dip your fingers in a little oil, just to prevent the dough from sticking to your fingers. . Divide the dough into approximately 60 small balls on a slightly oiled surface . Allow the koesisters to rise until they double in size . Meanwhile, heat oil in a large saucepan. . Once the oil is very hot, turn your stove down to medium-to-high . Gently pull the koesisters into oblong shapes and fry each side until browned, about 2 minutes on each side . Drain the oil on absorbent paper Sugar syrup: 2 cups water 2 cups sugar 3 cardamoms

2 sticks cinnamon Method: . Boil everything together until the sugar is dissolved and the syrup is slightly thickened and sticky . Add the cardamom and cinnamon for extra flavour . Add drops of water if the syrup becomes too sticky . Add the cooled koesisters into the syrup a few at a time . Cook for a minute or so, turning the koesisters all the time so the whole koesister is coated with sugar syrup . Remove from the syrup onto a serving plate . Sprinkle with desiccated coconut or make a slit in the middle of the koesister, taking care not to go right through . Drop a teaspoonful of glazed coconut in the centre Cook’s tip: Wash and dry the naartjie rind. Leave it out in the sun to dry out or, if there’s no sunshine, leave it in the oven on a very low temperature to dry out completely before grinding in a spice grinder.

To make the coconut filling 1 cup sugar 1 cup desiccated coconut ¾ cup water 3 cardamom pods 1 piece stick cinnamon Method: . Boil all the ingredients together until all the water is evaporated and the coconut is glazed and sticky. This will take about 10 minutes . Be careful not to burn it as coconut burns very easily . The coconut mixture should be dry, not watery . Remove the cardamoms and stick cinnamon before using.

From the moment you find out you are expecting a little bundle of joy, you need to make numerous life changing decisions even before the big arrival.

Choices need to be made; everything from what colour to make the baby’s room, to who will take care of your baby once/if you return to work and, of course, one of the most important decisions – choosing a name.

However, despite all these important choices you need to consider, often it is the moments in between that really count, such as your health and lifestyle choices, which could directly affect your unborn child.

If you have been taking your health for granted, then now is the time to assess your current lifestyle to see if any changes must be made.

Your unborn baby will rely on you for all essential nutrients, which are important for his/her development and by eating well, exercising and taking your prenatal vitamins you can decrease your risk of a complicated pregnancy.

It is for this reason, that as an expectant mom, you should prioritise your health and looking at an exercise and eating plan can go a long way here.

The importance of exercising How long can I jog? Am I able to lift weights? These are some of the questions that a lot of pregnant women are unsure of when it comes to exercise.

Many expectant moms want to jump in and exercise to ensure to keep the extra weight off, but sometimes it’s not a good idea to start something your body is not used to.

Despite all the myths surrounding exercising during pregnancy, health practitioners encourage moderate exercise, as it is highly beneficial for both the mom and growing baby.

So, how will exercise benefit you and baby?

It will: . Increase your energy levels . Improve sleep . Strengthen muscles and build endurance . Reduce backaches . Relieve constipation Eating right for yourself and the baby There will always be contradicting ideas from friends and family on what an expectant mother should eat or drink. However, it is always important to do personal research and get advice from your doctor or clinic.

Of course, there are certain foods that should be completely avoided by a pregnant mother, like raw meat and uncooked seafood.

Ideally, expectant moms should aim to eat foods that are high in calcium, antioxidants and nutrients as regularly as possible.

Before you get carried away and utter the words “I’m eating for two”, remember that eating too many calories is also harmful to you and the baby. You might even struggle to lose the post pregnancy weight, which can leave you frustrated.

In terms of the food you eat, make sure you get enough: . Vitamin D – which helps with the absorp-

tion of calcium . Iron - is vital for creating the baby’s blood supply . Vitamin C - improves the uptake of iron from non-meat sources . Omega 3 fats - are important to ensure optimal brain development of the baby . Calcium – which helps developing the baby’s bones and teeth Antenatal visits and appointments As soon as you find out that you are pregnant, schedule appointments with a reputable gynaecologist/midwife who can help you plan your antenatal care.

This will ensure that you are getting the right advice for a healthy pregnancy right from the getgo. Antenatal care is an essential part of pregnancy and on days where you are tempted to skip your appointment and rather relax on the couch, remember that sticking to appointments is essential in assessing your unborn baby’s health, and to examine whether the pregnancy is progressing well.

The absolute best part of an antenatal visit is hearing the heartbeat and getting a visual ‘sneak peek’ of your growing little one during an ultrasound.

during pregnancy, but with moderate exercise, plenty of sleep, healthy eating and making use of your support system, you can help ensure that your pregnancy is healthy and that you give your baby the healthiest start.

10 New Volvo S90 makes South African debut Motoring

THE new Volvo S90 is now available in South Africa.

Making its local debut as the second brandnew Volvo since the company began its ‘New Dawn’ renaissance with the local launch of the all-new XC90 in 2015, the new Volvo S90 is a continuation of the new look, new feel and new luxury Volvo brand in South Africa.

Marking Volvo’s return to the large executive sedan segment, the new S90 offers unprecedented Swedish luxury, supreme comfort and space, modern Scandinavian design, Drive-E efficiency and semi-autonomous driving as standard on all models.

The new S90, like the XC90, is built on Volvo Cars’ new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and features a mixed offering of petrol and diesel engines, and is available in three trim levels to cater for a wide audience while also offering a broad spectrum of value and Swedish luxury.

The new Volvo S90 will launch in South Africa initially with two engines – the D5 and T6, both with all-wheel drive – in Momentum or Inscription guise.

Later in 2017, the D4 and T5 derivatives will follow, with front-wheel drive, and the rangetopping T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will make its way to South Africa at a later date.

Greg Maruszewski, MD of Volvo Car South Africa, elaborated, “With the new Volvo S90 we are again bringing a new level of luxury to South African motorists. Naturally, it builds on the global successes of the XC90, which has collected over 120 awards to date, including the 2016 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year title in South Africa. Sensus Connect Like the XC90, the new S90 features minimal arrays of buttons, especially on the dashboard. The 9-inch high definition Sensus Connect interface is responsible for most in-car functions, from entertainment and telephony to settings, climate control and navigation.

Designed around the same principles as today’s leading smart devices, the tablet-style interface with its portrait orientation is easy to use, responsive (even while wearing gloves) and intuitive, with tap, pinch and swipe gesture controls and customisable shortcuts, giving the driver quick and easy access to their preferred vehicle functions.

Semi­autonomous as standard Dramatically increasing the inherent value of all S90 derivatives – and moving one step closer towards fully-autonomous cars – is the fact that all S90 derivatives are semi-autonomous up to 130km/h as standard. Working hand-in-hand, Adaptive Cruise Control and Pilot Assist enhance the S90’s driveability and allow drivers to hand over control to the car in varying degrees of engagement.

Available with a toggle option to conventional cruise control, should the driver prefer not to enjoy the benefits of an adaptive system, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses radar and a camera to manage the S90’s speed in relation to the car in front, when applicable and up to 200km/h. The system reacts readily to changing conditions, and is capable of bringing the S90 to a complete stop.

As an extension of ACC, new-generation Pilot Assist, which has been available in South Africa in the XC90 since late 2016 already,

The exterior of the new Volvo S90. takes things a step further. Activated manually, the driver can also allow the S90 to control steering input at speeds up to 130km/h, provided there are clear lane markings on both sides of the car. This ‘driver in the loop’ system is provided as an outright assistance feature and requires the driver to keep at least one hand on the wheel and maintain focus on the road at all times – but with its gentle steering inputs allows the driver to relax behind the wheel to a large extent.

It is important to note that semi-autonomous systems are restricted by how much acceleration, braking and steering force they may apply, and that the driver is always legally responsible for driving the vehicle. The driver can at any time override Pilot Assist by applying the brakes, applying steering force or switching back to ACC. Pilot Assist comes in particularly handy on the daily commute and especially when stuck in a traffic jam.

Safety equipment As can be expected, the new S90 picks up on the high precedent set by the XC90 and as such features all of Volvo’s latest safety systems as standard. This naturally includes ABS, EBD, EBA, stability and traction control, hill start assistance and six airbags, and Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS).

Volvo’s patented safety cage is also employed in the S90’s body construction, with high-tensile Boron steel (35%) and a mix of other metals ensuring that the passenger compartment remains intact and that other parts of the car can absorb energy effectively, in the event of a collision.

Coincidentally timed with the launch of S90 in South Africa, Euro NCAP announced on 25 January that the new S90 achieved the

expected 5-star safety rating, as well as fullmarks for autonomous emergency braking for pedestrians (Pedestrian AEB). Valid as well for the S90’s estate sibling, the V90, this means that the top three best-ever safety ratings achieved at Euro NCAP belong to Volvo cars – naturally including the XC90 which raised the bar in 2015.

A number of supplementary “IntelliSafe” safety systems are also on hand as standard to assist in preventing accidents, or at least minimising the potential for damage and injury should a crash be unavoidable.

TransUnion VPI shows further increase in SA vehicle prices, decline in new vehicle sales REPORTER THE percentage at which new and used vehicle prices increased in 2016 is more than double compared to that of the same period in 2015, according to the latest TransUnion SA Vehicle Pricing Index (VPI).

The Q4 2016 VPI found that the rate of new and used vehicle pricing increased to 9.4% and 3.3% in Q4 2016 from 4.6% and 1.6% in Q4 2015 respectively, suggesting that the trend for purchasing used vehicles is still on the rise.

The VPI index measures the relationship between the increase in vehicle pricing for new and used vehicles from a basket of passenger vehicles which incorporates 15 top volume manufacturers. Vehicle sales data collated from across the industry was used to create the index.

These figures show that the increase in new vehicle pricing has exceeded CPI by an average of 3% for the last three quarters, which has led to an increase in demand for used vehicles. This is supported by statistics shown by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of

South Africa (Naamsa), which indicates a quarter-on-quarter decline of 12% in the sale of new passenger vehicles and a decline of 9% of new light commercial vehicles from Q4 2015 to Q4 2016.

“The 2% decline in growth of GDP year-onyear compounds the pressure put on vehicle manufacturers to increase their prices, which is adding to the financial strain felt by many households across the country that are in the market for a vehicle,” said Derick de Vries, CEO of Auto Information Solutions at TransUnion.

“The wake of a volatile economic climate has domestic vehicle consumers continuing to prefer to hold on to existing vehicles or purchase used vehicles rather than buy a new car.

“Consumers are financing cheaper new vehicles or more expensive used vehicles, and the used-to-new ratio shows that finance houses are financing 2.5 used vehicles for every one new vehicle,” said De Vries. “Yet the percentage of cars, new and used, financed below R200 000 appears to have remained constant from the last quarter which indicates that this trend will follow in the next year.”

The average monthly repayments have in-

creased from R4 656 to R4 910 year-on-year. This further emphasises that consumers are feeling the strain and are purchasing cheaper vehicles.

The volume of deals financed for Q4 2016 decreased by 25% on new vehicles and increased by 8% on used vehicles.

A constant increase in used car loans for values in the region of R190 000 is indicated, which highlights a shifting emphasis on the value proposition that consumers place on their vehicles, as they look for the maximum amount of value from a car.

Aggregated new vehicle sales figures from the Naamsa have shown an annual decline of 12.4% in the passenger market, an 8.9% decline in Light Commercial vehicles and an overall decline of 11.4% in the auto industry.

Additional TransUnion data shows that while the higher pricing for new vehicles has stimulated the demand for used vehicles, manufacturers are responding to the decline in new vehicle sales with decreased margins and increased marketing incentives in order to boost sales and reduce the delay of potential customers entering the buying cycle.

According to De Vries, Volkswagen is contin-

uing to outperform other manufacturers and is holding strong in their position as the leader in both new and used financed vehicle sales. Toyota has followed, capturing more than 20% of the new car market, with Ford following closely behind.

In the used vehicle market, Volkswagen, Toyota and Ford are also the top performers, yet Hyundai and BMW are closely nudging in, too.

“We see the new car market stabilizing in 2017 with no further contraction. Overall vehicle-related industries need to be aware of the supply and demand factors within both new and used cars. Consumer demand has been shifting towards used vehicles due to higher than CPI new vehicle price increases.

“However, as the supply of good quality used stock diminishes, this will cause a natural shift back to the new car market. Manufacturers and dealers will need to adopt new marketing methods in order to remain competitive.

“We see the industry partnering with credible players that can drive these efforts through big data and advanced analytics that can identify the right customer at the right time,” concluded De Vries.

Nissan launches new next generation Navara QUEENSTOWN Nissan will today be unveiling the brand-new next generation Nissan Navara at their showroom.

Ecclestone replaced: The end of a Formula 1 era IT seems somewhat surreal to imagine that Bernie Ecclestone will longer be the Formula 1 supremo. Nevertheless, an announcement from Liberty Media, the new owners of F1’s commercial rights, confirmed that he has been replaced

by Chase Carey, Sean Bratches, and the familiar and well respected figure of Ross Brawn.

In 1958, Bernie Ecclestone entered the sport as a driver manager, a career that he ended in the 60s following the death of his driver, Jochen Rindt.

In 1972, he bought the Brabham team with Colin Chapman and won the championship within the next several years. Arguably, he’d be set onto his true path as he took on the sport’s governing body with the commercial rights being the prize.

By recognising that the real money lay in television he manufactured deals, which transformed him from a millionaire to a twice-over billionaire.

Simultaneously, his efforts had converted an amateur motor racing series into a professional, and truly global, spectacle unequivocally known as the world’s pinnacle racing series, Formula 1.

However, despite what he has done for the sport in his five decades in charge, there aren’t

too many who will be sad to see him go. More recently the sport has lost some of its allure and as of this year there is no German Grand Prix on the calendar while France has been off the ticket for nearly a decade.

What’s more is that F1 no longer races at many historic circuits because the organisers cannot afford to pay Ecclestone’s ask while several others are under threat. He has also been fiercely resistant to embracing social media as part of the sport as he reasoned that there was no money to be made from it.

This and many other concepts such as the illconceived elimination-style qualifying format, a proposed medal system instead of points, and the much criticised double points season finale in 2014 have led to an overwhelming sea of disapproval.

Whatever opinion might be of Bernie Ecclestone there is little doubt that he has been instrumental in creating the Formula 1 phenomenon. Whether he’s officially part of the sport or not he will always be remembered for helping to build it. So long, Mr E, and thank you for turning Formula 1 into the greatest show on earth.

Give your car a little lovin’ this month ­ 10 simple tips to extend its life IT is the month of love and just like you take care of your loved ones, you should be taking care of your car.

“There is no truer saying than ‘Take care of your car and it will take care of you’,” said Vishal Premlall, Director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA).

With the cost of living on the rise, taking care of your vehicle should be at the top of your priority list. “You don’t have to be a mechanical expert to take care of your car. You just need to be aware of what you should be keeping an eye on and keep a regular maintenance schedule,” Premlall said.

He provided 10 simple basic car care tips to ensure your car stays on the road longer and that you pick up smaller repairs before they become big ticket items.

These 10 car care tips are:

1. Read the car’s manual and schedule maintenance accordingly. Do not let your manual sit neglected in your glove compartment. Keeping up with your car’s recommended maintenance schedule can help avoid costly problems with your cooling system, drivetrain, suspension and other components.

Following the recommended schedule religiously and only use quality oil, fluids and parts.

2. Battery Check. Like other car parts that have been made to last longer, most car batteries are maintenance-free and can last more than three years.

The first sign that may indicate you need a new battery is if you have trouble starting the engine.

3. Good Visibility. One of the most neglected basic car care tips is taking care of your windshield wipers. You should change your wipers every 12 months or if the rubber becomes worn.

You will also want to check the wiper fluid reservoir and keep it full.

4. Use online forums. You want to learn about potential problems before they happen so that you can prevent them -- or fix them immediately.

Find an owners’ forum online and get on the wavelength of what the potential problems could be as your car gets older.

5. Check the fluids. You should check the level of your antifreeze, oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid, very regularly.

It is advisable to check these every time you put in petrol.

Even if your car does not leak fluids, it can develop a leak and quickly have a dangerously low level of fluids.

It is also important to change the oil regularly. This will improve your mileage and protect your engine. The recommended mileage between oil changes is 5 000 to 8 000 kilometres or every 3 to 6 months. It is also important to change the oil filter as well - there is no sense in putting clean oil through a dirty filter, and filters are cheap and available at any parts store.

Check your service manual, or contact your dealer for your car’s specific needs.

6. Brake Pads. Monitor your brake pad thickness and don’t let the pads wear down to metal. This will cause damage to your brake rotors (discs) at least and possibly your callipers as well. Rotors and callipers are much more expensive to replace than pads.

7. Rotate the tyres. Changing tyre position is very important and reduces uneven wear and tear on the tread, thus extending the life of the tyres. Generally they should be rotated diagonally - front right to rear left and front left to rear right.

You also need to check your tyre pressure regularly. Proper tyre inflation will help the tyres handle better and last longer, and it will help you get the most out of a tank of petrol. It is also a good idea to have your tyres checked for wear regularly.

8. Use your hand brake. Even if you are driving a car with an automatic transmission, use your hand brake regularly, especially if you are parked on an incline. It helps keep the brakes adjusted in the rear of the car and makes them last longer.

9. Do not ignore small problems. Pay close attention to your vehicle’s noises and also to its warning lights and even cosmetic things, like a piece of rubber trim that’s loose.

Ignoring a problem only allows it to get worse and parts for aging vehicles only get harder to find.

10. Give your car some love. Wash it, wax it and vacuum it and treat all leather surfaces. You will protect both the paint and the interior from aging prematurely.

Premlall said these tips are all valid irrespective of whether you own a new or used vehicle and stresses again the importance of regular maintenance which is the key to extending the life of your car.

Breakers Rugby Club suffer yet another defeat TEMBILE SGQOLANA DESPITE starting the game on a high note, Breakers suffered their third consecutive loss during the weekend when they were beaten 33-24 by Parks on Saturday.

The game started with Breakers applying pressure to the visitors and after five minutes of hard work, Breakers were awarded when Siwela Henama scored the first try for the home team.

Bompy Ngculu and Sphamandla Lali added two quick tries each to help the home team take the early lead.

Parks came back into the game with their lock Khule Sonkosi scoring two tries in the late minutes of the first half.

Parks eight-man Ryno Haasbroek scored the last try of the first half and the team when to half time tied at 19 all.

Haasbroek broke the deadlock in the second half after ten minutes of playing but his celebrations were shortlived as Wonga Gede scored a try for Breakers to make the score 26-24.

Parks flank Quintin Haasbroek scored the

last try of the game to make the score 33-24.

Parks full-back converted four conversions to help his team win the game.

Parks manager Justin Strezer said, “We gained momentum as we were about to go into half time and we came back into the game in the second half. We kept our structures and kept to our game plan – that helped us win the game,” he said.

Strezer said Breakers’ forwards played very well.

“The game was played in a good spirit and Breakers’ centres played an excellent game. Khule Sonkosi and Samkele Mkele were outstanding during the game,” he said.

Breakers manager Solomon Manzi has, however, expressed his unhappiness over some of the decisions made by the referees during their game against Parks on Saturday and their opening game against Cambridge recently.

Speaking to Queenstown Express after the game on Saturday, Manzi said “In this game alone, Parks made a number of fouls, but the referee and the linesman ignored them,” he said.

Centane wins Build It U/13 soccer tourney TEMBILE SGQOLANA CENTANE Build It walked away as winners of the Build It Under-13 soccer tournament which took place at the Dumpy Adams Sport Complex on Saturday.

They beat Whittlesea Build It in the finals of the tournament.

The tournament saw 18 teams produce entertaining soccer, despite the humid Komani conditions.

Fans and family members of the players came in droves to support the teams.

The Komani team did not do well in the competition as it failed to progress past the group stages after losing three games and drawing one.

The only team that flew the Enoch Mgijima Municipality flag high was the Whittlesea team, which went all the way to the finals, despite some challenges after four of its players were asked to verify their ages.

Speaking about his team’s achievement, Centane Built It coach Sive Mabona said “This has

been a long journey and we have been preparing for this day since we heard what the date (of the tournament) was.

Mabona thanked the parents of the kids who participated in the tournament for allowing their kids to travel long distances and trust them with their safety.

“I am also happy that one of our players, Lwando Mdodana, has been selected for Super Sport United development,” he said.

Build It under 13 zonal project manager, Monwabisi Jaza, said this year’s tournament was to

the same high standard as those held in previous years.

“The tournament was a success and the children played well,” he said.

Jaza said there were, however, challenges due to children cheating with their ages. Those who were found cheating were disqualified.

“Last year’s winners, King William’s Town, were disqualified after they fielded players who were not on their team list.

“The (Centane) team played very well and the deserving team won the final,” he said.
