Rare tourists fly in! Local residents from Komani were delighted last week by the rare sighting of flamingos at Piggeries farm dam, just outside town on the Whittlesea road. While flamingos are not migratory birds, climate and water level changes force them to migrate. The drought in the Northern Cape, and specifically the Kamfers Dam, which is home to thousands of lesser flamingos, had a severe impact on their breeding this season. PHOTO:SUSAN SCHLEBUSCH

ADMINISTRATION CRISIS:

Premier asked to intervene T SANELE JAMES

HE South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), the driving force behind the recent municipal workers’ strike at the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, made it public that they do not recognise Vuyo Mlokothi as the institution’s administrator, and will thus not cooperate with him.

According to Chris Hani District ANC regional treasurer, Madoda Papiyane, the regional leadership also do not want Mlokothi as the administrator - a fight that has been going on for months. Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality Samwu leader, Thabo Ngwane, said if their demands were not attended to they would render the municipality defective and lobby for the total removal of the entire council. Ngwane said this when they marched last week to the municipal town hall to submit a memorandum of demands for the attention of Premier Oscar Mabuyane. In their list of demands the union

called for the immediate removal of Mlokothi and the review of section 139 intervention by the provincial government that they said was initiated by former CoGTA MEC Fikile Xasa. “We demand the immediate withdrawal of withholding the municipality’s equitable share, as that hinders service delivery and municipal operations. The basis for withholding an equitable share is unconstitutional and invalid,” read a paragraph on the demands. While all this happened, the municipality held a special council meeting where the Mayor, Councillor Luleka Gubhula, confirmed that their equitable share had been withheld until the entire institution fully cooperated with the administrator. In the same meeting, Gubhula announced the resignation of the acting municipal manager, Gcobani Mashiyi. MEC for CoGTA, Xolile Nqatha, wrote to the mayor asking them to rescind the appointment of Mashiyi as the acting municipal manager, saying his appointment was illegal and the administrator and the municipal manager can’t coexist as they do the same job: advising the council.”

According to Gubhula, the resistance to cooperate with the administrator has led to treasury withholding their equitable share – something that has put all service delivery on hold. “With the low revenue streams, the

municipality has been dependent on the equitable share to pay its Eskom account. Wednesday last week the institution didn’t have enough money to honour its quarterly payment of R20 million to the power utility. “We owe Eskom more than

R150 million in arrears and our current account continues to accumulate. As we speak, we don’t have money to pay for the quarter ending in July, which is why we need to accept the terms of the MEC for CoGTA, so our funds can be released and we will be able to pay and continue with the businesses of the municipality.” Samwu, meanwhile, has accused the council of thinking with their stomachs. “The MEC for CoGTA has hit the council where it hurts the most – in the stomach; hence they are forcing us to accept the administrator. They fear being dissolved,” said Ngwane. As the strike enters its third week, ratepayers - especially those living in Top Town, Ezibeline and Mlungisi townships - suffer water shortages as the supply of water has been hampered by the prolonged power outages. Heaps of garbage, furthermore, litter the streets in residential areas leaving a foul smell and attracting stray animals. The premier of the province has seven days (which ends today, Thursday) to attend to Samwu’s demands.

Bowlers gather for Christmas in July tournament The Queenstown Golf (Bowling) Club hosted its first annual Christmas in July tournament this past Sunday. Some of the clubs and players that played on the greens were from Molteno, Cathcart and the Queenstown Bowling Club. Co-ordinator of the event, Leon Pretorious, said the tournament was meant to attract young players into the sport that many associate with elderly people. The winners of the tournament bagged big prizes in the form of money and bottles of wine. ‘Queenstown Express’ reporter SANELE JAMES was there to capture some of the winners’ celebrations.

The team that took the first prize consisted of Gerhard Odendaal (second), Rose Esternheuizen (lead), with organiser of the tournament Leon Pretorious, Lori Taggard (skip) and Steyn Steyn (third) of the Queenstown Golf Club.

Local municipality ‘sleeping’ on revenue SANELE JAMES THE EFF leadership in the Chris Hani region had to give the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality a wake-up call so it could begin exploiting some of its revenue streams. Despite all the financial problems the municipality is experiencing, it has been neglecting to collect revenue from a business, which has been operating in its property for free. According to Councillor Luthando Amos, of the EFF, who serves on the municipality’s finance committee, the businessman has always wanted to pay for occupying the municipal land, but the municipality ignored his application.

“As I serve on the finance committee, I went around looking at how the municipality could improve its revenue through its land and properties and I came across Amjad Farooq, of Osama Hardware, who confirmed that he never paid a cent to the municipality,” he said. Amos said when Farooq started his business on the vacant piece of land, it used to belong to the Department of Housing and was transferred to the municipality 18 months ago. “The municipality has been ‘sleeping on’ revenue for years while there are people who are willing to pay,” he said. Farooq confirmed that he never paid rent to the municipality, but he would begin pay-

ing a sum of R15 500 at the end of this month. “I am not a crook. I am a legit businessman and I will pay what is required of me every month. And it’s not that I never wanted to pay but I didn’t know who to pay to after I had gone to the municipality many times,” he said. He also denied the allegations that he had been paying rent to individuals who pretended to be representatives of the municipality. Amos said there were other properties that the municipality could make money from but they were illegally occupied by current and former municipal councillors. In June, the Daily Dispatch reported that former Enoch Mgijima councillors and a manager at the municipality were reportedly living in municipal flats in Sunshine Village Old Age Home

in Komani for free. “The home in Laurie Dashwood Park is designated for pensioners and there is a long waiting list. In the municipality’s special council meeting, community safety head Adele Hendricks revealed that former councillors and municipal employees were living there for free,” the paper reported. Last month, ANC councillor Mncedisi Mbengo also lambasted the municipality’s department of housing for allowing municipality property to be vandalised instead of leasing it after he busted a group of boys removing electrical sockets from a house in Sandringham. The municipality couldn’t be reached for a comment because of the ongoing strike.

Local residents celebrate Mandela’s birthday in style Businesses, NPOs, different spheres of government and community members celebrated the international Mandela Day, in commemoration of former president Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18. Queenstown Express reporter SANELE JAMES was there to capture some of the festivities.

Staff from Old Mutual celebrated Nelson Mandela's birthday with residents of John Voster Old Age Home.

The Nonzwakazi Methodist Church supplied newborns at the Frontier Hospital with new clothes.

The Chris Hani District Municipality’s moral regeneration unit visited Mzwabantu Hospice and John Voster Old Age Home on the day, where they shared lunch and goodies with the senior residents.

Mivuyo Siwa, Akhanya Dandala, Othandwayo Mrubata, Aqhamile Samente, Nikilitha Mbanjwa, Yamkela Dastile, Mlibo Godongwana and Iviwe Sabsana of Nokwanda Primary took the opportunity to pick up rubbish at their school.

Community members from Ezibeleni assisted in painting the classrooms at Nokwanda Primary School.

First service centre for township SANELE JAMES TWO young businesspeople from Ezibeleni Township have braved it out and realised their dream after eight years of investing in the township economy. Enathi and Zozo Mashologu quit their jobs eight years ago to become their own bosses. Enathi used to be in the security sector and Zozo in the construction industry. But due to the fields being saturated, they both left and will today be opening a state-of-the-art branch of a national franchise car service centre in Ezibeleni. It’s the first of its kind in any of the local townships. Asked how the idea came about and why they opted to invest in a township rather than the central business area, Zozo said their primary objective was to develop the township by bringing services to the people. She said many investors were ‘sleeping on’ the money that flows out from the townships to the CBD, comparing the situation to those people who migrate from small

towns to bigger cities. “Few people reside in the CBD. Many live in the townships and the majority of these people are consumers. “This is why spaza shops thrive in such areas. “The township economy remains untapped especially in the auto sector,” said Zozo. The service centre – Car Service City – will be trading at Unit E10.4 Roygana Road and will be servicing all makes of vehicles. Enathi said that, through working with the Ikhala TVET’s faculty of mechanical engineering, they were bridging the skills gap by offering in-service training to graduates at their doorsteps. “This will benefit the township in many ways because we will also be offering evening services. “Locals will benefit through employment opportunities, which will help us retain our skilled young people in Komani,” Enathi added. The centre, which cost more than R1 million to construct, also boasts an application that allows motorists to keep track of their service history.

PCA SA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lubobo to flex muscles on national stage SANELE JAMES BODYBUILDER Anam Lubobo will represent the Border region at this year’s PCA SA Championships in Johannesburg on August 17. Lubobo, who is from Bhede in Komani, attributes his success to his determination to stand up to bullies in primary school. He qualified for the finals after securing a first place at the qualifying Queen’s Grand Prix last month. Lubobo will compete in the 75kg and under category after notching up an impressive record in the u.18 section before taking a break in 2016. His passion for the sport was ignited when he attended the local St Theresa’s Primary School with his dad, an all-rounder athlete at the time. He said he was pushed to lift weights so he could have a masculine body, because as a young boy he was teased about his petiteness.

“I won’t lie, it hurt a lot, to a point that I sometimes didn’t want to go to school. “I would be bullied, shoved around and my schoolmates would say all sorts of mean things about my thin body. “So I decided to join the gym and build some muscles,” he said. At the time he would train at home, using his dad’s equipment, until he felt confident enough to join the big boys at Johnny’s Gym. “After years of training at Johnny’s Gym, the owner of the institution, Johnny Moutzouris, approached me and asked me to consider competing in body-building competitions. “But I didn’t have enough confidence and many other people, like (leading local bodybuilder) Sanga Gijana, believed that I was ready. Since then I’ve never looked back,” he said. The 20-year-old promising body-builder resides in Sandton, Gauteng, where he studies Sport Management and Development.

He is now home in Komani training at Johnny’s Gym, preparing for the House of Legends competition to take place in Alice at the University of Fort Hare. “In Gauteng, I train at Virgin Active but, because I am home, I felt like going back to where it all started at Johnny’s, so I can maintain my body in preparation for two upcoming events,” he said. Lubobo says he isn’t planning to drop out of the sport anytime soon, but instead wants to make it his second source of income. “The sport is very expensive and it needs proper maintenance. In the future, I want to compete professionally but I first need to gather sponsors who will help me develop,” he said.

Local boxer successfully defends his national title THANDO MGEDEZI LOCAL Whittlesea boxer, Xolisa ‘Gusheshe’ Magusha, retained his South African minimum flyweight title on Sunday afternoon, with a unanimous 12-round points decision victory over his challenger, Siyakholwa Kuse, at the Orient Theatre in East London. The battle between the 27-year-old Magusha and 20-year-old Kuse from Duncan Vil-

lage was the best fight of the afternoon and has been touted as a strong contender for the South African fight of the year. Kuse, who is ranked number eight in the division, had an outstanding performance against the champion from the Chris Hani District in a closely encounter that could have gone either way. The judges scored the fight 115-114, 115-113 and 116-112. Gusheshe admitted he was surprised by Kuse’s ability to adapt his style during the

fight on Sunday, as the challenger gave him a great fight. “He surprised us on the day, as he kept coming at me and even my trainer told me to be careful all the time in the ring. “I was not expecting that kind of fight from him. “But I am glad that I managed to put forth a controlled and measured display, and outpointed him,” Magusha told Queenstown Express.

Magusha and his team of trainers are looking forward to his next title defence although they do not yet know who will be the next challenger. “We are going back to training and we will work on some of the things that my trainers picked up on Sunday,” concluded Magusha. Magusha won the title from Siphamandla Baleni in a unanimous 12-round points decision at the same venue last year.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Max Verstappen crowned king of the ring in Germany ON its day, there isn’t a sport that can match the drama, exhilaration and rapture of Formula 1. And on a rainy day in Germany, Formula 1 delivered a race to remember. Saturday qualifying was embarrassing for Ferrari as neither Sebastian Vettel nor Charles Leclerc made it to the final shoot-out as both cars suffered technical failures. It left Lewis Hamilton to secure pole position with Max Verstappen alongside him. The Hockenheimring was drenched in rain on race day, prompting a couple of formation laps behind the safety car but conditions were good enough for a standing start. Hamilton led away cleanly from pole, as a bad start, similar to that in Austria, dropped Verstappen down the order. It allowed Valtteri Bottas into second while Kimi Raikkonen scythed his way into third. Leclerc, starting 10th, made an impressive start to be running sixth within a few laps while Vettel, too, charged his way through the backmarkers to 14th. The first safety car was brought out by Sergio Perez’s crash, which triggered the first round of pitstops with drivers swopping full wets for intermediate tyres. The virtual safety car (VSC) was then deployed for Daniel Ricciardo’s Renault that expired in a plume of smoke. As conditions improved, drivers dived back into the pits for dry tyres. With Hamilton and Bottas still running in first and second, Verstappen struggled to heat his medium tyres and spun in the stadium section but rejoined without any damage. Again, the VSC would be called on, as this time Lando Norris retired. Leclerc, in possible contention for a race win, ran wide at the penultimate corner and slammed his Ferrari into the barrier, which prompted the appearance of the safety car. No sooner had Leclerc stepped out of his cockpit than race leader Hamilton lost control of his car at the same corner. He was able to rejoin but needed a new front wing. He incurred a five-second penalty for failing to enter the pitlane before the bollard that indicates the correct pit entry and his arrival caught his team unawares. The pit crew rushed around

for the correct tyres and a new nose but thanks to the safety car, Hamilton emerged in fifth. As the race ‘settled’ Verstappen was comfortably in the lead ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, who soon found himself in the same barrier as Hamilton and Leclerc. Yet another safety car was called on, as drivers dived back into the pits to change to intermediate tyres. However, Lance Stroll gambled on dry tyres, which worked a treat as the Canadian driver found himself briefly in the lead. Verstappen regained the lead shortly after, with Stroll desperately holding on to second ahead of Daniil Kvyat, Bottas and Carlos Sainz. As Kvyat took second place from Stroll a few laps later, it was going from bad to worse for Hamilton who flat-spotted all four tyres in a high-speed 360 in turn one. Bottas, just like Hamilton, spun at turn one and destroyed the front of the Mercedes, prompting yet another safety car. As the race restarted, it was Vettel’s turn to come alive. He produced several brilliant overtakes to pass Sainz, Stroll and Kvyat in quick succession. It was a brilliant drive for Vettel, who started last on the grid, but kept his composure amid the chaos, to finish a fabulous second. The seventh victory of Verstappen’s career was likely his most mature and revealed a driver ready to be a championship contender. His teammate, Pierre Gasly, had a miserable afternoon. His coming together with Toro Rosso’s Alex Albon put him out of the race and likely marked the end of his Red Bull career. Kvyat deserved the driver of the day award for a sensational third place finish. Stroll finished fourth ahead of Sainz and Albon. The Alfa Romeos of Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi finished seventh and eighth but were later given 30-second penalties, promoting Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen to seventh and eighth while Hamilton also benefited by being elevated to ninth. It also means that Williams secured their first point of the season with the elevation of Robert Kubica to 10th. Although this German Grand Prix is likely to be the last for the foreseeable future, it went out on a spectacularly high note.

OC finally get off the mark in Border Rugby THANDO MGEDEZI KOMANI-BASED rugby side, Old Collegians RFC, finally notched up their first victory of the Border Premier League campaign on Saturday, when they overwhelmed East London’s Cambridge 62-40 at the Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre in Komani. The home side had gone eight matches without a victory in the competition, but their determination on the day was too much for the visitors, who have been ranked in the top six this season. It was a performance that OC would be proud of, as they had little control of the ball but exploited the mistakes

of the East London side to such an extent that Cambridge looked almost ordinary despite their good recent form. “As a team, we are delighted with the win, especially after not getting any points all season. But we know that we have 160 minutes left (in the season) and we have to fight as if our lives depend on it in our remaining two games. “We are cautiously optimistic but at the same time the belief is back that we can have a great escape. We are taking it one game at a time,” said club chairperson, Maxwell Levine. OC’s last two games are against Ngculu Zebras in Nqamakhwe and Young Leopards at home.

Another Komani-based side in the Border Premier League, Shining Stars RFC, was supposed to take on United Brothers in Mooiplaas but the game was postponed after the bus they were travelling on broke down on their way to the game. In the Border Super League, Breakers RFC were denied their third consecutive win in the league when they lost 46-26 to on form and experienced Swallows RFC in Mdantsane. Breakers will be playing at home this weekend at the Mlungisi Stadium against Buffalo RFC from East London while their last game of the season will be away in Chalumna against Black Eagles.

Hangklip first team beats Malan in Komani THANDO MGEDEZI THE first rugby team of Hangklip High School in Komani outplayed De Vos Malan High School from King William’s Town on their homefield at the Gerrie Snyman Sports Ground on Saturday – scoring 53-12. Hangklip tightened up their game

from their last disappointing home loss at the hands of Aliwal North High School. The home team ran in eight tries to win the game, while 18 points came from full-back Siphelele Mgwigwi, who scored a try, a penalty and five conversions. Hooker Merric Hykes dotted down twice, while other tries

came from Lusindiso Nqayi, Pieter van Schalkwyk, Kieran Moorcraft, Iviwe Siyeka and Athenkosi Jacobs. The eight tries Hangklip scored during the course of this moraleboosting win were the most they have scored this year at the ground and was the last home game for some of the players.

Cumakala ready to face Executive at home THANDO MGEDEZI SASOL Women’s League Inland Stream title hopefuls Cumakal Ladies FC from Cacadu and Executive Ladies’ FC from Ntabankulu will meet in a crunch clash at Freemantle Boys’ High School sports fields, in Cacadu, on Saturday. Cumakala missed out on a third successive league win when they were held 1-1 in Lusikisiki by Eastern Rangers Ladies’ FC on July 20. Despite the result, the Chris Hani District side is still in the top four of the standings, with 10 points after seven games.

The team has claimed eight points from four home matches this season, recording two wins and two draws, and has not been defeated at home. Their only loss this season was at the hands of their weekend opponents, Executive Ladies, in Ntabankulu, in the first round. “It is payback time now; they are coming in our backyard. We lost 2-1 in Ntabankulu. They were lucky to get us on a counter attack in that game and we now know what to expect from them. “They are the only team who have beaten us this season and we cannot lose at their hands again,” said Cumakala head coach, Wezo

Ndiki. Executive Ladies are in third place, a point ahead of Cumakala. The team from Ntabankulu are not good travellers, as they have only claimed one point from three away games this season, with a draw on the road in Mthatha, against Ayakha Stars, in early May. “Our aim is to win the league or finish second this season. As you can see there is not much difference between us and the three teams above us,” Ndiki told Queenstown Express. The team is being trained by their coach in Komani, as most of their players go to schools around Komani.

“It was a great game and an emotional one for the matriculates. We were also missing some key players. “But the guys who were on the pitch knew that it was their turn to step up and deliver the goods on the day,” said Hangklip first team coach, Francois de Villiers. The visitors were the first team to cross the white line on the day as they scored the first two tries of the game. “We started off slowly and made

two unforced errors and De Vos Malan scored from those two errors, which put us under pressure in the first half, but luckily we came back even before half time. “In the second half, we made a change putting in our seasoned captain at no 8. He made a difference and helped us a lot. Generally, we are very happy with the second-half performance, scoring 38 unanswered points,” concluded De Villiers.

Phoenix now leads Komani Zone Stream A with 21 points with a game in hand, while second placed Kaizer United FC, who also won 4-1 against Komani Stars, has 19 points after nine games. Phoenix head coach, Ringo Klaas, was extremely happy following his side’s big win. “It is not easy to keep

the level we have been playing at, but we did it. “Overall, I’m delighted with the performance of the boys. Now we prepare for the next game. We will take it one game at a time,” said Klaas. In third place is Dynamos FC, with 18 points after nine games, while All Star XI FC is in fourth with 15 points. Fifth place is occupied by Rising Stars FC with 15 points. New Valle Stars FC is the only team without a single point at the bottom of Stream A. Teenagers FC is languishing at the bottom of Stream B without a point after six games this season.
