STAFF BACK AT WORK: RATEPAYERS THREATEN TO WITHHOLD PAYMENT THIS MONTH

EMLM strike called off SANELE JAMES

T

HE prolonged strike staged by Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality workers has finally come to an end and services are up and running.

The municipality convened a special council meeting on Tuesday morning when the municipality also announced that the administrator of the institution, who was placed at the struggling municipality, is on sick leave and an acting incumbent had been appointed. This was followed by a public

statement issued by the municipality’s spokesperson, Gcobani Msindwana, saying, “This serves to confirm that the municipal strike is over after the stakeholders met and agreed on issues that were the bone of contention. “Tomorrow (Wednesday) all services will be up and running.” The Mayor, Luleka Gubhula, also visited one of the local radio stations confirming the end to the strike. The municipal workers were initially striking against the administrator, Vuyo Mlokothi, who they said wasn’t fit to lead the municipality and effectively rescue it from the doldrums.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), was identified as the main force behind the industrial action. The union’s leader in the Enoch Mgijima area, Thabo Ngwane, said they had nothing against the invocation of section 139 by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs but they had a problem with the administrator’s terms of reference and how he was introduced. “We as the key stakeholders weren’t formerly consulted about the invocation of section 139 or even the administrator’s terms of reference. And we made it clear to the

MEC for CoGTA but we were told to wait for the elections to pass. So this is a long battle,” said Ngwane. MEC Xolile Nqatha attempted to resolve the issue last week in a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Jesus Christ Church in town, but chaos erupted and the meeting collapsed. At the time before the strike ended, Nqatha had threatened to use the courts to interdict the strike and force workers to return to their workstations. Komani Residents United secretary, Axolile Masiza, said they would advise ratepayers to not pay for services that were not rendered while workers were on strike.

“We are working jointly with other civic organisations to tell people to not pay for services they never received during the strike. “These people were fighting their political battles and we were the ones who suffered the most. “Next week they expect to receive salaries after embarking on an illegal strike. “People must not pay, so they (the workers) also feel the same pain we were subjected to when they downed tools,” said Masiza. He said if the municipality cut services to those who didn’t pay, they would take their protests to the streets because “that’s robbery”.

Women told to lift each other as they rise SANELE JAMES THE Komani Black Management Forum (BMF) recently held a debate, themed ‘Women in leadership: the role of women in leadership within the context of managerial leadership’, as part of Women’s Month. Among the speakers were BMF deputy chairperson, Tasneem Fredericks, Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) board chairperson, Nandipha Madiba,

and book author and transformation activist, Sihle Bolani. The debate looked into issues like patriarchy, chauvinism and misogyny which were said to be perpetuated by men for their own benefit. But all speakers conceded that women were at times their own worst and biggest enemies. Madiba said many women enjoyed being exceptional and being seen as successes when they broke through in male-dominated sectors.

“The ‘pull down syndrome’ really needs to stop, ladies. We women seem like we don’t want to see each other at the top. “Each of us wants to be seen as ‘the only woman’ who made it and if anyone tries climbing the ladder, we do everything possible to pull them down, whereas we are supposed to lift each other as we rise,” she said. Fredericks concurred with Madiba, saying women were divided to a point that they were not able to use the power of being the majori-

ty in the country and the world to influence change. “Unity is in numbers and we can only dismantle patriarchy and the undermining of women if we unite and work together, because we all want the same thing. “The women of 1956 joined forces and did it. Why can’t the women of today do the same because we have numbers? “Instead we are fighting each other and, in the process, losing focus,” she said, adding that according to a 2019 World Economic Fo-

rum study, it’s going to take a total of 108 years to close the general gender gap. “The odds are stacked against us already, but we always rise. “We must get to a point where we assist each other, as men do, to advance, empower and develop each other, so we are represented on boards and other senior positions. “All this shouting won’t get us anywhere if we continue pulling each other down when we want to rise,” she said.

Tarkastad man is EC Young Farmer of the Year DA wins ward 10 by-election REPORTER

TARKASTAD sheep farmer Matthew Morgan, has been named the Toyota Eastern Cape Young Farmer of the Year at an awards ceremony during the Agri EC annual congress held recently in Jeffrey’s Bay.

Morgan (34) was up against Jaco Kotze, who farms boer goats and lucerne in the Elands River Valley, for the provincial title, which will see him representing the Eastern Cape at the national awards later this year. Farming mainly with wool sheep and a smaller herd of Hereford beef cattle, Morgan described his win as “a great honour” and said it is an absolute privilege to farm in his district. “I’m feeling very positive about the farm. “ I run a quality sheep flock and our clean air

and good ground cover enable us to produce a beautiful, clean white wool,” he said. Morgan said he was fortunate to be farming on land that yielded high production with great potential for further developments – if resources were managed with maximum efficiency. “I am always trying to add value to my farm, and make it a better place for all who live there – my family, my staff, and my livestock. “We as young farmers need to raise the bar, and be in a position to hand it over to the next generation in a better condition than we received it in,” he said. Morgan, who is also chairperson of his local Winterberg Agricultural Association, inherited his farm, Redcliffe, from his father 10 years ago. Since then, he has grown production by developing the lands under irrigation, increased its carrying capacity through effective veld man-

agement, and lowered mortality rates through strict vermin control. In addition, he attributed his success to the efficient work ethic of his employees and the mutual respect earned through a “firm but fair” management approach, which he said he also inherited from his father. “Farming has become so precise and tight that you have got to make every bit count. We work very hard to produce what we do.” Morgan added that farming was much more than a job to him, and he is involved in various community projects, such as the farmers’ association cattle project and organising the annual sheep shearing competition at the annual Tarka Agricultural Show. “When you know you are happy and enjoying what you are doing, when you are excited for Monday, that’s when you know you are in the right place!”

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) secured Ward 10 of the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality in the recent byelection, with Tokkie Deysel obtaining the vast majority of votes. Following its victory in the ward by-election, the DA says residents of Ward 10 have reaffirmed their trust in the opposition party. According to DA Eastern Cape leader, Nqaba Bhanga, they retained the ward after a hard-fought by-election - obtaining 74% of the valid vote cast. Deysel, a proud resident of Komani since 1967, is retired and able to devote all his energy into assisting the community. Deysel is the former chairperson of the Ratepayers Association and also has extensive experience in trade union activities. He has also served on various committees of the South African Local Government Bargaining Council and obtained an NQF 7 qualification in practical labour law. He has been married to Johanna for 51 years and they have three children. When not fighting for the residents, Deysel enjoys rugby, cricket, bowls and travelling. “The DA’s support in ward 10 shows a massive increase and the party improved on the 46,75% share of the vote it achieved in the 2019 national and provincial elections,” said Bhanga, who feels that the specific community is tired of being neglected and ignored. “This result is a resounding vote of confidence in the DA,” Bhanga said. “The endorsement from the voters proves that the DA remains on track ahead of the 2021 local government elections and is poised to take over government in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality. “We are grateful to voters for giving us this mandate and we don’t take it lightly,” Bhanga said.

Veteran educator plans evening centre for children SANELE JAMES NOBANZI Mzilikazi, who is popularly known as ‘Girl’, from Mlungisi Township, has announced exciting plans for the Masibambane Educare Centre, which she co-founded with Nokulunga Maqholo. The 81-year-old started the centre in 1994 in the garage of her home, with nothing but a vision. Over the years the school has grown to a fully fledged institution of learning with an enrolment of 74 children. Masibambane takes care of preschoolers during the day, while most of their parents and guardians are at work. But now the centre wants to upgrade and accommodate children even in the evening, for those parents who work night shifts.

The centre with four classrooms, a dining hall, kitchen, sickbay and toilets, was constructed by the National Development Agency in 2014, but was never finished. Mzilikazi and Maqholo had to carry the rest of the construction work on their shoulders. “I started with only four kids, but the demand grew and many other parents brought their children to Masibambane. “At the time I wasn’t registered with any institution, so I had to feed a total of 56 children from my own pocket. Because I had a bigger vision, I soldiered on. “But the demand for my services meant that I had to add some professionalism, so I went to study a four-year course on early childhood development (ECD) with Khululeka Community Education Development Centre,” she said. When Mzilikazi went for her training, Maqho-

lo held the fort until her partner graduated. “When I got back, it was Maqholo’s turn to further her education in the field. She went further than I did, because apart from the ECD qualification, she also holds a certificate in first aid. This is all driven by a vision and hard work,” said Mzilikazi. The two women registered the school with the Department of Social Development in 1996 and began receiving monthly stipends to feed the learners. But it wasn’t enough as children continued flooding in. “Parents saw the good work we were doing and it was they who proposed that we begin charging fees. “These fees assisted us with the completion of the construction work at the school,” said Mzilikazi. “After levelling the floors, we approached a local store that sells furniture and carpets. They advised us to start saving money with them on a monthly basis and they would put a carpet on our floors at discounted prices. And all that

amounted to R10 000,” she said. Maqholo said they were now working towards their next step. “Age won’t stop us from making a difference. We pitched the idea of a facility that will look after kids in the evening to local parents and they welcomed it. “This will also address the issue of young mothers who end up locking up their babies alone at night in their homes when they need to go out somewhere. We will be a safe alternative to the community,” said Maqholo. The institution also provides training space to recent graduates and trainees in ECD. Mzilikazi and Maqholo say they want to leave a legacy for the Komani community. “I am over the age of 80 and my partner is over 50. We can die anytime now, but what we have started will forever benefit those left behind,” said Mzilikazi. The school recently held a ‘pyjama day’ to raise funds where all the learners were dressed in their pyjamas.

Opportunity for local musicians SANELE JAMES THE Komani Creative Industry co-operative is on a mission to unearth raw local talent in and around Komani. The youth-led co-op, which is mainly focused on creative arts, is busy convening auditions where winners will get an opportunity to perform at a live concert and be groomed into professional artists. Auditions were already held at the Komani Arts Centre and the Ezibeleni Community Hall. The next auditions will be in Cacadu (Lady Frere) on August 17, in Molteno on the 31st and in the Ilinge Community Hall on September 7. The programme is the brainchild of local musician, poet and praise singer, Unathi Debese, working in conjunction with other artists and institutions like Oxford University Press, Hartford Academy, the Department of Education and the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

Debese said the idea behind the initiative was to keep young people busy, particularly the unemployed. “The voice is a God-given instrument one can use to make a living out of. With this programme we want to uncover new musicians and teach them how can they survive through music without having to beg, even if one doesn’t have a qualification,” she said. To participate in the auditions, artists must obtain a form from the organisers and pay a minimum fee of R30. “Artists and ensembles with between one and three members will pay R30, while those between four and six members pay R60. Anything above that is R100,” said Debese’s business partner, Thembakazi Fatyela. Apart from prizes that are up for grabs at the auditions, winners will also perform at a music concert, scheduled to take place at the Komani Town Hall on September 24. For entry forms and enquiries, Unathi Debese and Thembakazi Fatyela can be contacted on 064 459 0197 or 067 029 8587.

r =2

Since the exponents are the same, we consider the bases as the answer

∴r=2 Now to nd the value of a we have to substitute 2 into one of the equations

5120 =

Since we have base 2 on the right-hand-side, then the left-hand-side must also bewritten as base 2 Since we have the same bases on both side we dropdown the exponents as shown below: Like terms must be on one side

Research suggests that about two-thirds of our body is composed of water and that it is essential for every function that our bodies perform. We always get told that it is important that we drink a lot of water and maybe never quite understand what goodness this element brings to us. Below is a list of some of the benefits that water provides for us: ) It lubricates the joints ) It forms saliva and mucus ) It delivers oxygen throughout the body ) It boosts skin health and beauty ) It cushions the brain, spinal cord, and other sensitive tissues ) It regulates body temperature ) It helps maintain blood pressure ) The airways need it ) It makes minerals and nutrients accessible ) It prevents kidney damage ) It boosts performance during exercise ) Water may also help with weight loss ) It reduces the chance of a hangover. Inadequate consumption of water may in turn lead to the following: dehydration, digestive problems, excess body fat, poor muscle tone and poor functioning of organs such as the brain and joints. So the next time you open your tap or a bottle of water remember the goodness that you are bringing to your body, so go on and drink more water. So how much is the “more water” that we are always advised to drink? It is advisable that a person should drink about 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. This is also dependent on one’s body weight. It is worth noting though, that as much as water has many benefits, some conditions require that a person drinks less due to the possibility of it accumulating in the body and not being excreted out properly. In those cases people are always advised by their healthcare practitioners on how much wa-

Queenstown Bowling Club celebrates its centenary SANELE JAMES THE Queenstown Bowling Club celebrated its centenary this past weekend, having been established in 1919. The club was established by John Terry Lloyd – one year after World

War 1 ended. It currently boasts a membership of 24 bowlers. It is now the oldest bowling club in the Border region, as Turnbull Park in East London has closed down. The club’s centenary celebrations were marked by a two-day tournament on August 10 and 11 where

bowlers strutted their stuff on the greens. Clubs that participated came from cities as far away as East London and Port Elizabeth. The winners of the celebratory tournament were the Midwaters team from Gariep Dam, while the

home side came second. During the celebrations, the Queenstown Bowling Club also raised funds for the cash-strapped local SPCA. “The bowlers raised a sum of R2 900 and the money will be used to purchase dog and cat food for the SPCA,

Rugby union legends formed SANELE JAMES AFTER three failed attempts, the Frontier Rugby Union Legends organisation was finally established, named and branded on Saturday. The union was successfully established after a meeting was held in Mlungisi Township, as part of the historical prelude to establishing the national body this Saturday, August 17, in Oudtshoorn. Bernard McPherson, who was elected as the chairperson of the union, said, “Thirteen members turned up and apart from (conducting) business, we also shared memories and recalled their happy and not so happy moments. “We could also bring our colleagues up to speed with our own growth, goals and future plans.” He said the union would now serve as a platform for members to keep each other in the loop of their experiences and issues pertaining to the sport. “This organisation will endeavour to encourage all past players, administrators, referees and coaches to return to the sport with the aim of revitalising the game and bringing it back to its previous glory days. “We are determined to create close working relationships with

as it is going through a turbulent time financially,” said the Queenstown Bowling Club’s captain, Peter LittleJohns. “This was all made possible by bowlers who have found fellowship through the sport,” he said.

stakeholders, including the community, Department of Education Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Chris Hani District Municipality, Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, the business community, Chris Hani and Provincial Sports Council and the local media,” said McPherson. He said they were determined to return the rugby fraternity to the stadiums on Wednesdays and Saturdays (as opposed to the smaller venues they currently use). “This is a major local mission but not our only target area. “Sports have suffered and the young talent is disappearing and therefore our senior clubs and provincial teams are not receiving the necessary resources to stake a national claim of recognition and achievement,” said McPherson. He said part of their mission was to address the issue of neglected sporting fields. “We understand and realise we are saddling up a horse that seems unlikely to be tamed, but with the right people working together in the right direction, we may just be in a position to accomplish some of our goals. We call on past rugby enthusiasts to come forward and provide support for the organisation,” he said.

Queen’s 1st team coach happy with season THANDO MGEDEZI QUEEN’S College Boys’ High School’s rugby season came to an end last week Friday with an away loss against Dale College in King William’s Town. Even though they lost twice in two months against Dale, the Queen’s College first team head coach, Pierre Jacobs, believes his team is progressing very well. The coach said his team had learnt important lessons from the bruising battles on the field this season and the experience would stand them in good stead. “Although there was an im-

provement on the results of last year, we are still striving for much better. This year the first team played 19 matches; we won nine and lost 10 of those matches,” said coach Jacobs. The coach also said the highlights of the season were definitely the growth and development of the players, the resilience to bounce back and their passion and commitment. “The victories over St Stithian’s, St David’s, Graeme College and recently Marlow, also stand out for me this season. “Our school is proud of the players who achieved Border Rugby

Union colours and obviously the selection of Sihlalo Benge in the SA Schools Academy team is a great honour,” said a proud Jacobs. The coach also said they were already planning extensively for next season, given the majority of players’ being unavailable next season.
