Laat daar altyd hoop in jou hart wees

Respect lockdown, says CHDM mayor ELSABÉ PIENAAR

HRIS Hani District Municipality Executive Mayor, Wongama Gela, has urged residents to respect the national Covid-19 lockdown.

In a statement on Monday, March 30, Gela reminded residents to leave home only to

buy food, seek medical care or collect social grants. “To those who must stand in queues, please observe social distance and keep the one metre distance from each other. “Only one person from a household should leave their home to access essential supplies or services. “These prescripts are set to protect com-

munities from the risk of contracting the virus,” Gela reiterated. While order was maintained on the first day of Sassa payments in Middelburg and Cradock, the numbers seemed too many for the limited number of municipal officials and other stakeholders in Komani, as thousands of elderly and disabled beneficiaries queued without adhering to social distanc-

ing. Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality spokesperson, Lonwabo Kowa, said councillors and officials used Komani Town Hall to reduce the post office queue. “We were also assisted by Chris Hani District Municipality who brought water tanks to help people drink and wash hands,” Kowa said.

‘Komani-Karoo Express’ not printed for the next two weeks REPORTER OWING to the 21-day national lockdown that President Cyril Ramaphosa announced to curb and contain the impact of Covid-19 in South Africa, and the im-

pact that this has had on our advertisers, Komani-Karoo Express will not be printed and published for the next two weeks. Printing and distribution of the community newspaper will continue as usual after the lockdown period, on Thursday,

April 23. We will still update our readers on our Facebook page where we will keep the Komani-Karoo community informed of the latest news and be a source of accurate and reliable information at a time when

fake news and paranoia are spreading faster than the Covid-19 virus itself. As we experience the impact of Covid-19 spreading across the world and SA as well, we hope that our readers and community members continue to stay safe.

A normal day in Ilinge despite national lockdown THANDO MGEDEZI IT is just an everyday ‘public holiday’ for residents of Ilinge Township just outside Komani, despite the fact that the country is on national lockdown to fight the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19). Early last week, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that the country

would be placed under a temporary lockdown for 21 days in an effort to control the spread of Covid-19, only allowing for essential personnel and those needing medical care to leave their homes for a limited period. Despite the call from the first citizen of the country, the residents of Ilinge Township and other people are seen roaming around doing their usual businesses while others are seen drunk in public, even though the

Nou kan Gift of the Givers 225 500 liter water per dag aflewer.

Verkeer was slegs vir ’n kort tydjie onderbreek.

sale of alcohol during the 21-day lockdown is strictly prohibited, according to the newly amended State of Disaster regulations. When Komani-Karoo Express asked one of the residents where they had bought alcohol, the man, who did not want to be mentioned by name, said, “We beg tavern owners to sell us alcohol while the police van is on the other side of the township.” Since the national lockdown started on

Friday morning, there has been no sign of South African National Defence Force members in Ilinge. Only one police van drove around the main street of the township monitoring local taverns to prevent the sale of alcohol. No comment could be obtained from the provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, at the time of going to print.

How to manage fear, cope with corona crisis REPORTER IN this time of global health crisis, South Africans from all walks of life are confronted with new realities in a challenging and uncertain environment, requiring of all of us to work on building and strengthening personal resilience. Being resilient means to be psychologically flexible, to take hold of our minds in order to calm our emotions and face the new realities that confront us with clear sight and thought. So advised Sandy Lewis, a clinical social worker and head of therapeutic services at Akeso mental health facilities, who was commenting on the mental effects that the Covid-19 outbreak in South Africa could have on individuals, families and communities. “Anxiety and worry are understandable emotions when looking into a future we simply cannot know. “Our anxiety serves little constructive purpose and tends to erode our personal resilience in the face of challenges,” said Lewis. “However, what we should be trying to do is to accept our rapidly changing reality for what it is, and turn our minds to confronting the immediate challenges we face.” Building personal resilience So what can we do to build and strengthen our personal resilience? Lewis suggested that one could start by not getting stuck in negative thinking and not dwelling on the past with thoughts like “I always expected something bad to happen to me”, or “Why me?” Worrying about the future and asking yourself questions such as “Am I perhaps going to fall ill and die?”, or “Will the economy crash and leave us destitute?”, tend to just lead to more anxiety. “We should direct our energy towards focusing on what we need to manage today, and solving those issues. Focus fully on the present, is much more useful than worrying about a future that none of us are able to predict,” she added.

Avoid your anxiety or depression triggers By establishing what triggers anxiety or other distractive responses such as selfblame in you, you can try to either steer clear of those triggers or find ways around them that will stop you from feeling anxious or negative. “Should you find you are having trouble stopping yourself from thinking about the future and being anxious, consider distracting yourself in healthy ways. For example, rather than worrying, listen to music, cook a meal, try a new hobby (indoors) or watch a favourite movie or series. “In the interim, strength, grace and tenacity are needed, so that we can all get through this together. “We need each other, both to prevent the spread of this disease, and to offer each other the support to cope with it until it is over. “Now is the time to be generous, thoughtful, kind and compassionate, with an attitude that embraces the well-being of all. “And if the world is a different place after Covid-19, then we will face that new reality with renewed strength, coping with its challenges day-by-day, in the same way that we dealt with this pandemic,” concluded Lewis.

Graaff-Reinet’s acclaimed ceramic artist ELSABÉ PIENAAR GRAAFF-REINET is home to a humble ceramic artist whose commissions are not only sold locally, but grace places like the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl. Thirty years ago, Marion Mangold was trained in ceramic design by the renowned Spanish tile artist, Lorenzo Checa, who at the time lived in Henley-on-Klip. After working in corporate insurance in Johannesburg for 18 years, Mangold finally decided to settle down in Graaff-Reinet in February 2018, pursuing her love for ceramic art full-time. “I don’t work with raw clay, but decorate and paint ready glazed tiles and crockery,” Mangold explained. “I like to work in themes, like the Karoo wildlife series I designed myself, and the GraaffReinet series, consisting of wellknown landmarks like Spandaukop, Reinet House and the NG Kerk.” Reinventing one’s art and keeping up with trends are important if an artist wishes his or her work to remain relevant, Mangold believes.

“Fashions have changed. Decorative tiles in bathrooms are no longer fashionable; people now opt for natural and polished looks. “Nowadays I do a lot of giftware, fireplaces and signage, like house numbers.” When Komani-Karoo Express dropped in on Mangold, the kitchen table was stacked with uniquely designed commemorative tiles for a girls’ school reunion in Komani. “We are very lucky here in Graaff-Reinet to source old oregon pine wood from builders. A local carpenter kindly planes them, after which they are framed so they can be hung on a wall. From plain ceramic item to beautifully crafted piece of art is a long and complicated manufacturing process which includes designing and drawing, computer graphics, silkscreening, kiln firing, hand painting and re-firing. “I use a specially imported ceramic onglaze,” Mangold said, admitting that her favourite part of the process was finally sitting down to printed items and doing hours and hours of hand painting. “I am inspired by ideas from overseas catalogues, and also enjoy designing my own unique

works. I like to be innovative and creative, and enjoy the freedom of creating larger works like murals,” she says. Mangold has worked with architects and interior designers to revamp a number of Sun International hotels in Swaziland and Lesotho. Nowadays her giftware sells well at various retail outlets, like Woodstock & Willow in Bedford, where her beautifully colourful, framed replica Turkish tiles are quite popular. The Waarehouse Arts and Crafts Gallery in Bathurst stocks Mangold’s equally popular range of Portuguese tiles and tea trays, and some weekends one can find her at the Graaff-Reinet Community Market. A typical artist, whose mind keeps racing with new ideas, Mangold whips out picture after picture of projects she hopes to tackle next. “I am a member of the Eastern Cape Potters Association, and hope to collaborate with some colleagues in future projects as well,” she says. Only one of 38: Aberdeens around the world REPORTER THE small Karoo town of Aberdeen is not the only town to be thus named: according to Wikipedia, there are 38 Aberdeens around the world, half of which are in the United States of America! The Karoo Aberdeen, founded in 1856, was named after the birthplace in Scotland of Rev Andrew Murray, minister in nearby Graaff-Reinet at the time. Jean Watermeyer, the chairperson of Aberdeen Tourism, is herself of Scottish descent, as her grandfather came to the area to open branches of the National Bank (later Barclays) in GraaffReinet. She has regular contact with officials from the town’s Scottish namesake, and without fail, sends a Christmas card to the Scottish town’s Lord Provost. “There have been a few interesting links in recent years between the Scottish town and its Karoo namesake,” said Jean. “One year, the British charity,

Shopmobility, sent small soft toys of Angus the bull and Donny the sheep, mascots of Aberdeen Football Club, to 22 of the Aberdeens around the world. “The aim was to encourage people to have pride in towns, and to share interesting facts about ‘their’ Aberdeen,” said Jean. The Karoo Angus attended a wedding (transported with the bride and groom in a pony and trap), a Christmas church service, a coffee morning at the book shop, and a Garden Club meeting, as well as meeting up with a little boy called Angus at Aberdeen Primary School. Another interesting connection was made when a daily newspaper in the Scottish town wrote a feature on how Christmas was celebrated in the different Aberdeens around the world. Rather than a standard “braai around the pool”, a South African answer, Aberdeen Tourism used a little creative licence and sent a photo of Father Christmas arriving at the book shop sale on

Guests at the book shop coffee morning, with the two soft toys, Angus and Donnie. a donkey cart. The Scottish paper used this as

their main feature photo, and only later were they told that the

G’n kans vir man om oupa se begrafnis by te woon

Meet the newly elected Inxuba Yethemba mayor

NETWERK24

WILNA DE KLERK

se is verbied.

By nadere ondersoek is vasgestel dat Vermaak se huis in ligte laaie is. By nadere ondersoek is bevind

INXUBA Yethemba’s newly elected mayor, Noncedo Zonke, is a well-known resident of Middelburg, where she taught at St Boniface Primary School for 16 years while also serving on various committees in town. Although she said that the election as mayor was a big surprise, she has been involved in committee work since the age of 18, when she was in Grade 12 at Healdtown High School in Fort Beaufort and became the leader and secretary of the ANC’s Congress of Student Organisations. Zonke, who lived with her grandparents at that stage, was detained in prison for four months in her matric year and as a result of this could not write her final school examination. After her release she joined her mother, a school teacher at Beaufort West, and passed matric there.a “After school I worked as a domestic servant for a Jewish family. After they heard my story, they helped me to continue my studies at Dr W.B. Rubasana College of Education, where I got my teacher’s diploma in 1993. At that time I was a full-time student who worked for the family during holidays,” she said. In 1994, Zonke started her teaching career in Middelburg, where she served the community in various ways. She was then deployed by the ANC to become speaker of IYM for three years before, again, being deployed by the ANC to become their

regional secretary from 2009 to 2014. “I applied to be director of youth development and mobilisation at the national Department of Social Development, where I worked until March 2019, when I applied to the Department of Integrated Planning and Economic Development, where I worked until I was elected mayor of IYM,” she said. During this time she went on various short courses, including a municipal finance programme and a course in executive leadership, at the University of Pretoria. “Being elected as mayor of IYM came as a surprise, but I did work for the ANC from a very young age,” she said. Her husband, also an IYM councillor, passed away in an accident a while ago and Zonke now lives with her four children and also looks after three of her deceased sister’s children and two of her deceased brother’s children. She has two grandchildren, who live with her. “Although my time in Cradock is short before the next election, I want to work to fix the farm roads and towards cleanliness of the dumping sites in Lingelihle and Michausdal. “My mission is also to renovate Cradock Spa to again attract tourists and improve the commonage for emerging farmers. “I am especially interested in youth and woman development and people with disabilities, but because of the coronavirus I will not be able to consult with them at the present time,” she said.

sente is belangrik, veral nou.

Maureen MacAndrew: Huge loss for Aberdeen community

Komani-Karoo Express

Aberdeen man (77) tests positive for Covid-19 REPORTER

REPORTER A HUGE sense of loss is felt in the Aberdeen community after the sad death of Maureen MacAndrew, who was synonymous with animal care in the town. Maureen worked tirelessly to help vulnerable animals, mostly dogs and cats from poorer households. Even though very few people paid anything towards treatment for their pets, she refused to see an animal suffer and often, at her own expense, she would take animals to the vets in Graaff-Reinet. She founded the Camdeboo Animal Rescue Enterprise (CARE) in 2014, and with a small group of volunteers arranged many sterilisation sessions, to try to curb the reckless breeding of cats and dogs, which if left unchecked would have led to more neglected and abused animals. She opened a charity shop and held events to raise funds, but there was never enough money to

care for all the animals. Often Maureen herself would do without, so that a dog or cat could have food. Maureen was diagnosed with cancer about four years ago and underwent treatment, but sadly she became increasingly frail in the last few months. Despite this, she still worried about the animals, and did as much as she could, helped by willing volunteers. She would never turn away a sick or injured animal, and was not afraid to reprimand irresponsible owners, for which she was greatly respected throughout the community. A memorial service was held last week at the Aberdeen Methodist Church, where many friends paid tribute to this humble lady who had enriched the lives of so many people.

A 77-YEAR-OLD Aberdeen man has tested positive for Covid-19. He returned home about three weeks ago from a countrywide tour with a group of 27 Canadian visitors, suffering from extreme exhaustion and generally feeling unwell. He visited his general practitioner and was prescribed two courses of antibiotics but after taking them, he still felt no better. At the beginning of last week he learnt that many members of the tour group had tested positive after their return to Canada, so he reported to Aberdeen Provincial Hospital. Due to his symptoms, and his exposure to people who had later tested positive for Covid-19, medical superintendent Dr Funani Desemele requested a test kit from Midland Hospital. As there are no quarantine facilities at the hospital, the man was sent home for total self-isolation while waiting for the results.

He has been monitored regularly by Dr Desemele, who has visited him every day to check for fever and other symptoms. Last Thursday, the hospital received the news that the patient had tested positive for Covid-19. One of his domestic workers has remained in isolation in the house, and the other two were screened by the doctor before being allowed to return to their homes. Several other members of the tour group had also been diagnosed as positive by this stage. The patient is extremely concerned that they may have infected others during their tour, despite scrupulous attention to sanitising procedures. He remains weak, but his condition has remained stable. He will be kept in isolation for the time being. The patient requested that his identity be withheld. According to Siyanda Manana, the Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, the patient has been transferred to a hospital in Port Elizabeth.

Rubriek: Gehok! WILNA DE KLERK “JY is gehok!” Woorde wat my baie jare terugneem na my skooldae in ’n baie streng meisieskool. Lees ook ’n lekker boek of twee, of drie of vier.

Kindness Like Confetti The PE branch of the Johannesburg-based NPO, Kindness Like Confetti, has been running in PE since February 2019. “We run various ongoing projects throughout the year,” said Margi Newton, from Kindness Like Confetti PE. Their knitting/crochet project in-

cludes the creation of the following items: ) Beanies – handed out to a cancer drive, homeless people, old age homes and prem- and newborn babies; ) Baby booties, knitted teddies and blankets; ) Jerseys – given to children in children’s homes and impoverished areas; ) Knee blankets – given to the aged and to a cancer drive; ) Scarves and gloves – handed out to aged and shelters for the homeless; ) ‘Twiddle Muffs’ – for dementia patients at old age homes.

“We have patterns for all of the above, but we welcome items made by knitters and crocheters using their own tried and trusted patterns,” Newton said. Owing to the lockdown, they are requesting that all completed items be kept at home until they can be either collected or taken to drop-off points.

GIFT of the Givers has handed over 300 blankets and 200 bottles of hand sanitiser to the Midland Hospital in Graaff-Reinet. With the influx of children, especially from the Western Cape and Gauteng, visiting senior family members in the Eastern Cape during the extended holidays, there is growing concern over the impact this will have on the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, CEO of Gift of the Givers, said that the foundation has made sufficient provision to intervene and assist hospitals in the Eastern Cape with the looming threat. This week, a disaster relief team of Gift of the Givers and JM Landmann drilling services in Bethlehem will be equipping three boreholes which were drilled earlier this month at Cebe

While the rest of the country was panicbuying and stockpiling this week, a drilling team of 16 men, led by hydrogeologist, Dr Gideon Groenewald, GOTG project manager, Ali Sably, and Corene Conradie, the organisation’s Eastern Cape coordinator, were locked in a race against time to supply the drought-stricken community and hospital of Cebe with water before lockdown kicked in on Thursday at midnight. “Water is the absolute first necessity when it comes to sanitation, and we are therefore committed to do whatever we can to provide in this basic need,” said Sablay. He also indicated that the drought intervention teams in Adelaide, Graaff-Reinet and Makhanda would, as disaster relief operations, be able to continue carting water to communities despite lockdown.

Fun activities for the family

South Africa is in lockdown because of the national state of disaster due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. So what can parents or caretakers do to keep their children busy during the ‘holiday’ to make sure they still do some learning, while having fun? The KOMANI-KAROO EXPRESS is here to help with a few activities and learning. Have fun!

Turn busy young minds into busy bees at home REPORTER THERE is a saying that has become truly profound in 2020: “Expect the unexpected. Believe in the unbelievable. Achieve the unachievable.” As the world is faced with the devastation that is Covid-19, one thing is becoming very clear – self-isolation could well stop this highly contagious virus in its tracks. But how do we keep our kids positively engaged during this time?

At READ Educational Trust, they believe the key is to keep enquiring young minds active! For this reason, READ Educational Trust has given parents and children across South Africa access to a series called Busy ‘B’ Home Activities, during the period of mandatory lockdown. Available through links on all their websites and social media pages, the Busy ‘B’ Series is set to help parents keep their children positively engaged at home! Best of all? Every activity is 100% free.

Who is it for? READ caters for children from Grade 4 through to high school. Types of activities include a self-discovery game to stimulate conversation and set imaginations alive; a newspaper race game (great to use the PE Express!); treasures in our lives (encouraging gratitude in our children), and people we treasure; and many more. All the Busy ‘B’ activities are sourced from their hugely successful Readathon Red Reading Box series. Released annually for

the past seven years, the Red Reading Boxes are filled with activities, games and stories to encourage reading skills and literacy. For those parents who would like to find out more about the Red Reading Box series, go to https://thereadshop.co.za/, where they may be purchased. With every literacy product purchased, 100% of profits will be used by READ to further their literacy promotion in disadvantaged communities. ) Visit http://www.read.org.za/busy-beehome-activities/ to download the activities.

Teach children value of working Do home schooling with these resources for money with this fun activity WHY not start home schooling your children to make sure they don’t fall behind with the school curriculum? Here are some very resourceful websites you or your children can use during the lockdown period:

TANYA VAN ZYL I CAME across a cute activity to do with my daughter, Emily (6), during the lockdown period. It was sent to me by my sister, who has also implemented this with her two kids (10 and 3). It teaches them a great value – how to work for money. But for this game, you don’t need to use real money (we’d be broke after the first day!). Rather use something like Monopoly money. If you don’t have Monopoly, you can draw your own money on a piece of paper. First, they receive a list of chores they need to do around the house (clean their room, read a book) and next to the chore you write how much money they will earn if they complete this task. V You can also deduct money for naughty behaviour like being rude or throwing tantrums! Next, you compile a list of all the items or activities they can “buy”. Whether it is chips, chocolate, juice or watching television, they need to pay. V Limit them on the number of times they are allowed to buy these “snacks” as you don’t want unhealthy or sick kids. V Healthy food and water are free, of course. When they have completed a task on the list, they get paid the corresponding amount for the “work” they did. And then they can do their “shopping”. This is really a great game to play. The little ones can’t wait to do their chores to

The ‘tuck shop’ prices. get paid and shop, but it also teaches them that nothing in life is free; you need to work hard for your money. Also you need to work smart with your money – if it’s done, it’s done . . . then you need to work some more! And it’s no coincidence that reading and doing some school work pays the most.

‘Stay fit for when season reopens’ THANDO MGEDEZI THE former Chris Hani District Soccer U19 captain, who now plays for ABC Motsepe League side Amavarara FC, Athenkosi Lafota, says it is important for players to keep up their fitness levels during the national lockdown. Soccer players around the country have been training on their own since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the state of disaster last week and will continue to do so in the 21 days of the national lockdown. Lafota has been a pillar of strength in the Amavarara team, playing a vital part in their great form in the Nedbank Cup and the league this season. The 21-year-old winger also won the man of the match award in their last 32 Nedbank Cup win against Free State’s Super Eagles FC in East London. Lafota has urged players in the ABC Motsepe League and the SAB

Regional League to stick to their training indoor programmes dur-

ing the 21-day lockdown to stay fit and healthy. An issue of ill-discipline in the ABC Motsepe League is still a big problem, with coaches regularly dealing with alcohol abuse and other off-field worries. We all know this is not a normal situation we are in at the moment‚ so I am expecting players to take full responsibility and look after themselves. “They must stay fit and be ready to return to action when it is decided the league is going to resume‚” said the Molteno-born player. Amavarara are currently in sixth place on the log with 35 points - 12 points behind log leaders Bizana Pondo Chiefs - and have a game in hand. The Chris Hani District-based side was last in action on March 14, when they beat Mthatha Bucks 4-1 in the league here in Komani. ‘Varara’ would have faced Highbury FC three days later, but SAFA EC then announced the suspension of all football games in the province.

Old Collegians cancel preseason friendlies THANDO MGEDEZI KOMANI-BASED rugby club Old Collegians RFC has cancelled their last three of the traditional annual preseason friendlies matches because of the coronavirus crisis. There were five planned preseason friendlies for the side and they only played two games against one of the oldest rugby clubs in the region, Flamingo from Ezibeleni and a visiting team from Adelaide, Wild Boys. They won both matches, beating Flamingo 31-19, while narrowly winning 19-17 against Adelaide side. Both games were played at the Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre in Komani.

Club chairperson Maxwell Levine said, “We had a clear preseason program with matches against Hibernians (Burgersdorp), Shining Stars and EUR Africans (Aliwal North). “These friendlies were cancelled, but it is a clear indication as how seriously we take our preparation for the upcoming season.” The side has struggled in recent years and no longer takes part in the Border Premier League after being relegated last season. The rugby side was preparing for their season in the Sub Union First Division to start next month. “Our mission and mandate is clear, we want to win all our matches and qualify for the play-offs and, from

there, gain promotion back to the Border Premier League,” said Levine. “The break will definitely affect our form, but remember we are all affected by this. So mentally and physically we have to find a way of hitting the ground running. “But first priority now is the health and safety of every player. Rugby is secondary to that as a person’s life has more value,” said Levine. The Chris Hani District had three rugby teams that were playing in the Border Rugby Leagues, but after Old Collegians were relegate, the district was left with two teams, Shining Stars and Breakers, competing in the Border Premier League and Border Super League respectively.
