TRANSFORMER IN FLAMES: RESIDENTS QUEUE FOR PARAFFIN
Power problems worsen SANELE JAMES
E
LECTRICITY problems have gone from bad to worse in Komani and surrounding areas after a transformer burst into flames at the Ebden Substation on Tuesday morning resulting in a power outage. The transformer blew at about 09:00 and the power was not restored for the whole of Tuesday or the early hours of Wednesday. The damage to the transformer and what caused it to blow is not known yet. But there have been ongoing untimely outages in the past weeks which the municipality attributed to overloading on the power grid as a result of excessive power usage. Another transformer blew earlier this year and since then it has not yet been repaired. It is not clear when the Ebden one will be fixed. Municipal spokesperson, Fundile Feketshane, said the institution’s electricians were still assessing the situation and would comment after they had given a full report. On Tuesday afternoon scores of residents rushed to form long queues at paraffin trading stores in preparation of the unknown as they were in the dark as to when the power would be restored. By Tuesday evening other traders had already inflated their prices of the suddenly in demand commodity from R10 to R12 per litre. This is happening at a time when learners in various institutions of learning are sitting for their midyear examinations. Weeks ago, residents lived in fear that Eskom would interrupt its supply of bulk electricity to the municipality due to a multimillion bill the municipality owes to the power generator.
Chairperson of the Komani-Border Kei Chamber of Business, AdrĂŠ Bartis, who sat in a meeting with the
municipal officials on Tuesday said the municipality had contracted electricians from East London to try
to resolve the issue speedily. At 17:44 Bartis confirmed that the contractor was on site and left to re-
