ISLAND GOLF GAZETTE

30 AUGUST 2024

We all know there is only ever one winner, so there must be plenty of learning happening out on those fairways.

With more daylight creeping into our days, there's more time to ‘educate’ yourself on the golf course... Island golf is waiting for you.

Clubhouse Hours

Open from 7:30 AM Daily

Tee times are available from 7:15 am until 5:00 pm

What a fantastic weekend of g

congratulations to Josh Mastin who is our Club Champion for 2024

Congratulations to our other winning members - Barry Gladman (B Grade); Peter Mcsween (C Grade); and Tony Graham (D Grade). How lucky were we to get the Championships played before the weather turned foul!

Some of you may have noticed a change in one of the colour markers in the tee boxes. In 2022 Golf Australia encouraged golf clubs and facilities to scrap their gender rating of tees. It was decided at the last committee meeting to align the club with this idea and use the colours in our emblemblack, blue, yellow and white to reduce stigma around tee selection For golfers who tend to play the same course over and over, playing various tees will add excitement to the game Why not give it a try? Playing from a different meterage creates different approach distances, allowing you to see other parts of the course and a different challenging golf experience Don’t forget your handicap changes according to the tee

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Match committee as we have been planning for next year. Just some of the things that have been included/changed are the men’s and ladies championships will be held concurrently in August; and we will be holding a 9 hole summer competition on Monday mornings for the months of February and March. I hope that everyone enjoys the syllabus that has been developed and the different conditions of play that we have included.

Good luck to our team playing in the Lonsdale Links Challenge Bowl on Monday!

See you on the green! Barb

PLAYING THROUGH NATURE’S CHAOS...

Our island may have some of the most spectacular views to offer on a golf course. But when the tide is high and we receive terrible winds our golf course suffers.

This week was one of those weeks. Saltwater all over the course in areas we do not want it to be. Fairways such as 11 and 12 were underwater and even rising to halfway up the 15th fairway. Wetland areas that don’t usually hold water are now full. Tree damage and debris throughout the course as well as sea grass to where the water had risen to.

Part of a tree on the 6th broke off during the strong winds Wednesday night. The rest of the tree was then removed due to being rotted out on the inside. This was to be considered dangerous if we left the remains of the tree. Currently, it is ACC and we have put a quick dirt mound over the existing stump until we stump grind and finish that area off properly.

More strong winds are expected Friday with more tidal damage forecasted on the island. So apologies for any inconvenience to your golf due to these issues.

LIFE'S A BEACH... AND THEN THERE'S ISLAND GOLF

With the wild weather this week, you might come across a few “abnormal course conditions” (ACC) which may include ground under repair (GUR) due to tree maintenance or temporary water lying where it doesn’t usually lie. The question is - when can you take relief without penalty? The rule states...

The diagram assumes the player is right-handed Free relief is allowed for interference by an abnormal course condition (ACC), including an immovable obstruction, when the ball touches or lies in or on the condition (B1), or the condition interferes with the area of intended stance (B2) or swing.

The nearest point of complete relief for B1 is P1, and is very close to the condition. For B2, the nearest point of complete relief is P2, and is farther from the condition as the stance has to be clear of the ACC

EXCUSE ME, IS THAT ETIQUETT

You are allowed free relief from an abnormal course condition when you have interference from such a condition anywhere on the course, except when the ball is in a penalty area or when the abnormal course condition is out of bounds.

Interference exists when any one of these is true:

Talking to someone else’s ball... we’re all guilty of this one at some point, right?

I’m sure you’ve heard your mate say, “Come on, keep going.” as you cut your drive toward the fairway.

Cheering on someone else’s ball is sometimes seen as a nice gesture, after all, it’s nice to know your buddy is invested in your round. But in top competitions, that doesn’t fly.

Maybe, you give someone a thumbs up if they’ve hit one close when you are up at the green, or you can say “Nice shot”, although even this doesn’t happen much in high-level competition. Tour Players tend to stay in their bubble.

Basically, competitive players want to talk to their own ball or have no one else talking to it.
