Winner's Podium What’s On

Autumn is the time for seed germination so we are taking full advantage. Our damaged areas that keep needing re-turfing every few years on the 1st and 4th green have now been levelled and over-sowed with pencross bentgrass seed This is the original species of bentgrass in our greens
Why do these areas on these two greens struggle every year? It is because these sections are full of tree roots from the Moonah trees left of 1st and 4th Have a look at how these Moonah trees are growing, right next to the low-lying wetland full of saltwater-affected soil The roots are running up into our green searching for moisture and more desirable soil.

In April 2023 we dug out 300-400mm of tree roots and soil in these areas, installed root guards and filled back up with fresh sand and bent grass sods. I believed this could have resolved the issue in these areas for some time, but it hasn’t worked as planned. So now we have decided to over-sow these areas. This may have to be an annual practice we do in these trouble areas.
Please keep any traffic off these areas and respect the rope This area is marked ACC
Happy Golfing, Jake

OUT & ABOUT

Snapped... club members, Tom Warren, Neil Petrie, Brad Teal and Len Aylward enjoying a glorious day playing a round at the Barwon Head Golf Club. Barwon Heads was recently voted Australian Golf Digest’s “2025 Best Golf Town in Australia” - read about it here on pg.110. It must be its proximity to Queenscliff that gave it the winning edge.

The fourth week of Men’s Pennant was hard fought with the Division 3 team having a win against Lorne at Queens Park while Handicap East had a close loss to Lonsdale Links at St Leonard’s. This now puts us in a very strong position to make the final in Division 3 while the Handicap East team will have to win their last two matches to have a chance of finals.
We can take a lot of pride in the presentation of our course after the visit to Queens Park this week. We fronted a course with greens that hadn’t been cut and holes not changed for quite some time. Hard work all around.
We will be hosting Division 3 and Handicap East pennant this week and will ensure our visitors are met with cut greens, new cut holes and raked bunkers. Hopefully, it will be a memorable experience for the right reason.

QGC are hosting Division 3 & Handicap East Pennant Competition, Sunday 13 April. Note: The Course is Closed for Social Golf until After 1:00 PM
