ISLAND GOLF GAZETTE

FROM BARB LUPPINO

Hi everyone,

intentions for the club for the coming year will not differ greatly from those drew’s captain’s year. My focus will remain on this golf club and making improvements where necessary. However, I will be completing lots of work the scenes documenting policy, roles and responsibilities and strategy governance for all club events. This will ensure there is transparency and provide succession planning for all.

Well done to the team of Lorna Lawson, Angela Fooks and myself who competed in the Inverleigh Challenge Bowl last Friday. It was a fun day, unfortunately Lorna and I found the sand scrapes a little challenging and could not support Angela’s great round.

Don’t forget to spread the word about our next ‘Gals on the Green’ golf clinic with Mark Delaney in September. This is going to be a great opportunity for ladies to have focused instruction, gain feedback and have guidance of a skilled professional in a relaxed and social manner.

Coming up on Friday is The Golden Putter, now in its 44th year. This prestigious event was created to encourage women to participate in club competitions. With actual gold putters presented to the winning team, this event is highly regarded and a much anticipated social occasion. I am sure it is going to be a fantastic day for all.

We’ll done to the leaders in the first round of the club championships, played in near perfect weather conditions on Saturday

Good luck to all those competing championships this weekend. With expect we will see some great scores.

See you on the green, Barb

Congratulations ANGELA FOOKS

for a fantastic win in the Inverliegh GC Open, C Division

TO SUBMIT OR NOT TO SUBMIT...

Everyone has a bad round now and then for any number of reasons, but when is it OK not to submit a Competition Score?

The Official Rules of Golf cover this in Rule 7.1b(i), which states reasons for not submitting a score should not includeForgetfulness; Circumstances preventing the timely submission of score, for example access to Clubhouse or power cut.

When one or more holes have not been played for a valid reason (see Rule 3.2).

Preventing a low score from causing a Handicap Index to decrease.

Preventing a high score from causing a Handicap Index to increase.

EXCUSE ME, IS THAT ETIQUETTE OR A RULE... ?

Whilst we're far from playing the PGA Tour circuit, there's still a maze of unwritten "rules” known as Golf Etiquette that players are expected to follow - courtesy of Sean Fairholm from mygolfspy.com

One of the first rules of etiquette you learn as a golfer is to not step on another player’s line.

Since any imperfections in the green can be fixed, this rule doesn’t hold a ton of practical weight anymore. It’s more of a respect thing. Chewing up someone’s line is a little like ripping the Velcro off your glove in the middle of someone’s backswing.

Someone’s line is generally the path the ball will travel from its start position to the hole. For high-level competition, that line extends past the hole to the possible comeback putt, referred to as the “through line.” If someone has a 12m putt, you should avoid walking on the exact opposite side of the hole within about 4m or so. Generally, the expectation for Tour Players is to stay out of the way.

Again, this carried more weight back when you couldn’t fix spike marks or other bumps. It’s more about respect than anything tangible.

BUNKER ACTION...

The past week we have been blessed with some nice weather reaching 20 degrees with sunshine. The weekend for the first round of club championships was picturesque. This weekend could be a different story, with some showers predicted and low temperatures. Our course is showing some real early signs of drying out, so we will take any rain we can with open arms.

ON THE HUNT...

Between our busy maintenance and mowing schedule, we continued to upgrade the playability of some of our worst bunkers.

The 7th bunkers are now complete and back in play. This week we tackled the two right hand bunkers on the 14th. Both of these bunkers were raised around 300-500mm. More bunkers to be improved in the near future.

Good luck to anyone who is competing in the 2nd round of the club championships.

Jake

This little guy is rarely seen - they live in low scrublands, shore heathlands and salt marshes as well as grassy areas and, not surprisingly, they love golf courses. The Orange-bellied Parrot is critically endangered but Swan Island is one of its favourite haunts. We haven't seen them in a while so, if you do snap a photo and share!

Thank you to those who brought to our attention the issues with the restroom at the 14th hole.

Jake has finally discovered the main culprit is an underground leak in the water tank. This is causing the secondary problem of a squishy puddle around the tap. Hence the tank valve has been shut off for the time being.

Unfortunately, this means the toilet will be out of order for this week whilst a solution is underway.

We apologise for the temporary inconvenience.
