ISLAND GOLF GAZETTE

NOVEMBER
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE
Now, I’m not insinuating anything like this happens on the island, but club member, Tom Freeman, recently shared this joke with me and I thought it might make you chuckle... or think twice.
A group of golfers were searching the rough for one of their balls After a few minutes of searching, the golfer who sliced his ball into the undergrowth called out he had found his ball. He’s a cheat calls back one of the others The other golfers gather around That’s a pretty serious accusation you’re making Why do you say he’s a cheat? Because I’ve got his ball here in my pocket!

LET’S SHARE

Welcome to this week’s edition of our newsletter! As the year progresses, I am always excited to share updates, upcoming events, and highlights from recent rounds.
We had over 100 players enjoying a Stableford round on beautiful sunny Saturday. Congratulations to Bryan Mcleod, Daniel Treloar and Peter Crossett - who all came in with scores of 40 and above. For the remainder of the field, the results were tight and places were hotly contested with 79 count backs required! Then a wet and windy Wednesday saw 61 compete in Par with great results for Darren Belsar, Anthony Webber and Gerry Vipond. Well done!
The 57th National Championship for the Lefties Golf Association was a great success with all the players complimenting us on the organisation and the course. Whilst this event did affect green fee players and the women’s competition it was a great advertisement for our club with many players vowing to return.
The Match committee met this week Some of the issues we are trying to resolve include the grade divisions (especially on a Saturday); improving the syllabus for 2025 to include some fun events such as Gentsomes or Green Keepers developing signal for safety and communication

The past few weeks have been very busy on the course. With public holidays, golf events and influx of golfers due to the nicer weather. It is great for the club to see the car park full on most days of the week.

Our maintenance is in full swing with mowing and lots of watering. The course is drying out quicker than we can keep up with using impact sprinklers on the ends of the hoses. We have been planning what we can do for our fairways to keep somewhat of a green tinge through summer. Our course is very unique from other golf courses in the area, as we don’t have fairway irrigation (sprinklers) and we use town water ($$$).
One idea put forward was the project of turning our old and unused spray tank into a “water truck” to irrigate our fairways. We thought it definitely worth a try, so we got straight to work.
The rear sprayers are pressurised in 40mm PVC with a 1-inch hose from the pump. We created nozzles using poly caps, drilling and filing them down until all 4 were uniform and spraying correctly.
The tank hasn’t been out for its maiden voyage yet as we still have a few things to finalise. But we tested the rear sprayers off our old fishmouth tank pump and it works!
We can’t wait to see if this helps out on the fairways. This has been an ideal project for us with the shotgun start events creating time to work on it during the morning.
Happy Golfing, Jake
