Renovation week has arrived!
This week we did our annual renovations on our greens.
This year we chose the scarifying method to remove the thatch in our greens. For the last 4 years, we had previously hired contractors to come and core our greens. Each year we had problems with turf lifting or other issues that arose during the process.
As most of you will remember, last year the damage on our greens required us to re-turf areas due to machine failure. These areas are still recovering.
This season, pivoting to a scarify made our renovation process move along a lot smoother, with the recovery time expected for the greens to be significantly quicker.
An average of 2 workmen loads full of thatch was pulled from each green (check the photo). We went aggressive with the depth of the scarify blade but without causing any destruction. This process has saved the club money by keeping it in-house, using our staff and the club's equipment.
Moving forward we plan on rotating between coring and scarifying in future years.
Happy Golfing. Jake
'scarify’... to break up and loosen soil to a shallow depth; to scratch or abrade the surface to increase water absorption or hasten germination
How's your rules knowledge?...
How's your rules knowledge?...
Whilst ‘Golf Etiquette’ is considered a series of unwritten rules, the Official Rules of Golf are clear about the central principles of the game in “Rule 1: The Game, Player Conduct and the Rules” Essentially, it’s a game where playing in the spirit of the game, acting with integrity, and showing consideration to others and to the course are paramount at all times Keep this front of mind and you can count yourself a winner every time you play!
It's a clever trick to use your putter to take your ball out of the hole... but should you?
It's considered a bad habit and not great etiquette to retrieve your ball from the hole with a golf club.
Please don't as it could damage the hole's edges or even the cup itself.
If you're someone who disregards this and think it's not a big deal, I'm sure you'll think again when your birdie shot falls fowl to the edges of a damaged cup.

The Correct Answer is A: No penalty applies as the player removes the putter from the anchor point during their backswing and continues the stroke with the club no longer anchored See Rule 10 1b A player must not anchor the club in making a Stroke, which is the forward movement of the club made to strike the ball.
The Correct Answer is B: In match play, the player loses the hole if they mark the position of their ball on the putting green lifts the ball and sets it aside and, by mistake, they putt the ball from the spot where it was aside See Clarification 14 4/1 and Rule 6 3c The ball was lifted and set aside without the intent for it to be put back In Play When the player made a stroke at the ball which was out of play, they played a wrong ball and the penalty in match play is loss of hole
The Correct Answer is C: No penalty is applied if a ball played from the putting green is seen to strike a worm before being holed. See Rule 11.1b(2). There is no penalty and as the ball hits an animal that is defined as a loose impediment, the ball is played as lies and in this case is holed
