ISLAND GOLF GAZETTE

Our Gals on the Green golf clinic teed off yesterday as the sun did its best to dispel the clouds and threatening rain. Mark Delaney from Barwon Heads Golf Club patiently took the first-timers through putting drills, imparting some pure gems to help them line up the perfect shot Island golf is

Whilst it could be said that playing golf in wild and stormy weather is an exhilarating challenge, my resilience was certainly tested this week I don’t mind a bit of rain but that howling wind turned the course into a battleground and drove me indoors. It was a good opportunity to complete some paperwork on Roles and Responsibilities; and start to create templates of both the history and the course conditions for the various events we hold. These documents are vital for continuity and succession planning.

Unfortunately, the weather has played havoc with our course - the king tides have really saturated the grass with salt water Jake and his wonderful team will have their work cut out for them trying to restore it

Another exciting innovation we are going to trial is an ‘Off Season’ membership starting in October This 5-month membership will be offered to the active members of sporting clubs in our region Initially, we will target the football and netball players, gradually incorporating other sports such as soccer and hockey.

It was great to see so many women taking part in the ‘Gals on the Green’ coaching clinic. And for our playing members we have organised 2 options - play 9 holes in the morning to be back to take part in a ½ hr lesson. Or an 18-hole comp with a SGS. Then lunch together in the clubhouse….a great way to meet everyone.

It was unfortunate for our 3 ladies that due to the weather, the Lonsd cancelled and cannot be rescheduled

See you on the green, Barb

RECOVERY AFTER THE STORM...

Most of you are now aware of the devastating saltwater damage to our fairways caused by the high tides.

It’s hard to accept the damage when we had the fairways in a good position coming into spring/summer. Moving forward we have actions in place to give these affected areas the best possible chance to recover.

Our main focus is flushing the soil free from excess sodium levels and chloride in the tips of the leaf of the turf. As well as getting the correct nutrients back into the soil and plant. We have products coming in the next week to put these plans into action.

Keeping all vehicles and traffic to a bare minimum in the affected areas is key to their recovery.

So thanks to you all for your cooperation and understanding of this setback. We will move forward from this and continue pushing the course standards.

Thanks,

YES... OR NO???

What happens when you don’t have access to the Rules app on your phone or an official is not handy to make a ruling... how good is your grasp of what’s allowed and what isn’t?

Test your knowledge about some potentially confusing but not uncommon situations... You’re about to tee off and you notice the grounds crew forgot to re-insert one of the two tee markers for the tees you were planning to hit from. So you pick it up, estimate where it should go based on the other marker, place it down and tee off. Are you allowed to do that? Yes or No?

2. Your ball is sitting atop some reeds in a penalty area. You’re going to play it but first you take some practice swings a few feet to the side of the ball to see how your iron cuts through the reeds. In doing so, you damage some of them. Are you allowed to do that? Yes or No?

4.

You hit a ball into the trees and don’t feel like searching for it. You reload and hit another shot down the middle of the fairway and start walking. When you get up to your second ball, you see that your first is clearly visible and you decide, since it’s within three minutes of search time, to go chip that original ball back into play and pocket your second ball. Are you allowed to do that? Yes or No?

3 Your putting has been horrible. Upon making the turn, you stop at the practice putting green between the ninth and 10th holes and hit a few putts to work on your stroke before catching up with your group as it’s about to tee off. Are you allowed to do that? Yes or No?

Whilst we're far from playing the PGA Tour circuit, there's still a maze of unwritten "rules” known as Golf Etiquette that players are expected to follow - courtesy of Sean Fairholm from mygolfspy.com

Tapping sand out of your shoes before walking on a green.

After a Tour player has hit a bunker shot, the first thing they do upon exiting the bunker is to tap out the sand from their shoes. This is so they don’t walk sand all over the green which would make putting more difficult.

You may notice sand splashed all over the green and, with the strong winds of the past week, you may notice a little more sand than usual outside of the bunkers. But, sometimes sand on the green results from the actual bunker shot OR most likely it’s because people are walking with sand still lodged in the soles of their shoes.

In the big league tournaments, someone is responsible for removing the sand from the greens between groups. Unfortunately, this won’t happen for you on the Island...
