ISLAND GOLF GAZETTE

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BASE...

The 9th tee is getting closer to finishing. This week we received our delivery of Santa Anna turf and layed it on the tee top, after levelling and applying starter fertiliser and organics under the sods. The front half of the 9th tee also got to be re turfed with Santa Anna which was previously Kikuyu, to complete the whole 9th tee area as it didn’t look finished.

We also installed all the correct irrigation needed for the tee. The sprinkler heads are set up in a zig-zag pattern to guarantee even coverage without wind affecting it.

The final finishing touches such as planting native grasses and tussocks, finishing the backfill of trenches, re-laying the turf on the trench lines and top dressing the tee will be continuing in the next week. The staff and I are looking forward to seeing the progress as it's all coming along.

Next week we will be doing our annual greens renovations. This year we are scarifying with our new thatch-a-way heads. This is exactly what our greens need as I have been very happy with the playability and health of our greens. When we take plugs from our greens you can still see our core holes filled with sand from previous years.

This weekend the greens could be a bit slow as we have the moisture higher in the soil coming into renovations next week for a healthy recovery.

With the course closed on Monday and Tuesday, we will be taking full advantage and spraying broadleaf weeds. A second wave of weeds germinating on the course has hit us and haven’t been able to spray because all our attention was on the 9th tee project.

The fairways affected by the saltwater flooding are recovering nicely. We are confident most of these areas will recover to at least 95%. The combination of getting the correct nutrients back into the soil, aerating and the warmer weather has really boosted the growth of the Santa Anna.

Whilst ‘Golf Etiquette’ is considered a series of unwritten rules, the Official Rules of Golf are clear about the central principles of the game in “Rule 1: The Game, Player Conduct and the Rules” Essentially, it’s a game where playing in the spirit of the game, acting with integrity, and showing consideration to others and to the course are paramount at all times. Keep this front of mind and you can count yourself a winner every time you play!

Tradition dictates the pin should be taken out when putting, but COVID saw a change with golfers at all levels leaving the pin in.

What side of the pin are you on? IN or OUT??.
