MARCH 2024

From the Clubhouse

Congratulations to both pennant teams for beginning the tournament with wins and good luck with round 2 this weekend We are sure you will enjoy reading Richards full report. Loving the Team shirts too!

The long dry spell continues, and we ask that all Members remain mindful of the need to keep practice rounds to only playing one ball The turf on the fairways, although dry and browned off, is still alive and healthy The Course Team is doing their best to keep it this way and we ask all Members to help this effort

The Clubhouse has recently advertised for 2 casual positions We are on the lookout for:

Bar/Golf casual Position

Sandwich artist/Kitchen casual Position (Must be available to work Wednesday, Weekends and Holidays)

If you know of anyone who may be interested please encourage them to email their resume to Rob or to call him at the club.

Have a great weekend & Happy Golfing!

The Course Report.....

This week we had an irrigation fitting crack cause a major breakage at the back of the 13th green The result of this was a flowing river all the way down towards the new path (See photo) We were lucky this happened early Monday morning so we didn’t lose too much costly water. It’s now been repaired and the irrigation is back on

The 13th path works are still underway The old path has now been re mounded with soil and Santa Ana turf has been layed (See photo) Native coastal plants will be planted along the rest of the path to make it more natural Look forward to seeing progress as this path gets closer to being complete.

Despite the fairways and the rough being dry, we are in belief that the course is playing well and still holding up without rain. We have had 2mm of rain since January 18th February had a total of 0mm We have been trying to water the hitting areas on fairways with impact sprinklers on the ends of hoses, between completing these small construction jobs (1st mound and 13th path)

The greens have been staying at a consistent moisture level as we have been taking readings of each green with our moisture meter This gives us the information we need to know about which greens need more water than others

Hope everyone has a great weekend golfing out on the course

Our Moonah’s

A mononymous person is famous enough to be known by only one name

Most of us never quite rise to these dizzy heights though locally our friends and colleagues may know us by our nick name (Mocca, Muzza, Phonze.....) Some modern mononymous people you will know are Madonna, Prince, Fergie If we go back in time you will have no doubt heard of Napoleon, Rembrandt and Plato. In the botanical world there is only one plant that I know that is universally known by a single common name and that is Moonah, Melaleuca lanceolata.

When it’s an old tree it is likely to be over 5 m tall with a greater spread, its ancient branches often resting on the ground Its most distinguishing feature is its twisted and gnarled limbs and like other paperbarks you will see layers of grey bark peeling off, providing perfect nest building materials for birds and mammals alike Moonah’s bushy habit also make it a safe and protected environment to build a nest and find shelter.
