NOTES FROM THE HROA PRESIDENT

GIVING HARMONY BACK TO ITS RESIDENTS: A Look at the HROA Board of Directors and Their Vision

Since its appointment on October 1, the Harmony Residential Owners Association (HROA) Board of Directors has been hard at work rekindling the sense of community that drew so many residents to Harmony in the first place. This board, made up entirely of passionate, volunteer residents, has already made significant strides in both practical governance and community spirit. Their mantra is clear and heartfelt: “Give Harmony back to its residents.”

Bringing Meetings Home

One of the very first decisions made by the new board was to move meetings back to Harmony. Previous meetings required residents and board members to travel over seven miles to a ranch outside of town—an inconvenient and costly location. The board secured a new venue right in the heart of Harmony’s Town Square. Not only is it more accessible, but it also offers a more spacious and cost-effective setting.

The Return of Community Events

With the holidays fast approaching last year, the board quickly turned its attention to reviving cherished traditions. One of the biggest victories came with the return of Winterfest, a beloved event that had been shelved in recent years due to supposed insurance constraints. The board pushed back, insisting that proper insurance coverage could be secured—and they were right. Winterfest made its comeback, reigniting a joyful and nostalgic energy throughout the neighborhood.

Empowering Residents Through a Volunteer Social Committee

Winterfest’s success sparked momentum. In a bold step toward community empowerment and fiscal responsibility, the board voted to form a resident-led social committee. This volunteer group now oversees Harmony’s events and has already saved the community over $11,000 annually. Their focus? Creating inclusive, fun, and engaging activities for residents of all ages.

Some early wins include the return of the Harmony Home of the Month—with winners receiving a $100 gift certificate to a locally owned landscape center—and the revitalization of the Harmony Welcoming Committee, which greets new homeowners with swag bags filled with goodies and helpful information. Residents interested in volunteering with the social committee can email harmonysocialcommittee@outlook.com and should watch for opportunities to apply to join the committee later this year.

Common-Sense Policy Updates and Resident-Focused Amendments

This board believes in thoughtful oversight, not unnecessary regulation. A perfect example is the change in trash can violation inspections. Previously done the day after pickup, many residents were penalized before having time to store their bins. The board moved the inspection day—and violations dropped significantly. Harmony’s residents care about their community, and a little consideration goes a long way.

Clarifying Dark Sky Standards and Lighting

Questions about Harmony’s Dark Sky policy have circulated recently. To clarify: Dark Sky is here to stay. It’s written into the community’s governing documents and cannot be removed. However, a recent amendment brought clarity and flexibility regarding soffit lighting (often referred to as year-round holiday lighting). Now, homeowners can enjoy tasteful lighting options, provided they adhere to aesthetic and Dark Sky compliance standards.

Flags and Basketball Hoops: Balancing Freedom and Harmony’s Look

Other amendments have also been made with thoughtful attention to both creative freedom and community appearance. The board addressed inconsistencies in flag policies, ensuring residents can proudly fly flags while maintaining Harmony’s visual appeal.

And when it comes to basketball hoops, a long-standing issue was resolved with empathy and practicality. Instead of requiring residents to hide heavy, temporary hoops after each use, the board now allows permanently installed hoops. Temporary hoops are still allowed but must be stored out of sight when not in use.

A Call to Participate

The HROA board members are your neighbors—volunteers who donate their time to serve the community they love. While social media may seem tempting for airing concerns, the board encourages in-person dialogue at their quarterly meetings, which are open to the public and now conveniently held in Harmony. For help between meetings, Association Solutions, the contracted management company, is available to assist. You can contact them at info@myhoasolution.com or call (407) 8472280. If your issue requires further attention, a member of the board is always willing to listen and assist.

UPCOMING EVENT

FISHING IN HARMONY DID YOU KNOW?

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony's natural areas? Underlying these objectives are the values of fostering a respect for the land, the protection of wildlife and the sensible use and enjoyment of Harmony's abundant natural and manmade amenities by its residents.

One of the ways Harmony provides opportunities to interact with wildlife is through providing places for fishing, such as the Buck Lake docks, the boats (including pontoon boats, canoes, and fishing kayaks) that residents can take out onto the lake, and the fishing platform at the end of one of the boardwalks from around Long Pond. Our lakes have a long history of being fished by Native Americans, early European settlers, and more recently by folks from all around Central Florida attracted to the pristine quality and undeveloped beauty of our lakes. A few Harmony residents have sometimes offer fishing how-to events; if you are interested, please use one of Harmony’s Facebook pages to request that such an event be scheduled.

Do be aware that any and all fishing requires barbless hooks, because most of the fish species are catch-and-release, and barbed hooks cause much more serious injuries to the fish reducing their likelihood of survival once you throw them back in. Florida Fish and Wildlife fishing regulations can be found at http://myfwc.com/fishing/freshwater/regulations/. The FWC officers do visit our ponds and lakes.

When you are out fishing and enjoying Harmony’s wonderful natural endowments, please be careful with your supplies and equipment, especially weights, bobbers, and especially fishing line. Animals, especially birds and turtles, entangled in fishing line can suffer from a variety of problems; the restricted ability to move can lead to drowning or starvation, vulnerability to predators, infections and even limb amputation as the animal struggles against the line. A few years ago a Sand Hill Crane was seen on the golf course with fishing line tangled around its legs, a heartbreaking sight. One way that Harmony endeavors to help residents manage their fishing line is through our fishing line recycling containers (one near the entrance to Buck Lake, the other on the fishing platform off the Long Pond boardwalk), so please collect your used fishing line and deposit it into these receptacles.

If you use sinkers, jigs, or weights, please make sure they do not contain lead, a known toxin that affects all wildlife. A brief brochure about the hazards and alternatives is available through FWC at http://www. fws.gov/contaminants/documents/leadpoisoning2.pdf

Use care if you decide to fish in an area not specifically designed for fishing and where you will be less protected, such as the edge of a pond, as alligators are attracted to movement at the edge of and in the water (such as a fish wriggling at the end of a line). An alligator that becomes attracted to people due to fishing activity is a dead alligator, as it will quickly be reported, removed, and killed. Also, be aware that while the first few feet of pond edge are shallow, the bottom quickly drops off steeply, as the ponds were designed to retain a large volume of rain and run-off.

Fishing can be both relaxing, providing time for reflection, stress relief, and a deep, quiet connection with the natural world, and it can be exciting, too, when a you hook a live one. It’s an activity that is a great opportunity for family quality time, fun camaraderie, or peaceful solitude. Please take some time to enjoy Harmony’s bountiful fishing amenities, and remember to exercise care for yourself, your family and friends, and respect for our natural world. n
