Welcome to Essential information for day one
Term 4

Let’s talk about sleep...

Welcome back!

It’s hard to believe this is our final term for the year – and our last few weeks with Year 12, who commence HSC exams next Wednesday. Go well and with confidence, girls, you’ve got this!

Whether your daughter is in Year 12, Kindy or any learning stage in between, there’s one simple thing that will help set her up for good health, a great attitude and optimal performance in Term 4. It’s sleep.

As a rule of thumb, we should be aiming for:

Junior School students: 9-11 hours per night.

Secondary School students: 8-10 hours per night.

Adults: 7-9 hours per night.

Last term, I started this conversation by encouraging students, staff and families to set their age-appropriate sleep goals and use the free app called Sleep Tracker to achieve them. Given we are at the start of term, we now have the perfect opportunity to conduct a whole-school social experiment to feel the benefits of getting the right amount

of sleep from now until the end of term. According to the experts, these benefits include:

• Better judgement, decisions and choices, creativity, co-ordination and self-control

• More patience and confidence

• Greater focus, learning and retention

• Improved health, energy and strength

• A brighter, shinier you!

To support your family’s efforts, you might like to download this reminder of why sleep matters and stick it on your fridge.

There are a few other important pieces of information we needed to share with you before our first day of learning on Tuesday 10 October, so please read through the sections related to you. Of special note are:

• New Junior School Office location (pages 4-5)

• Key staff news (page 5)

• Pymble Gives Back and Jacaranda Day reminder (page 8)

| PYMBLE LADIES’ COLLEGE 2

Our girls have much to look forward to this term, as do we as a community, starting at the Pymble Foundation Ball next Saturday 14 October. Thank you to all those who are supporting this very special inaugural event – limited numbers of tickets are still available, and the silent auction items are listed at the back of this book for those who are unable to attend but wish to be part of the fundraising fun.

Wishing all in our Pymble family a bright, shiny term ahead, filled with the perfect amount of sleep!

TRAVELLING AND PARKING SAFELY

Thank you for being aware of our collective responsibility to travel and park safely while on our campus and in the surrounding streets. If it’s been a while since you last read our Pymble Traffic Safety information, or your daughter drives to school, please take a moment to become reacquainted with our rules for parking and traffic management.

NEW JUNIOR SCHOOL OFFICE LOCATION

After an extremely efficient and smooth-running build that was completed last term, our newly combined K-6 Junior School Office will be operational from the first day of Term 4. This means all K-6 administration and leadership staff will be located in one building that is central to both the Kindergarten to Year 2 and Years 3 to 6 learning precincts.

Our new Junior School Office is situated between the K-2 precinct and the John Reid Building, as indicated on the map opposite. Parents, carers and all visitors to the Junior School are asked to park in designated visitor parking or the Centenary Car Park and follow the walking paths indicated on the map to access the Junior School Office.

Parents and carers must come to the new Junior School Office when collecting or dropping off students during school hours.

OTHER POINTS TO NOTE FOR JUNIOR SCHOOL:

• There are no changes to car lines for K-2 or 3-6.

• All existing Junior School telephone numbers and email addresses remain the same.

• Junior School lost property is now located in the K-2 Performing Arts Room (upper room) and can be accessed before or after school.

We know it’s exciting when students get their L-plates or P-plates, however, for the safety of our entire Pymble family, Learner and Provisional student drivers are not allowed to drive on roadways within the College at any time.

STAFF NEWS

In the Junior School…farewell (for now) to Mrs Davey

Many Junior School students and families will be aware that our Deputy Head of Junior School Operations, Mrs Nerissa Davey, has faced significant health challenges this year, which she continues to overcome with her trademark positivity, courage and zest for life. While her treatment continues to be successful, Mrs Davey has decided to take leave in Term 4 to prioritise her full recovery from her cancer journey. We send Mrs Davey all our best wishes, love and hopes for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, Mr Stephen Robinson will assume the role of Acting Deputy Head of Junior School Operations.

In the Secondary School….welcome to our new Head of Drama

We are delighted to welcome our new Head of Drama (Curriculum), Ms Melinda Pedavoli, who commences at Pymble in Term 4.

Top tip for Term 4:

Disconnect Me

Ms Pedavoli comes to Pymble with a strong background in Drama teaching and leadership, having taught Drama and English at St Aloysius’ College, International Grammar School and, more recently, St Catherine’s School, where she also held the roles of Head of Teacher Development and Head of English. At Pymble, she will report to our Head of Learning Area – Performing Arts, Mr Marcus Stafford.

The College extends sincere thanks to our Director of Co-curricular Performing Arts, Mr Michael Griffiths, who stepped in to support our students while we filled this role.

SUMMER UNIFORM REMINDER

Thank you for ensuring your daughter wears her summer uniform correctly, as indicated by the below illustrations, and with pride.

*Click here to access our online College Uniform Shop.

Need a compelling reason to reset the amount of time you or your child/ren spend on your phones? Dr Danielle Einstein is a Clinical Psychologist and Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University (not to mention a friend of our Pymble Institute and a member of our Pymble alumni) who has been working with comedian Alex Lykos to create a documentary called Disconnect Me

The film is being released on Thursday 19 October in independent cinemas and examines the impact of disconnecting from a smartphone for 30 days. It also features interviews with children, teens, adults and experts to bring research ideas and complexities to life and inspire teens and parents to make small, positive changes to your screen time and habits.
