Blood Drive Draws Record Numbers

Blood Drive

• Local students step up for record blood drive.

By Nina Li A single pint of blood donated saves three lives. More than 117 pints of blood were donated by Peninsula High School students on May 24 at the fifth annual blood drive sponsored by Peninsula’s Service Learning Leadership (SLL) and UCLA Health.

While the event was held only one day, there were weeks of planning beforehand by SLL and Noelle Lai, the coordinator and communicator between UCLA Health and SLL. SLL formed a committee to make sure the Blood Drive ran smoothly. To garner sign-ups, each SLL member, regardless of whether or not they were on the committee, had to get seven sign-ups from students or community members.

For an incentive, students with the most sign-ups received free movie tickets. At the end of the sign-up period, with advertisements on social media, around campus walls and in various email blasts, there were more than 300 names.

Panthers Draw Blood . . . Peninsula

The difficult part was collecting the three-page blood drive form. The forms consisted of a sheet that detailed which period the student wanted to donate, and two permission slips for UCLA and the Palos Verdes school district.

Because the collection period coincided with AP and CAASPP testing, the number of returned forms were significantly smaller than in previous years.

However, on the day of the event, students who were 18 years old were able to donate without a parent’s signature, which greatly helped the number of pints of blood donated.

“No other drive compared to this one,” Lai said. “I have to say that it is the smoothest blood drive I have ever seen in the 21 years that I have done this. Just when I thought I have seen everything before, this group still amazes me.”

Lai has been working with UCLA Health for 18 years and has been the main coordinator for the drive since 2015.

“My favorite part of the drive is seeing how everything pulls together due to the work the kids put into it,” Lai said.

“If they are unorganized, it will show immediately. The SLL kids are the heroes, perfecting the processes of the day.”

The day before the event, the SLL members signed up for different jobs that they would be in charge of on the day of the drive.

“I was part of the blood drive committee, and I was one of the people to

make sure people went to the right place to fill out forms after they checked in,” Kiara Wong said.

“Overall, I was just making sure people were comfortable and had plenty of snacks while they waited. My favorite part of the blood drive was probably donating blood myself, because it was my first time,” she said.

Many stations were manned by students who talked to donors, giving blood, and handed out snacks and water.

“My job during the blood drive was to comfort people during and after their donation,” Juri Maeda said. “My favorite part during this event was seeing many students, teachers and parents donating to save some lives. I was amazed by the number of donors we had this year.”

“Personally, my favorite part was actually donating blood,” Keilani Sumi said. “I always wanted to donate, but I was never allowed to until this year, so I was excited. I love it since I know that I will make a difference in someone’s life, and this experience has made me certain that I will be a regular blood donor.”

For many, this was the first time to give blood, and many were afraid. But,

Going Bananas for Berkeley A Long Tradition On The Hill Go-U-Bears

• Students from the Hill have long travled north for an education at UC Berkeley.

By Nina Li As the school year comes to a close and graduation looms, many seniors have decided where they will be heading in September.

Each year, students are accepted into a wide range of great schools, and this year is no exception. Peninsula seniors have certainly left their mark on their high school campus and will continue to at their respective universities.

From a survey of 261 students done by the College and Career Center, some 20 students said they will attend the University of California, Berkeley in the fall. That number is always high, with people referring to Peninsula as a “feeder school” to UC Berkeley.

There were 87,353 students who applied for UC Berkeley admittance this year, and, with an acceptance rate of 16.9 percent in 2016-17, the accomplishment of getting into the school is an academic feat. According to Berkeley News, students accepted had an average SAT score of 1347 and an average ACT score of 29.

Many students accepted Berkeley not only because it is one of the most academically renowned UC’s, but because of a variety of other reasons, in-

cluding environment and prices.

“Berkeley was not my first choice, but it was one of my top choices,” Connor Tumelty said. “I primarily chose Berkeley for the lower price, compared to privates and their biology programs.”

Berkeley’s most popular majors include social sciences, engineering, biological and biomedical sciences. Due to its academic ranking and the opportunities provided within each department, many students are attracted to its campus.

“I fell in love with Berkeley largely because the program I got into felt like it was almost made exactly for me and what I wanted to do,” said Robert Peltekov. “I would also be surrounded by people who are all just as motivated as me to make a difference with their education.”

While many students were determined to go to the East Coast and cultivate a new way of living and explore the differences between where they have lived the majority of their lives and how it is across the country, some students expect to thrive on the West Coast. California, arguably, has the best weather, which many students do not want to give up.

“I think that so many people choose to go to Berkeley from Palos Verdes High School and Peninsula High School because not only is it located in the amazing California, but it has a place for everyone to expand and succeed,” Peltekov said.

“It is not known as being best or good in just one focus, but it excels all around in giving students an education for whatever path they might choose,” Peltekov said. “Coupling that with instate tuition that is usually half of what a similar-caliber private institution costs, Berkeley becomes a college that is pretty hard to pass up on.”

The exposure to the campus and multiple visits also solidified some students’ decision on where they would go. Whether it be field trips, conferences, campus tours or a relative that went to that school, many students, on a first visit were overcome with a sense of belonging.

“I absolutely loved Berkeley the first time I went to the campus for a Model United Nations conference,” Kiara Wong said. “The people, the food and the campus were all amazing. Berkeley just gives you so many opportunities to meet new people, go out into the world and explore and really just find yourself.”

To students who have lived in California for a long time, UC Berkeley, along with all the other UC schools, are a great opportunity and a chance to receive an amazing education.

“Berkeley and the UCs are colleges we have heard about since freshmen year,” Hannah Shever said. “Being accepted into a UC is an amazing accomplishment where their past freshmen year selves would be proud of.”

PEN Volleyball Sets New Standard CIF Volleyball • Peninsula High boys’ volleyball team wins first CIF title after 2-6 Bay League season.

By Justin Kim Just as the school year wraps up on the Hill, Peninsula High’s boys’ varsity volleyball team made a historic push that has changed the legacy of Panthers’ volleyball.

No Peninsula boys’ volleyball team has ever won a CIF title, much less made a run all the way to the state finals. Despite a 2-6 record in Bay League, the Panthers received a bid from CIF that allowed them to continue their season.

On their journey toward winning the first CIF title for Peninsula in CIF SS Division 3, the Panthers swept Foothill Tech, Roosevelt, Foothill and Kennedy high schools to move on to the next round.

The Panthers faced Quartz Hill at a neutral location, Cerritos College, to play for the title of CIF champions. They won their first two sets before losing the third set, only to come back and end the game in the fourth, officially making them the first team in Peninsula history to win in the CIF finals.

Perhaps what made this team special and motivated them to succeed this year was because the team barely missed making the playoffs last year.

Most of last year’s players were back this year.

Said senior Ethan Colin, school Valedictorian, CIF Southern Section Boys Athlete of the Year and ScholarAthlete of the Year, said, “This team and this season were so special because we were able to prove ourselves after

The Panthers lost the first set 25-22 before rallying to win the second set 25-23. Despite the Panthers’ best efforts, the Eagles outlasted them in the final two sets, winning 25-17 and 25-19.

despite the defeat. The cheers lasted long past the announcement for the Panthers, and the student section chanted endlessly for their classmates that had proven so much and rewritten history.

Team captains Akin Akinwumi and Clarke Godbold led the team throughout the season.

Said Godbold, “This team was super special because we didn’t start the year super strong. I thought we had each others backs and shared jokes on and off the court. The best games were the ones in which we kept it lighthearted on the court because we played much better.”

Akinwumi is a senior who has committed to playing Division 1 volleyball at Pepperdine University. Godbold, a junior, has committed to play Division 1 volleyball at Long Beach State University, a highly ranked school in men’s volleyball.

Dancing Panthers Set For Senior Changes Dance • Peninsula High dance teams and programs will be going through changes after a large senior class graduates.

By Asumi Shuda As the 2018-2019 school year comes to a close, the Peninsula dance program is beginning to say good-bye to the old and greeting the new. With the bids of farewell to the seniors who are leaving the dance program, Peninsula is transitioning from this year to the next.

This year, there is a larger number of seniors leaving the Peninsula dance program than previously. For example, Varsity Dance is losing 11 members from the team. For underclassmen like junior and Varsity Dance member Jennifer Vieweg, the departure of the seniors has been a bittersweet experience.

“It is crazy to see so many of the seniors leaving, and it is kind of weird thinking that they will not be around next year,” Vieweg said. “The bond we

created as a team, though, will not be changed because of the distance put between us.”

For COED Choreo, this season was especially sentimental due to the increased bond that was created within the team. With 16 seniors leaving the team, COED Choreo will be losing a chunk of members who shaped the team’s dynamic. This year, members wanted to focus more on mental health and team bonding, which resulted in family-like inclusiveness. To junior and COED Choreo varsity captain Chrislyn Tseng, the departure of this year’s senior class hits close to home.

“When I think about the seniors leaving, [I think about] how much they have taught and influenced me with their presence and dedication, whether that be with dance or just life in general,” Tseng said. “This graduating class is truly something special, and I will miss them more than I ever thought I could miss people.”

My favorite part was how kind the nurs-

es were. It was my first time donating and I was a little scared of the needles.

However, there was this one nurse who was such a sweetheart, she wanted to make sure I was taken care of and that I was relaxed. A lot of people tense up and that can cause problems. The vibe in the auditorium was really nice since everyone felt good volunteering together.”

The team finished 25-14 overall, but that record does not do justice to their success. They went above and beyond all expectations, beyond what anyone asked them to do. And for their hard work and dedication to the sport and to each other they have earned a spot in the history books.

Unexpected results include the 6-11 White Sox defeating the first-place Red Sox in the PV Little League Intermediate championship game. And the 8-10 Dodgers defeating the 10-8 Angels in the Rolling Hills Intermediate Division championship game.

Rolling Hills Cardinals Gavin Eades hit five home runs this season to lead the Peninsula.

PANORAMA is still in action with the next edition out June 22 with King of the Hill, Tournament of Champions and All-Stars. Then our final edition before our summer break will be out July 14!

PEN Senior Dancers Set To Move On

. . . Continued from Page 6 ing. This group of dancers also focused on team bonding this year, creating a stronger connection between its members. For freshman and Advanced Dance member Keila Bara, seeing her role models move into the next step of their journey is a hard but meaningful experience.

“The seniors on this team are people I look up to, and they made the team what it was this year,” Bara said.

“They made [my first year on this team and at this school] the most unforgettable experience, and I am going to miss them so much.”

Junior and Choreo Company captain Mirai Takeuchi bears the weight of losing a number of the seniors on her team as well. With 11 seniors graduating, Takeuchi and the rest of the team reminisce this season and how these individuals shaped the team. Although the team heavily emphasized

on their skills and artistry as dancers this year, Choreo Company persevered through with lessons from their graduating class and overall team spirit.

“With half of Choreo Company being the senior class, it is a bit sad knowing 11 of us will graduating,” Takeuchi said. “However, we were able to learn something from each of the seniors this year, whether it be with dance or not.”

Although most of the seniors are majoring in an area unrelated to dancing at their respective universities, some desired to pursue her passion beyond high school. Senior Ione Ogawa decided to undertake a dance major at Chapman University in the fall.

After spending four years of her high school career on the Varsity Dance team, Ogawa decided to expand her talents in the arts through college and possibly beyond. Varsity Dance head coach Kimi Hendrick believes in her

potential to pursue dance at Chapman University and potentially making it a career.

“Ione is very qualified to pursue a dance major because she is the hardest-working student I have ever had,” Hendrick said. “She loves to dance from the depths of her soul, and she approaches life as an artist.”

Ogawa was initially trained as a ballet dancer which built the foundation of her artistry. However, once she enrolled in high school, Ogawa began to branch out to other styles such as contemporary, jazz, and even hip-hop.

Along with these styles, her skills even resonate in improvisation in which she competed at various competitions.

With this wide variety of styles and techniques Ogawa learned throughout her journey as a dancer, from Hendrick’s instruction to her overall growth, she is now taking her passion to the next level in college.

“Usually ballet dancers are very automated and lack creativity, but Ione has a great sense of musicality and style [with improvisation] and has the ability to live in the moment,” Hendrick said. “[The one piece of advice I have for Ogawa is to] live [her] best life. [She has] all of the talent and passion [she] needs. Let everyone see it.”

Despite the inevitable goodbyes a graduating class may bring, the Peninsula dance teams hope to integrate the lessons and experiences the seniors brought to the program and internalize it to better the future of its dancers.

“The team has been my second home this year, and it was thanks to all of [the seniors], who are now moving on to bigger and better things,” Tseng said. “I cannot wait to see where they go and what they accomplish”

Cubs Battle Through Playoffs For Title Junior League

• Top teams knocked out early leaving a path for the Cubs to defeat the White Sox and win the Junior League tournament at George Allen Field.

The Cubs were one of five teams to finish the regular season with a .500 record. They beat the Angels and Giants to reach the finals, where they earned a 4-2 win and the Junior League championship.

The White Sox finished the regular season with a 7-11 record, but they defeated the Yankees, Brewers and Rockies to reach the final game.

Close Finish . . . Junior League playoffs proved to be exciting and unpredictable with every team having the opportunity to compete for a championship title.
