Middle School Girls Take On Lacrosse Lacrosse • Ridgecrest, Miraleste and Palos Verdes Intermediate school have developed strong girls’ lacrosse programs.

By Nina Li While football, basketball and soccer are the most popular sports played in middle school and high school, more

students are becoming interested in lacrosse.

In the middle schools across the Hill, girls’ lacrosse teams have been forming and expanding with the increasing interest in the sport. Intermediate schools Ridgecrest, Miraleste and Palos Verdes have teams with more than 20 girls and have been competing since the start of high school team play.

In the past, there have been clinics

held at the intermediate schools to motivate eighth graders to join the lacrosse team at Peninsula and Palos Verdes, after playing for their middle school team.

For the past 18 years, Joan Russell has been coaching and helping to develop the sport throughout the Palos Verdes community. The work of Russell and other parents in promoting the program has led to the creation of teams not only within the district but also in collaboration with the U.S. Lacrosse

Greater Los Angeles Chapter.

“Like many of the parent and coaches in our area, we have had to coach so our children could play,” Russell said. “I coach when needed in order to grow the game.”

Russell’s daughter played on the Peninsula High lacrosse team, and she has since grown a passion for the sport. She decided to take on the responsibility of being a coach for a sport that she loved.

Korean Club Celebrates

Culture

• Student club celebrates another year of learning the Korean language and culture.

By Justin Kim The first Korean class offered at Peninsula High School started in 2015 under June Choi. Korean 1 was made available to all 4 grade levels and was met with a promising start with enough students enrolled to administer 3 classes.

In the following years since then, the language program has expanded to include Korean 2, 3 and 4 Honors. In just one year after being implemented in Peninsula’s curriculum, the Korean

language program was able to start a Korean club and the Korean National Honor Society. “According to a new report from the Modern Language Association, Korean is experiencing a major boom: enrollment in Korean classes rose by 44.7 % across US and was the only language to grow at the college level.

“Students in PVPUSD are fortunate to have an opportunity to learn Korean at high school level” Korean teacher June Choi said. The requirements to join the Korean National Honor Society were simple: students had to be enrolled in Korean and have previous grades of A’s or B’s in at least 3 semesters of Korean.

Not all members of KNHS are of Korean or Asian background. Approximately 10 students who currently take Korean class and/or are a part of KNHS

Another Year For Learning . . . The Peninsula Korean Club celebrates

the New Year by remember the events of the past. are caucasian students who are interested in learning the Korean language.

On April 16 the Korean National Honor Society held their 3rd annual consecutive banquet at the Los Verdes Country Club. 19 seniors were recognized for their commitment to Korean and 14 new inductees were welcomed into the program. All seniors were the first pilot class to take Korean as soon as it was offered and about half were the first members of the Korean National Honor Society.

Co-President and senior Loren Kim has dedicated 4 years to Korean classes and has held positions as Treasurer her junior year and Co-President her senior year. She said that, “To me, KNHS is a way of finding others who would like to experience and learn more about korean culture with you and you find a small family/community from it. As a pilot member, I loved watching how diverse the program got each year and seeing how many others were passionate about learning more about korean culture” Kim said. “For incoming freshman, I would like to let them know that KNHS is an amazing way to have fun while learning and the friendships you make in it can last a lifetime”.

The number of members from 2016 to 2019 has tripled from roughly 14 members to 43 members today.

KNHS members take part throughout the school year in multiple events such as Chuseok (the Korean Thanksgiving) and other traditional Korean

events.

Mrs. Choi says that the most unique thing about KNHS is “Learning another language and appreciating other cultures are skills that last a lifetime”. “While learning Korean at Peninsula High, students will be introduced to a broad range of aspects of Korean culture and language in a family like environment where everyone respects one another” said Choi. This year, KNHS handed out sponsored Korean lunches, special shaved ice desserts with classic Korean toppings such as red bean and Korean snacks for winning small competitions.

Along with handing out food to their fellow students, KNHS members also performed feats of traditional fan dance and drums, K-POP dances, Korean rap and Tae Kwon Doe martial arts during the schools multicultural week. Members are constantly involved in Korean culture outside of their classroom through completing culture points and volunteer hours each semester.

“It has been incredible to watch students grow into mature young adults. Students in Peninsula Korean program in the past four years have created a culture of community and environment where students take ownership of learning. I’ve had great students and can’t wait to see how they continue to positively learn, explore and impact lives of other people” Choi said.

the rank of Eagle Scouts to Christopher Matthew Tarakji at an Eagle Court of Honor on June 8 at Hesse Park Community Center. Chris is a senior at Palos Verdes High School. Some of his Leadership positions in Boy Scout Troop 276 include: Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader, and earned 28 merit badges and backpacked. He was awarded for a Clark Hale Award and also a 400 Mile Hiking Award with the troop. Chris’s Eagle Scout project was completed to make a pocket park in city of Rolling Hills Estates by constructing two benches, creating an irrigation wall and planting two trees. Chris led a group of other scouts and adults volunteers to make this project successful.

Local Leadership

Whitney Young Award Whitney Young played in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls Softball League from 1993-1999. Though never a star player, Whitney displayed great sportsmanship, developed lifelong friends and a genuine love of softball. Tragically, her life was cut short by a hit-and-run drunk driver. When she died, girls from her softball team were at her bedside.

Each year, PVPGSL honors Whitney’s life by presenting one player from each team (8U & up) with the Whitney Young Sportsmanship Award. This award is not necessarily intended to go to the most valuable player on the team, but rather the girl that displays great sportsmanship toward her team, her coaches and her opponents.

• The Brewers won the regular season behind good pitching and great defense.

Playoff action is underway this week with the Rockies and Cubs already getting key wins. The Brewers and Diamondbacks played Thursday and are expected to win their games and reach Tuesday’s semifinal games.

For the second straight season, there was no recorded home run during the regular season - even with the fence at Ernie Howlett being moved up a bit.

Little League To Junior League

The Big Jump

• George Allen Field is perfect for high school freshman and 7th grade baseball players.

By Timothy Niemann The jump from Little League to Junior League is a big one. The mound is farther away from home plate, bases are farther apart, and there are many more differences, though some are small.

All Little Leagues have 60-foot base paths, and 46 feet between the pitcher’s mound and home plate. In Majors (the highest level of Little League) there are drop third strikes and infield fly rule.

In Junior League, the bases are 90 feet apart, and the pitcher’s mound is either 54 feet or 60 feet from home plate.

There are leadoffs, therefore pickoffs.

Along with that, there are also balks (sometimes played with one warning

before the runner advances a base).

The outfield fence is also a lot farther in Junior League. In Little League, the fence is usually about 200 feet to center field, while in Junior League the fence (to straight away center field) can range from 250 feet to 300 feet.

But there are more aspects to the jump to Junior League than just different dimensions and rules. A player must think more. When a runner is stealing, he must determine how big of a lead he can get without getting picked off. Then he must identify whether the pitcher is pitching to home plate or if he’s attempting to pick the runner off.

The throw from each base to first base is longer. In the outfield, there is more ground to cover, especially in center field. For the catcher, the throw from behind the plate to second base and third base is longer.

Having said all this, there is a case to be made that Junior League is easier than the Major Division of Little League. In Junior League the batter has more time to react to the pitch, which is being thrown from father away. There is more time to react to the ball when it is coming to you in the bigger field, and, for infielders, there is more time to come up and make a solid throw. In Little League an infielder usually has to come up throwing, with no time to spare, especially with a fast runner.

In Junior League when someone is stealing a base, he gets to start running before the ball reaches home plate, as they do in Little League. The throw for the catcher is also farther, giving the base-runner an advantage.

When I first returned to a Little League field after playing in Junior League, I was trying to figure out how far

the Junior League infield goes into the outfield. It must’ve been nearly halfway from the infield dirt to the outfield fence.

The bases are so close to home plate.

It shocked me how much more reaction time there is on a Junior League field. I would love to be able to play in a Little League game and see how I do, being accustomed to Junior League.

It is often said that 12-year-olds in Little League have ‘outgrown’ the Little League dimensions. Should 12-yearolds make the jump to Junior League, instead of waiting until their 13-year-old season? They might, however, be too small or weak for the bigger field and new rules.

Going from Little League to Junior League is a jump, but it’s not as difficult as one might think.

• The Challenger League traveled to PV Little League last week and was greeted with lots of support and a great game.

By Sammy Funk The Challenger League has been a part of Little League baseball since 1989, when it was created for kids that can’t play regular baseball because of a physical or intellectual disability.

The League allows people ages 4 to 18 to play. The South Bay Challenger games are usually played at Lunada Bay Little League, but occasionally games are played at other fields.

PVLL board members and fans say the Challenger League game is their favorite game of the year. Ed Sipes, president of PVLL, presented a $3,000 check on behalf of the League to the Challenger League.

The charity group Los Hermanos and the PVLL majors players were on hand to help the Challenger kids play the game.

This is overall a great way for the leagues to give back to the Palos Verdes baseball community.

. . . Continued from Page 3 Many girls who play on the middle school teams are not as experienced as others. However, with the help of their teammates and coaches, they are able to improve in technique and skill.

“Lacrosse is different than other sports,” Russell said. “We get many players that have never played, so we start with the basics every season. The girls are very surprised on how quickly they catch on to the game, but it holds back the development of the experienced players. It never seems to bother them, they love sharing their knowledge of the sport with the new players. They inspire me.”

The Miraleste girls’ head coach Kevin Cox has never played lacrosse, but he gathers his experience he has received from other sports to apply it into coaching lacrosse through the implementation of drills and game strategy.

“We are so fortunate Kevin Cox coached at Miraleste Intermediate School even though he never played the game,” Russell said. “We need more people like him. He was a great asset to our team; his coaching skills and knowledge led our girls to win both of their Please continue on Page 22 . . .

games on our final game day with PVIS and RIS.” The teams have scheduled games on Monday afternoons from 2:30 to 5:30. The schools divide their team into two sections, A Team and B Team.

Athletes on the A team play full games, while B teams play All-Play this school year. In All-Play, three teams compete at the same time. Two teams play and the third team waits on the the sideline. When a goal is scored the team waiting on the sideline is rotated in. They keep rotating for an hour of play.”

While the popularity of the sport is increasing, the need for more coaches is rising. As of this year, the teams are in jeopardy of losing the program due to the insufficient number of coaches.
