The Pen Paper Gets Busy

Newspapers

• With hard work and dedication the Peninsula High newspaper staff brings the news to students.

By Nina Li As the digital age takes charge and slowly replaces newsprint, it is important to keep the spirit of journalism alive through in the creation of a newspaper.

Peninsula High’s award-winning newspaper, The Pen, strives to harness that spirit and maintain it with every issue throughout the year. As the school year nears the end, current editors and adviser are interviewing to see who will be able to run the newspaper next year, whether a specific section or the paper as a whole.

The Pen has eight issues of a 12-page paper each school year. A typical production cycle begins at the beginning of the month with a storyboard held during lunch, fifth period and sixth period.

During storyboard, writers and editors pitch ideas about stories that could fit under five categories: news, opinion, focus, student life and sports.

Once all the ideas have been voiced, section editors choose two topics for each of their section writers. Because of

the many writers this year, many articles are co-written, resulting in two bylines per article.

The next step is for writers to write their articles and for editors to create page layouts that outline the basic idea of their designs, and, once approved by the editor-in-chief, the editors submit a graphic request or schedule photoshoots, depending on their layout.

Articles are turned in, graphics are emailed and pages are transferred from an idea on paper onto the screen of a computer. Around the third week of the month, on a Tuesday, the entire staff stays after school until 6 p.m. for pasteup, where editors and writers work on their respective projects. The following day, leadership and editors stay in journalism class until the pages are emailed to the printer.

The whole process starts again after a lunch-meeting. The Pen staff continues to work in the creative hub of ideas to disseminate information to the student population.

There are many difficulties involving the production process of a newspaper that may not always be accounted for, but the staff is resilient and able to overcome the road bumps.

“I love newspaper because even when we are having issues, we are able to band together to solve problems and complete a finished product that we can be proud of,” said senior and Editor-InChief Emily McGinn.

“Newspaper combines writing, creativity and teamwork, and it has given me the opportunity to work with some of the best people I know, which makes this experience more than worthwhile, despite difficulties we face each issue,” McGinn said.

As a result of this hard work, staff members on not only The Pen, but other high school newspapers as well, have bonded together in a way that is indescribable and cannot be attributed to other clubs or activities.

“Newspaper is definitely an endeavor that requires the highest form of sportsmanship and communication,” said senior and Managing Editor Alison Kim. “There are definitely challenges in running the school newspaper as a student, but my fellow leadership members as well as others on staff have always had my back. Through thick and thin, newspaper has always been about conquering obstacles and celebrating milestones hand in hand with each other,” Kim said.

Being in journalism and creating a newspaper from scratch not only betters a person’s ability to write and investigate, but it also highlights the importance of timeliness, organization and family.

Newspapers bring all the feelings and emotions that cannot be received from just reading an article on a website.

Holding a physical copy of a newspaper is completely different than scrolling while staring at a glowing screen.

The paper is a culmination of the hardship and stress that was put into it and reflects the invigorating information as well as the harmonious components on each page.

Ridgecrest 5K Run Takes Over Peninsula Raiders’ Run

• More than 750 runners participated in the annual Ridgecrest 5K Run around the Peninsula Business Center last weekend.

Beginning at 8:15 a.m. last Sunday runners took in the middle of Norris Center Drive, made a left turn at the fire station to run up Indian Peek Road, turn left down Crenshaw, turn left and for a long run up Silver Spur Road to another left up steeper Norris Center Drive. Twice.

CyberPatriots Protect Systems

Security • The Peninsula High Cyberpatroit team bonds in competition protecting computer systems.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s CyberPatriotsreached a new high in its cybersecurity journey this past week, as one of its teams was one of 12 teams that qualified for the Open Division Cyberpatriot National finals.

This year, the competition took place in Baltimore, and the team has been participating since arriving on April 8. The team partook in finding various cybersecurity vulnerabilities in given operating systems.

Team members have been preparing through hours of research and studying potential systems for competitions and, ultimately, Nationals. Although they did not place in the top three rankings, they still enjoyed the experience and were honored to qualify through their work in cybersecurity.

The team that qualified for Nationals this year consists of seniors Ryan Chau,

Nicholas Wang, Robert Peltekov, RJ Wakefield-Carl and Seth Carner. The team was formed at the beginning of this school year.

CyberPatriotsis a National Youth Cyber Defense Program where competitors work in teams to find vulnerabilities in virtual images of technological systems, iPads to Windows devices, as well as methods to maintain its services.

The competition goes by rounds, and the process needs to be finished within a six-hour duration. Peninsula’s CyberPatriotshas been competing since 2009 and going to Cyberpatriot Nationals since 2011. The members, one being Chau, were very excited to gain the experience of going to Nationals.

“I originally joined the team because my dad coerced me to do so, but I chose to stay because it was an interesting process,” Chau said.

Chau has been on CyberPatriotssince his freshman year, and he has gone through four different teams since then. However, he feels that this year’s team is special because of the intellectual abilities he and his teammates bring to the competitions.

CyberPatriots team is nationally regonized. The team includes Saahil Parikh, Ryan Chau, RJ Wakefield-Carl, Robert Peltekov, Seth Karner and Nicholas Wang.

“I feel like when I look back at this, [Cyberpatriots] will be seen as a great time in my life,” Chau said.

CyberPatriotsis ultimately a STEM program, and many of its participants feel passionate about the subject or something related to it. Peltekov is one such competitor. He has been a part of CyberPatriotssince his first year of high

school and feels that the team aligns with what he wants to study in college. “[Cyberpatriots] is definitely in line with my passions, as I am going to school for engineering next year,” Peltekov said. “[Being a part of this team] has shown me how much there is to the STEM field as well as taught me

Jessica also received the Senior Service Award for volunteering more than 995 hours during her six years as a Ticktocker. This exceptional and dedicated young woman was a teacher assistant at Miraleste Early Learning Academy, prepared and served dinners at Toberman Neighborhood Center, and was a Bingo caller at Belmont Village Assisted Living Communities.

“There are very few opportunities in life similar to that of what NCL offers,” said Morgan Brandmeyer, president, Ticktocker Class of 2019. “Not only does NCL grant us the platform to safely embark on self-discovery through service, but it supplements the self-discovery with relationships that are positive and supportive.”

As part of a time-honored NCL tradition, graduating Ticktockers wore white dresses as a symbol of new beginnings and fresh opportunities. They also carried nosegay, a symbol of natural beauty, in recognition of the beautiful hearts, minds and souls these young ladies possess.

Playoffs Mark New Season

Little League

• League playoffs begin in about two weeks for all divisions with King of the Hill, Tournament of Champions and All-Stars waiting for post-season action.

The Silver Spur Minors Angels are now 12-0-0 and continue to be the only defeated team on the Peninsula.

The Rolling Hills Intermediate Twins are close to scoring 200 runs this season. while great pitching and team defense keeps the PV Little League Major Division Cubs in first place, allowing only 21 runs so far this season.

The "Baseball Crunch Time” edition of Panorama and, of course, with some Extremely Famous People, will be out on May 25.

Cybersecurity has grown in its importance to the modern world, as today’s society becomes increasingly dependent on technology. With threats to the security of operating and networking systems being ever more of a reality, having programs like CyberPatriotshelp bring awareness to these dangers. CyberPatriotsenables participants to think about and act upon potential dangers to operating systems, and the skills learned from the experience can be something a member can bring with them as they go to college and beyond.

In order for the work of cybersecurity to attain success in Cyberpatriots, however, everyone needs to become a team member. Wang believes that the bond that existed within the team partly contributed to not only them qualifying for Nationals, but what makes them special as well.

“I think the cohesiveness of our team [is what makes us unique from others],” Wang said. “During competitions, we can be serious, yet we can also have a good laugh. I think this balance also [helps us stay on the same page]

as we do not try to compete with each other: we move as a single unit.”

Wang, unlike his four-year teammates, has only been a part of CyberPatriotssince sophomore year. However, he and the rest of this group believe that the amount of experience everyone has under their belt contributes to their success during competitions.

CyberPatriotsgives members an opportunity to explore the field of cybersecurity and apply their knowledge in real-life situations with real operating systems. Wang, Peltekov, Chau, Carner, and Wakefield-Carl were able to succeed in not only this task but working as a unified team as well. These members feel that even after they graduate this year, the future is bright for Cyberpatriots.

“I hope to spread the knowledge of cybersecurity to the [underclassmen] in hopes of them [bringing Peninsula’s Cyberpatriots] to Nationals again,” Wang said.

“Each year, there are going to be new material to learn about [in cybersecurity] and new technologies to be dealt with. It is only going to get harder from here, so I want to make sure that [Cyberpatriots] is prepared for what is to come.”

Scout troops from all over the Peninsula attended the event, which was highlighted by the annual Mayor’s Ride, where members of the Rolling Hills Estates City Council arrive by horseback to feast on the pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage.
