Student members of the Native American Student Union (NASU) at Peninsula High led their second annual Toys for Tots Native American toy drive this year from Dec. 1 through Dec. 12.

NASU had collection containers

set up throughout the community.

For Christmas 2014, toys will be distributed to Navajo, Ramah Navajo, Hopi, White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache, Hualapai, Pascua Yaqui, Zuni, Colorado River Indian Tribes, Chemehuevi, Ak-Chin and other Native American children on their reservations.

NASU Comes Up Big With Local Toy Drive

. . . Continued from Page 2 and tagged the toys before the arrival of the team from the Navajo Nation.

The toy drive was a great success, with a total of 1,004 toys being collected and distributed.

Officers Lorna Benally and Verna Nez, two of the Navajo Nation representatives, told Ben Meyers and Sam Meyers, co-presidents of NASU, what a great job they did and commented that NASU's collection was the single largest collection so far this season.

The Toys for Tots Native American program is unique in that it is the only Toys for Tots Program whose primary mission is to move toys out of the toy collection area, and reach out to disadvantaged Native American children on their reservations, many of whom live in remote locations not near a large population center.

The children served by the Native American Toys for Tots Program are some of the most underprivileged children in our country.

Peninsula High Leader Honored Hall of Fame

• Q & A with Peninsula High athletic director and former Palos Verdes High girls’ basketball coach who was recently admitted to the CIF Hall of Fame.

Story by Tyler Patterson Wendell Yoshida has recently been admitted into the CIF Hall of Fame, and for good reason. He coached girls’ basketball at Palos Verdes for 21 seasons, which included a national champion and undefeated team in the 1991-1992 season. His teams won 13 consecutive league championships and tallied an astounding 444 wins in his years as head coach.

Yoshida stopped coaching after the 2002 season and became Palos Verdes Peninsula’s athletic director soon after.

He is now in his 13th season as athletic director and is showing no signs of slowing down.

We had the pleasure of talking to

Yoshida about his days before coaching, his success as a coach, and his current position as athletic director.

to work with all the young people that I have worked with and then seeing them grow.

Q: What sports did you play in high school and in college?

A: I played football, basketball and ran track in high school. I played a little bit of basketball in junior college as well, but not a lot.

Q: What do you think about all the athletes who are playing one sport?

Would you encourage this or discourage it?

A: I like to see athletes playing multiple sports. As a coach I wanted to have my athletes all the time, but I think they should be playing other sports. I think it’s good to cross train to prevent injuries. And also every person should have an individual sport to get away from it all. Something like golf to stay mentally focused and use different muscles in your body.

Q: Did you start off wanting to be a coach, or administrator or teacher?

A: I really had no intention of being a coach. I was asked to be a coach when I was an undergraduate at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and it was really more to get in the school district because I was working on my teaching credentials. The next year, no one really wanted to coach so I just stuck with it.

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?

A: Besides winning the national championship, it was probably getting

Q: If I wanted to be a coach, what types of things could I do to be the best I can possibly be?

A: As a coach, you must be able to improve on your intellect of the game.

I recommend watching other teams’ practice, and how other coaches run

their practices. I went to a ton of clinics, and I watched coach Knight, Krzyzewski, and Majerus, who have the best minds in basketball.

Q: What has changed, in your opinion, in girls’ sports from when you started coaching until now?

A: I think women are better athletes now than before. They are exposed to sports earlier and their training has improved. There were great female athletes back in my coaching days, but they were more naturally gifted players. Women today train harder, are better conditioned, more coordinated and faster.

Q: If you could change anything in the district, what would it be?

A: Obviously, money is a big issue.

Parents and athletes are now paying a lot of money for things that in the past would be free. The cost of playing sports now has become an issue

Long-Time Leader Of Local Students Heads To The Hall . . . Continued from Previous Page for some families because they can’t afford some things. The financial difficulties the school district is going through is a tough thing. If I could wave a magic wand to improve our facilities and get some better equipment I would definitely do that.

Q: Do you think the decision for kids in the district to attend private schools, such as St. John Bosco and Loyola are parent driven?

A: I absolutely think it’s parent driven. A parent can tell the kid that “hey, you are going to PV or Pen because these are great schools.” After all, the parents are the ones paying, not the children.

I sometimes question the motivations and goals of these parents because the reality is that most of these players are not the best of the best. I don’t know if the kids are dreaming or if it is the parents.

If you ask the kid, I am not so sure they would want to go to Bosco or Loyola. If you are good at what you do, coaches will find you (we had college coaches here this morning).

Q: What was the most dominant team you have ever seen in the South Bay?

High Athletic Director Wendell Yoshida speaks from experience and still enjoys working with student athletes.

A: (Laughs) Oh, without a question this year’s Peninsula girls’ tennis team. They could have beaten any tennis team in the country and their matches weren’t even close.

Q: Even more dominant than your undefeated national championship team?

A: Oh, for sure. I call this tennis team the “freak team.” My team would have faced a letdown eventually, but not this team.

Heritage Girls Set The Pace For Running Fun Girls on the Run

• Peninsula Heritage School girls team of “Girls on the Run” recently competed in the organization’s 5K run held at Dockweiler Beach in Playa Del Ray. This event was a celebratory culmination of the 12-week “Girls on the Run” program, which drew young female participants from throughout the Los Angeles area.

“What a fabulous experience for the girls and for us,” said parent and cocoach Jennifer Hart who, along with Emily Power, met with the girls’ team at Peninsula Heritage School twice each week.

“The girls do 90 minutes of physical activity each week, which includes running, jogging, and skipping. We teach from the ‘Girls on the Run’ curriculum, which is designed to impart life lessons through movement.”

“Girls on the Run” was established in 1996 in North Carolina, and last year had over 713,000 girls participating in the U.S. and Canada. The program “empowers girls and teaches them to be strong in mind, body and spirit.

Using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running, ‘Girls on the Run’ addresses bullying, the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, body image, and community service.”

“There were 6,000 girls in this 5K,” said Hart. “Each girl invited a running buddy to accompany her. Being part of a this race was exhilarating. One’s placing in the race is not part of the ‘Girls on the Run’ program; all the girls received medals. Our goal is to build confidence through achievement.”

The old Big Daddy Nikon camera guy is still recovering from the big AYSO King & Queen of the Hill soccer tournament and last weekend’s PVBA Photo Day with more than 900 players and close to 100 team pictures.

Spring Sports Registration Underway On Deck

• Little League baseball, Pony League baseball and girls’ fastpitch softball are preparing for the 2015 spring season.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ Softball League will end its online registration this weekend. Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Silver Spur Little Leagues end online registration Dec. 31 and Lunada Bay Little League Jan. 5.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Pony League will end its spring registration when 120 registrants have been received - whichever comes first.

Tryouts - "skills assessments" - for the leagues will take place in early January with the spring season beginning in February and March.

Sea Kings Dominate State Again Cross Country

• The Palos Verdes High cross country team continues the long tradition of excellence at State meet.

Story by Duncan Reid The Palos Verdes cross country team continued to live up to its reputation as one of The Hill’s most successful high school sports team, this year finishing its season at the state cross country meet in Fresno with a third place showing for the boys and a state title for the girls.

At the CIF meet in Walnut, a week earlier, the results were the same: the girls finished first, and the boys’ team third.

At the state meet, Palos Verdes ran its full lineup of girls for the first time all season, as several girls were nursing injuries at different times during the year.

Junior Jacquelyn Smith, a transfer from Marymount High School, was the Sea Kings’ top finisher, in ninth place (18:15) on the 5k course. She was followed by sophomore Camille Hines (18:32, 15th) and senior Cassidy Webber (18:40, 19th). Webber had been been on PV’s state title team as a freshman, and came back to win a second in her final season.

On the boys side, PV’s “four horsemen” of Robert Franklin (12th place), Bennett Gagnon (18th), Jake Cohen (23rd) and Duncan Reid (29th) needed a fifth, and the squad found one in senior Connor Henebry, who placed 60th overall to send the boys team to the podium once again.

Junior Davis Butler came back from

a knee injury as the Sea Kings sixth runner. The PV boys and girls both reached the podium at the state meet for the 6th straight year, which ties the state record.

On the season, the PV boys also saw strong racing from two upperclassmen brand new to cross country, junior Matthew Espinoza and senior Adam Berger. The girls team was very deep as well, and with only seven runners participating at the state meet, several of the South Bay’s top runners did not get to race in Fresno, including junior Lauren Bourgeois and senior Anika Jensen.

Chadwick also competed at the state meet and took 12th on the girls side.

The team’s top runners, Jacquie Hoot and Meg Knox, led the way and were named to the Daily Breeze AllArea girls second team this week along with PV’s Watson.

PV’s Webber, Hines, Pruter and Smith made the first team. PV Coach Brian Shapiro was the Area Girls Coach of the Year.

On the boys side, Franklin, Gagnon, Cohen and Reid were on the All-Area first team; Henebry made the second team.

All of the team members are looking forward to the high school track season, which begins March 3 in a home dual meet against Saugus.

PV Galaxy, Holland, Tigers Finish Season Undefeated

• Three teams finish the fall season with undefeated records.

The boys’ U14 PV Galaxy, boys’ U9 Holland and the girls’ U9 Tigers finished the fall soccer season with undefeated records.

PV Galaxy also did not have a tie and won the King of the Hill championship match, 2-0, over the Trojans.

The boys’ U9 Holland finished the regular season with an 8-0-1 record in the BU9-A Division and defeated England, 3-1, to win a King of the Hill championship.

England had a great playoff run after finishing the regular season 5-2-2

• PV Galaxy is the only team in Region 10 to finish the fall soccer season with an unblemished record.

The U14 boys’ Galaxy completed their undefeated season with a 14-0 record by beating the Trojans, 2-0, in the King of the Hill championship game.

It was a tight, 0-0, game in the 2nd quarter until Luke Frasso received a brilliant pass from Rohan Ali which Frasso slammed into the upper left corner to give the Galaxy a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after Frasso received another great pass, this time from DeClan Wilson, which Frasso hooked around the goalie to put the Galaxy up 2-0 at half.

Daniel Basilios made numerous diving saves in goal and got the shutout for the Galaxy, which now moves on to the regional playoffs starting January.

The Trojans, coached by Barry Khan, had a great season and finished with a 10-4-1 record. The Galaxy are coached by Pat Wilson.

Surprises Mark End Of Soccer Season

. . . Continued from Page 9 and defeating Costa Rica in the semifinal match to reach the finals.

The Tigers finished the regular season with a 5-0-1 record in the girls’ U9-B Division and defeated the Purple Panthers, 2-1, to win the girls’ U9 Queen of the Hill championship.

In the girls’ U12 championship match, the Purple People Eaters got revenge from two previous losses to the first-place Pink Poison by getting a 3-2 over time victory.

The Panthers concluded their fantastic playoff run with a 2-1 win over the Spartans to win the boys’ U10 King of the Hill title.

Two teams that also had great playoff winning streaks were the boys’ U11 Warriors and Blue Comets. The Warriors finished the regular season in sixth place with a 4-4-1 record, just behind the Blue Comets.

But the Warriors played great defense and scored a 1-0 win to claim the boy’s U11 King of the Hill championship crown.

In the girls’ U14 championship

match, Blizzard came from behind in the final minutes of regulation to score two goals against the Force to send the match into overtime where both teams were unable to score.

The Force then took control during penalty kicks, 3-0, to win the Queen of the Hill girls’ U14 championship.

Chelsea FC and the Gladiators played one of the best matches of the tournament, which saw Chelsea FC win the boys’ U12 King of the Hill championship on penalty kicks, 7-6.

In the girls’ U10 Division the Green Flash finished the season without a loss. They finished the regular season tied for second place with a 4-0-6 record behind the first-place Green Gummies (6-3-1).

The Green Flash won the championship game, 1-0, to claim the girls’ U10 Queen of the Hill title.
