Solar Engineering . . . Peninsula High’s Solar Engineering Team competes

annually in the Metropolitan Water District Solar Cup competition where they race a solar-powered boat against 40 other schools. Over the years, the team has won First Place Endurance, First Place Technical and Second Place Sprint.

The Solar Engineering Team provides a great outlet for students to exercise their collaboration skills and learn about mechanical and electrical engineering in a hands-on environment.

Student Club Raises Funds . . . The Peninsula High S3 Charity for Epilepsy Club

is a charity formed by Peninsula High juniors Jordan Stout and Andy Seawright.

They and their friends hold fundraisers over the year to raise money for kids with epilepsy. The Peninsula High S3 Charity for Epilepsy Club members traveled to UCLA Mattel Children Hospital to donate $8,000 they raised together for 2015.

They presented the check to Dr. Raman Sankar, the Chief of Pediatric Neurology, who has been a friend of the Charity since it was founded three years ago.

sent 41 Model United Nations delegates to Mira Costa High’s annual Los Angeles Invitational Model United Nations Conference. 1600 Delegates from the top MUN schools in California came together for this event. Despite strict policies and competitive debate, the Panthers’ delegates performed well, winning the overall “Best Club School Award” along with numerous individual awards. School Board Member Reflects On Experience Peninsula Outlook

Good times and bad, being a school board member was a ‘meaningful’ experience

By Mary Scott How do you govern a school district during one of the most financially turbulent times in California history and keep your local schools tops in the country?

You make tough decisions, keep an open mind, and work with everyone who has a stake in your district.

Larry Vanden Bos spent the first five of his eight years as a member, twice as president, on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s Board of Education trying to figure out how to operate the school district on the leanest budgets while still giving students a topnotch education that would make them competitive in college and in the emerging global marketplace. During each of those five years, Vanden Bos and his four elected colleagues had to deliver bad news to students, school staff, and the community at large: The state is cutting funding and to keep the district fiscally solvent staff would be laid off, salaries

reduced, and programs eliminated.

“I walked on the board in December 2007, right as the first set of financials came from the state saying that we needed to cut back,” Vanden Bos told Panorama.

“The recession had just started to hit.

It was the first time the districts were going to have to eat into their reserves or cut back on their operations. … You’re not moving forward on how to best educate kids, you’re reacting to a set of financial circumstances.”

In the face of the seemingly neverending budget cuts – as well as other controversies, including the fight for stadium lights at Peninsula High School (which lost in the end), leadership change, and Common Core and the adoption of new math standards – the business executive gained a reputation for fairness and for being a voice of reason. But after serving two four-year terms on the school board, Vanden Bos came to the conclusion that it was time for a change. He chose not to run for reelection in November.

“I grew up in PV and wanted to volunteer to help [my community]. I think I was helpful as a school board member,” he said thoughtfully. “But it was time to

Suzanne Seymour, director of a local tutoring center, won his seat and was sworn in shortly after his term officially ended on Dec. 4.

The dark financial cloud that hovered over the majority of Vanden Bos’ time on the board has dissipated; for the last two years of his second term the district’s funding has increased – the state now has a stable source of money – and the board was able to reinstate some of the programs and staffing that were

lost in the lean years. However, the new board still has challenges to face.

The operation of schools is changing, Vanden Bos said.

“There are a lot of different mandates coming from the state and federal governments,” he added. “And you have to adapt. If you’re holding on to something from 20 years ago and you think that’s still the right way to do it, you may not be as effective as someone who has a little different perspective, I think.”

The biggest change in education has been the recent implementation of the Common Core State Standards, a national set of standards that has critics in every corner of the country. The PV school district is an academically rigorous one and always has been. Local critics ask, Why change what’s worked in the past?

“Well, because the old system has worked doesn’t mean you can’t do something better,” Vanden Bos explained.

You have to constantly improve, he added, or you’re not serving the students and the school community.

Former School Board Hot Chocolate Season Member Reflects A Culinary Journey

Hey, I’m back!!

In my last column, I mentioned that I would give you some advice on how to spruce up your hot chocolate this winter. I love coming home from a cold day at school and making a warm cup of hot chocolate. Delicious!

There are plenty of cold days in December and after a few days of the same old drink, the classic hot chocolate gets boring. I set off on a mission to find out how I can spruce up your hot chocolate.

Many people are busy during the holiday season, so you can cheat by using store-bought packets of hot chocolate....but if you are really craving that rich, chocolate flavor, you can make

your own with a cup of hot milk, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a dash of salt. Combine and heat over a stove. Now you have a base that you can bedazzle.

One thing that pops into my mind when I think of chocolate is s’mores. I took my base for my hot chocolate and I piled on a mound of marshmallows. I whipped out my blow torch and toasted my marshmallows until golden brown.

I then took a graham cracker and crushed it over the top. You get the

Alexis Fergunson toasted marshmallow flavor with the gooey inside that makes for a delicious hot chocolate and never will you ever want to go back to a plain cup of hot chocolate.

When I think of some of my favorite holiday flavors, I think of peppermint.

One of my all-time favorite treats to make during the holidays is peppermint bark , which uses peppermint extract... leftover extract is a great flavor bomb to add to hot chocolate. Be careful not to add too much...a little goes a long way so add a drop at a time. One thing that’s always lying around the house during the season is candy canes. Another way to get that flavor is to take a candy cane and stir your hot chocolate with it. The heat melts the candy cane and you decide how much peppermint flavor you want.

If you want to experiment with some other ideas, here are just a few: add some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to your base or add it to your whipped cream. Cut open a vanilla bean and scrape the pod into your base for a vanilla infused hot chocolate.

That, said Vanden Bos, gets lost among Common Core’s more controversial aspects, such as computer testing and student privacy issues – students’ personal data is collected during testing that is done online. But technology has rapidly transformed the world and education must catch up.

“In the world today, kids grow up using iPads at age 3 and age 5,” Vanden Bos said. “Education is 20 years behind all of that technological change. And how people do their work in a workplace environment is not at all related to how someone was educated 10 years ago in high school.”

What educators are trying to do, he added, is address these rapid changes in the work environment and teach students the skills they will need in order to be productive members of society.

Achievements and Regrets From cutting into the bone to adding new meat, the board’s biggest accomplishment in the last eight years has been survival and working with the community to make it possible.

“You had to get agreement of the stakeholder groups to survive the lean years. The fact that we were able to do that and still have a program – the kids were still being educated and the kids were still getting good test scores – that was probably the achievement,” he said.

“Is that something ideally you’d like to say is the biggest achievement? No. You’d

rather say, you didn’t have to survive the lean years and cut things, [but] that we actually did this and did that … that helped move education forward.”

Personally, what were Vanden Bos’ most memorable moments on the board?

“I had the opportunity to hand out diplomas to two of my three children. Total highlight,” he said. “Those two moments made up for whatever negative things that happened in the eight years of being a board member.”

Regrets?

“There are a lot of things that we were criticized for that were fair criticisms.

There’s not one that was more disappointing than the other,” he said. “Any time you don’t live up to expectations … it’s disappointing.”

In good times or bad times, the PV school district is the “jewel” of the community, Vanden Bos said. Many people move to PV because of the school district, “and there’s a very good reason for it,” he added. “The schools do a great job serving the students.”

When it comes to volunteering in the community, people should do something that is meaningful for them. Vanden Bos the school board volunteer felt like he did just that.

“It was something I felt good about doing,” he said.

Space Balloon Reaches New Heights PVIT Program

• Palos Verdes High School students puts science and technology into action.

By Dean Porter When Palos Verdes High School reopened in 2002, one thing the school did was start the Palos Verdes Institute of Technology (PVIT), a program started by Lorraine Loh-Norris.

PVIT is a program in which students go to PV High on a Sunday and do a wide variety of engineering projects, ranging from a computer team to a team that sends balloons into space.

Regular PVIT meets on most Sundays from 2 to 4:30 in the afternoon. A new program, PVIT 101, is for students that are just starting on their engineering path. It is held from 12 to 2 in the afternoon.

Some notable teams from PVIT: • Space - A team just launched successfully a high-altitude balloon and recovered it with images from space.

Space team member Eliza Steere said, “Our group is mainly taking our interest in space and engineering and applying it to create a project.”

“Our ultimate goal is to launch a CubeSat in the next year so we are taking everything we learn from these high-altitude balloon launches so we can apply it to the CubeSat,” Steere said.

“Our group is extremely dedicated to this project, she said.

A senior, Leonorah Meroth, stayed overnight in an area close to our launch to retrieve the payload of over $2,000.

“This was our second successful launch and we couldn’t have done it

without the help of our mentor, Dr. Kirkman, and his son, Josef,” Steere said.

• ROV - This team operates under water missions with remotely controlled vehicles.

Notable accomplishments for the ROV team include first place in regionals and third place in internationals.

• Electric Car - Teams are overhauling the old electric car from the first group of PVIT students, making it more efficient and reliable.

• Rocketry - Teams launch a new rocket every few weekends.

PVIT welcomes students from 8th grade to 12th grade and is always looking for more young people to join.

AYSO Fall Soccer Season Over

. . . Continued from Page 10 The Penguins came up with great defensive plays late in the game and defeated the Tigers FC to win the boys’ U14 King of the Hill championship match.

The Riptides shut out the first-place P.V. Flames in semifinal action and then defeated the Blue Dolphins to win the girls’ U14 Queen of the Hill title.

South Bay Centipede finished the season in first place and defeated FC Tron City in the boys’ U12 King of the Hill final.

The Trojans finished the regular season in fourth place, but defeated the first-place Scorpions in semifinal action and then third-place Chelsea PV to win the boys’ U11 King of the Hill title.

In another surprise, the Enemy Anemones defeated the previously undefeated Great Whites to win the girls’ U11 Queen of the Hill championship.

Defense Wins Championships . . . The Trojans finished the regular season in fourth place, but led the high-scoring boys’ U11 Division in defense and won the King of the Hill championship match.

PVBA Season Underway At All Peninsula Gyms Basketball

• The Palos Verdes Basketball Association has began its winter season.

The second largest youth league on the Peninsula will hold games this weekend at all four Peninsula gyms and then will take a brief winter break until Jan. 9.

PVBA has boys and girls teams from kindergarten to 8th grade and will hold its winter season through the end of February.

PV Soccer Has High Expectations This Year Varsity Soccer

By Matthew Gilbertson The Palos Verdes Boys’ Varsity soccer team is off to a great start, and is considered a strong contender for the Bay League title this year. On Tuesday, Dec. 15 the Sea Kings came out victorious over Lawndale High, with the lone goal coming from junior Carter Mitchell.

Palos Verdes also displayed notable performances in their wins against Crespi and El Segundo last week, and have yet to lose a game, winning four

and tying one. The Sea Kings are confidant with their strong start but still see room for improvement.

“Overall I am impressed with our level of play but I want to see us improve our goal differential and put teams away earlier by scoring more goals which can give our many substitutes more time on the field,” said senior Chris Crump.

The Sea Kings are lead by head coach Derek Larkins, who has many years of experience as the team’s coach and as a teacher at Palos Verdes High.

Blue Stingrays Wear The Crown . . . The first-place Blue Stingrays held off the second-place Black Pumas in the blustery winter wind at Malaga Cove Fields to win the girls’ U10 Queen of the Hill championship Saturday. Tied at 1-1 after regulation and overtime, the championship match had to go to penalty kicks where the Stingrays prevailed.

We are pleased with our results and on the field performance but it is still preseason and we still have to iron out some things in order to be ready for season.”

Soleado Suns Sing . . . Soleado school held its annual holiday sing-a-long on a bright, but cold winter day on the playground last week.

No Pressure For FRAM Girls . . . Through six games the girls’ U14 FRAM team allowed only one goal, and that was in the final championship game at the Surf Challenge 2015. The team competed in overtime periods in both the semifinal and final games and lost in the finals on PK’s.
