Arjasbi grew up in the South Bay and has a lot of experience with basketball. She was raised in Redondo Beach and went to the University of San Francisco.

She turned down playing basketball in college so she could get her teaching credential. While at Redondo Union High School she played cen-

RHE Holiday Parade Lights Up Peninsula

The Holidays

• As the holiday season approaches, the Palos Verdes community gathered together to celebrate.

By Nina Li The 18th annual Holiday Parade of Lights, which showcased lavishly decorated cars and performances by various schools, was held at the Peninsula Promenade on Dec. 18.

The parade was created by the City of Rolling Hills Estates to display the many unique characteristics of the community. The parade was covered by many news stations such as FiOS, COX Cable TV, and RPVtv. Michele Swanson, Mike Whitehead and Brenda Barnes returned to be the announcers of the parade and co-host as well.

Assembly Holds All High School Dance For Fun Social • Peninsula and Palos Verdes High students particpate in Assembly dances for great social fun.

By Katie Hageman Palos Verdes Assembly is a local high school organization that teaches students social graces, dances, and etiquette through monthly ballroom dance classes under the guidance of Bobby Burgess.

Students who participate in Assembly are those who had participated in ballroom dance classes in middle school Cotillion.

When these Cotillion students graduate from intermediate school, they are given the opportunity to apply to be members of Assembly.

One current member of Assembly, Julia Davis, said, “I joined because I heard from other members that it was a fun organization. Assembly is also a great way to see friends who I do not see at school.”

Assembly dances are held once a month during the school calendar year on Sunday nights at the Norris Pavilion.

Another member, Brandon Nash, said, “The themed dances provide a nice source of variety in addition to the plethora of different dances we learn through Assembly.

“It is always fun to be able to dress less formally, and people always have creative costumes for the Halloween dance and themed outfits for the other themed dances,” Nash said In addition to the mandatory monthly dances, participants must also complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service each year.

According to Hood, “I soon began

Rachel Hood is an average junior at PVHS during the week, but on weekends she is dancing around the country.

Hood began to dance when she was just eight years old, but only recently has she taken her passion for contemporary dance to the next level.

Her transition started, she said, when “a dance teacher, now best friend, at

traveling with her to her dance convention and to her personal teaching tours.”

Over the summer, Hood and her teacher started traveling locally and gradually the places got farther and farther away. “We traveled to Santa Barbara first, and then moved on to Kansas, Oklahoma, and New York as a part of her teaching tour where she choreographed and taught classes.”

Throughout all this, Hood was learning a lot about dance, and she was creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Although traveling nationally was incredibly exciting for her, it clearly wasn’t the pinnacle.

Assembly Dance At The Norris

. . . Continued from Page 3 bly because it is fun to volunteer, and I am able to do so with my friends. It is also a great way to get involved in the community.”

Once a year, there is a dinner-dance that takes place at the Doubletree Hotel in Torrance. This dance is always around Christmas time and this year it was on Sunday, Dec. 4.

There is a toy drive at this December dance in which all Assembly members bring one unwrapped toy to be donated. This year toys were donated to Saint

Peter and Paul Poverty Program for the Poor.

At the recent dinner-dance, also known as the Candy Cane Ball, students entered the ballroom space with a partner, danced for a little while and then sat down to be served dinner.

Keaton Heise, another Assembly member, said, “I really enjoy going to the holiday dance because it is fun to be at the table with other couples and have the opportunity to socialize.”

Students began with beverages and bread and then they were brought their dinner. The main dish this year was pasta with parmesan chicken. For dessert, there were ice cream sundaes.

After everyone ate, each couple stepped onto the dance floor and listened to the instructions of Burgess.

By Michel Liu Palos Verdes High School is home to many talented and special students, of all genders and backgrounds. However, many of these students often don’t have a platform or a place where they can display their talents to the whole school.

Literary Publication, a class whose purpose is to give a voice to the voiceless, wanted to plan an event that would give creative students that wanted to express themselves a microphone and a spotlight.

After much consideration, the class agreed to hold a slam poetry night at PVHS.

Slam poetry is a type of poetry intended to express a person’s personal struggles or story. PVHS has been home to slam poetry events before, but only as a mandatory assignment for a class.

Dancer Travels World . . . Continued from Previous Page the fringe festival where my teacher premiered her work on me and my solo. I performed my solo for a week in the festival,” Hood said. The fringe festival is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place in the capital city of Edinburgh.

Hood and her teacher didn’t stop just in Scotland, though. After the festival, they continued to travel around Europe, including France and Italy, dancing and enjoying their time overseas.

Currently, Hood is still dancing and traveling, but she is keeping it in the U.S. during the school year.

According to Wood, “I’m assisting at Millennium Dance Complex OC and IDA Hollywood, and I’m on my dance teacher’s company called Geometry.”

Hood also travels on weekends to

the dance convention that her teacher owns called Soul De Soul, or SDS. Just last weekend, Hood was in Dallas for this convention, and soon she’ll be on her way to Denver.

Almost everyday after school Hood is somewhere in Hollywood, and almost every weekend she is traveling around, and yet she can still manage her tough academic load.

When asked how she balances the two, Hood said, “balancing dance and school hasn’t been too difficult, I just really have to manage my time well, focus, and finish all my work quickly before I go to dance.”

Dance is a part of Hood that will not be leaving anytime soon. When asked about the future, Hood said, “I will definitely continue to dance into my future whether it’s my career or not, it’s a part of me.”

Silver Spur Teacher Japanese Comfort Food Loves Basketball Hits The Spot For Winter A Culinary Journey

Hakata Ikkousha is a Japanese restaurant located in Torrance with amazing Japanese food. The restaurant mostly specializes in tonkotsu ramen. Tonkotsu is also known as pork bone and has a creamy consistency and meaty flavor.

The broth is made from boiling pork bones, fat, and collagen over high heat for many hours. The consistency can be compared to milk, melted butter, or gravy and looks very cloudy.

The restaurant takes your order by giving you a sheet of paper and circling what you want.

For the noodles, you can pick the amount of heat and the texture of the noodle. You can also circle if you want more toppings or if you don’t want onions on yours.

The noodles are so chewy and have a great texture to them. The broth is buttery and so heavenly in your mouth.

There are toppings such as crushed sesame seeds, a ramen sauce, pickled vegetables and chopped, fresh garlic.

I highly suggest adding in the garlic because it infuses the broth and the garlic flavor really stands out.

The meat is also buttery and tender and falls apart and just melts in your mouth. They won the Ultimate Ramen Championships two years in a

row so they have perfected the ramen and the broth.

I also tried the fried chicken and it was one of the best fried chicken I have ever tasted. The batter is light and airy and the chicken is tender on the inside.

When you bite into it, you get a great crunch and amazing flavor.

They also give you a small bowl of seasoning that you can dip the chicken in.

The seasoning adds so much flavor and you have to put it on. There is a little kick, but it is definitely worth it.

Make sure you don’t breathe it in because it will travel to the back of your throat and it is not a very great feeling.

Trust me on this, I learned the hard way.

Arjasbi also coached at Palos Verdes High school for two seasons (20092010) and has coached at camps and clinics in Palos Verdes.

She loved teaching and knew that first grade is when you develop most, so she decided to quit coaching basketball and started teaching full time.

In addition to coaching at PVIS, she is teaching at Silver Spur Elementary.

And she loves it there.

When asked by a PTA member to coach, she decided she didn’t want to let that go by, so she agreed to take the job.

At tryouts, she said, “The girls were

really nice with great skill and great sportsmanship.”

She says that each week, two girls from the B team will move up to the A team, if they have a good attitude and focus on the court.

She’s most excited to play her old school’s team, Parras Middle School.

And she’s also excited to compete against Hermosa Valley Middle School, where her cousin coaches.

She said cutting students at tryouts was a very tough job to do. She was very happy that the girls already know the game.

She can’t wait to coach former students. She loves all the kids and hopes to have an amazing season with the girls.

Holiday Parade Brings Out Music, Volunteers . . . Continued from Page 3 as the students danced and the bands played Christmas songs.

Each performance or walk, from bands and Scouts to drill teams and equestrians, were judged by professionals who later decided who to give the trophies to. With instruments decorated and wrapped with twinkling lights, Peninsula High School’s marching band performed many songs that got people in the holiday spirit.

“I thought the parade was very festive and it really got me in the holiday mood,” said Jesse Chu, a Peninsula High clarinet player.

“There were many other schools from all around this area and I got to see how other schools played compared to us. It made me really happy to see so many people gathered together to watch us performing,” Chu said According to Chu, the whole process of preparing for the parade and learning all of the songs took a long time and was hard work.

The band spent 10 weeks working on how to march in sync and then being able to play while walking. They practiced for many hours and got the whole routine down by the time the parade rolled around.

Peninsula’s Pep Squad also performed their routines and encouraged

everyone to get up and cheer along with them.

Although this year they did not perform for a trophy, they learned and shouted many new chants to bring up the people’s holiday spirit. The group has performed for many years in the Holiday Parade and has always found it really fun and festive.

Along with the different performances, businesses interested in promoting their brand submitted applications to become sponsors of the parade.

With the media coverage and many spectators, these sponsors decorated cars, wore costumes, and walked with banners along the parade route. Youth volunteers in affiliation with the City of Rolling Hills Estates helped hold up banners as they marched and experienced being in the parade.

“It was really cool to see people outside of Palos Verdes participating with elements from different cultures,” volunteer Joanne Lee said. “There were performers that dressed in elaborate costumes with different styles of dancing and many more.”

“Seeing everyone come together to enjoy the parade and have fun with their families and friends was really great. I have never stayed until the end of the parade before and seeing it from the start to the finish was a fun and new experience,” said Lee.

Slam Poetry At PV

Therefore, instead of students being pressured to slam words onto a piece of paper, they would have the free will to show their talents to their fellow students.

With hours of preparation and the guidance of Ms. Pavelka, Literary Publication adviser, slam poetry night became a reality on Nov. 29.

There were about 200 Sea Kings in attendance to support the 18 brave students reciting their poems. By the

time the event ended, the night’s air was heavy with laughter, love, heartbreak, depression, and hope.

After the recitations, junior Marissa Hong said, “Up until this year, I was never really familiar with what slam poetry really was and definitely underestimated the power and extremity of it.”

“I think that the Slam poetry night was different from anything our school has ever done in the past because it was just so real and intimate,” Hong said

The PV Crushers, from Palos Verdes Region 10, representative defeated West Torrance Region 14 by the score of 3-0 to become the AYSO Extra West Section 1 GU10 Champions.

PV Crushers will represent Region 10 in the Sectional Tournament Jan. 28 and 29, 2017 at Toyota Sports Complex in Torrance.

The winner of Sectionals will head to Western States Championship in Carson City, Nevada on March 25.

Panthers, Zoo Set For Basketball PEN Basketball • The Peninsula High basketball program is ready to take on the South Bay and a tough Bay League schedule.

By Nina Li The most anticipated sports season has arrived. The tipoff of Peninsula’s first varsity home game, against the Culver City Centaurs, opened the boys’ basketball season.

The Panthers’ 57-38 victory came in front of a festive crowd attending the Christmas themed game. Zoo members got out all their holiday gear and cheered the team throughout the game. Spirits were especially high since the Panthers won.

“The atmosphere was insane,” Zoo member Sophia Wang said. “The Zoo totally brings basketball games to life, and it is enjoyable to share these memorable moments with friends.”

The varsity basketball team, lead by coach Ryan Quinlan, consists of 10 seniors, two juniors and three sophomores. They practice for long hours and prepare thoroughly for every game.

“We practice hard every day and stay focused so that we are ready,” said Justin Kim, a sophomore varsity player.

“We also keep the air light and just go have fun as a team,” Kim said.

The Panthers’ upcoming games are against North High school, in Torrance, and then the San Luis Obispo Tournament, where the team expects to do well. The Panthers are ready to compete against any team, all the while having fun and bonding as a team.

Along with the varsity, the junior

varsity boys began their rise to the top as they played their first game against North High and got a 68-56 victory.

Team members predict they can go undefeated this season and win the Bay League championship, with their strategic game plans and hard work.

“In my opinion, we are all friends on the team, and we play well together,” said junior varsity player Braydon Evans. “I think we have a good team this year and can go far.”

The frosh/soph team is also strong this year, with many returning sophomores and incoming freshman. They practice and work hard in building teamwork and skills. Before the game, they huddle together and talk about their objectives for the game and what they need to do to win.

“My favorite part on being on the team is playing with my teammates, who are now my friends,” said freshman Ethan Ikegami. The team brings a lot of energy, which makes playing with them two times better,” Ikegami said.

As the season progresses, the students will support their basketball teams until the end. The teams had successful beginnings and hopefully it will carry on that way.

Peninsula JV Team On A Tournament Win Streak . . .

The Peninsula High JV basketball team won is off to a great start after winning the Lakewood Open Basketball Tournament recently. The Panthers beat Huntington Beach, Lakewood and First Christian in pool play before beating Oceanview High in the final. The finals were tied 31-31 at half before the Peninsula pressure was too much for Oceanview resulting in a 63-44 final. Sea Kings Basketball Set To Take Off

• The Palos Verdes girl’s basketball team is hungry for more this year.

By Sebastian Atashi “With 10 players returning, we believe we can make a run at the league title”, said Jordan Mickle, senior forward for the Sea Kings girls basketball team.

Palos Verdes may have the firepower to do so. They return sophomore Djae Berberabe, who, as a freshman, averaged 12.2 points to lead the team in scoring.

They will also look to fellow sophomore Ebun Kalejaiye, who provides the Sea Kings with a strong inside presence.

PV has gotten off to a fast start this season, starting 5-1, and placing third in the Corona Del Mar tournament.

Junior Claire Malone credits the high finish to a tough defense and execution on the offensive end.

“This year, everyone is a lot more familiar with each other, and we are really buying into what coach Tom Maier is teaching us,” said Malone.

The Kings will also rely heavily on junior Amelia Dibbo to get rebounds and score on the inside. Malone and Ariana Sunjara, both juniors, will help with the point guard position, as well as freshman Mari Shigekawa.

The Sea Kings will attempt to make a run at Redondo’s grasp on the Bay League League title, while also trying to hold off rival Peninsula and their upand -coming team.

The Sea Kings’ next game will be Jan. 4 against West Torrance.

Boys Basketball

After a 5-20 record last season, and an 0-10 finish in the Bay League, many thought Palos Verdes would likely have the same fate this year, especially after losing Ford Carlson and Adam Fogel to graduation.

However, the Sea Kings have start-

ed off hot, winning five of their first six games, including an overtime win against St. Francis in the championship game of the El Segundo tournament.

Led by tournament MVP Toni Marinkovic, the Sea Kings finished 4-1 in the tournament. Chris Bartlett-Matthews scored a buzzer beating three pointer to give the Kings the championship.

The Sea Kings have used a stingy defense, and hot 3-point shooting to jump out to this fast start, already matching their win total for last year.

Offensively, senior point guard Sebastian Atashi handles the ball, while fellow captain and three-year varsity player Erik Moore looks to score.

Greg Bartlett-Matthews, who is crucial to the team’s offensive and defensive game plans, rounds out the starting five with Chris Bartlett-Matthews and Marinkovic.

The Sea Kings will also receive help come January, when transfers Jack Engstrom, a sophomore who made the move from rival Peninsula, and

senior Austin Moe, who arrived from Rolling Hills Prep in the summer, will be allowed to play for the Kings, per CIF rules.

On the team’s early success, second year coach Brian Edelman said, “It was nice to get off to a fast start and win the [El Segundo] tournament. The group of guys we have this year have bought into the system and want to play for each other, not as individuals. For that, I praise our captains, who have shown tremendous leadership to begin the year.”

The Sea Kings are working toward a better Bay League finish, “Last year was embarrassing. However, we are not the same team as last year. We are working harder and longer, and will be ready come league time, said senior Chris Bartlett-Matthews.

The Kings will travel to Santa Margarita and San Diego over winter break for tournaments. Their first Bay League game is on Jan. 10, at Palos Verdes High, against the Inglewood Sentinels.
