The long-held King and Queen of the Hill soccer tournament finals are slated for next weekend with semifinal matches taking place today.

The Palos Verdes Basketball Association and PVYBL begin their seasons this weekend at all four Peninsula gyms.

High school boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball as well as girls’ water polo have already begun the winter sport season.

PEN Girls Tennis Wins CIF Championship Tennis • Panthers accomplish lofty goals and have a fun season as well.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s varsity girls’ tennis team made history last month by earning the title of CIF Southern Section Champions in the Open Division.

Because these players won the Bay League and were ranked second in CIF, they were able to qualify to play in the CIF finals. Furthermore, the team made it to the semifinals of the state cham-

pionships, where they lost in a close match.

“We were seeded first in the state, but we were missing two of our best players,” senior and varsity captain Koko Makrygiannis said. “So, our goal was to make it to the semifinals, which we accomplished.”

According to Makrygiannis, the lineup for the girls’ tennis team is never set, which causes numerous changes to doubles partners and singles matches before tournaments. Nevertheless, this

Charity League Celebrates Ticktockers Service

Fancy A Spot Of Tea . . . Ticktockers from Class of 2023 served tea at the big event.

• Mother-Daughter Tea celebrates the hard work of local Ticktockers.

The Palos Verdes Chapter of National Charity League, Inc., held its 16th annual Mother-Daughter Tea celebrating 52 Ticktockers awarded for achievements in service hours and welcoming the Provisional Ticktocker Class of 2025.

In the 2018-2019 year, the mother and daughter members of NCL, Inc., Palos Verdes Chapter, collectively provided more than 9,570 volunteer hours to community service.

These remarkable women worked one-on-one with foster children, at-risk youth, and children with special needs while forging remarkable bonds.

They played bingo, made jewelry and folded cranes with local seniors in assisted living.

They also helped teachers with elementary school students at summer school programs, participated in coastal cleanups, prepared and served warm evening meals to school-age children, volunteered in animal shelters, and much more.

Through mission-based programming, National Charity League develops socially responsible community leaders and strengthens the mother-daughter bond.

The core program includes leadership development, community service, and cultural experiences.

PV Cross Country Wins CIF Title Cross Country

• The Palos Verdes High girls’ cross country team continues the school’s long tradition of excellence.

By Claire Hardesty As fall sports seasons come to a close, the Palos Verdes girls’ cross country team has added another CIF Championship to its trophy case. Its second in a row. In addition, Savannah Scriven and Samantha Steman finished first and second individually in the race.

The team of Scriven, Steman, Claire Hardesty, Maya Whitcomb, Natalia Gagliano, Emma Nelson and Anna Terrell won the Division 3 CIF championship race on Nov. 23.

“Individually winning made me feel proud to be apart of this team. I feel like it also made us look more formidable because not only did we win the entire race as a team, we also swept the top spots,” Scriven said.

Setting The Pace . . . The Sea Kings’

Samantha Steman and Savannah Scriven lead PV to a Division 3 CIF cross country championship.

The team was ranked second going into the race behind Brea Olinda High School.

“Winning this year was different than last year because the race was much more competitive. CIF released

and article predicting that the Division 3 girls race would be the closest race of the day,” Scriven said.

Palos Verdes finished the race with 70 points, beating Brea Olinda, which scored 84 points.

“When I found out we won again this year, I just felt a deep connection with my team, and it felt like all our efforts from the past months were finally paying off,” said senior Natalia Gagliano.

“At the end of that race we were all one strong family that did that race for each other,” Gagliano said.

The Sea Kings girls finished the season first in CIF and a fourth at the California state meet.

A hard fought battle this year ended with PV on top, and the girls even more hungry for another win next year at CIF and a higher finish at state.

Panthers Break From The Pack

• Peninsula High begins to make its mark in the highly competitive sport.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s varsity boys’ cross country team celebrated several breakthroughs this season, making it to CIF finals and participating in the Bay League finals.

They ran at the CIF Southern Section finals Nov. 23 in Riverside and placed 20th in Division 2. Junior Ewan MacFarlane placed 6th, making it to the CIF State Championships where he finished 13th, making him 34th in the state of California.

On Nov. 7, the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the Bay League finals, with the boys finishing with 72 points and girls with 93. “[The team] made it to CIF together for the first time in over a decade,” senior and varsity captain Liam Drew said.

“This year, we have a really strong team and really good runners, along with our coach who has been building us up to compete against top teams.”

For the past 10 years, cross country coach Chris Foster has been working to strengthen his team for CIF finals. With many other high schools competing in these meets every year, this goal was difficult to achieve until now. Furthermore, the team only fell short by a few points last season, which motivated these runners to take that final step towards their goal.

Senior and varsity captain Michael Takami believes that this feat was achieved because of the talent of the greater whole this year.

“I think that as a collective group, we have never been this fast for the past few years,” Takami said. “We do have top runners, but they still pull the rest of us up [and motivate us], which definitely helped the team overall.”

Nevertheless, this atmosphere acts as a springboard for everyone to improve and to become the best athletes they can be.

“It is always tough to take a spot from another teammate,” Drew said.

“But, we are always proud of our members if they try their best as well, and if someone is faster than you one day, you just tip your hat.”

Furthermore, the team’s energy this year was influenced by the diversity of the members. According to junior member Devin Sharp, there was a variety of personalities that colored his fellow runners, which made creating friendships both inside and outside the track more meaningful.

“This year, it seemed like everyone had their own respective goals and things they wanted to achieve,” Sharp said. “They all brought their own spark to the team.”

Despite the feats boys’ cross country accomplished this season, athletes never settle. Drew believes that the growing success of the team is relatively new compared to the longstanding achievements of other top-ranked cross country

“I think all of our cooperation and willingness to play wherever with whoever made it so we had the right lineup for any situation,” Makrygiannis said.

There were multiple factors that played into these feats, such as the versatility of the players. These girls’ drive to place in tournaments and their flexibility to work with what they have allowed them to overcome roadblocks, such as not having their best players on the court. This caused the collective whole to become stronger.

“In every match, we had different people secure the win for us,” senior and varsity captain Alicia Keys said. “We didn’t just rely on a few individuals; we really needed the whole team to come through.”

This sense of unity that resonated with the players caused the team dynamic to become very connected and close. This year, most of the team members were new, with only a few return-

ing players, which made the beginning of the year difficult for some. Although this initial shyness existed, the bonds these girls created as the season progressed allowed the collective win they earned at CIF. “As the season went on, we had karaoke rides and overnight trips, which made us all super close, and now we are like a family,” Makrygiannis said. “No one on the team dislikes another, and we have never had any drama, which I am very grateful for.”

Now, as the season draws to a close, the varsity girls’ tennis team reminisces about the memories they have shared on the court for the past couple of months. The underlying meaning of their wins was the connections they created with one another in the process.

“In the end, the whole point is to have fun and share the sport you love with the team,” Makrygiannis said.

“When you grow up, you won’t remember the wins and losses; you’ll remember the bus ride jam outs and the food stops and all of the little moments you shared with the people around you.”

. . . Continued from Page 6 teams. This, in turn, stresses his fellow teammates. However, because there is a lot of potential in the underclassmen and junior runners, Drew thinks that they will be able to overcome these emotions and improve to the best of their abilities.

“For seniors, I think that we just tend to be more consistent with races because of experience,” Drew said. “So, I think these younger runners with really fast times will eventually become more confident in their own abilities. Hopefully, if this can continue, the successes of our team this year will not be viewed as an upset but rather as something expected.”

Now, with the cross country season at a close, seniors like Takami hope to leave behind some advice before graduating next June. The achievements of these runners created a mark in the team’s history creating a window for more impressive feats in the future.

“I would say that putting in the work is the boat of the battle,” Takami said. “Cross country is a culmination of ‘practice makes perfect.’ It does not simply come overnight. Sticking with the [sport] will definitely give you the results that you are seeking.”
