PV Eclipse Wins U16 State Championship

AYSO

• PV Eclipse advanced as Area Champions and won the AYSO Section 1 girls’ U16 championship this past weekend.

After winning the Area 1F Championship with a perfect 14-0 record, the PV Eclipse traveled to Chino to represent the Area in the Section 1 playoffs.

Section one is comprised of teams from 11 Areas which include over 70 Regions in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada.

As each Area sent its respective champion, the field was exceptionally competitive.

On its way to the Championship match, Eclipse eliminated three previously undefeated teams and then was taken to double overtime and penalty kicks by a stubborn Temple City team.

PEN Speech & Debate Continues To Compete

The Peninsula High debate team recently attended local league tournaments at Narbonne High and South High.

At the Narbonne Tournament, Sean Furuta and Woodrow Davidson went undefeated in parliamentary debate.

Minji Oh and Sungyung Lee went 3-1 in Public Forum, and Kris Kaya and Brian Kong went 3-1 in Lincoln/ Douglas. Mei Johnson and Julian Anderson went 3-1 in policy debate, as did the team of Natasha Tieu and Lauren Kong. The team took third place in overall sweepstakes.

At the South High Tournament,

the Speech and Individual Event members were outstanding, winning the First Place Sweepstakes.

Shannon Hearn placed first in Original Advocacy and Expository. Ru Ekanayake placed first in Impromptu and Oratorical Interpretation. Samantha Liu placed first, while Kyle Tanimura placed third, in Humorous Interpretation.

Trevor Rinzler took first place in Original Prose and Poetry. The duo of Cher Su and Jamie Park took second place in Dual Interpretation. Jessica Xu placed second in Thematic Interpretation.

PVIT Gets Busy With Engineering And Competing . . . The Palos

Verdes Institute of Technology finished last month with a lot of robotic engineering. The new VEX Robotics team had its first competition on Saturday.

The small but mighty team had very little time to build their robot, but after many long lunch and after school hours the Sea Queens were able to finish in the semifinals. Rolling Hills Prep Comes Through For Annual Fund . . . RHP students worked the phones on the "Giving Tuesday Campaign" towards the school’s Annual Fund. The school had gifts that came in from current students, parents, parents of alumni, alumni and grandparents throughout the day, and by midnight the goal had been exceeded far beyond what had been expected. The final amount raised in 24 hours was $102,125. Due to this unprecedented generosity, the school is well on its way to reaching an Annual Fund of $350,000. RHE’s Parade of Lights: The holidays are here

By Mary Scott The horns are polished and the horses groomed; yes, everyone, the bands and equestrian units are ready to bring on the holiday cheer in the 17th annual Parade of Lights.

Presented by the city of Rolling Hills Estates with assistance from Pageantry Productions, the Parade of Lights is the Peninsula’s largest holiday event.

Alongside equestrian units and marching bands – 10 of them this year! – will be scouts and other youth groups, drill teams, and antique cars.

Of course, said Andy Clark, the community services director for the city of Rolling Hills Estates, there will be a special appearance by the jolliest of elves – the one and only Santa Claus.

“Our grand finale is always Santa Claus,” Clark added. “That’s always exciting for the young ones, for the young families that are there.”

Richard “Dick” Moe will serve as this parade’s grand marshal. Moe, a longtime resident of RHE, is a civic leader and longtime coach of youth baseball and soccer teams.

The Moe name is most attached to the Norris Theatre. Richard and his wife, Joan, were instrumental in the fund-raising and building of the theater, which has grown since the early 1980s to include the Palos Verdes Performing Arts Conservatory, one of the finest arts educational centers in the area, and the Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion. Moe has remained active with the center throughout its history, and continues to serve on its board of directors.

This parade is unique in that it also has a community grand marshal, which this year the honor goes to Helaine and Steve Lopes. The couple was recognized in October by the PVP Chamber of Commerce as 2015’s Citizens of the Year.

The couple has lent their time and talents to serve local PTAs, the South Bay Trojan League, Vistas for Children,

Torrance Memorial Medical Center, National Charity League, Palos Verdes Little League, Peninsula Education Foundation, and Los Angeles Harbor Boys and Girls Club.

Richard, Helaine, and Steve will be honored by the city during a pre-parade reception. However, the Lopeses will not participate in the parade on Saturday.

Steve, as chief financial officer of the USC Athletic Department, and his wife will watch the university take on Stanford in a PAC-12 championship game on Saturday. Go Trojans!

The Parade of Lights brings much pride to the city of RHE. “We believe the parade is the most popular holiday event on the Palos Verdes Peninsula,” Clark said, “and we look [at] this as a way to introduce people . . . to the Peninsula and, of course, our shopping district.”

But the city’s main goal for the parade is just to have “a nice holiday event.”

The parade, which is from 6 to 7:30 p.m., runs along Silver Spur Road and Deep Valley Drive, through the Promenade on the Peninsula shopping mall.

Panthers Set To Make Some Noise PEN Basketball • As fall sports have just about wrapped up, winter teams are preparing for their seasons.

By Tyler Patterson One of the highlights this time of year is Peninsula High’s basketball team.

Unfortunately, this year’s team will not feature the likes of Kyler Tabazadeh, Noah Riley and Samuel Pukaua Hill. But, returning varsity stars like Mickey Babek, Blake Godbold and Tyler Hazard should make this a successful season for the Panthers.

Returning varsity hot-shot Mickey Babek, the Panthers’ leading scorer last year, expects a lot from this experienced squad.

“Honestly, I have high expectations for the team this year. I don’t want to sound cliché, but being CIF Champions is the ultimate goal,” said Babek.

As for senior varsity wingman Evan Malone, his only mission is “to win.”

Malone, a scholar-athlete who is deciding among many Ivy League schools for next year, knows his strengths and weaknesses on the court.

His skills, he says, include getting buckets and playing solid Peninsula defense.

As for weaknesses, he admits that he has to work on fast break lay-ups and continue to improve his jump shot.

Babek, certainly a crowd favorite at home basketball games, says that he has many favorite memories playing basketball for Peninsula. “Playing in front of the Zoo has to be the most

exciting thing I have done, though,” he said The Panthers have a new coach this year, Ryan Quinlan, who coached the freshmen/sophomore team last year.

Quinlan had a very successful career at Narbonne high school before coming to Peninsula.

“Q man is energetic and intense; he brings a lot of new things to the table,” said Babek.

So far, coaches from around the Bay League have praised the way Quinlan has prepared the Panthers in tournaments so far. The new system Quinlan has instilled has even led to a first-game upset of Crespi, one of the top basketball teams in Southern California.

A player looking to contribute significantly this year is senior Manaho Ogawa. Ogawa, whose teammates refer to as “Mono,” has played well at point guard so far and is very efficient as a floor general.

“I think my job as a point guard is important to our success as a team,” said Mono.

He recognizes that the team goes as he goes. If Mono plays well, there is no telling how good the Panthers can be. His constant defensive pressure, lightning-quick handles, and winning mentality should prove essential for this team.

What really makes this Panther team primed for success is the understanding of each player’s role on both sides of the ball.

“My role on the team is just rebounding well and playing scrappy basketball,” says Mono.

Peninsula Tennis Wins 3rd PV Basketball Shooting Straight CIF Championship For Bay League Wins PV Basketball

from last year’s roster, several seniors look to be major contributors this season.

Senior Jay Lee Campbell poses a difficult matchup for the opposition at the center position, and guard Carlson will help facilitate the Sea King offense.

The Sea Kings aim to improve upon last year’s performance, and stand a greater threat in Bay League.

“As long as we play good basketball, we should do better than last year. We have a tough league so any improvement will be nice,” said Carlson. “We have to be able to out work and out smart the other teams to win, so we work on those things.”

Palos Verdes won the first matchup of the season against South High.

“The victory gives us a lot of confidence starting off the season with a win,” said sophomore Erik Moore.

The Sea Kings hope to build on this momentum and carry this positive start into a successful season.

Moore states that the team’s goals are to “have a solid record at the end of the season and go as far as we can in CIF.”

• The Sea Kings boys’ basketball team expects to make inroads in tough Bay League competition.

Rack It Up All I Do is Win. The phrase itself comes from the song by DJ Khaled, which came out a few years ago. The song itself sounds prehistoric but the phrase is certainly not, not here on the Peninsula campus. Recently, Peninsula Girls’ Tennis won its third straight CIF Championship match against Torrey Pines.

The team was lead by none other than Ena Shibahara, but all the members on the team contributed to prolonging its success.

Here’s what coach Mike Hoeger had to say about the victory. “The girls put in a lot of effort and they deserve it. The Peninsula girls showed heart and dedication into this long endeavor, and now the results have paid off.”

It is incredible how far the girls have come and we, as a Panther family, are very proud of everyone on the team.

After a CIF playoff appearance and victory in the first round of last season’s playoffs, the Palos Verdes varsity basketball team looks to continue improving this season.

Brian Edelman will take over the head-coaching job this season and will work to lead the Sea Kings to a successful season.

“The team has been very open to the change, and we trust coach Edelman to put us in a position to improve on last year,” said senior Ford Carlson.

Edelman previously coached the junior varsity team at Palos Verdes so his current players are very familiar with him as a coach.

“The transition to a new varsity head coach was pretty easy due to the fact that everyone on the team had been coached by him in the past,” said senior Adam Fogel.

PV Football Playing For CIF Title CIF Football • Palos Verdes High will play for its second straight CIF Championship tonight.

By Dean Porter The Palos Verdes Sea Kings rolled into tonight’s CIF SS Western Division finals against the No 1 seed Calabasas High School by defeating Bay League rival Mira Costa High School last week.

In the semifinal game against the Mustangs, played at San Pedro High School, the Sea Kings got off to a slow start by fumbling the ball on Mira Costa’s 45-yard line, but PV quickly bounced back with a stellar performance by the defense, which forced the Mustangs to try a field goal, which failed.

The Sea kings then marched down the field, and senior Kyle Coale kicked a field goal to make the game 3-0 early in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Sea Kings defense forced Mira Costa to punt. Junior Nick Alessi took the kick, got a key down-field block from sophomore Cole Wilken, and raced 70 yards through a huge hole for a touchdown. The game was now 9-3 in favor of the Sea Kings.

Late in the second quarter, just 14 seconds after Mira Costa scored a touchdown, junior Anthony Messori returned the Mustangs’ kickoff 75 yards for another Sea Kings score.

PV lead 16-10 at the half and that would be all the points scored by Mira Costa.

PV tacked on another 9 points in the second half, for the 25-10 final score, ending the Mustangs’ playoff run.

After the game, running backs coach Steven Redlew said, “I thought for the first time this season we put all three aspects of the game together.

A Culinary Journey

I’m super excited to be writing this bi-monthly column in PV Panorama!

Thank you Tom and Panorama for allowing me to write about my passion for food and cooking.

When I was brainstorming for a name for my column, “A Culinary Journey” just seemed like the right fit for me.

Why? Because I have been on a culinary journey for many years, from the time I was 9 months old and tried wild porcini mushroom risotto for the first time, and clapped my hands and kicked my legs for more, while still in my high chair.

I always had a sophisticated palate. Since that young age, I’ve travelled around the world, tasting and trying new dishes and writing about my experiences. I would come home and attempt to make the dishes again, to take me back to the time when we sat under chestnut trees in a Munich biergarten during the summer, sampling the most delicious cabbage salad with caraway seeds.

I really, really, really got into cooking when I took a cooking class in Siena, Italy three years ago. It opened my eyes to how simple and fresh ingredients came together to make something so scrumptious.

Since that class, I have wanted to share my love of cooking and food so that friends and family could experience the same feeling that I had while in Italy.

After posting videos on Instagram and starting a blog, writing a column is the next step in my culinary journey.

Some of the ideas I have for my upcoming columns are restaurant reviews from local South Bay restaurants or quick and easy recipes that don’t taste quick and easy.

Once in a while, I might hit you with a column called ingredient intel where I will share with you different ways to use an ingredient or a spice.

I can’t wait to write an entire column on my favorite spice – CINNAMON!!!

My next column will be about how to spruce up your hot chocolate, to help keep you warm for the holidays and update and modernize this classic (but somewhat boring) hot beverage.

Opus Bank is collecting through Friday, Dec. 11, for the children at Rainbow Services. Partnering with Premier Bank of Palos Verdes, the Lomita Station is collecting toys through Dec. 20 to benefit children at Harbor UCLA and Little Company of Mary hospitals.

The next day, we filmed the competition all in one day and then they interviewed me for an hour and a half, walking me through what I had made.

I had to describe it in detail.

Here are some more tidbits from the show: MOST FUN ACTION SHOT EDITED OUT: Since I play softball, the producers gave me a bat and tossed ripe tomatoes to me while I swung at them into the camera…pieces of tomatoes flew everywhere. Unfortunately, this scene did not make the cut for my bio.

KITCHEN UTENSIL I NEVER FOUND: The grater to grate my ginger in the appetizer round. The grater was hiding from me and didn’t want to be used.

HEAVIEST KITCHEN EQUIPMENT: The food processor was at least 30-40 pounds. You know why I know that?

Because I carried it myself to my station while someone else asked Ted for help.

I won’t mention any names but we all know who it is.

MOST CONFUSING COMMENT: One of the contestants, Cameron, mentioned that he would make cilantro icecream in the dessert round. This might clear the air about why he said that. It is because one of the judges, Tino Feliciano, when he was judging everyone’s dish, would comment that he would love any dish that has cilantro on it or in it.

• Peninsula High advance jazz bands go professional with Peninsula alumni Sammy Miller.

On Thursday Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. the Peninsula High jazz bands will be performing with a professional jazz band from New York City, Sammy Miller and the Congregation.

The concert will be held at the Kelly Johnson Field House.

Sammy Miller¹s band is in the L.A. area, sitting in with local high schools

bands in hopes of inspiring further involvement in jazz in our young musicians.

Miller is an alumni of Peninsula High, so when he approached band director Fred Steiner asking if the school would like them to come, the answer was an enthusiastic “yes!”

The event is open to the public and for only $5 anyone may hear this exciting collaborative performance.

Playoffs Enter Final Rounds AYSO

Heads Up For A Crown . . . The Tigers FC held back That Blue Team to advance to boys’ U14 championship match against The Penguins.

• Playoff action heats up this weekend with elimination semifinal games being played all over the Peninsula.

If Spain and Ireland should get past today’s semifinal matches at Malaga Cove Fields, then the boys’ U10 championship will feature two undefeated and untied teams next week.

The same goes for Perfect Pitch and Blue Dolphins in the girls’ U9 Division.

If both teams get past today’s semifinal games at Ernie Howlett Park, they will put their 7-0-0 records on the line in next week’s Queen of the Hill championship at Ladera Linda Fields.

The girls’ U11 Great Whites and boys’ U11 Scorpions are also defending their undefeated records today in semifinal action.

All divisions will have semifinal games today except the boys’ U14.
