RHE Annual Parade Of Lights On Tonight Holiday Season • Peninsula residents are set for today’s annual parade and a wide variety of holiday shows and events this weekend and next.

By Nina Li As the holiday season approaches, the City of Rolling Hills Estates prepares its annual Parade of Lights to showcase the many different groups in the Palos Verdes community.

Parade Grand Marshal this year is tennis professional Tracy Austin.

The Community Grand Marshal is citizen of the year Jackie Crowley, and the Celebrity Grand Marshal is actor and Peninsula High School’s football coach, Larry Joe Campbell.

The parade features performances from various high school and middle school bands, Boy and Girl Scouts, cheer teams, floats, equestrians and antique cars.

“I grew up in a small town in Northern Michigan, and we had parades and fairs, and we all loved and supported them,” Campbell said. “I am most look-

ing forward to the community coming out and having fun, waving, laughing and taking in the joy of the holiday season. I not only love this time of year, but also the small town feel of our community and the interaction among one another.”

While the groups march down Silver Spur Road and Deep Valley Drive and through the Promenade on the Peninsula, judges will be watching and once the parade is over will distribute awards to the parade units.

Along with the judges and hundreds of spectators, the parade will be filmed on Frontier FiOS Channel 39 and Cox Cable TV Channel 35, with parade announcers Michele Swanson, Brenda Barnes and Mike Whitehead.

Peninsula High’s cheer, song and pep squads will be walking in the parade along with other high school and middle school groups.

“I am really excited to be performing in the Parade of Lights because it is a tradition,” Ana Willoughby said. “It really gets us in the holiday spirit and is a great way for our team to bond together.”

Peninsula’s marching band will also be performing as they do every year, bringing some holiday season songs along with them. This year the Palos Verdes High School marching band, as well as middle school musicians, will join the parade.

“It is really exciting to be playing with PV High band in the parade because I am able to see some of my friends who had gone to that school,” said Kevin Hirokawa. “Also, having some intermediate school band member’s play with us is a great opportu-

nity to have the kids exposed to what they could expect if they were to join the marching band of one of the two schools.”

Along with the band performances, many volunteers from Las Hermanas, Los Hermanos, Assisteens, Las Ninas, and more will be there. The volunteers carry banners along the parade route and make sure the event runs smoothly.

“I am really excited to be volunteering in the parade,” said Loren Kim. “I

PV Runners Reach End Of Race X-Country

• The Palos Verdes High cross country team races toward finals.

By Shelby Ponce Another day and another CIF finals race in Riverside for the Palos Verdes High School cross country varsity teams on Saturday, Nov. 18.

PVXC varsity teams ran another 3-mile course to determine if they would compete in the state finals in Fresno on Nov. 25.

Senior runner Grace Catena explains:

“The team has improved a lot since the beginning of the season. We didn’t know who was going to be racing varsity, and I was the only returning runner from our varsity team last year.

What was very impressive was a lot of our girls stepped up and have filled in those spots and have really committed.

‘We have all become determined and, because of that, this team has come together. Our goal as a team going into the race was to win. We knew that we’ve trained hard and that we could win if we raced hard and did our best. The race experience was fun because it was a flat course. Unfortunate-

ly we did not have our best race. Even though we got second, under the conditions that we raced, I am very proud of my team considering three girls fell and had to get back up and keep fighting for every spot.”

Both varsity teams, with strong second place team finishes, qualified for State.

Catena (fourth place overall) and sophomore Samantha Steman (fifth place overall) stuck together throughout the race and finished side by side with times of 18:10.0 (Catena) and 18:11.4 (Steman). Senior Samantha Cohen finished 31st not long after with

a time of 19:28.2.

Bella Martinez, one of the only freshman girls racing on the varsity team, placed 43rd clocking in at 19:43.2.

Junior Natalie Watson finished with an incredible time of 19.55.7 and came in 57th place.

Only three milliseconds behind an opponent from Whittier, and placing 78th, freshman Gabi Collatos finished strong with a time of 20:19.3. In 91st place, McKenna Paulson clocked in at 20:31.4.

The PV boys, also ranking second, showed an extravagant performance in their race. Nate Lantz, Wade Nygren and Ian Irish were Palos Verdes’ top three finishers. Lantz placed 6th overall in 15:20.3. Nygren, very close behind, had a time of 15:32.6 and placed 14th.

Placing in 22nd, Irish stopped the watch at 15:44.3. In 43rd place, William Teets finished with a time of 16:03.2.

Brandon Farnsworth, tagging right behind came in 48th and clocked 16:07.2.

Seconds away from Farnsworth was Ryan Shikiya who finished 50th and at 16:12.5. In 76th place, Tate Nygren hit the finish line in 16:26.8.

Sea Kings Boys, Girls Take 4th In State State Finals

Not long after Thanksgiving Day, the Palos Verdes High School cross country runners were at it again, taking their racing talents to State Finals at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Palos Verdes boys finished in 4th place as a team. Ian Irish was the first finisher from Palos Verdes, placing 24th and hitting the finish line in 16:19.20.

Irish led his teammate, Wade Nygren, who finished close behind him, placing 29th and finishing in 16:23.40.

William Teets followed and placed 36th. Teets clocked in at 16:29.10.

The next runner up from PV was Brandon Farnsworth, who placed 61st in 16:43.50.

In 88th place, Nate Lantz finished with a time of 16:58.50. A junior, Tate Nygren place 133rd with a time of 17:24.90. Running near (Tate) Nygren,

Ryan Shikiya placed 198th. Shikiya finished in 18:54.90, tailing right behind an opponent.

Palos Verdes girls also finished in 4th place. The first PV girl to run through the finish line was sophomore Samantha Steman. Steman placed fourth and clocked in at 18:16.30.

Grace Catena, following right behind, placed 8th and finished in 18:31.80.

Freshman Bella Martinez was the next PV finisher. Martinez placed 61st and ran the course in 19:58.30.

Gabi Collatos, another freshman on the varsity team, followed right behind Martinez and placed 76th. Collatos clocked in at 20:13.70.

Only seconds behind Collatos was senior Samantha Cohen, who placed 80th and finished in 20:16.90. In 101st place, Natalie Watson had a finishing time of 20:35.30. Watson lead her teammate McKenna Paulson to finish in 107th place and finish with a time of 20:39.10.

PEN Athletes Announce Early Commitments

• Peninsula High spring athletes announce their early commitments to college.

By Sarah Liu Five Peninsula High School seniors have committed to NCAA colleges to play their respective sports next year.

Michael Fuhrman and Matt Meskin have both decided to go to University of California schools to play

baseball. Softball players Nicole Hay and Madison Denton have committed to Washington University in St. Louis, and Erik Boisvert will be playing volleyball at Concordia University of Irvine.

For Meskin and Hay, the recruitment process started early. In Meskin’s freshman year, he began e-mailing schools with his basic personal information, as well as what position he played, and his game stats and videos.

Meskin also attended baseball

showcases where up to 100 scouts could watch players perform. In addition, coaches from schools such as Long Beach State attended his games to watch him play.

It wasn’t until his junior year that a school indicated interested in having him as a baseball team member.

Unfortunately for Meskin, later in the season he tore his ACL, causing teams to lose interest in him as a potential player. With the help of his dad and his coach, he began calling schools

again, and ultimately, Meskin chose to attend UC San Diego.

“I visited UCSD and was very interested because of the caliber of the school and baseball program there,” he said. “They were one of the schools I had been interested in since my freshman year. My goal since has been to go to a good academic school and play baseball, and UCSD was more than that. It is a great school, great location, and great baseball.”

Ted Vegvari, owner of PVNet at the Promenade on the Peninsula, is running a collection drive for blankets. You can come anytime between 10 a.m. and p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 to drop off blankets at PVNet. An additional drop-off day will be Sunday, Dec. 10, if necessary.

Operation Blankets of Love is not picky about donations but washed or clean blankets would be preferred.

Dog beds are also accepted because most dogs sleep on hard cement for months at a time.

According to Debbie Trejo, a volunteer who has helped with many blanket donations over the years, ‘’Just one furry blanket can make a difference for a dog in need.’’

Operation Blankets of Love is nonprofit and relies on donations to keep the program running.

Eileen Smulson is the founder of Operation Blankets of Love and has passionately run the program for 10 years. She emphasized that not only will dogs be warmer this winter, but blankets have been proven to improve the dog’s overall mood.

Smulson has noticed that, ‘’As soon as an animal has a comfort item they look happier and more relaxed, which makes the dogs more adoptable and saves lives.’’

Operation Blankets of Love also helps homeless dogs who are out on the streets by providing warmth and comfort through blankets.

PVIS Runners Race At Nationals

• PVIS 8th Graders compete in National Youth Championships against hundreds.

By Shelby Ponce A lot can be packaged in a small box. Eighth grade girls Grace Bonvechio and Anna Terrell proved this to everyone as they raced their hearts out in Westchester, Ohio, on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Terrell and Bonvechio had the chance to fly to Ohio and race the twomile cross country course at Voice of America Park.

Said coach Scott Reid, “The most important thing about nationals is that Anna and Grace, through their hard

work, had the opportunity to compete in this type of high-level environment, which is going to be invaluable for both of them down the road.

“I’m not sure we’ve ever had another runner come as far as Grace has these past three years, and we’re only starting to see what she’s truly capable of down the road with the right support and system, Reid said.

“Anna has an entirely different skill set from cross country. She’s a middle distance kid, half-miler, mile type, one of the top two or three in the state. The success she’s had this fall really tells you that she’s capable of some really special things on the track this spring and summer,” he said.

“The past few years the PVIS girls have really set a high bar of excellence.

If anything, with Anna and Grace, PVIS has taken it to another level and all the coaches are really excited to see what they do these next few years, whether at Peninsula or PV next year,” the coach said.

Terrell had a finishing time of 17:24.

She had an outstanding place of 55th for 13-year-olds and 93rd overall. Bonvechio had an incredible finish, as well, of 18:02.94. She placed 48th as a 14-year-old and finished 130th overall.

These young girls proved that anything is possible, even on a muddy course.

PEN Journalists Compete In Texas Field Trip • Peninsula High students participate in national journalism convention.

By Nina Li Nine Peninsula High School students from the Pen newspaper traveled to Dallas, Texas on Nov. 16 to attend the National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education Association sponsored event at which more than 4,000 journalists from all over the country gather to learn more about newspaper design, writing more interesting stories and conducting smoother interviews.

The convention featured hundreds of speakers who prepared professional learning sessions offering tips on how to meet deadlines, how to phrase attention-grabbing headlines and how to attract more readers.

The convention also featured writing competitions, best of show contests, critiques and awards convocations.

“It was overall a really great experience,” said Editor-in-chief Zoe Willoughby. “ I enjoyed learning at all the classes and being able to meet other students from other newspapers.”

On the first day of the convention, each Pen journalist was required to attend at least three classes. Some of the classes included “Up Your Interview Game”, “Deadlines Decoded,” “Color Choices: Smarter, Not Harder” and “Covering Conflict.”

The event had hundreds of other classes to choose from, applying not only to writers and editors of newspaper, but also for yearbook and literary magazine students as well as advisors.

“The convention was a really great experience, and I loved how we were able to learn about interesting topics at classes but also have downtime to bond with one another,” said Focus editor Liana Korotzer. “It was a muchneeded break from the stress of school, and we were able to hear from so many talented journalists.”

This year, Pen’s advisor, Jaymee Johnson and her father, Kelly John-

son, accompanied the students to Dallas. The group including Liana Korotzer, Christopher Guanzing, JungIn Kim, Anne Lee, Emily McGinn, Zoe Willoughby, Stella Yoo and Ana Willoughby stayed four days. During the times where classes were not in session, the students visited downtown Dallas and ate together at restaurants.

“Convention allowed us to expand our knowledge in terms of journalism and allowed us to attend various classes to learn skills that we can use to continually improve our newspaper,” said Student Life editor Emily McGinn.

“We were exposed to different newspapers across the country with different styles and ideas that can help us broaden our own ideas for our newspaper, which will definitely help us in the future,” she said.

One of the highlights of the trip was swapping newspapers with others from across the country and beyond.

From schools in Missouri to London, everyone was able to get new ideas from another school’s newspaper and see how to improve our own.

“This is my second convention, and it never ceases to amaze me,” Focus editor Lee said.

“Everything about the convention exceeded my expectations. The classes, the people and the energy all helped me leave with a stronger motivation to become a better journalist and use my words to make a change in the world; even if that means starting with the students who read our schools newspaper.”

PVIS Runners Celebrate Season State Champs • Palos Verdes Intermediate School cross country team held a season-ending banquet after an amazing season.

By Shelby Ponce Many would say cross country is not a team sport. One team, the Palos

Verdes Intermediate cross country team, proved this wrong, as expressed at a fun and eventful banquet dinner on Sunday, Nov.19, held in thanks to all the coaches and runners.

“PVIS Cross Country definitely has some of the best coaches ever.

I couldn’t imagine running with any other coaches than the ones we have.

They’ve helped us improve and encour-

age us to run faster, said eighth grade runner Julie Masuda at the banquet.

“Without Mr. Reid (Scott Reid, head coach) and the other coaches,” said Matsuda, “I don’t think I would like running as much as I do now. Mr. Ponce, Mr. Booth, Mrs. Espinoza, Mrs. Hardesty, and Mrs. Naehu always make our practices fun and worth it. Not only do they help us out but if we didn’t have them

around we wouldn’t have ran at State Championships.”

The PVIS cross country team coaches have put a great effort into coaching and really bring out their love for running to pass down to the young ones.

This season the Sea King 8th Grade girls and 6th Grade boys won Middle School State championships.

Team Selection:

. . . Continued from Page 5 For Hay, her recruitment journey started early as well, as she began emailing schools in 8th grade. By her sophomore year, she called and talked to coaches, and narrowed down her list of potential schools by key factors: a competitive softball program, a good business school with small class sizes, and a chance to be in a sorority.

Coaches from schools such as Dartmouth and Yale have attended games to watch her play, and while scouts at the games add pressure, she has gotten used to having eyes on her.

Student-athletes are tasked with juggling both schoolwork and sports, and both have come up with their own approaches as to how to handle it.

“I’ve learned over the years how to manage my time really well,” Hay said.

From doing homework in the car to studying during game breaks, Hay has made the most of the time that she has. In fact, she believes that by working out and going to practice, it has actually relieved her stress.

Schoolwork is always the first priority for Meskin, and he makes sure to put homework and studying first, and then uses the rest of his time for baseball.

Meskin’s and Hay’s road to recruitment was long and difficult, but with hard work and dedication, they were able to achieve their goals and make it to the next level.

Pumpkin Takes Over Fall Cusine And Taste craving pumpkin. They sell pumpkin cream cheese, seeds, soup, cookies, biscotti, ravioli, chips, butter, bars, and puree. Although I buy many pumpkin flavored foods, I still enjoy making pumpkin foods.

I recently tried a pumpkin smoothie. The smoothie contained ice, milk, pumpkin puree, nutmeg, cinnamon, maple syrup, and bananas. I loved this smoothie because it tasted healthy and was sweet, but the pumpkin was also not overpowering the other ingredients.

At Trader Joes, I discovered pumpkin ravioli. I cooked the ravioli and then made a sauce to go with it. I heated up

By Alexis Ferguson When fall season comes around, people might be thinking of the cold weather and sweaters. When fall season comes around, all I think about is pumpkin everything.

Whether I am eating pumpkin pie or pumpkin pizza, I am always craving pumpkin. To me pumpkin is the definition of fall. Every restaurant and grocery store have a pumpkin product of some sort.

Trader Joes is my-go to place if I’m

some olive oil with garlic and then added a can of diced tomatoes. I wanted a simple sauce to complement the flavors of the ravioli and to add more flavor to the dish. I love the flavor of pumpkin and how it makes me feel warm inside.

Pumpkin can be added to many different recipes. You could add pumpkin to pancake and waffle batter for a healthy breakfast. You can add pumpkin to pasta or pizza dough for a savory twist.

Pumpkin is so versatile and easy to work with. I hope I have inspired you to try some new recipes or I hoped I introduced you to some new items if you are a pumpkin fanatic like me.

Holiday Season Brings Entertainment . . . The Promenade Ice Chalet will host its annual Holiday Skating Show, “Christmas Spectacular,”

Saturday, Dec. 9 5 p.m. -7 p.m. 64 participants from its Skating Academy Program, ages four to 14-years-old, will be performing Holiday group numbers as well as solo performances. Coaches Nicolette Barba and Hayley Kidd, who were both National Level competitors, will perform a special duet number for the evening. The student and coaches have dedicated once a week for the past eight weeks to rehearse for the show.

Expect songs such as “It’s Beginning to Look like Christmas,” “Let it snow” and many more Holiday tunes. Currently the show is sold out.
