Peninsula High Fencer Trains For Success

• The unique but growing sport takes local student across the globe for international competition.

By Katie Hageman Maverick Doherty is not your typical high school athlete. Rather than participating in one of the more popular sports, such as soccer or basketball, she is a fencer.

Doherty is a sophomore at Peninsula High School and has been fencing for four years at Salle D’Asaro Fencing Club in Torrance, with coaches Michael D’Asaro and Lancelot Dyke.

She was introduced to fencing by her neighbor whose son was passionate about the sport. When Doherty walked into the fencing club, head coach D’Asaro welcomed her and insisted that she try out.

Sea Kings Win State . . . The Palos Verdes High cross country program continues its decades-long heritage of national excellence.

PV Runners Win State Championship Cross Country

• Palos Verdes High girls’ cross country team win State championship, goes on to Nationals.

By Frankie Reid The Palos Verdes girls cross country team won the CIF State Championships in Fresno last Saturday. The girls, favored by a lot, lived up to that standard, winning the Division 3 race with 75 points.

They beat second place Esperanza High School by 81 points. The girls, led by Mazzy Genovese’s 10th place finish, were one of only 20 teams nationwide advancing to Nike Nationals (NXN).

This is the first time the PV girls have made it to the nationals as a team. Rebecca Mehra (now a senior at Stanford) made it three times to NXN as an individual. This is the third state title for the Palos Verdes girls and the second time completing the trifecta (winning Bay League, CIF SS, and CIF State Championships).

“Winning state was one of the best feelings in the whole wide world and to have done it with my best friends made it even more wonderful and meaningful,” said Genovese. “We feel so lucky and excited to have made it to NXN and it is really the cherry on top to end our season,” she said Genovese led the PV pack in 10th place; Grace Catena, the junior transfer from South High School, was 15th; senior Caitlin Stoner was 18th; senior Alex Regan was 24th, and the standout freshman Savannah Scriven was 25th.

Senior leader Olivia Polischeck was 49th and the injured senior Camille Hines toughed out another race finishing 66th.

“These girls are my family, so every moment with them was so special and enjoyable,” said Genovese. Winning CIF, winning state and making it to NXN!! I could only dream of doing that…and my dream came true,” said the sophomore CIF SS champion.

and even the dreaded hill known as Agony Hill.

When asked about what helped her thrive at State, Mazzy credited her success to training on hilly courses and huge hills like Agony.

“It made the State course much easier to run and gave me a leg up on my opponents who trained on easier courses,” she said Her positivity is not limited to the course; she has just as much praise for her coaches. According to Mazzy, “Coach Shapiro is an amazing coach that is just so motivating and inspiring.”

Although Mazzy appreciates many things about her coach”, she said. “The thing he does best is strike a balance with fun and work. “

“It just makes running more enjoyable, and I am very appreciative that he is my coach,” she said In addition to great coaches and a supportive team, Mazzy is also incredibly grateful for a supportive family. Her older sister, Kennah Genovese, was a member of the PV High cross country team before her graduation and has been a huge role model for Mazzy.

When asked about her relationship with her sister, Mazzy responded, “She is the most amazing and supportive sister you could ever meet. She is in college at the NYU Stern Business School, all the away across the country, but she always manages to find time to encourage me and tell me to run from the heart and have fun because that is ultimately the

The Bay Boys I Remember Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

• It’s time we talk about the infamous Bay Boys.

I’m at the age now where almost everything has happened “after my time.”

And what came “before my time,” happened a very long time ago.

I’m pretty sure I knew some of the Bay Boys growing up, but it was a very long time ago.

Margate in the mid-1970’s was a unique place. “Margate” for you young people and new arrivals - is now called Palos Verdes Intermediate School - PVIS. This is about Margate Intermediate 1976. A time and place far removed from PVIS 2016.

Time has passed Margate and the “Bay Boys.”

I drove down to Lunada Bay to take some pictures of the deconstruction of the surf castle. They were using jackhammers to break it apart.

The world-famous “Bay Boys” from the Lunada Bay area had allegedly built this rock and cement patio structure some 30 years ago, about 1986. The castle grew larger and more obtrusive over the years as the Bay Boys grew more affluent and to middle age.

They say the “Bay Boys” had been harassing outsiders for years on the waves before they built their cement castle.

The waves at the Bay were for locals only.

“Locals Only.” That’s Margate - 1976.

It was many years ago when I moved from the flat land of Lakewood and the black asphalt playground of James Madison Elementary school to the rural paradise over looking the Pacific Ocean called Palos Verdes Estates.

It was probably about 15,000 new homes ago and thousands of extensive remodels. It was a different time and a

different place.

It was back when the Bay Boys were kids. Like me.

Go to Senior League Field (now called George Allen Field) and stand at home plate and look toward third base and beyond. Imagine no homes or roads up that entire hill. Look down first base and beyond. Imagine no homes and no road, just acres of open fields.

Not that long ago, in the great scheme of things, PV Estates was a very rural and rustic community. Not anymore, of course.

The city seems compelled to cover the only open space left with wood chips.

But “back in my time” that side of the Hill was a very secluded place.

For young people growing up there at that time, their lives were far removed from the rest of the South Bay, geographically and socially.

I can see how, a very long time ago, the way residents of beach and surf enclaves that were once isolated and separate from the larger community would become very territorial and hostile to outsiders.

Fighting and posturing over real and perceived territories goes way back. Add to that the interpretation and justification of “surf culture” — things can get pretty weird.

It was a common sight back in the 1970’s to see packs of boys riding skateboards down Via Romero or Via Coronel when school was out at Margate. Those are steep streets and kids went down them fast with no helmets or pads.

It was a very carefree time for Peninsula youths. Few kids were hauling around 30-pound backpacks on their way to a daily tutor, and PV Estates had one, maybe two, police cars to patrol the whole city.

But all of that was a very long time ago.

You can’t go racing down Zumaya without a helmet anymore and PV Estates has more than a few police officers to patrol Paseo del Mar these days.

Bullying people over waves, vandalizing cars not from around here and general criminal behavior have consequences.

That behavior also had consequences back in the 1980’s and 90’s as well, but that was then and this is now. The attitudes have changed. The consequences now are real, and not a simple threat.

But that sense of local entitlement won’t go away overnight.

Vandalizing and setting fire to cars and equipment being used to take down the Bay Boys’ fort this week is nothing but the last act of defiance The changes have happened. You’re not living or surfing in isolation anymore.

It’s a big, wide open world. No more hiding inside your fort.

Panthers MUN Set Awards Record MUN • The Peninsula High Model United Nations team won nearly 60 awards in its most recent competition.

With more than 1,500 delegates competing from over 30 schools, Peninsula High students were able to take in nearly 60 total awards for a new school record.

The Panthers’ Modle United Nations traveled to Tustin High School to compete in a novice and advanced

conference. Delegates from Peninsula as well as students from Ridgecrest Intermediate were able to compete and win awards in nearly every committee in the conference including Advanced, Novice and Middle School committees.

In addition, Peninsula won the most research awards and highest overall performance in committees. Student advisor was Erika Hathaway and CoAdvisors Sam Shafiee, Ashley Zoeckler and Sally Gerich prepared the delegates well for the event.

Peninsula High students and Ambassador Girl Scouts, Kaitlyn Tang, Keilyn Yuzuki, Gigi Wargin, Sabrina Lee and Annie Benedict were selected to be members of the 2017 Tournament of Roses Troop and march in the upcoming Tournament of Roses Parade. Each year a new Troop is formed from selected Eagle Scouts from the Greater Los Angeles Area Council, and selected Gold Awardees (Girl Scouts) from the Girl Scouts of Greater L.A. Together, these Scouts join to form the “Tournament Troop” and are entrusted with leading the opening Flag Ceremony and carrying the banners announcing the award-winning float entries in the annual parade.

Sea Kings Soccer Setting Hot Chocolate Season Even Higher Goals Hits Peninsula Families Girls Varsity A Culinary Journey

Back for the holidays. This is a reprint from Alexis’ column that ran last year on the best hot chocolate you will ever have . . .

Hey, I’m back!!

In my last column, I mentioned that I would give you some advice on how to spruce up your hot chocolate this winter. I love coming home from a cold day at school and making a warm cup of hot chocolate. Delicious!

There are plenty of cold days in December and after a few days of the same old drink, the classic hot chocolate gets boring. I set off on a mission to find out how I can spruce up your hot chocolate.

Many people are busy during the

holiday season, so you can cheat by using store-bought packets of hot chocolate....but if you are really craving that rich, chocolate flavor, you can make your own with a cup of hot milk, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a dash of salt.

Combine and heat over a stove. Now you have a base that you can bedazzle.

One thing that pops into my mind when I think of chocolate is s’mores. I took my base for my hot chocolate and I piled on a mound of marshmallows. I whipped out my blow torch and toasted my marshmallows until golden brown.

I then took a graham cracker and crushed it over the top. You get the toasted marshmallow flavor with the gooey inside that makes for a delicious hot chocolate and never will you ever want to go back to a plain cup of hot chocolate.

When I think of some of my favorite holiday flavors, I think of peppermint.

One of my all-time favorite treats to make during the holidays is peppermint bark , which uses peppermint extract...leftover extract is a great flavor bomb to add to hot chocolate. Be careful not to add too much...a little goes a long way so add a drop at a time.

One thing that’s always lying around the house during the season is candy canes. Another way to get that flavor is to take a candy cane and stir your hot chocolate with it. The heat melts the candy cane and you decide how much peppermint flavor you want.

If you want to experiment with some other ideas, here are just a few: add some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to your base or add it to your whipped cream. Cut open a vanilla bean and scrape the pod into your base for a vanilla infused hot chocolate.

• The Palos Verdes High girls’ soccer team looks to defend its Bay League title and compete against D1 schools for a CIF championship.

By Michael Liu Victory was sweet last season when Palos Verdes High’s girls varsity soccer team clinched the CIF Southern Section Division two trophy under head coach Sean Lockhart.

The win was PVHS’s first CIF championship since the school reopened in 2002 and only the third in the history of the school.

This year, as defending Bay League champions for the past two years, “We are going for a threepeat,” said varsity associate head coach Jack Gidney.

Last year the team went on to the State Regional and finished as runners up. This year the team was bumped from D2 to D1 for playoffs so will face tougher teams.

“Last year was so special that it will be tough to top. We are taking it game by game this year,” said Gidney. “We would like to win the Bay League again, but it’s a tough league. After that we will see what happens at playoff time.”

Senior Victoria Henderson and juniors Jillian Arriola and Kaya Hawkinson are captains of the young team, with over half of the players new to the varsity squad.

“Last year seemed to work well in the way we approached it with the girls on and off the field so we will try to keep that rolling and keep the morale high and the chemistry of the group positive,” said coach Gidney.

Sailing

RHP Crew Sails To Compete . . .

The Rolling Hills Prep/Renaissance sailing team took fourth place overall in the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association state wide regatta hosted by UC Irvine in Newport Beach. Drea Keswater and Jacob Schnel took first place in their division. The Huskies competed in the silver fleet against schools 10 to 15 times larger than RHP and from as far away as San Francisco and San Diego. The five team members competing at the event were: Cade Morris, Drea Keswater, Jacob Schnel, Paul Hebert and Lawry Braslow.

PEN Veterans Club Honors Those Who Have Served . . .

For Veterans Day, the Peninsula High Veterans Club wrote thank you notes to military veterans to thank them for their service to our country. The celebration was held at Veterans Park in Redondo Beach. Club President, John Zuercher, delivered more than 50 thank you notes on behalf of the club to the head of the local American Legion Post. The club will be looking for more ways to thank the veterans for their service during this school year.

Peninsula High Stages Adult Drama With “The Laramie Project” The Peninsula High drama department will be staging The Laramie Project over the next two weekends. This important play is based on the true story of the 1998 murder of college student Matthew Shepard. The murder was denounced as a hate crime

PV Fusion, took second place at the North Torrance All American Turkey Tournament this past weekend. This is a significant achievement by the girls as the team has merged players from previous post-season teams.

Fencing Propels Peninsula Student Across The Globe

. . . Continued from Page 3 In regards to this initial greeting, Doherty said, “After a 10 minute introductory lesson, I knew I would come back and try it some more.”

Eventually, she did come back to the club to practice. She continued to go back because of how much fun she was having and because of the support she was receiving from everyone at the fencing club.

“Fencing is a sport that takes years to become good at, but I showed improvement that really excited my coach and my parents,” Doherty said. “I had so much fun at the club. Everyone there treated me like family. We were always laughing and welcoming new people with ease.”

Doherty enjoys the competitive individual aspect of the sport. She is able to rely on herself to win instead of relying on a team.

For those who are truly dedicated, several college opportunities can arise from a unique sport such as fencing.

Most of the Ivy League schools and Division 1 sports schools have great fencing programs and are consistently on the lookout for new fencers.

Many fencers end up going to excellent schools and this is certainly a possibility for Doherty.

In addition to the great social and learning aspect of fencing, it has presented Doherty with several rare opportunities. She has been able to travel to Hungary, Poland and Germany for international tournaments, and she might be traveling to Austria in the future.

When asked about competitions, Doherty said, “I proudly represent the United States at Cadet World Cups.

I also travel to many different states within the U.S. for national tournaments once a month.”

Doherty recently went to Konin, Poland and finished in ninth place out

of 120 fencers at a Cadet World Cup. She also recently went to Milwaukee for a North American Cup in the Cadet Women’s Sabre event and finished in sixth place out of 169 fencers in her age category.

“Fencing is a really incredible sport that has made me so much more independent, sociable, and proud of who I am and what I have accomplished,” she said

Not only is Mazzy super appreciative of her sister, she is also grateful for her parents and her dad in particular.

He was the one who initiated her love for running and trained her before PV High and before other programs came along. Although he doesn’t train her anymore, her dad still plays a key role in her running career.

According to Mazzy, “My dad gives me insanely amazing love, support, and advice on a daily basis, and is always there for me if I do want or need help. I couldn’t be more grateful for an incredible dad like him.”

With support and love behind her, Mazzy prepares to go and take nationals by storm with hope and confidence in the team’s success. She said, “I am very confident in our team and our abilities, and I really don’t think there is another team quite like us.”

Nationals are going to be a challenge for the runners, but Mazzy has faith in their ability to shine at the elite meet.

“I always have a positive attitude and believe we will win even if the odds are stacked against us because of all the talent and hard work on the team. Anything can happen, she said.

Looking forward to the future after cross country season ends, Mazzy does not expect to stop running. She plans on moving right into track season, where she will continue to take the running world by storm and make her team and her school proud.
