• Peninsula middle school runners win multiple championships at State meet.

Palos Verdes Intermediate School girls extended their major titles winning streak, completing their quest for a “five-peat” as the Sea Kings won two team crowns and just missed a third at California State Middle School Cross Country Championships on Nov. 15.

Chadwick’s Becket Wren won the 8th grade boys title on a day when 15 Palos Verdes Peninsula runners registered Top-10 finishes in six races on the flat and dusty 2-mile layout at the Riverside Cross Country Course.

PVIS finished in the top three in all five of the team divisions in which it entered full squads, posting the top overall team time in four of those races.

Educators Of The Year Honored

Recognition

• Local educators honored at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

The 38th annual Educator of the Year celebration, held Nov. 7 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, honored nine Peninsula educators for their outstanding teaching and professional contributions to their schools and colleges.

The honorees included Allison Lehault from Palos Verdes Intermediate School, Kimberly Tatman from Chadwick School, Michelle “Mimi” Cohen from Point Vicente Elementary School, Jonathon Agostino from Rolling Hills Preparatory and Renaissance Schools, Christopher Doughty from The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training, Janice Demarti from Peninsula Heritage School, Carrie Ellis from Soleado Elementary School, Dr. Larry Dunlop from Marymount California University and Vararat Chaiyont Kan from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.

Recipients were introduced by their respective school principal, head of school or college president, and then they talked about regarding their love of teaching and their unique approaches to their subject area and their students.

The response to getting this honor was best summed up in the words of the Chadwick School honoree, Kimberly Tatman, who said, “Each day I get to go work at a job I love, where I grow in profound ways, and where I’m surrounded by a group of inspiring educators. Being recognized for that work as Educator of the Year is both humbling

Top Educators Receive Recognition . . . Educators from schools across the Peninsula were honored at the annual “Educator of the Year” dinner.

For the last several years the event has been sponsored by Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club, under the leadership of Ms. Joan Behrens and Dr. James Hartman who chair the Educator of the Year Committee and also act as Masters of Ceremonies.

Harry Kitter chairs the Fund-Raising Committee that solicits sponsorship of the event from the broader business and educational community as well as Rotarians who all contribute to college, vocational and Stem scholarships.

These funds are then awarded annually from the Club Foundation to needy and capable students from the

Peninsula and the Los Angeles Harbor Boys and Girls Club. Over the last 10 years the Foundation has distributed $350,000 for such awards.

Each school hosts teachers, faculty and staff and parents to support their winner. This year approximately 250 people attended the event.

Every winner receives a gift carriage clock, an Educator of the Year pin, certificates and commendations from civic and government entities, and most importantly, a salute from their colleagues, students and community who are the beneficiaries of their significant contributions.

Turning 18 Is More Than A Number Big Birthday

Probably the most significant benefit granted to 18-year-olds is the ability to vote. They finally have the opportunity to make a difference for their future.

The 26th Amendment opened the door for more people to start voting, however, only about 13 percent actually vote.

Another big part of being 18 is registering for the military. Almost all male citizens of the United States are required to register with Selective Services.

Besides the big responsibilities, 18-year-olds are able to buy a lottery ticket, get an actual drivers license and many more activities that you would normally need parental con-

sent for.

For 18-year-olds in school, this means being able to sign yourself out and sign your own permission slips; basically you have become your own person, not just an association with your parents.

Eighteen is viewed as the time when we are supposed to somehow manifest into adulthood and take on the responsibilities that we did not have when we were 17.

Getting tried in court as an adult and being sent to prison instead of juvenile hall, having to be conscientious of the effects our actions could have on our life. Every decision we make from here on out will shape the path we take as we walk along the journey of life. With college rapidly coming

Panthers Love Team Basketball

• The Peninsula High girls’ basketball team is looking forward to a season of fun and competition.

By Nina Li As fall sports come to an end, many athletes are preparing for the upcoming winter sports season. Some of these include soccer, wrestling, waterpolo and basketball.

The Peninsula High girls’ basketball team is anticipating an exciting season with high hopes for many wins. Senior and captain Samantha Inana has been playing basketball since she was five years old, and has been on the varsity team since freshman year.

“I act as the bridge between the coaches and players, show positive leadership to teammates, and provide motivation for the team,” Inana said.

The girls practice two hours a day, Monday to Saturday. A typical practice consists of running, stretching, going over plays, practicing drills and scrimmaging.

“I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by a great group of girls, and I think we have the potential to have a very successful season,” Inana said. “My favorite part about playing is the competitive aspect and being around my friends.”

The 14-member varsity team is made up of both returning members as well as new members. Senior forward Triana Ng has been playing basketball for 11 years. With two ACL and meniscus surgeries, Ng has been through a lot, but still has the same passion and determination when it comes to playing with her team.

“I have very high hopes for our team,” Ng said. “I think we will go far this season. We might not be the tallest

We play with so much passion and put everything we have on the court. We definitely have a harder schedule this year compared to last year since we are no longer going to be playing against a couple of teams we would confidently beat in the past. But, everyone on the team is so talented and brings their own unique skill to the team that I am confident in us. Personally, I am extremely excited and sad for this season because it is my senior year.”

Sophomore Mia Yamada has been on the varsity team since her freshman year and has been playing basketball since she was six years old. As the point guard, she dribbles the ball up the court to set up for offense.

While there are many benefits in turning 18, and many new opportunities, we have to keep in mind the responsibilities that we have and be grateful for the people we have in our lives that constantly support us.

“I love the rush I get when I play basketball,” Ng said. “Basketball has always been a way for me to ignore the stresses of life and just focus on something I love.

“Another aspect I love is the teamwork. You have to rely on and trust your teammates, and I wholeheartedly do. I know that when I look back at my high school years, I will remember all my basketball memories and all the girls,” Ng said.

Local Athlete Follows Football Dreams Catching Up • Former local youth athlete makes a mark at Long Beach Poly High School.

Former Palos Verdes High student Shea Kuykendall led the Long Beach Poly freshman football team to an undefeated, 10-0, season this year.

The 14-year-old quarterback was also called up to varsity team for the Jackrabbits during the season.

Before the move to Poly, Kuykendall attended Valmonte Early Learning Academy, Lunada Bay Elementary, Ridgecrest Intermediate and Palos Verdes Intermediate schools.

He played youth football with the Tri-City Falcons in the PV Pop Warner league, and last year played with the combined PV/Carson Unlimited Team.

“Growing up in PV, I was very fortunate to have really good teams and private coaches who helped develop me as a quarterback from an early age, said Kuykendall. “My dream was always to play for a D1 high school and then, hopefully, play D1 college football.

“I loved going to school in PV. Great schools and lifelong friends. I only left to chase my football dream, and I appreciate all the support I have received,” he said.

Kuykendall took a long look and even played 7on7 for St. John Bosco and Serra high schools. However, after a meeting with coaches at Long Beach Poly, he knew the celebrated football school was the place for him.

“Very positive coaches who run an offense that really fits my skill set,” said Kuykendall.

“My big brother started playing QB late and has come so far. He will always be my idol. It takes a lot of guts to try for the brass ring and he has it,’” Shea said.

“It has been really exciting getting to hear about friends from both PV and Peninsula high doing so well in the playoffs this year. Really something to have both schools go so far.

By Jack Grimes People change their perspectives, and even their culture. A culture change is perfectly evident in the transition of Peninsula High’s football team from losing their entire program in 2015 to returning to the CIF championship this year.

This transformation was due to the merger of various factors that ultimately resulted in success. Although one game short of a championship ring, the Panthers proved their relevance this year and are prepared to compete for titles in the future.

I remember vividly writing a similar article three years ago

transition and possessed a vastly different tone – one of desolation and despair instead of hope and optimism.

As a player on the team that was disbanded, I will never forget the rush of despondency that overwhelmed me and everyone else in the room when we were told the news.

I don’t think anyone at that moment could have imagined that today we would be able to say that Peninsula had not only regained its football team, but they had also reached a CIF championship game for the first time in two decades.

The transition of the football program from loser to winner is

a result of the positive attitude of the players, fans and new head coach David Young. Coach Young entered the program with one mindset – not to simply take the field again, but to actually compete for a championship.

His attitude was immediately adopted by the players, who surprised everyone, including myself, by reaching success so quickly. We can only wait and see how far this attitude takes Peninsula football.

Jack Grimes was a senior captian of the 2015 Peninsula High football team and is currently at student at UC Berkeley.

2015 Freshman Get Their 2018 Wish Seniors

By Lily Shah It’s been a remarkable season for Panther Football. The players exceeded all expectations when they made it to the final round of CIF against Western High School this past Friday.

Although it was a heartbreaking loss, the Panther family could not be more proud of this team. Going from a canceled season in 2015 to an extended season in 2018 is evidence of tremendous growth and the hard work that our team has put in over the course of this year.

Beyond being proud of this team, we could not be more thankful for the experience they gave the Zoo. We had the opportunity to experience Friday Night lights, wear are black and gold with exuberant passion, and cheer like we never have before.

PEN Football Has Restored The Roar The Comeback

• The Peninsula football team played in the Division 11 CIF finals after having the program canceled just three years ago because of not enough players.

By Daniel Meyerhof Panther football is officially back.

After dropping the program three years ago, the Peninsula Panthers finally competed in Bay League this year. The team finished the year 6-4 in the regular season, including a 3-2 record in the Bay League.

The Panthers qualified for the Divi-

sion 11 playoffs as an eight seed and fought their way to the championship game, coming just one game short of a CIF championship. Regardless of the outcome of the final playoff game, the future is once again looking bright for Peninsula football.

The team was very close this season on and off the field. Peninsula will miss all its seniors who stuck with Panther football even when their season was cut short in 2015.

This class of seniors had to grow into leaders to get this young, inexperienced team to the CIF championship. Two captains, quarterback Ethan Gretzinger and running back Ethan Han, became the team leaders.

a captain’s role, Han replied, “It was a great experience for me to help the younger kids. The biggest challenge was having to face a lot of diversity and helping the team’s confidence.”

Han had his best season of his career this year and led the Panthers on and off the field.

The seniors understandably are leaving behind memories and a group of guys considered to be family.

Said Gretzinger, “Football gave me a family who looked out for one another. Each person was different, but we all cared about one another.”

Many players feel the same and think of the team as a family. Nearly 50 players spent the last 6 months practicing together nearly every day. The bond that was created this year was extra special because of the extra four playoff games. The experience this year was like no other for these foot-

ball players.

The Panthers will have to work hard this offseason to return to the playoffs and compete for a Bay League title.

The Panthers have talented junior quarterback Jack Haworth returning along with many other starters. This young group of Panthers now has playoff confidence, and they know what it takes to compete.

Two-way starter Luke Seymour will be entering his senior season and his third year on varsity. When asked about what needs to take place next year to return to the championship game, he said, “ Everyone needs to continue to work hard throughout the offseason and to remain close on and off the field.”

The Panthers are proud of their season but are hungry to compete next year.

Future Kings & Queens Set For Finals

• The last of the semifinal matches are scheduled this weekend with King & Queen of the Hill championship games slated for next week.

Finishing the regular season in first place does not guarantee entrance into the King and Queen of the Hill tournament next weekend at Ladera Linda Fields. Several divisions are holding semifinal matches today so there is still plenty of opportunities for upsets and surprises.

PVIS’ overall time of 1 hour, 8.42 seconds was more than two minutes ahead of the combined time for San Gorgonio, which finished second with 75 points. El Rancho was third at 112 with Chadwick sixth at 149.

Lee covered the course in 13 minutes, 20.2 seconds and was followed by a tight pack of Sea Kings teammates.

Landon Corman was 10th (13:37.6), Emilia Oginski 11th (13:44.7), Amber Chen 14th (13:57.0) and Zofia Lok 15th (14:02.5). Priscilla Rose MenMartin 38th (15:00.6), Riko Negishi 46th (15:19.1) and McKenna Butcher 48th (15:19.1) rounded out the PVIS lineup.

Chadwick’s Zoe Stephens (13:23.0) and Claire Buchi (13:29.4) were seventh and eighth.

Wren broke away from a group of four runners just before the mile mark and then stretched his lead all the way to the finish line for an 11:16.4 clocking.

PVIS’ Matthew Farnsworth was fourth in 11:42.3. Chadwick was seventh in the team standings.

The Sea King 7th grade boys, plagued by illness and injuries in recent weeks, narrowly added the State team title to their Mt. SAC victory earlier this season and a State 6th grade team crown last year with a textbook example of team running.

PVIS and San Gorgonio both finished with 40 points with the Sea Kings winning on the tie-breaker by having the first sixth runner across the finish line. Cross country team scores are based on the finishes of the first five runners, with the No. 6 and 7 runners bumping down runners from other teams in the team scoring.

Sea King Alex Naehu secured 3rd place with a late charge, finishing in 12:04.7. Peter Chang and Michael Mackiewicz also joined Naehu in the

Top 10. Chang’s aggressive running brought him across the line in 12:14.8 for sixth place while Mackiewicz clutch effort in the final 300 meters was good for ninth in 12:25.9.

PVIS then wrapped up the title with a tight pack of four runners. Oliver Macfarlanc was 15th (12:36.3), Tobias Rodriguez 16th (12:37.0), Aaron Murillo 17th (12:42.0) and Max Cibort 18th (12:44.8), all of them finishing ahead of San Gorgonio’s fifth runner.

The Sea Kings 7th graders combined time of 1:01.58 was more than 30 seconds faster than that of the winning 8th grade boys team.

The PVIS and San Gorgonio rivalry produced an equally close and dramatic finish in the next race, the 7th grade girls. Again the two schools finished deadlocked, 47-47, this time San Gorgonio winning on the tie-breaker although the Sea Kings posted the faster overall time.

PVIS standout Natalie Wang’s blazing second mile landed her in third place in 13:28.1. Jordan Hernandez sixth (13:46.1) and Riley Padian ninth (14:08.5) joined Wang in the Top 10.

Arianna Sheldon 20th (14:41.9) and Tara Timm 28th (15:00.5) rounded out the Sea Kings top five.

PVIS’ Madison Navarra capped an outstanding rookie season with runner-up finish in the 6th grade girls race but San Gorgonio’s depth was too much for a banged up Sea Kings squad.

San Gorgonio held on for a 49-57 victory against PVIS despite a late charge by the Sea Kings.

Behind Navarra, Addison Lundstrom (14:24.4), Trinity McKenny (14:28.6), Kate Sherry (14:42.5) and Eto Uchiyama, running for the first time in more than two weeks because of a knee injury, (15:31.0) went 10th, 11th, 13th and 26th for PVIS. Sea King Robert Michael matched Navarra’s second place finish in the 6th grade boys race (12:51.8). Mason Condello was 10th (13:35.6) as PVIS took third in the team standings. ­— email reports
