Sea Kings Rule The Water Water Polo

• The Palos Verdes High boys’ water polo team had a great run through Bay League and CIF playoffs.

Can’t Win If You Can’t Score . . .

PV senior goalie Matt Noland kept the Sea Kings in every close contest.

As the 2019 fall sports season comes to a close, the Palos Verdes High boys water polo team can look back at a fantastic season, advancing all the way to the CIF semifinals.

“We reached the farthest we have in CIF in a long time,” senior Matt Noland said.

The Sea Kings finished undefeated in the Bay League at 5-0 and had 15-4 record overall, with tough competition early in the season.

Some team members had been playing water polo together since fourth grade, allowing for a great team relationship to exist.

“The thing that made this team so successful was team chemistry. The team cohesion was great just because of the bond we all share, “ Noland said.

PV Water Polo Goes Deep Into CIF . . . Palos Verdes High

The team found easy wins in the first two rounds of playoff action but maintained their focus and work ethic.

“Our first two games were easier games, but we didn’t go in complacently and actually had a tight game in round 2,” Noland said.

The boys won their first round game

against Murrieta Valley by a score of 22-1 and won the quarter finals against Los Alamitos, 12-9.

“I think we performed really well in semis, just a few slip ups in the final game cost it,” Noland said.

“Overall, I would say the team had a phenomenal season,” Noland said.

Lady Golfers Help Expand The Game Golf • Young golfers help expand the game for boys and girls.

By Timothy Niemann Golf has been stereotyped as an old man’s game. But the game is not what it used to be.

Nowadays, just about every type of person plays the game, from old men and women to the youngest of boys and girls.

The LPGA (Ladies’ Professional Golf Association) was founded in 1950, but, back then, there were just 13 members.

Now it is the most competitive female golf tour in the world, with more

than 500 competing members across 32 countries, with thousands more competing for a spot on the tour.

The one place where female golf may be lacking is in the youth spectrum. According to the National Golf Foundation, 2.5 million juniors played golf in 2018 in the United States, but just 36 percent of those were girls.

Junior golf is for golfers under the age of 18. The 36 percent is up from 15 percent in 2000, but it is well short of being equal to the number of young boys playing golf.

And of all golfers in the United States in 2018, just 23 percent of them were women.

Many youth organizations, such as

US Kids Golf and the Junior PGA, are promoting youth golf to both boys and girls.

And numbers show that youth golf in the United States is on the rise for both boys and girls. Many youngsters are introduced to the game by playing with their fathers.

I talked to Keira Wang, a golfer at Palos Verdes High School, about how she got into the sport. She started playing at age nine and started playing competitively almost immediately.

“I first got into golf as something my whole family could do together. From then on, I just fell in love with the game,” Keira said.

She hopes to play at a Division 1 college and play in the LPGA after that.

I also talked to Megan Gormley, whose father, Jim Gormley, is the Director of Golf at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Megan said, “I started playing competitive golf when I was around 12 years old, but I grew up playing the sport so I was very familiar with it.”

Megan’s father reeled her into the sport, and next year, she will begin playing at Georgetown University and hopes to go professional someday.

Golf seems to be a family game. If the father or mother plays it, there’s a good chance their children will play it also. But the game needs to reach the kids whose family has never played golf.

The game would be better if everybody played.

Local Dancers Shake Up Camp COED

• Peninsula High’s Camp COED attracted a record number of young participants.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s COED Choreo team hosted its annual fundraiser and community event, Camp COED, Nov. 2., attracting 84 third-to-12th graders from and neighboring schools.

Because the team had access to both the dance rooms and the main gym at the high school this year, attendees were able to enjoy their classes without worries over physical space. This served as an upgrade for the event’s organizers because space was an issue last year without access to the gym.

Camp COED began with introduction speeches, followed by an all-at-

tendee warm-up led by the varsity captains.

After some icebreakers and games to allow participants to ease into their surroundings, the camp was split into two sessions, with a break between the two.

The first session broke off into three classes, beginner, intermediate and advanced, where students learned pieces from varsity team members. Two choreographers were assigned to each class.

The classes then showcased their pieces to the other classes in the main gym. After the break, all attendees took a masterclass taught by COED Choreo varsity coach Danyel Moulton.

Later on, the participants performed again, this time to friends and family, to showcase the pieces they learned from the first and second sessions. After their

“COED Choreo always strives to take risks and try new ways to expand our program and reach the community [through Camp COED],” senior and varsity captain Chrislyn Tseng said. “From providing a masterclass taught by coach Moulton to selling concessions, we were able to create a great experience for the participants.”

The increased number of attendees compared to previous years gave members like Tseng hope for the future of COED Choreo. As Camp COED, along with its fundraising purposes, serves as an advertisement for the team, attracting a mass of participants was crucial.

This year, the pool of entrants ranged from PV third graders to dancers from neighboring school districts, which gave members an opportunity to promote their team to a larger audience.

This widespread attraction was due to the publicity efforts COED Choreo members contributed toward Camp COED through their social media platforms.

Watching potential future [COED Choreo] members [come and dance with us] was inspiring and exciting to see,” senior and varsity member Daren Chun said. “I feel as if the path toward the next generation of this team has already been paved.”

With the range of participants achieved with the success of the publicity of Camp COED, the future of the team is looking bright, and members are looking forward to what the future will bring to COED Choreo.

“I am excited to see how the captains decide to [run Camp COED] next year,” Tseng said. “But, no matter what, [this event] will always serve to recruit potential dancers for Peninsula’s dance program and remain a fun experience for both dancers and non-dancers.”

Fall Ball Ends With Championship Game Softball • The Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ Softball League finished Fall Ball action and held a U14 Tournament at Cornerstone School last week.

The PV U14 team defeated Baldwin Hills and North Torrance to reach the championship game against Santa Monica where they took a loss.

Mavericks Battle For Championships Pop Warner • The Palos Verdes Football & Cheer season has ended with undefeated teams and division titles.

The PV Mavericks Mitey Mite tackle team finished the season undefeated and Wescon D2 Champions.

The 6-7 Division was won by the Black Mavericks, coached by Erik Rakowski and Kyle Clinton.

Coached by Lei Ditch and Ryan Ritcheske, the Red Mavericks defeated the Black Mavericks to finish undefeated and champions of the 8-9 Division.

The White Mavericks, coached by Erik Rakowski and Brett Moulton, also finished the season undefeated and champions of the 10-11 year-old Division.

Second Season Begins With Playoffs

• AYSO playoffs and the quest for a King and Queen of the Hill championship is underway on the Peninsula.

There are still teams playing for an undefeated season. Frosty Pink Avalanche, Blue Waves, Mc n Cheese, LA Galaxy and the Blue Lions still have the opportunity to finish the season without a loss.

Upsets and surprises have already taken over the boys’ 11U Division with the Living Dead taking down Titan Arum for their first win of the season.

The Raptors will face the Winter Melons, and the Flaming Peashooters will face the Living Dead today in semifinal action.

With the regular season over, S.C. Internacional scored 56 goals in the boys’ 14U Division followed by the boys’ 9U L.A. Galaxy, which scored 55 goals in nine games.

The top defense in Region 10 are the Blue Waves, which has allowed only one goal this season.

Final Chance For A Crown . . . . Crystal Palace finished the regular season with a 5-3 win over S.C. Internacional in boys’ 14U Division action at Highridge Park and will meet again in playoff action next week.

Girls Battle For A Crown . . . Ernie Howlett Park will be busy this weekend with girls’ 9U and 10U playoff action taking place.
