Explore The World At "Art In Our Library"

Did you ever think you could take a walk through an autumn-colored forest while at the same time pass by a snowcovered barn? Or watch elephants by the water’s edge in Africa and the sun setting from an exotic beach in the South Pacific?

Can you look at life from 68 different angles in a matter of minutes?

Yes, you can if you peruse the photographs, paintings, and mixed-media artwork hung on the walls throughout the Peninsula Center Library. The library is currently showcasing the work of 68 local artists in the annual community show, “Art in Our Library,” which is up until Dec. 27. (Please note that the library will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.) Sixty-eight artists have captured life’s little, but precious, moments. Through the use of color, lines, and shapes, these artists beg us to enter their landscapes, still-lifes, gardens, and portraits and ex-

plore their worlds, and by doing so our own inner beings. They ask us to question what we know and seek another perspective.

Karen Wickham is one of the 68 artists participating in this year’s juried exhibit. Her painting “Irene Swimming” won the second-place award. Her life was shaped early on by a visit to a San Francisco museum with her father; a portrait of a barmaid by Frans Hals was particularly influential.

“She wore a tight bodice over a white blouse, red cheeks and the familiar features of a Northern European, so like some faces in my own family,” she explains in her online artist statement.

“As my father moved me closer to the painting I saw the face break down into geometric patterns of paint on canvas. I remember being particularly taken with the rectangle of white paint representing a highlight on the barmaid’s nose. When we moved back, the illusion of the girl reappeared. It was magic.”

Wickham’s paintings have that same magic. Close, blue and white shapes – swirls – stand out on the canvas. Back, those swirls are the movement of water

as a determined “Irene” cuts through it.

All of the works in the show evoke emotions from the viewer. Blue-ribbon winner Hyewan Yoon’s “Abandoned Structure” series, a set of meticulous pen drawings, are lifeless, yet full of life. Like life itself, it all depends how you look at them.

Rather than fighting the masses at crowded shopping malls this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, why not spend quality family time at the library, traveling the world through the eye of an artist?

Belated congratulations Panorama staff congratulates Linda Reid and Suzanne Seymour on their election to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s Board of Education. Reid earned back her seat in the Nov. 3 election as the top vote-getter, winning 31.82 percent of the vote. Reid

ran to retain the seat she was appointed to in late 2014, fulfilling Erin LaMonte’s term following her family’s move to Texas.

Challenger Seymour followed close behind Reid with 30.86 percent of the Palos Verdes vote, earning her the second spot. Seymour, along with Barry Rondinella and Dawn Lenzie, was vying for Reid’s seat as well as that of longtime board member Larry Vanden Bos who chose not to run for re-election.

Reid and Seymour will be sworn in during the board’s annual reorganization on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Also, the Peninsula Education Foundation brought more than 4,000 walkers to the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Oct. 25, breaking the nonprofit’s previous records. This year’s walk raised more than $1.4 million, exceeding Skecher’s $1.2-million goal. PEF will receive a portion of this money, based on the number of participants the organization signed up for the Walk. This money will help support numerous programs, including STEM and world languages, for students in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.

Palos Verdes High got an unexpected bye week before the team’s first playoff matchup, when Peninsula High forfeited the rivalry game.

The Sea Kings did not use the week to rest, but continued to practice and build upon the momentum from winning its fifth straight Bay League championship.

“Even though we didn’t necessarily know who we would play in the first round, we took the extra time to work on all the little things and try to perfect them, such as blocking schemes and route running,” said senior Connor Buckle.

The bye week practice evidently was helpful as Palos Verdes displayed an explosive offense and strong defense in a 45-7 victory over Simi Valley.

“The bye week let us work on our own team and focus on the things we needed to get better,” said junior Nicolas Alessi.

The Sea Kings take on Pacifica High School in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs The Sea Kings know that the road to a CIF championship will not be easy.

In a single game elimination playoff format, every game could potentially be the team’s last, and this is particularly meaningful to seniors.

“We feel a responsibility to lead the younger guys and leave a legacy, “said senior Joe McGuinness. “We know that most of us will never play another down after this season, and so we cherish each moment and try to make the most of every game,” said McGuinness.

The Sea Kings hope to end their season with another CIF championship, which would be the team’s third in four years.

“We just have to survive and advance now. I don’t really think about lasts, all you have to think about is how you can prepare to win the next game,” said Buckle.

Quarterback Jake Nolls opened the Sea Kings’ CIF playoff run with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Joe McGuinness, and Palos Verdes was off and running in the hunt for its second consecutive CIF title.

The 45-7 route of Simi Valley, at Mira Costa, moved PV along to its second playoff game against Pacific High School from Oxnard on Friday.

After that 50-yard bomb on the first play from scrimmage, the Sea Kings rolled. Nolls connected with tight end Shane Irwin for a two-yard touchdown pass.

Then Nolls extended the lead to three touchdowns with a swing pass to running back Adison Umrarong for the score.

Umrarong ended the night with 81 yards receiving on only three catches.

Along with the stellar performances by Umrarong and Nolls, junior running back Robert Gilbertson added 81 yards rushing on 8 carries, and a touchdown. Nolls finished up going 9 for 13 with 184 yards passing.

After the game Nolls said,” I think we, as an offense, and also as a team, showed some flashes of strong execution. Hopefully we are going to be able to carry it into the upcoming rounds of playoffs.”

The offensive line played a major role in the Sea Kings’ offense against Simi Valley. PV executed excellent pass protection, which gave Nolls time to get his passes off.

Leading the line is senior center Danny Schultz.

Evolving Final Thoughts On Hill Rivalry Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

• The traditional Hill rivalry football game last week only lacked the game, but it had plenty of everything else.

It was late Tuesday night when I began to think about how I would approach this “crazy talk” column. Then I got an email from long-time Youth Sports News/PANORAMA reporter Duncan Reid.

Many years ago Duncan was the little boy who tugged on my shirt during a 4th Grade PVBA basketball game at the Miraleste gym. He asked if he could write for the paper.

I said yes, and his byline has been in and out of the paper ever since.

So I’m going to run his editorial.

Though unlike the last “student editorial”- we did some editing. Not sure if his story will make the cover of the Breeze.

I’m not in charge of that paper.

So here we go The students at Palos Verdes High and the students at Peninsula High are a little different. One school is more into football than the other.

OK! That’s it. We’re done. Nothing left to say. Everyone can go home now.

Oh, how I wish it was that easy.

Peninsula High has some very fine athletes. Just not enough of them play football. They are competitive with its rival Palos Verdes High in all other sports and levels - except football.

Like the PV High football program, the Peninsula High swim program dominates the Bay League and goes deep into CIF competition. The Peninsula High girls’ tennis team lost a match this season - for the first time in more than 50 matches.

However, the Peninsula High football program has been limping along for the last several seasons, and it finally fell down this year — forfeiting the final three games of the season because the program did not have enough healthy varsity players.

If they had five more healthy football players ­— they would have limped through the final games of the season without a forfeit.

If they had 10 more . . . 20 more . . . But they didn’t. They didn’t last year and they didn’t the year before.

It is a program that will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. And I really don’t know if it’s going to happen.

Bringing in the temporary lights for next season might help. It will be exciting, novel and most of the community will be behind it.

The key word here is “temporary.” Because as it stands right now, Peninsula

PVIS Student Set For Cooking Fame Good Food • Love of cooking sends young Peninsula resident on a worldwide journey of cooking and a television appearance.

Alexis Ferguson, a Palos Verdes Intermediate School seventh grader, will be competing on “Chopped Junior” on Tuesday night, Nov. 24 on “Food Network”.

The 12-year old flew to New York City over the summer to film an episode of the new television series, modeled after “Chopped,” which is in its 25th season.

“Chopped Junior” premiered on Oct. 27, and is hosted by Ted Allen, who also hosts “Chopped.”

High does not have enough athletes to field a varsity football team next fall.

We know the school will do what it can to fix that and make it happen, but in the long run there might not be enough football players on the Peninsula to sustain two competitive high school football programs.

Well, actually that’s not true. There are plenty of exceptional football players on the Peninsula for two schools.

But given the choice (which they are) student-athletes who wish to play football are choosing PV over PEN by a wide margin.

Giving students a choice, that’s fine.

That’s the way it’s been set up, and I see no reason why that will not continue. It’s what the board and administrators who set this all up wanted. Choice - and the residents are making choices.

Other than members of our local school board, I doubt there is anyone on the Hill that hears more about the perceptions (true or false) of what one school has about the other school more than myself.

I generally agree with everyone and nod my head “yes” because I really don’t get all the angst and emotion that surrounds this rivalry.

When I went to school here, it was generally acknowledged that these were the finest schools in the state. And everyone was fine with that. We didn’t need some

Sea Kings Make No After School Snacks Apologies For Choice Food Blog 2gourmetgirls

• One final story on the experience of choosing between PEN and PV from a long-time PANORAMA writer.

By Duncan Reid I’ve written for this publication since I was in the fourth grade. Not until this week have I read anything false. The lack of fact checking in both the PV News and PVP Panorama last week leads me to write this article.

The other day, my AP US History teacher, Ms. Barton, talked about the concept of American exceptionalism, the belief that we are the greatest country on the planet because we are exceptional in everything that we do.

Walking across campus after class, I realized that my school, Palos Verdes High School, is a lot like this country.

We have a certain “PV Exceptionalism” as well.

We don’t just produce diplomas, but opportunities. Our culture doesn’t create student-athletes, but scholar-champions. We do not produce students who go through the system worried about GPAs or how many APs we take, and we take a lot, but students who engage the system.

Our exceptionalism takes kids like Davis Butler, a pretty good soccer player who came into PV High not knowing what he wanted to do, and turned him into a Boeing intern, a future UC student, and an integral member of an athletic team that holds the state record for consecutive state meet podium finishes.

Our exceptionalism also means that a kid like Kyle Messenger can be an anchor on Live at 205, the number one ranked high school produced TV show in the U.S., and a tight end on the CIF champion football team.

Here is where the false statements in Panorama and the PV News come in.

The articles claim that PVHS only sends the most teams to the CIF playoffs, only has teachers like Mrs. Barton with 99 percent AP test pass rates, and only sends stuff into space (I’m not sure what stuff, but important stuff) because we have it easy.

The articles say we have a lax administration, an easy schedule that allows everyone to complete homework in class, if we are even doing homework at all, and that we roll up to school everyday in our Porsches. We have better facilities and we are more laid back.

Really? A lax administration?

We’ve got a drug sniffing dog, and Dr. Park has improved the culture of our school.

An easy schedule?

How about a schedule that requires students to be attentive in two-hour classes or that allows for labs and engagement.

A schedule that only allows for sports as part of the school day every two days.

We roll up to school in Porsches?

Please. I roll up to school in a 2006 Honda Pilot or a 2009 Cannondale bike.

As for facilities, we don’t have a second gym or a new STEM wing or a new weight room or mock trial classroom.

Our PVIT program, the one that sends stuff into space, operates out of what is generously described as a shed.

Enrollment varies year to year, as most things do, but the reason more kids come to PV High some years is not because we are less devoted to school, but because these kids want to be part of a culture that is exceptional, in everything from the Academic Decathlon to Surf, from cross country teams to engineering, from the number of state championships to the number of AP courses offered, from APID to PVIT to AVID to SCROC. I chose PV High because of its AP social studies courses offered nowhere else in L.A. County and the chance to run for one of the top programs in the country. I am not going to apologize for that choice.

The bottom line: Palos Verdes High School is a place that wants its students to accomplish their highest goals.

Oh, and for the dropping football thing, in my view, as a sports fan, that’s the fault of the program’s coach and athletic director. Didn’t they realize last spring that the roster was small?

Every day after school I come home around 3:30 and stand in the kitchen for 10 min and decide what I should have for a snack. If this goes the same for you here are a few of my own ideas.

One of my all time favorites is peanut butter toast with banana and a drizzle of honey over the top. I toast a piece of bread, spread on some peanut butter, slice up a banana, and drizzle honey for a sweet treat.

Another great snack is nachos. I take a rectangular pan and lay some tortilla chips on the bottom followed by a layer of cheese and then maybe last nights steak, chicken or ground beef. Bake at 350 till bubbly or until the cheese is melted. Throw some avocadoes, tomatoes, cilantro on top or any topping that will satisfy your hunger.

Trail mix is a healthy snack and you can make a big batch and pack in lunches also the next day. I mix some nuts such as cashews and almonds in a bowl ( you can add many other types of nuts also) and toss in some dried fruit such as raisins. Another one of my favorites is a cheese platter. I lay out some sliced meats and cheeses on a plate along with some crackers and if I feel like it some apples or grapes. There are so many different ways to build your snack and you can experiment with new flavors and flavor combinations.

Whip up a quick guacamole with salt and pepper. You can also whip up a salsa with tomatoes and avocadoes served with chips.

Popcorn is a surprisingly healthy snack. Popcorn contains whole grain and has four grams of fiber per three cup serving. Popcorn is also a very filling snack. Every time my brother and I have the opportunity to watch a movie we always have to have popcorn. The one thing we look forward to besides watching he movie. My mom always makes fresh popped popcorn with a sprinkle of salt. My bother ends up eating a huge bowl so we usually don’t have leftovers. If you do end up with leftovers just add it to your trail mix or watch another movie.

New Season Begins With Playoffs AYSO

• Playoff action heats up this weekend with elmination games being played all over the Peninsula.

The long fall soccer season has hit the final home stretch with the season ending for U8 and under teams this weekend while playoff action begins in earnest for U9 and above teams.

Pitch Perfect and the Blue Dolphins both finished the regular season at 7-00 in the girls’ U9 conference. Spain and Ireland also finished the regular season with 7-0-0 records in the boys’ U10 conference.

The Tiger Sharks finished the regular season in first place with a 8-0-0 record in the boys’ U9 West Division.

• The annual Pony League Fall Ball season ended last weekend, with the Giants finishing in first place with an 8-1-1 record.

The Giants finished the season with a 14-9 win over the second-place Dodgers, the only team to tag the Giants with a loss.

Spring registration is open for Pony League and all four Peninsula Little Leagues. Tryouts for all the leagues will be held shortly after the New Year, with Opening Day in February or March.

PVIS Student Hits Big-Time With TV Show . . . Continued from Page 8

to 15 compete in the same Chopped arena but with a change in the primary colors, has the same challenges – transform a bright yellow basket of random ingredients into a dish that’s judged on creativity, presentation and taste.

“I really fell in love with cooking when I took a cooking class in Siena, Italy, where we made fresh pasta and ragu, soup, pork loin, and cantuccinis,” said Alexis.

Aside from the cooking class, Alexis is a self-taught chef, experimenting, playing around in the kitchen and watching her parents, who also love to cook.

Alexis developed her taste buds at an early age while travelling to places such as China, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

When she came home to Rancho Palos Verdes, she would to try to make some of the local dishes she enjoyed and incorporate the new spices she discovered.

attend cooking school in France, study restaurant management at Cornell University , and own her own restaurant and/or bakery (she also loves to bake).

Her fascination in cooking came at an early age, fueled by watching “Food Network” shows.

At 10, she started an Instagram account, posting instructional cooking videos. Last year, she started a cooking blog – www.2gourmetgirls.wordpress. com, combining her love of writing and cooking.

She has written about meeting her culinary idol, Thomas Keller (arguably the best American chef ) and how speechless she was when he signed her Bouchon Bakery cookbook and asked her questions about why she loves to cook.

When Alexis is not in the kitchen, she enjoys playing tennis, soccer, but mostly softball.

Most recently, she was part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ 12U Gold All-Stars team that won the LA/SB District Championships, took 7th place at States, and competed at the California State Games (Regionals) in San Diego in July. Her favorite position is left field.

Off the field, though, Alexis is a serious student, having just been accepted membership into the PVIS Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.

Alexis wasn’t nervous while filming the show, in which thousands of kids across the U.S. applied.

The application process consisted of completing a long questionnaire, phone and online interviews, and submitting a 5-6 minute video of her making pollo saltado with aji sauce – a Peruvian dish she loves to eat.

During filming, Alexis said that she wasn’t even aware of the many cameras filming around her. She was just focused on using the four ingredients to make a great dish and even forgot about the judges sitting there watching and critiquing, except when it came to judging time. That was a bit nerveracking, according to Alexis.

She cannot divulge the ingredients or the dishes she made but tune into “Chopped Junior” on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. on “Food Network. “ Times may vary depending on cable provider. #ChoppedJunior.

Lacrosse Players Ready For The Season Lacrosse Camp

• Hesse Park played host to the final day of lacrosse camp last week.

Peninsula kids of all ages have been practicing and playing lacrosse for the last five weekends at Hesse Park under the guidance of Palos Verdes High head girls’ lacrosse coach Marissa Hewitt.

Boy and girl players particpated in a series of drills and small scrimmages before making up teams and playing a full scrimmage.

All three Peninsula middle schools have popular girls’ lacrosse clubs that practice and compete during the school year.
