Grocery Shopping Just The Beginning Of Great Food

By Alexis Ferguson Don’t get me wrong, I have always loved Trader Joe’s, but since quarantine, my love has only grown stronger.

With many places closed, I seemed to find myself at Trader Joe’s whenever I had free time.

I used to walk in with my grocery list written in order as I ventured through the store, and I was out within 15 minutes. Now, the employees are begging me to leave. I browse the store slowly and look at every item. I am truly a kid in a candy store. They have the most fascinating products, and I want want to throw all of them into my cart.

Here is a tip: Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach, especially at Trader Joe’s. I assure you that you will buy half the store. Since I go to Trader Joe’s more often than I should, I find a variety of new products to try.

With the seasonal items and my new finds, I have many amazing recommendations.

I compiled some of my new favorite products from Trader Joe’s, so you too can create a deeper bond with this grocery store. Holiday products at Trader Joe’s may be the thing that saves 2020.

Pumpkin Pancake and Waffle Mix

I have always been hesitant about pancake and waffle mixes. With such

get myself to buy the mix, but I will make an exception for this mix. This is the easiest breakfast to have during the school week. I usually make a batch of batter on Monday, and throughout the week I scoop the batter each morning and cook the pancakes on a skillet. I have tried cooking all the pancakes at once and reheating them throughout the week, but there is something great about eating them straight off of the griddle.

These are the fluffiest pancakes I have ever tried from a box mix. They are so pillowy and have an amazing pumpkin flavor. I love everything pumpkin flavored, but even if you aren’t a huge fan, I still recommend these pancakes.

They are warm and comforting with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. You can even add chopped walnuts or pecans and chocolate chips in the dough for a pumpkin bread pancake.

One of my new favorite ways to eat these pancakes is with plain or vanilla yogurt on top, a sprinkle of the Trader Joe’s pumpkin pie spice, and a drizzle of maple syrup. It is such a filling breakfast that keeps me full until lunch, and gets me in the mood for fall.

Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli

We all know and love sweet pumpkin desserts, but savory pumpkin dishes need more recognition. I have been eating this ravioli for years, and it is the easiest dish to make for a quick dinner.

All you have to do is boil some water, add the frozen ravioli and cook it for a few minutes. While the pasta is cooking, I make a tomato sauce to go on top. Marinara sauce from a jar will always do the trick as well. I start with some olive oil and saute minced garlic. To that I add fresh diced tomatoes or canned diced tomatoes. I season with a bit of salt, pepper, and red chili flakes, and it is good to go. I love the salty tomato sauce with the sweet and savory pumpkin filling. This is truly an underrated product that makes for a delicious and simple meal.

Pumpkin Ginger Hold The Cone

I have always been a big fan of the chocolate and vanilla Hold The Cones.

This year, I discovered that they sell a seasonal pumpkin ginger flavor. If I am being honest, it sounded disgusting at first. I imagined a strong spicy ginger taste and sweet pumpkin ice cream, which did not sound appetizing. I came across a review for these treats on Instagram and it was rated a 10/10. I com-

Flavors Explode During Quarantine

. . . Continued from Page 4 mented and asked if they were spicy, and I was informed that they had a mild ginger flavor.

Since I love everything pumpkin flavored, I thought I would give this dessert a chance.

My expectations were pretty low, but I was pleasantly surprised. Don’t let the description fool you because they are divine. The best way I can describe these is if a pumpkin pie and a gingerbread cookie had a baby. The cloves and ginger flavors pair so well with the pumpkin spice flavor for a perfect fall blend.

Take my word that these taste way better than they sound and stock up before they are out of season.

Cacio E Pepe

As a vegetarian, pasta and I are best friends. Marinara, alfredo, cacio e pepe, you name it and I eat it every week. I was intrigued by frozen cacioe pepe.

I mean how good can frozen pasta really taste? Let’s be honest here. The pasta

sauce and pasta are separated and all you need is a splash of water. The sauce is so creamy and the pepper flavor is strong and so flavorful.

This pasta dish is so easy to make when I am in a rush and is the perfect comfort food in this cold weather.

Organic Pumpkin Bread

When the pumpkin items came out, I rushed to Trader Joe’s and picked out a loaf of this bread. I love all their other pumpkin bread mixes and bagels, so I figured this had to be good. I wish I were joking when I say I ate this whole loaf in less than a week. It is speckled with cinnamon and pumpkin seeds and has the perfect amount of sweetness. I ate this bread alone or with butter and cinnamon sugar for breakfast or a snack. I had never heard of this bread before, so I like to say I found a hidden treasure of Trader Joe’s.

Hopefully it stays a hidden treasure so it doesn’t sell out too quickly.

Roasted Cauliflower and Cheese Ravioli

I’ll admit that when the pandemic hit, I stocked up as though I were hibernating for six months. Although my pantry was overflowing, I discovered this ravioli as I grabbed all the vegetarian raviolis off of the shelves. If you asked me for my top ten items from Trader Joe’s, this would definitely be on that list. I cannot describe how deep my love is for this pasta. You may think I am crazy. To that I would say that you are correct.

However, I would ask you to try this dish and rethink what you just said. I never would have thought roasted cauliflower and cheese would be a good combo, but I don’t think any other ravioli can compare. I love eating this pasta with a butter sauce or a tomato basil sauce.

The sweetness of the roasted cauliflower is the perfect match for the salty cheese and acidic tomato sauce. If this pasta ever is sold out, it is probable that I bought all of them.

Since I am a vegetarian, I do occasionally crave meat. I try not to eat fake meat, but I will make an exception for this soy chorizo. I heard from a friend who is not vegetarian that it was amazing.

I knew I had to try this chorizo, even though I am not a huge fan of actual chorizo. I made chorizo tacos with onions, sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes and it was incredible. I could not tell that it was fake meat. From the texture to the taste, Trader Joe’s nailed this chorizo. I love to add it in eggs, on salads, in tacos, etc. This chorizo is so versatile and is great for anytime I crave meat.

Sparkling Honeycrisp Apple Juice Beverage

Along with turkey and mashed potatoes on the table during Thanksgiving, there is always a bottle of sparkling apple cider.

No holiday in our house is complete without sparkling apple cider. I read about this drink on Trader Joe’s website and bought it a few days later.

Although it does taste very similar to Martinelli’s sparkling apple cider, I

enjoyed this one more. The apple flavor tasted real and was not too sweet. I also enjoyed that it was not too carbonated.

The small individual cans are a great choice for entertaining during a pandemic, and the packaging is cute per usual. I would recommend stocking up on these drinks before Thanksgiving for the perfect drink for kids.

Cocoa Peppermint Flavored Almond Creamer

I am a vanilla creamer girl year round except when fall arrives. I love pumpkin spice creamers and I was fascinated by this cocoa peppermint creamer. I was also excited that this creamer was made of almond milk, as I prefer to drink nondairy milks.

The cocoa and coffee flavors pair smoothly together and the peppermint is subtle, but adds a nice refreshing taste. I love this silky creamer in hot or cold coffee and it makes me so excited for Christmas!

Trader Joe’s is the best place to get groceries during the holidays. They carry countless presents and have everything you need for a spectacular Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. I hope that my recommendations make you hop in your car and drive to your nearest Trader Joe’s to try these products. I wish you a safe and happy holiday!

Peninsula High Will Begin 2021 With New Turf Community Asset

• Construction underway on long-term community project.

By Beau Demerjian Peninsula High will soon have new turf for its football field. By Janurary, all sports will be playing on a new field and will not have to worry about cancellations due to inclement weather.

Because of the unexpected closure of schools due to Covid - it is an ideal time to get the field completed.

Not only does the new field benefit Peninsula High School, it will benefit the community and help young athletes.

“Once the field fundraising is complete, we will focus on expanding our fundraising for new bleachers, press box, etc.,” said Laura Hughes. “This is a big undertaking, particularly during a pandemic, but we remain optimistic and are excited about improving the sports field facilities for all students at Peninsula High and the community at large. Many youth sports organizations also utilize the field including PV Youth Football and Cheer, AYSO, club LAX teams and more.”

Palos Verdes Youth Football and Cheer along with AYSO will be able to use the field right after the Peninsula football season since it will not have to be closed due to maintenance.

Students Hit The Road To Take A Test SAT/ACT Stress • Local business expands operation to make more popular mask

By Keila Bara Throughout elementary, middle and high school, students are constantly reminded of what most of them are working toward: college.

It is stressed from a young age that it is difficult to get accepted into college, and it is important to get good grades and do enough activities to fill one’s application.

Traditionally, as students enter high school, the stress of maintaining decent grades becomes more prominent, and the standardized tests colleges require become a priority as well. The primary tests are the American College Testing (ACT) and the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), and one or both are taken by high school juniors and seniors.

The resulting scores are one of the deciding factors in whether a college accepts or rejects them. This is how the college application process has been in traditional years. But this is anything but a traditional year.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly affected students and their ability to take these standardized tests that were so valued in the past. As test centers are being closed and scheduled SATs and ACTs are being canceled, many colleges across the nation have been changing their policy from requiring these scores to making them optional.

More than 400 American colleges have confirmed that they are going test-optional, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

This test-optional policy is not an outright statement for students to stop attempting to take the SAT and ACT, however. Because of the years of students hearing about the importance of the SAT and ACT, as well as the hope that submitting a score might still create an advantage and help boost their application, many students are attempting to find available tests to take.

California is one of the stricter states

in terms of COVID-19-related restrictions, so many students are going to out-of-state test centers, turning a fourhour test into a multiple day trip.

These tests have always been an unfair way to determine academic capabilities. A successful score is greatly determined by the amount of money spent on preparatory courses, tutors and study materials.

The scores students receive are often dictated by privilege and accessibility to the adequate preparation needed for success. Factoring in the new issue that many students are now having to travel out-of-state to find an available test center, it is even more apparent that these tests are designed to benefit

accepted by a majority of colleges. By doing so, they are facing the frustration of their tests being rescheduled and canceled. They then have to resort to going far distances to find an open test center.

Traveling to other states is not ideal, but it seems to be the only option for those who are applying to colleges that are still accepting or even requiring these scores.

Sakamoto, for example, traveled to Arizona at the beginning of November to take the SAT. “I have been applying every month since March, and they have all been canceled,” Sakamoto said. “Though the trip to Arizona made the simple task of

Many who do have the resources to travel, though, are choosing to take the opportunity and find an available test. Peninsula High School junior Airi Sakamoto is facing the stress of applications a year early, for she is graduating with the Class of 2021, so she is well aware of the struggles taking the test during a pandemic. She also recognizes the advantage some have over others when taking these tests, and feels the system is unjust.

“I think the SAT and ACT scores are based on preparation rather than actual intelligence, and preparation is mostly based on privilege, which is really unfair,” Sakamoto said. “I am lucky to be able to travel to take the SAT and prepare for the test beforehand, and I recognize that not everybody has that luxury.”

Students, like Sakamoto, who live in affluent areas such as Palos Verdes, are opting to take the SAT or ACT because they can and the scores are still

taking a test into an entire weekend ordeal, it was worth it because I am seeing COVID-19 cases go up again and all of my preparation would have been a complete waste if I could not take it before my applications were due. I need [to submit an] SAT score to apply to certain colleges, and I am grateful to have been able to find an [available] test to meet the application deadline.”

Sakamoto was one of the lucky ones who found success in a nearby state, and she was able to take a road trip and save the hassle of flying.

Other students were not so lucky.

Paulina Garmute, a Peninsula senior, took the trip all the way to Colorado in July to take the ACT, only to find out that her test was canceled with lastminute notice. She tried to find available tests in various places throughout California before turning to Colorado as a last-ditch effort, but all attempts were ultimately unsuccessful.

“I never had an opportunity to take the test because every single test center was booked, including [test centers in] Palm Desert, San Diego, Lake Tahoe and San Francisco,” Garmute said.

“The test I signed up for in Colo-

rado got canceled four days before the [scheduled date], but the trip was already booked and it was too late to back out. [The College Board] could have done a much better job at alerting students if their tests were canceled with more than a few days’ notice, she said.

Sakamoto and Garmute were not alone in this, being just two of many students who took to other locations to take the SAT or ACT. The test-optional policies of a majority of colleges make little difference to those who have the advantage of taking the test.

Many students in communities like Palos Verdes feel that if they have the opportunity to add to their application, they should take it. Because these scores are still considered, it is hard for students to believe that not submitting a score would have zero negative effect on admission status.

If a college was to implement a testblind policy, it would lessen the stress of finding an available test and would create less of a need to travel vast distances. A test-blind policy entails that a college does not even consider an applying student’s SAT or ACT score. However, a test-blind policy it is more rare than the test-optional policy, which simply states there would be no penalty for not submitting a score.

However, many colleges are contradicting the common belief by students that the SAT and ACT are of the upmost importance when being considered for a college. Colleges are making statements addressing students’ concerns that there is a loophole in the term “optional”, stressing that they judge each and every application individually without considering whether a student submitted a score or not.

College admissions teams recognize the uniqueness to this year, and they have been quick to address that the SAT and ACT are not deciding factors in one’s acceptance or rejection.

“I do not think these tests have a lot of value,” Bloch said. “I understand that people can take prep courses for them and those who can afford to do so have a distinct benefit over those who cannot afford to. That being said, many schools are no longer requiring [these scores] at this time, which is an acknowledgement to those students who have difficulty taking it, especially [during COVID-19].”

Whether a college puts emphasis on the SAT and ACT scores submitted or not does not change the fact that so many students are wired to think these scores are make-or-break when trying to get into a college.

The emphasis on test scores in the school system has been ingrained in the minds of students all their lives, and they feel comfort in having these test scores to make them seem more desirable on their college applications. This, combined with the difficulty of finding available tests due to COVID-19, creates a scramble to find open test centers and a need to travel in order to find one.

The reality of these tests is they have always been designed for the privileged, and they have always given some an unfair advantage over others.

This year, the traveling aspect adds to the advantage affluence gives. Trav-

eling is not free, and despite efforts made by colleges to minimize the emphasis on these tests, students feel like optional means required.

There is no way to truly know how much impact a score has on an application for a test-optional college, and that is just how the college application process is. It is unpredictable and stressful, and especially amid a pandemic, students just have to work with what they are given and hope they will end up where they need to be.

“The reality is you cannot control the process, and there is so much [about the college admissions process] that is out of your control,” Bloch said.

“Where you go to college does not determine who you are, going to be or if you are going to be successful as a person or not.”

Being unable to take the SAT or ACT, regardless of the reason, is not the end of the world. Colleges do understand circumstances are different now, and there are plenty of other parts of an application that are of importance over standardized test scores.

The SAT and ACT are both part of a flawed system, and until there is change made to create a more fair and equal system, all students can do is work hard in other aspects and accept that where they are accepted is out of their control, and it will all fall into place in the end.
