Ticktockers, ages 12-18, serve the community through hands-on work with organizations such as Peace4Kids, Friendship Foundation, Toberman Neighborhood Center, Boys and Girls Club of L.A. Harbor, Palos Verdes Education Fund, Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, Heal the Bay, Valmonte Early Learning Academy and more.

In the 2016-17 year, chapter members provided more than 13,000 volunteer hours.

“It was an honor for me to recognize 59 remarkable young women for making such a big difference in our community. Despite full schedules of academics, sports, and school activities, these Ticktockers make caring for others a priority,” said Christine Myrick, Palos Verdes Chapter President.

the CIF prelims. The teams are back this weekend for the finals.

The exciting races held on November 10, brought even more action to the Sea Kings as they reached the finish line.

The Sea Kings girls varsity team brought home the first place win at the three-mile course. Sea Kings’ Samantha Cohen took first place for PV and placed 15th overall with an outstand-

Second place for the Kings was Natalie Watson with a time of 19:01.9, almost breaking 19 minutes. Not far behind, finishing 25th, 26th and 27th overall, were Madeline Babros (19:10.5), Grace Catena (19:10.7), and Samantha Steman (19:11.1), all with close finishes.

Freshman runner Claire Hardesty clocked in at 19:32.3 and placed 36th overall, trailing right behind the pack of three. Ellie Madeja finished 54th overall at 19:58.1.

The PV varsity boys team finished 4th and will compete, as will the girls team, at the Finals this weekend.

Sea King senior Fabian Veerkamp said, “I think we were happy with how we finished CIF prelims. The boys varsity team has improved a lot from the beginning of the season. Not only are we running faster and stronger, but we’re working better with each other.

“The most important goal for us,” Veerkamp said, “was to qualify for finals, which we did. We expect to work hard and win CIF, but we have to work as a team to do it. Without each other we can’t move on. It’s no doubt that there’s going to be competition, but as long as we can push each other and

work as a team we can win easily.

“Racing at CIF, for me,” said Veerkamp, “is a moment to be very proud of. Although I’m nervous at the starting line before the race, I’m happy to race with my team. During the race there isn’t much going through my head, other than to keep working. Every person and every point counts.”

PV High senior Ian Irish placed first for the PV team and 10th overall. Irish finished with an extraordinary clocking of 15:50.2.

Falling not too far behind Irish was junior Tate Nygren who finished in 15:56.9 and 15th place.

Barely breaking a tie with a Rosemead racer, Frankie Reid placed 23rd, clocking 16:07.1.

Veerkamp finished 30th and had a solid time of 16:16.7. William Teets stepped in 54th and had a finishing time of 16:35.2. Placing 74th, Erik Anderson ran the course in 16:53.3. Anderson led Hunter Burczyk to finish 81st with a clocking of 16:56.1.

With the help of their coaches, Brian Shapiro, Kevin Farrington, Kirsty Legg and Alex Broughton, these PV runners have come a long way and are hoping to do even better this weekend.

PEN Tennis Builds On CIF Success Girls Tennis • The Peninsula High tennis program continues to build its reputation as one of the best.

By Nina Li Peninsula High is known for its wide variety of sports teams, ranging from football to equestrian. While all of the teams work hard during their respective seasons to compete in Bay League and California Interscholastic Fed-

eration (CIF), the girls’ tennis team has proven to be a constant winner.

The team was undefeated and had a winning streak of three years in CIF. However, last year the girls lost in the quarter finals of CIF, which put a damper on their mood. This year, coach Mike Hoeger is determined to bring the Panthers back on top.

“This year, from the get-go, the girls were ready to play,” Hoeger said. “We started the year off by winning the Golden State Classic, at Stanford University in Palo Alto, one of the toughest

tournaments in state.”

Hoeger has been coaching tennis for 17 years and his wife, Barbara Dewitt, is the junior varsity tennis coach.

When he was young, Hoeger won the South Dakota State High School Championship and played on a Big Ten Championship team at the University of Minnesota.

After a few years, he stopped playing but regained interest when his own children began to play tennis. Last year, Louis Hoeger was his fourth son to graduate from Peninsula, and he also

was coached by his father.

“Some years you have more talent than others, so, while it is great to win championships, I really want the girls to improve, compete, bond and have fun,” Hoeger said. “Being on a high school sports team should give you the best memories of your life.”

During season, the girls prepare for Bay League and CIF by practicing for an hour and a half every Monday through Thursday.

Silver Spur Elementary School has been awarded the 2017 National Blue Ribbon School Award, one of the most difficult school titles to receive.

The Rancho Palos Verdes School was one of only 25 schools in California and one of the 342 schools in the U.S. that got the award.

The award is an honor given to the most outstanding public or private schools, elementary, middle and high school.

Silver Spur won it for being an exemplary, high-performing school in test scores, rankings and overall academic excellence. Schools have to be nominated by a state official a year in advance and then they can start the application process.

It took Silver Spur two months to thoroughly fill out the application due to the many essays on multiple topics, such as “core curriculum areas, other curriculum areas, professional development, school leadership, engaging families and communities and interventions,’’ said Silver Spur teacher Jasmine Arjasbi.

As part of the celebration of winning, Principal Marta Jevenois-Richardson and a Silver Spur teacher Jasmine Arjasbi went to Washington, D.C. to receive the award and brought home a plaque and banner given by the Secretary of Education, Betsey DeVoss.

At an assembly, the students were awarded a lanyard and a pin that have the National Blue Ribbon symbol on it.

Elise Austin Leaves Mark On PV Program Profile • Senior Sea King captain leaves program on the upswing and is set for the challenges of D1 competition.

By Jenna McFarland Palos Verdes High girls’ volleyball team just finished their season, and they had quite a run in CIF this year.

Making it to the third round, the team made it further this season than ever before.

Although Sea Kings are excited about next season, for senior captain Elise Austin, her time wearing Red and Black has come to a close.

When asked about her relationship with the sport throughout the years, Austin gave us a look back into the years that have led her to where she is now, committed to University of San Diego to play Division 1 volleyball next year.

“I learned how to play volleyball when I was six years old at USYVL, an organization like AYSO,” she said. “It was a few years later, in sixth grade, that I began to play club for Sunshine and have continued along the club track ever since.”

In her early years, she played many sports including soccer, swim and basketball, but, she said, “With volleyball, there was an instant connection and it felt right,” which is how she chose to stick with volleyball above all the rest.

She continues to describe her love for the sport and says “it’s honestly euphoric when I play, there’s nothing like the feeling of strength and happiness that I get when I have a kill.”

Also, she said, “It helps me cope with stress and gives me something to focus on and put a lot of love into.”

Austin couldn’t imagine her life without volleyball, and, luckily, she doesn’t have to, at least not for the next four years as she continues the sport in college.

Austin couldn’t be happier to be playing for University of San Diego next year, making the long process to get there worth it.

She was approached by her first college prospect, USC, the summer before her freshman year of high school. Since then she has contacted many schools and gone on visits all over the country, trying to find the right fit for her. In fact, USD was not on Austin’s radar until much later after she went to a camp there the summer before her junior year and absolutely fell in love.

According to Austin, “There are so many reasons why I love the school.

The coaches at USD are amazing, and they balance each other so well, it’s also a pretty low key program which I like, but still Division 1 and very good --

thirteenth in the nation, in fact. It’s also beautiful and has a nurturing program that is going to push me and make me a better person.”

Although much of her volleyball career has been spent playing for Sunshine Club, playing for Palos Verdes has been a highlight of her high school years. Austin even calls the high school volleyball season her “favorite part of the year.”

After four years on varsity and her role as captain this year, Austin said “I have made my closest friends through the school volleyball program and have my best memories from the last four years.”

“This year, the PV team has made it further in CIF than ever before and, as the underdogs, “It is such a rush when we win and to see how far we’ve come this season and last season”, said Austin.

As much as Austin loves her high school team, she has an equal place in her heart for her club team. She loves “the intensity and all the opportunities that club has brought that high school never could.”

Although she loves both club and high school, she says there are huge expectations on her on her club team that she doesn’t necessarily face in high

school.

Her club team was ranked fifth in the nation last season, and so there is no surprise that the players “are always pushing each other and bettering each other at every practice, she said.

So far, Austin has achieved great things with her love of volleyball, and has four more years of the sport ahead of her, at least. Since there is no professional volleyball in the United States, she plans to make the most of her college career. She would “love to win a national title while at USD and definitely win the West Coast Conference.”

No matter what her future holds, Austin knows that “I want to play volleyball for fun for as long as I can and I would love for my future kids to play it as well. I love the sport and am so thankful for being able to pursue it as long as possible,” she said.

side of the school, in their own clubs, so they can get in extra practice. Additionally, the girls play many practice matches to focus on their weaknesses and improve wherever they can.

“Our practice is definitely a lot more lax compared to the other teams’ practices,” senior Ashley Hong said.

“I know volleyball, for example, does a ton of conditioning and cross country runs at least 10 miles. However, for the girls’ tennis team, school practice is more about getting comfortable playing with different partners and working out strategies. Most of the girls go to separate lessons or workouts outside of school to improve their skills.”

This year, there are many talented

girls including Ryan Peus, Kimmi Hance, Amanda Sharng and Serena Ko. Since there are different categories in tennis, coach Hoeger evaluates the girls’ ability to play singles and doubles in order to pair them together for the best results.

“This year we have a lot of really strong, highly ranked girls, so the team is doing super well,” Hong said.

“Also, I feel like the team as a whole is much more united this year, and we have upped our game regarding cheering and school spirit.”

A topic that is often brought up regarding high school sports is the discrepancy between the levels of achievement varying from sport to sport. In some sports, such as tennis,

the teams do really well in competition, but in others, it could be very hard to win a tournament.

“I think there are a lot of differences between each sport regarding their performance in Bay League and CIF, mainly through the way people interpret it,” said junior Serena Ko. “For tennis, we have made it to CIF finals, semis, etc. in Division 1, but no one really seems to pay attention because it must seem so normal for us to make it that far,” Ko said.

“However, for other sports, it is a major deal for them to make it through to the semis and finals in CIF division 3 or 4 because it does not happen that often. Overall, each sport’s performance, in either Bay League or CIF, is the same. It really just depends on

who interprets it.”

Peninsula’s sports teams are all very competitive and work hard to get that edge. From swimming to basketball, these athletes work every day to become better as a team and be able to advance further in their competitions.

“As an athlete, it is really hard to play under pressure, which there is definitely more of during CIF,” Hong said. “It is important to keep your mind clear, and during CIF it is easy to focus solely on winning and not on each individual point. However, our team does well during both.”
