PEN Dance Hosts Annual Camp COED Movement • Local students attend dance camp to prepare for high school compeition and events.

Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s COED Choreo team hosted its annual fundraiser, Camp COED, on Nov. 3, for third to 12th grade students in the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District.

“Camp COED is an event that

PEN Journalists Take On Chicago

Field Trip

• Peninsula High journalism students discover Chicago is their kind of town.

By Nina Li Peninsula High students, along with their advisor, Jaymee Johnson, learned something about weather when they traveled to Chicago in early November to participate in the annual JEA/NSPA Convention.

Known as the Windy City, Chicago did not disappoint with its strong gusts of wind and chilling weather with temperatures at the 30 degrees level.

The students stayed at the Hyatt Regency hotel, located in the heart of the city. During their time between taking classes, they were able to explore the city and all it has to offer.

“The trip was amazing, I had the opportunity to visit a place extremely different from where I am from,” said Stella Caceres. “It was a breathtaking and buzzing city that made me want to explore. Everything was so vibrant, and I learned so much. I am thankful that I was able to go to Chicago for the first time with the newspaper staff and I definitely want to visit again!”

The students had staff dinners together at some famous Chicago spots, the most notable was deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s. They also went bowling together at Pinstripes and walked up and down Magnificent Mile.

As most of the students were raised in California, the weather was probably the starkest difference between Los Angeles and Chicago.

“As a visitor, the weather was definitely the first thing that differed because I am used to the sunny Los Angeles weather,” said Rianne Aguas. “I was not prepared for the cold, windy weather. However, I really enjoyed the weather as I got used to it, and I think that it was definitely one of my favorite parts of Chicago.”

The gift boxes were filled with things like coloring books and stuffed animals, as well as essential items such as hairbrushes and toothbrushes. The filled boxes were then taken to Rolling Hills Covenant Church where they will be sent to children overseas. PEN High Students Take Charge To Run Local Dance Camp . . . The student-run Camp COED had another successful weekend of dance and fun.

Prior to the event, the varsity team members met to assign job positions for everyone who would run and assist the event, as well as create T-shirt and poster designs.

“I think that Camp COED ran smoothly this year. Considering that it was student-run. It was very organized,” said coach Shigeto Nakano. “We had the issue with the fire, but [the team was] able to fix things on the spot and it worked out.”

The event started off with the MC’s introduction and warm-up, in which a Choreo team member lead the participants through a simple series of exercises to get their blood flowing.

Then participants were split between beginners and intermediate/

advanced dance, with the students choosing which class to take based on their own dance skill level.

After the first session, team members held a mini-showcase for each group, gave the participants a break and played some icebreakers. After the fundraiser rolled into its second session with the same division between skill level. The routine learned from this class was then performed for the parents to watch and video.

This year, Camp COED was almost entirely student-run due to schedule conflicts and the last-minute change of advisors and coaches that took place prior to the season.

National Convention Provides Insights Journalism • Future journalist attend national convention to learn from peers and professionals.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s newspaper staff on The Pen recently traveled to Chicago to participate in the annual National High School Journalism Convention.

On the trip, Nov. 2 to Nov. 5, staff members used their time in the Windy City to take classes and explore the city. The staff made the trip with the intention of networking with other student journalists from across the nation and learn from professional journalists with many years of experience.

“The JEA/NSPA conventions are

opportunities for students to meet and learn from professional journalists in the newspaper, magazine and Internet media industries,” said The Pen’s advisor Jaymee Johnson. “It is also an opportunity for them to showcase their work and compete on behalf of their publication.”

This year’s convention had a wide array of classes students could choose from. From news gathering sessions to design classes, there were endless opportunities for these journalists to learn how to make the most of their position, from advisors to writers.

“Since I am an Opinion editor for the paper, I went to several classes that were on censorship, covering controversial topics and writing with a strong bias,” said senior Liana Korotzer.

These hour-long sessions involved

lectures, interactive discussions and visual displays that exemplified what the speakers wanted to convey. Each class was catered toward a specific audience, from those seeking how to gather news to those who wanted to hear the experiences of professionals in the field. Amidst these countless sessions, there were some notable presentations that still resonate in some hearts.

“One session that I really loved was the Parkland presentation. It was so meaningful to see how the Stoneman Douglas High School (Fla.) yearbook staff was able to create something so beautiful out of a tragedy,” said Korotzer.

One session that had a particularly large showing was one done by Stoneman High yearbook advisor Sarah

Lerner. The presentation was based on the mass school shooting that occurred in Parkland, Florida, where 17 lives were lost in the process.

During her approximately 45-minute speech, Lerner talked about her own experience of being in the midst of the shooting and how her yearbook staff publicized and handled the incident afterward.

Lerner showed the audience the yearbook spreads she and her staff dedicated so much time and effort into creating and how they encompassed the shooting.

“This year’s convention was interesting because I was able to attend classes that I was not able to go to before,” said senior and editor-inchief Emily McGinn. “For example,

Elementary school students took over the Hill this month, running the 1.2 mile cross country course at Palos Verdes Intermediate School.

The run was organized by the PVIS cross country team with Linda and Scott Reid.

More than 100 students participated from elementary schools Silver Spur, Cornerstone, Mira Catalina, Lunada Bay, Vista Grande, and Point Vicente. Last year there were only 25 student participants.

Linda Reid said organizers were really hoping to make the event a community affair.

Students and parents from both high schools and PVIS helped to make sure things ran smoothly. It was a quick race, and all the runners had fun representing their school.

The goal of the event was to make cross country fun and introduce an option for students when they enter middle school.

Those who went were able to gather information that they would not have gotten anywhere else. Despite the odds of making up work from missing school and the weather of the Windy City, The Pen staff came back

as journalists with more knowledge of what they are passionate about.

“I think that the journalism convention reminds the people who go that [they are a part of ] one small newspaper in a country full of journalists,” Korotzer said. “It shows people that the way they do things does not have to be the way everyone else does it, and they can open their eyes to something new.”

During the five days that the students were together they not only learned about journalism and writing, but also bonded and formed connections that would not have been forged without the trip.

“Before, I only went to Chicago with family members,” said Josh Kim, “Going to one of my favorite cities with some people I never talked to was a little unnerving at first. However, the more time I spent with them, the more I interacted and related with them.”

New Season Begins With AYSO Playoffs

• Playoffs are underway in all divisions as the quest for a King and Queen of the Hill championship gets serious.

Only the boys’ 9U Red Lions have a perfect record at 6-0-0, while the boys’ 12U Liverpool and the Pink Parrots and Blue Jays from the girls’ 12U Division all finished the regular season with eight victories.

The boys’ 12U Hamburger scored a total of 51 goals in the regular season, while boys’ 14U Croatia allowed only eight.

Some division are holding final regular season matches today, while other divisions are already competing in their playoff tournaments with the finals set for Dec. 8.

Blue Sombrero registration fee must be completed by December 5th. After December 5th space will be given on a first come first serve basis.

Your child may be waitlisted.

Fee:

$90 per child for returning fall players. $107.50 for new players until December 5. $100 per child for returning fall players, $117.50 for new players from December 6.

Team Selection:

6U, 8U, & 10U will have a separate boys and girls division. 12U will be coed. Balanced teams & blind draft by coordinators – please, no special requests as to placement with friends or neighbors for 10U and 12U.

Dancers Demand Credit For The Effort Dancers Compete • Dance is considered at varsity sport at school, but not on college applications.

By Lily Shah The debate over whether dance is, or is not, a sport continues.

Dancers, including myself, enforce the idea of dance falling under the sports category. I am a four-year member of Varsity Dance at Peninsula High School. We are regarded as a varsity sport because we meet all the requirements to receive a varsity letter: competing, performing some act of school service, and receiving PE credit.

As a senior, college applications are

a major portion of my life, and I have prepared myself for the numerous activities I am involved in.

I expected no problems to arise in my college applications in entering Varsity Dance as a varsity sport, as I have received a varsity letter four years in a row.

I clicked Varsity/JV sport and was asked to enter the sport I played. I scrolled through the “A” sports, then “B” sports and on, coming across many sports I did not know existed, such as rodeo, rifle and squash.

Reaching the bottom of the list, I was shocked that there was no dance option under the varsity sports list. Yes, there is the option to enter the team as just dance, but there is a certain prestige that comes from having a “Varsity” title,

and one I would like my colleges to be aware of.

I was very disheartened when I couldn’t enter in my coveted team as a varsity sport, and it made me mad that somehow after countless hours of dedication to my team, I would be unable to call it a varsity sport. It is extremely frustrating to constantly fight this battle over whether dance is a sport. Dance is an art; however, it is also a sport.

The hours we put into practicing dances is the same as football players practicing their plays.

The choreography we must memorize and retain is like the work that players need to prepare for their games, yet the most challenging part is that danc-

ers must make all the work they do appear effortless.

Is it possible that is why so many people shy away from titling dance as a sport? We fool people into thinking it is easy. If we did not, it would not be pleasing to the eye. Look at any dancers’ feet, legs or knees and you will see through the cuts, bruises, and floor burns of the treacherous activity we put our bodies through.

I hope that one day this debate will resolve itself, and the hard-working dancers across the nation will be able to display themselves as not only artists, but also athletes and have the choice of clicking “dance” under the Varsity sports category.

“The only thing that went wrong was the fires in Southern California, which affected the weather in our area,” Tseng said. “[The participants] were supposed to showcase outside at the end of camp for their parents to watch, but [everyone], unfortunately, had to

squish into one dance room.”

The day of the fundraiser, the air was thick with smoke and the participants could not stand outside without coughing, let alone dance. Therefore, the team asked for the showcase to take place in the dance room to ensure the safety of the dancers.

Despite the problems COED Choreo faced throughout the process of planning the fundraiser and running it, the Camp was a huge success this year with

a turnout of around 50 participants.

Team members hope that those who went had as much fun as they did and that they may be interested in COED Choreo in the future.

“Camp COED impacts the community in a positive way,” Tseng said. “It is a way for students to share their love for dancing with friends and family, and the event reflects on what COED Choreo does to represent its community.”

Raiders Hold Annual Pumpkin Chunk Science!

• Ridgecrest Intermediate School held its annual Pumpkin Chunk the day before Halloween.

The winning team chucked its pumpkin 400 feet in semifinals and then had a winning 370 feet chuck in finals on Nov. 2.
