• The Peninsula High football team took to the field one last time this season and got a big win over Inglewood on Homecoming Day. The game will go down on the official record book as a 2-0 forfeit loss for the Panthers, but anyone who was at the contest witnessed the Panthers earning the victory on the field of play.

The Panthers jumped out to a big lead to take control of the game and for a 46-12 Bay League victory.

Sea Kings Rule The Bay - Again

Varsity Football • The Sea Kings won its 27 consecutive Bay League game and its 5th Bay League title.

By Dean Porter The Palos Verdes High School football team took on the Redondo Sea Hawks on Oct. 30 at home.

The Sea Kings put a 26-game Bay League winning streak on the line against Redondo Union High School last week and came away with a 27game win streak.

Redondo put up a fight, but the Sea Kings’ streak held on with then15-7 Victory.

With the win, the Sea Kings captured their fifth straight Bay League title.

PV Coach Reflects On The PEN Decision Coach’s View • The decision to cut Peninsula High’s football season short has opened the door for many opinions and suggestions.

By Matthew Gilbertson Marissa Hewitt, the girls’ lacrosse coach at Palos Verdes High, shared her views on the subject and spoke to the school board about the decision to forfeit games.

“I wanted to remind the board that a decision like this has ripple effects not just for Peninsula High School but for PVHS as well,” said Hewitt.

The decision to cancel the program, without any input from the actual players and their families, sets a dangerous precedent that an administration could decide to end any program, at any time, without legitimate cause or due diligence.”

Coach Hewitt acknowledges that there are circumstances where it is appropriate to cancel or cut a season short.

She explained that she even considered cancelling the previous JV lacrosse season for the Sea Kings because the team was sometimes playing with only seven players in a sport with 12 players in a starting lineup.

However, after receiving input from her players, she allowed the season to

continue.

Reflecting on the termination of Peninsula’s football season, she said “The way it was handled and not the ultimate outcome is what has everyone so frustrated.”

Hewitt believes that sports programs need to emphasize recruiting to ensure that they have enough athletes to keep the programs alive. She said that coaches should help each other recruit, and that players should also be active in encouraging participation.

She also recognizes that communication between programs and administration is necessary in this process.

“If there had been better communication between the team and the administration, for example by setting a minimum number of players, the administration could have empowered the boys and their coaches to find new players before it was too late and maybe even prevented the situation from happening in the first place,” said Hewitt.

She also notes that the season was cut short not only for the football players but also for Cheer, Song and Band.

Hewitt asks, “If something as important to a school as football could be cut, then what program is safe?”

Peninsula Plans For A Football Future

It was the shockwave felt around the Hill: On Oct. 20, Peninsula High School administrators put an end to the school’s football season with only three games left – which included Homecoming and the ever-popular rivalry game against Palos Verdes High! Administrators canceled the season following injury to six players and a 54-13 loss to Mira Costa.

After discussions with coaching staff and trainers, Principal Mitzi Cress made the decision out of concern for the safety of the team’s remaining players, who were thought to be smaller and less experienced than the players they would face in the last three games.

In a press release issued to media outlets, Cress stated they believed the school could not field a varsity team without putting the players in jeopardy.

“As a principal, this was one of the toughest decisions that I was ever faced with; I knew full well what the fallout would be,” Cress told Panorama, “but

you always have to put the safety of the kids first.”

Players, students, parents, alumni, and supporters from around the South Bay reacted angrily over her decision; some calling for her removal as principal.

“Fire that principal!” wrote one Rancho Palos Verdes supporter on Change. org, where a petition was mounted to reinstate the season.

Others, such as Christian Nagasugi from Boston, were concerned about the impact the decision would have on a future program. In signing the petition, he said, “If the team wanted to cut its season short for safety reasons, then they could have made that decision on their own; it was theirs to make. However, taking this kind of action shows a disloyalty to the athletes and student body as a whole, which could steer away incoming freshman for years to come due to the stigma surrounding the situation.”

Cress told Panorama there was no doubt after talking to coaches and trainers what she had to do.

“I have to believe I was putting (the players) first,” she added.

On Monday Cress met with site ad-

ministrators, varsity Coach Michael Christensen and Athletic Director Wendell Yoshida to strategize for the 2016 football season. Is there concern that the decision to pull the plug this year could affect recruiting students for next year’s team?

“Absolutely!” Cress said. “And that’s why we’re putting in a huge effort so that people know there is going to be a football team next year.”

But, she said, the bottom line: The program needs more players.

The varsity squad began this season with 27 players. The school had a junior varsity team but did not have enough players for a freshman team.

Administrators will continue to work on a plan to attract more players, but has already enacted an immediate first step.

Starting now, ninth- and 10th-grade students may switch from their physical education classes to a new sixth-period football class, which will focus on football fundamentals and weightlifting.

“We usually don’t do this until second semester,” Cress said.

Administrators are also revamping its spring football league and agespecific camps, and will begin meeting

with parents, alumni, and community members as early as next week. Cress said they are open to all ideas and suggestions, and stressed that there will be football next year.

“You gotta have football,” she said.

“It’s part of high school.”

Homecoming, Yes; Rivalry, No By pulling out of the regular season, Peninsula forfeited its remaining games to Redondo Union, Inglewood, and Palos Verdes High. However, the Panthers, combining varsity and JV players, took on Redondo and Inglewood anyway.

Being in a similar situation, the Inglewood varsity-JV team trekked up the Hill on Oct. 30 to play in Peninsula’s Homecoming game.

“Inglewood, I can’t say enough about them. … Inglewood came up here to make sure we had our homecoming,” Cress said. “It was great.”

The Panthers defeated the Sentinels in what was considered a “wellmatched” game.

But the most anticipated game of the season was canceled altogether. The

PV Athletes Choose Sea Kings Have Clear View From The Block For Blocks & Sports PV Football PV Athletes

• Palos Verdes High student athletes persuaded by block schedules, winning programs and where friends go to school

By Matthew Gilbertson With two exceptional high schools on the Hill, incoming high school students on the Peninsula cannot go wrong in choosing a school.

The Palos Verdes Unified School District allows incoming freshmen to choose which high school they will attend, rather than assigning students to schools based on boundaries.

While some students simply attend the high school nearest to their homes, others consider various factors before choosing a school.

At Palos Verdes High, several key elements play a large role in attracting future Sea Kings.

“I liked the idea of the block schedule, a good environment, good people, and a good location,” said Dominic Mallano, a junior at PVHS. Sitting just about a block from the ocean, the school’s location is unparalleled in the area. However, features such as the block schedule are more significant to many students.

The block schedule consists of classes that are almost two hours long and alternate between “A” and “B” days.

Students attend half of the classes on their schedules each day.

On the other hand, Peninsula High follows a schedule in which students attend all their classes everyday, with each class lasting just under an hour.

The block schedule allows more time to complete long activities and lessons.

Chris Kelliny, a senior and twosport athlete at PV, said the block schedule “helps balance academics and athletics by giving me two days to

do my work.”

Since classes meet every other day, students have two nights to complete homework assignments. Many students find this beneficial because it allows for flexibility. For example, if an athlete has a game one night, he or she could complete all of his or her assignments the night before the game so that the next night there are no assignments that need to be completed.

“I played three sports my freshmen year so I believe that the block schedule accommodates athletes better than Peninsula’s schedule,” explained senior Ryan Moore. The block schedule is an important contribution to the athletic culture at Palos Verdes High.

Kelliny, a varsity football and lacrosse player, said, “I decided to go to PV because of its great sports programs and due to the school’s dominance over Peninsula when I would go to the games. While at Ridgecrest (Intermediate School) I hadn’t decided which school to go to (until 8th grade) but because of my sports teams and the friendships I built during them, I was persuaded to go to PV.” Along with strong sports teams, Palos Verdes High offers many notable programs for students.

The Palos Verdes Institute of Technology (PVIT) engages Sea Kings in various engineering projects. PVIT offers a great environment and great mentors.

In the different groups, such as ROV (remotely operated vehicle), and electric car, there are knowledgeable adult volunteers helping on their own time just so we can succeed and have fun too,” said PVHS senior Jacob Criss.

The block schedule, athletics and specialty programs are several of many features that create a culture surrounding PVHS that encourages active participation on campus.

By Dean Porter The question everyone has been asking lately is, “Why did you go to Palos Verdes High School?”

After speaking to some Palos Verdes football players, they agreed the three most common reasons were the block schedule, friends and football.

Senior Danny Schultz said, ”I chose Palos Verdes because I knew I would get the same education I would get at Peninsula, but I would be part of a football program that won.”

Senior Dennis Harjo said, “Well I went to Miraleste for middle school and towards the end of 8th grade, all of my friends and I were deciding where to go and all my friends were going to go to PV, so I wanted to go where my

friends went. Then I found out that PV has better football teams then PEN. That made my decision even stronger.

Football has always been a big part of my life and I learned that if you love football and want to play football while having fun then PV is the place to go.“ Junior Anthony Carresi said, “PV seemed a lot more relaxed. Pen seemed all crazy about grades and that sports were not a big concern.”

Rajiv Sheth, who lives a stone’s throw away from Pen, said,” I really liked the idea of the block schedule, and most of my friends that played football were going to go to PV.” The football trend seems to be going to Palos Verdes. This year Palos Verdes had 40 freshmen players, and many of them loved the block schedule, which also seems to be attracting more football players because it allows kids to have more time to finish their homework.

PV League Winning Streak Goes To 27

The Sea Kings only had 81 yards in the air and 60 yards on the ground but capitalized on two costly turnovers by the Sea Hawks.

Senior kicker Kyle Coale was a huge contributor for the Sea Kings in the fourth quarter. Coale drilled two field goals, one from 33 yards and one from 43 yards, putting the Sea Kings ahead 15-7 late in the fourth quarter.

With two minutes left in the game, Redondo started a drive on their on 20-yard line. The Sea Hawks drove the

ball to inside the Sea Kings 40-yard line with a little under one minute to go and no timeouts.

The Sea Kings stopped them on four consecutive plays, two of those being sacks to end the game.

With that win, the Sea Kings’ Bay League streak continues. And since Peninsula High School forfeited their last three games, including one against the Sea Kings, the streak will extend to 28 Bay League games and a League record of 5-0 and a season record of 7-3.

The Sea Kings will play their first playoff opponent (TBD) on Friday the 13th at a sight yet to be determined with a 7 P.M. kickoff.

In the midst of the fallout, some of the blame for the decline in the Panther football program was placed on the 2002 reopening of PV High. Peninsula became an athletic powerhouse in 1990s, following consolidation of the school district’s three high schools: Rolling Hills High, Miraleste High, and Palos Verdes. When PV reopened, it divided the athletic talent.

Peninsula struggled while PV went on to win two CIF championships.

But other factors, such as interest in other sports and parents’ concern over safety of the game, may also be contributing to the decline.

Panthers Athletes Have Tough Choices To Make PEN Athletes

• Peninsula High student athletes talk about choosing sports, choosing schools.

By Tyler Patterson Peninsula High School’s decision to cancel its remaining football games this season, which included the rivalry game against Palos Verdes, because of safety concerns, has left many players, students and parents angry.

People have been quick to blame Peninsula’s principal, Mitzi Cress, and the football coach for the unpopular decision. The real problem, though, lies with students at Peninsula who are not signing up for football.

Once a perennial CIF powerhouse, Peninsula has been having issues with students unwilling to try out and play.

I decided to find out more about why Peninsula athletes who play other sports are not signing up for football.

Emilio Nunziati, lacrosse Q: You played football in your freshman and sophomore years. Why did you stop playing?

A: I really wasn’t having fun playing football back then. I was getting hit too much as a quarterback, and I had a difficult time playing through injuries.

Q: Do you think you made the right decision?

A: I think I did because I wasn’t putting my whole heart into the sport, and it wasn’t helping the team.

Q: What would it have taken to get you back on the field this season?

A: Nothing would have gotten me to play. If I was still having fun playing the sport, I would have played. I enjoy myself much more when I’m playing lacrosse.

David Friebe, soccer Q: Why aren’t you playing football?

A: I really had no time during fall this year. I had to balance school work,

being captain of the soccer team, college applications, music, and work.

Q: Why do you think very few people signed up for football this year?

A: Every year football has been decreasing in numbers, and this year we just hit a new low. It might be because our team hasn’t been good in recent years. And parents are worried because of the physicality.

Q: Would you have joined the team if you knew the season was going to end?

A: I would have signed up for football in my freshman year, but I never had time in the summer and fall. But if I wasn’t doing soccer or music, I definitely would have played.

Samuel Hill, volleyball superstar Q: Do you think the reason students didn’t sign up for football was because of time commitment, injuries, or something else?

A: I think people didn’t sign up because of lack of inspiration. I really

So what does the old Big Daddy Nikon camera guy have to say about all the Peninsula High football stuff.

We’re going to wait until the next edition of PANORAMA on Nov. 21 to put out our two cents on the subject.

As someone who has been popping in and out of school sites for the last eight years, and has heard a variety opinions about our schools, the school board, administrations, parents, students, coaches, mascots and colors - I might be able to come up with something. But not until the next edition.

But I did want to say congratulations to the Palos Verdes High football program.

Winning five straight Bay League championships and 27 straight Bay League victories is an absolutely incredi-

ble achievement that will probably never be duplicated.

Great job Sea Kings and what a way to represent the Hill. We try not to go overboard with the word "awesome" and exclamation points here at Panorama headquarters. But hey, AWESOME! AWESOME achievement Sea Kings!

Peninsula Itching To Play PV One More Time

By Tobi Ibraheem Panthers football players, struck with news that they had to forfeit their last three games of the season, including the rivalry game with Palos Verdes, were offended and uncomprehending as to why the school would take such action.

The decision was made due to the low number of players the team had, and the danger in putting players in the game and facing possible injury by playing the entire game, without a break.

The whole school didn’t agree with the decision. In fact, there was a petition in protest posted all over social media.

Q: Does volleyball ever have trouble getting kids to sign up?

A: In the past, volleyball has had a lot of trouble with the number of players in the program. It is not as attractive as basketball or baseball so it’s easy to see why some guys aren’t interested.

Christian Au, basketball Q: Why do you play basketball and not football?

A: I have played basketball since a kid and never really grew up playing football. Football looks like fun, but it is difficult to play at my size. I feel that the physicality is too much, and there is too much risk compared to basketball.

Q: Why do you think students at Peninsula aren’t signing up for football?

A: I think there is too much risk for people to get injured. Also, well, because we are PEN. I don’t think people really want to join a team that has carried a losing record with it for the past decade.

Most of the students from both schools were angry because a memory that could have been shared with friends at both schools that would last forever was taken away from them.

The Peninsula football players were enraged, which led to some players quitting and seniors sitting out the Redondo game.

Some seniors like Julius Lagmay, Alex Rosemond and Cameron Ghaffari chose to play the Homecoming game against Inglewood.

Since it was the last game that seniors would play for Peninsula, it was emotional and hard to watch.

The Panthers came out and got the victory, thanks to touchdowns by Alex Martinez, Lagmay and Marco Merola.

The Zoo did a great job supporting the players in their last game, which may have been a factor in the victory.

Even though the school allowed the players to play the game, the student body is still worried about the future of Peninsula football.

Since the forfeit decision was announced to the school, students are worried that no one will want to come to Peninsula to play football, leading to no football program.

Also, the school wanted to move the football team out of the Bay League, which could prohibit all Panthers teams from playing Palos Verdes High School.

What the student body really wants is to play PV. As a senior football player, I had the opportunity to attend three PV football games and play in one of them. Attending and playing those games is probably the best feeling ever, because you

are playing your Hill rival and the friends that you’ve grown up with.

Secondly, you get the opportunity to give the school a game that will forever be in their memory.

It’s sad to know that the underclassmen may not get the chance to experience a PV game, but it’s also sad to see where Peninsula sports will be going in the next few years.

I think the PV game is something that should not be taken from the student body and the decision needs to be thought about more thoroughly.

"Restore the Roar" Calls For Community Leadership Parent View

• Peninsula Panther Football is: Memories. Rising above adversity. Creating moments. Leadership.

By Heather Schubert Being part of rebuilding a program is rarely easy. It is a multi-year process filled with victories, challenges and setbacks.

For years, Peninsula football has struggled with numbers. Three years ago there were only 14 freshman entering the program. Since then, the numbers have risen slightly each year, but not at a rapid enough rate to replace the graduating seniors.

In 2014, the program adapted to the numbers by combining its freshman and JV teams into one Frosh/Soph team, and recruiting was stepped up.

During the off season the coaches and players hosted a football youth camp that was attended by 140 future players.

Some Panthers also volunteered at local youth football clinics and leagues.

Invitations to come out for Spring football were broadcast in the daily school bulletin.

Just about everything concerning football at Peninsula is new - the locker room, the film bungalow, the game day

trailer, the snack shack, and even the state-of-the-art equipment in a brand new weight room.

Everyone involved in the program could see that we were in for some lean years. However, along with those challenging times, came opportunities to make a difference and to lead.

Years from now, the Panthers who went through this period will look back and remember the memories made on and off the field - the spectacular one handed catches, the bonfires at Pismo Beach, playing every down of a game, setting school records, scoring on trick plays, coming back from injury, and pushing themselves beyond what was thought possible.

To say that the players are disappointed about forfeiting the final three Varsity games, and instead playing as a combined JV/Varsity team is an understatement. But no one ever said playing football at Peninsula would come without hardships.

Football is all about overcoming adversity, and the team made the best of the situation by posting a 46-32 win on Homecoming.

From this turmoil, the community has responded and the school has rallied to “Restore the Roar.”

Many alumni have offered support

and businesses have reached out with donations. A spring football league and age-specific camps featuring past and present Panther athletes is already in the works.

The district superintendent, himself a high school and college football player, has personally promised growth of the program.

From this season, cut prematurely short, will come a bigger, stronger, and more resilient program.

Panthers football will no longer battle these low numbers alone. We will now have the community, school, alumni, administration and the school district working side by side.

If everyone follows through on their promises, Panthers football will endure, because it is here to stay.

Clock Runs Out On Youth Football Pop Warner • Time runs out on the season for most tackle and flag teams.

The PV Grizzlies tackle football team have an 10-0 record after getting an 8-0 win over the L.A. Valley Seahawks in the L.A. Country Junior Midge Division championship game last week.

They will play again in the Wescon D1 playoffs next week in Riverside.

The PV Broncos reached the Midget Division championship game last weekend but fell, 26-22, to the 101 Warriors out of the Conejo Valley.

The PV Mustangs fell to the Carson Ravens West, 20-8, in the Pee Wee Division championship game.

Roughly, that’s 8th grade, 7th grade and 6th grade players from the Peninsula and local area playing in L.A. County Pop Warner championship games.

In the boys’ U10 Division, Spain has allowed only five goals this season and is 6-0-0. In the East Ireland has allowed only six goals all season and is 6-0-0.

The boys’ U10 Division has only one more weekend of regular season games before beginning playoff action. Other divisions have two or three more matches before they begin playoff tournament.

Ewan Macfarlane (6th-12:21.56), Dane Dawson (7th-12:31.35), Tor Gasteiger (11th-12:45.59), Koa Vetterlein (12th12:47.78) and Spencer Stacy (15th13:10.61) rounded out the top seven for Palos Verdes, which finished with 29 points.

Toby Wakefield-Carl was the top finisher for Ridgecrest, placing fifth at 12:14.43. Dylan Santana was the top Chadwick runner, taking 24th at 13:54.99.

Manhattan Beach was second in the team standings with 50 points.

Ridgecrest was third at 87 followed by Miraleste (110) and Chadwick (147).

Ridgecrest’s Aaron WakefieldCarl outkicked Hermosa Valley’s Cole Strusser 10:23.67 to 10:25.97 to win

the 1.6-mile 6th grade boys race. Dylan Booth was the top PVIS finisher, placing fourth in 11:04.50. Luke Martoccia led Miraleste in sixth place at 11:16.29.

Manhattan Beach upset Mt. SAC champion PVIS 58-60 with Ridgecrest fourth at 71 and Miraleste sixth at 145.

Manhattan Beach’s Sierra Sargent won the 6th grade girls race in 11:12.66. PVIS took the team title with 40 points, putting five runners in the top 15: Peterson (4th-11:45.00), Anna Terrell (5th-11:54.78), Alicia Lala (7th12:07.07), Emile Barrett (9th-12:37.78), Shayli Atashi (15th-13:11.01). Katie Jorczak was the top Ridgecrest runner, taking 15th at 13:13.23.
