Peninsula High Boosters Hold Annual Fundraiser Booster Club

Kicking off the 25th year of the Peninsula High Athletic Booster Club, the annual All Sports Kick-Off party was held at a private residence in Rolling Hills Estates at the beginning of the month.

The free event was for parents of Peninsula High athletes. More than 350 people attended the event, including school administrators, coaches, parents and other supporters of Panther athletics.

"Service PV on the Hill" Gets A New Foundation • Local landmark gets renovated by Peninsula Scouts and PV High baseball players.

By Matthew Gilbertson For over 50 years, the PV sign has sat upon a hill looking over the Palos Verdes High campus. These large block letters, painted red and black, have been a Palos Verdes landmark in the eyes of students and community members.

As time passed, the letters became less vivid, but one senior Sea King worked to ensure that the PV sign would stand out for decades to come.

For his Eagle Scout project, Sander Alley orgainized the renovation of the PV sign, adding a cement backdrop and repainting the red and black letters.

Said Alley, “The PV sign is a big symbol of our community and I thought that fixing it up and making it look nicer would add to the community,”

"PV on the Hill" Set For Another 50 Years . . . Continued from Previous Page The original PV letters, which were put up in the 1960s, were composed of PV stone. They were later replaced by the red and black cement letters that sit above the Lunada Bay Little League fields.

This cement remained intact and did not need to be replaced.

However, there were still improvements to be made to improve the overall appearance.

“You couldn’t see the old sign well because the backdrop was dark brown soil and the "V" was black so it mixed colors with the background. With a light colored backdrop now with the concrete the ‘P’ and the ‘V’ are a lot more vivid, and they stand out in the dirt,” said Alley.

Making A Difference . . . Once the cement had been poured around the PV letters, volunteers placed rocks in the cement and created a border that strengthened the foundation and provided a clean background for the PV letters to be seen from miles away.

Alley explained, “we poured a layer of concrete around the letters and put the local rock, called PV stone, inside (the concrete) to add a more natural look.”

This process took many hours, as Alley and many other volunteers spent a large portion of four days completing the project.

However, there was even more work required prior to starting the physical project as the project needed to be approved by both the high school and school district, and also presented to the Booster Club for a grant.

Many volunteers assisted with Alley’s project, and these volunteers were comprised of other Boy Scouts and several of Alley’s baseball teammates.

“Since the sign is an important part of the community, it was great being able to make it stand out.”

“In the last couple of years a couple of pieces have cracked off, the paint has chipped, and you can’t really tell that there is (the letter) ‘V’ there anymore. So now hopefully [the sign] will last a couple more decades, hopefully 50 more years, and it will keep standing out,” said Alley.

Board Election Shines Light On School Future One incumbent and three challengers vie for two seats on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s Board of Education.

As parents and grandparents of school-aged children, choosing the members of your local Board of Education is an important task. This board, after all, makes the decisions that affect the education of your young ones from the moment they step into a preschool classroom – actually, even before. They decide the size of their classes and the quality of their teachers and administrators, as well as the text books they will use and the curriculum they will be taught.

On Nov. 3, local residents will elect two members of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s Board of Education. Four candidates are vying for two open seats – those of longtime board member Larry Vanden Bos, who did not seek another term, and Linda Reid, who was appointed last year to fill Erin LaMonte’s remaining term. Reid is running to keep her seat, and three challengers, Dawn Lenzie, Barry Rondinella and Suzanne Seymour, are looking to secure one as well.

Panorama asked each of the four candidates several questions so you, our readers, could get to know the candidates and their platforms. Below are their responses.

What is your biggest concern about the school district right now?

LENZIE: My biggest concern for the

district is curriculum – we need to establish a rigorous district-wide curriculum so students and faculty in every classroom have equal access to outstanding, current, relevant texts. The math adoption last year was an excellent start.

REID: 1) Target waste, so that we can re-allocate funds and time, in personnel and processes. 2) Ensure our kids are college competitive even though Common Core math reduces our math curriculum by a year for “average” kids. Demand we keep the pressure on for the highest levels of middle and high school math. 3) Lower costs for parents of sending their kids to public schools, for “extra” activities and classroom materials.

RONDINELLA: I believe over the past few years there has been a trend away from transparency of district decisions and proceedings, a diminishment of administrative accountability and a lack of sound financial stewardship of district resources.

SEYMOUR: How our district allocates

its human capital and financial resources is my biggest concern. Education is a people business.

Parents want great teachers in comfortable classrooms equipped with the latest technology and teaching tools. Our staff is critical to the success of our students. Are we investing in our teachers and other school based staff properly?

We need to find ways to keep lowering the number of students in classes.

We have facilities maintenance issues at every site that need to be compiled and prioritized. The last facilities master plan was developed in 2005. PVPUSD owns some of the most expensive real estate in California and yet we have never been able to maintain it properly.

We need to figure out a long-term solution. Continually asking parents for more money cannot be the long-term solution.

In what areas do you believe the school district excels in, and in what areas do you believe it needs improvement?

a “can-do” culture that is impressive and contagious. Our students themselves are highly motivated, both in the classroom and through their myriad of extracurricular activities. All three of our high schools do a fabulous job of allowing all students to succeed; different leadership styles and different school cultures, can all lead to success in the classroom and we show that in Palos Verdes.

We need to improve in some of our “we have always done it that way” processes, and we need to do better in proactively informing families about district plans. Example of issues where we need to improve are in district-based online summer school; independent study PE; formulating a facilities master plan and addressing infrastructure problems before they become large problems, especially with regard to elementary school playgrounds; and informing parents of software usage at school, like Edmodo.

LENZIE: The district is doing a good job of getting technology into classroom but we need to make better use of it still.

Technology employed meaningfully by staff and students in all classrooms drives creative and collaborative learning and helps students become better prepared learners and readies them for a worldclass future. We owe it to our kids to utilize technology as a two-way communication tool, not just teaching out to them with it, but having students participating with it as well. We have many teachers doing this already; we need to increase the occurrence of it. Additionally, we need to focus on individual students through differentiated instruction so that each student is afforded the opportunity to reach their maximum learning potential.

REID: PVPUSD’s strengths are its teachers, classified staff, and the support network of PEF, PTAs and booster clubs. These school-specific groups are extremely successful and have created

SEYMOUR: Our schools excel at educating our children. Our district administration needs to work on communicating more effectively with parents and other members of the community.

Do you have, or have you had, children attending schools in the PVPUSD? How will this affect your decision-making process on the board?

LENZIE: I have a daughter attend-

ing sixth grade at Miraleste Intermediate School. Before I decided to run for school board I was the PTA president for two years at Rancho Vista Elementary. I participate at school because I want to improve the whole school for all kids, and mine benefits as well, sure, but the community at large is better. This is a unified district. I am working for all of the kids in it, not just mine.

REID: I have two children attending district schools, which affects my decision-making only to the extent that I feel the same frustrations and confront the same issues all parents do. I have been engaged as a voter without exception, and I have worked on legislation issues as a PTA leader, a role I took on in part to educate my children about civic engagement. My kids have been in PVPUSD since kindergarten, and my younger son also attended Sunrise Preschool in Valmonte.

I am a strict parent, so on the discipline side, I do not support poor choices made by our students, nor parents who defend those poor choices. I want all PVPUSD students to become responsible adults.

I talk to a lot of kids every week at all grade levels. Even when coaching my middle school cross-country runners, I talk to them about what concerns them and I bring these concerns to my role as a school board member.

RONDINELLA: I have two daugh-

ters attending Palos Verdes High School.

While their attendance won’t likely affect my decision-making (I am interested in ensuring the highest quality of education possible for all children attending district schools), it is one of the primary reasons I became interested in school board matters and in my decision to run for a seat on the PVPUSD board.

SEYMOUR: Raising and educating

three children in Palos Verdes has provided me with a wealth of experience about our school district. My children attend or attended Mira Catalina Elementary School, Miraleste Intermediate School, and Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools. I have been an active member of the PTA in our schools for over 14 years including three years as EVP and president at Mira Catalina. I love this community and will work diligently to ensure that our schools remain among the top in the nation.

What business or life experiences do you feel prepares you for a position on the school board?

LENZIE: I started right out of college

as a high school social studies teacher – government and economics. Then I went to work at the Greater Augusta Sports Council helping to create the Ray Guy Award for the nation’s top collegiate punter. Upon moving back to Texas, I returned to school for my MPA. Unlike an MBA, which teaches you to run a company, a master’s in public administration, like I have, teaches you to run a school, nonprofit or city. I have done all three. I was the assistant to the town manager who was also the superintendent of schools, and we opened the only townowned charter school in Texas, Westlake Academy. I worked in a city’s Budget Department, helping build and gain approval of two budget cycles. I worked thousands upon thousands of hours at the Junior League of Fort Worth, serving on the board and 10 other placements.

REID: I work with high school students as a college admissions essay advisor, and I know what it takes to succeed, both in college admissions and then once students get to college. In my role as an editor, I know the importance of good writing in general for our students, as well as the importance of foreign languages.

As a parent, I brought to the board’s attention that district administrators were making wholesale pro-Common Core curriculum changes in math without consulting teachers or principals or parents. I got them to add a free summer class to mitigate some of their mistakes.

I also raised the issue of what this change means for science, and forced a reworking of some science prerequisites as well.

I accomplished this real goal on my own,

at great risk to my kids for speaking out.

I also gained the trust of the rest of the board when I did so and they appointed me to the vacant seat last December.

My accomplishments during 10 months on the board: Instrumental in the expansion of our world language program; supported STEM and SCROC; encouraged budgetary restraint while emphasizing infrastructure improvements including air conditioning and preschool playgrounds; ensured Bridge to Algebra program will allow as many children as possible to take eighth grade algebra and be best prepared for the SAT/ACT and entrance to top colleges; supported addition of five full-time teachers during a time of declining enrollment, and reducing elementary combo classes from 10 to eight.

RONDINELLA: I am a former Air Force officer and longtime civil servant and have been active in community service my entire adult life. I would like to bring the knowledge, abilities, skills and habits I have developed over 25 years as an airport executive working with multimillion dollar budgets to service on the school board – I simply want to give back to my community.

SEYMOUR: Volunteering and giving back are second nature to me. While studying business and computer science at USC, I was trained to be a volunteer reading tutor; helping adults and children become better readers has been my life’s passion. I continue to help children with reading and direct an office where tutors help students with all academic subjects.

REID: I am non-partisan and prochild. I have no agenda other than wanting to serve our community. I have no personal anger toward the district, nor do I think everything that goes on is perfect. I conduct myself professionally and I am always well prepared to make the most thoughtful decisions. As an example, when the issue of new state testing came up last year, I thought independently. Our younger students need to learn computer test taking and synthe-

sis of material. However, our 11th graders, overburdened by tests, do not. They were not educated in this new system, so I encouraged these students not to take the test. As a result, our percent of high school test takers was among the lowest in California, because of grass-roots communication with a small group to spread the word at one of our high schools. It was a proud moment, encouraging kids to think for themselves, despite criticism.

Ultimately, what voters really need to ask this November is, who do you trust to make decisions about the issues we haven’t even anticipated yet?

RONDINELLA: Community service and church activities have been a staple throughout my adult life. I currently serve on the Rancho Palos Verdes Emergency Planning Committee and on the board of directors for an international mission organization serving people in countries like Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

As a Palos Verdes Peninsula school board member, I will stress transparency, accountability and sound financial stewardship. It is out of a desire to give back to this incredible community in which we live, that I decided to run for a seat on the Palos Verdes Peninsula school board. It is vital that Palos Verdes continue to excel in all areas essential to the tremendous quality of life we enjoy – especially in the quality of education we provide our children. Employing a simple strategy – TAG (transparency, accountability and good financial stewardship) – I believe we can get back on track and continue our history of academic excellence.

My background and approach seem to be resonating with many in the community. I am honored to say I am the only candidate to receive the endorsement of the South Bay Unified Teachers. I have also received endorsements from the CSEA (California School Employees Association), the classified employees of the district, and the 66th Assembly District Republican Central Committee.

I look forward to serving you.

SEYMOUR: I have worked with diverse members of the community through my 20-plus years as a PTA president, Homeowners Association president, Neighborhood Watch block captain, and Sunday school director. Volunteering and giving back are second nature to me. Raising and educating three children in Palos Verdes has provided me with a wealth of experience in how our schools work and don’t work.

By Dale Pyoun Who doesn’t like to laugh? Who doesn’t like sports? Both are awesome, and there is one popular activity at Peninsula High School that blends the two together: Comedy Sports.

What exactly is Comedy Sports?

As senior Zach Gold puts it, “We are a team that competes in a variety of competitive improvisation games, and we face other schools in sports matches.”

This “sport” essentially captures the art of comedy in a competitive scene with improvisation. Students must think of creative and witty things that would make the audience laugh, Gold explains.

Comedy Sports requires hard work and confidence, especially onstage in front of others, says Gold.

Senior Ben Stout is enjoying his first year as a member, recalling all the benefits of this activity.

“It’s very rewarding to make people laugh with something that just popped into your head,” says Stout.

Held every month, Comedy Sports attracts a lot of attention at both home and away matches. People are anxious to watch these professionals perform because everyone loves a good laugh.

The next match is away against El Segundo High School on Thursday.

Comedy Sports members encourage everyone to come and support the team. Audience involvement is key in this activity and more support is always welcome.

Performed throughout the year, Comedy Sports is an activity that one should attend at least once this year.

It’s an event worth going to.

Library Set For Community Art Show Next Month

Join the Palos Verdes Library District at the opening reception for our annual community art exhibit Art in Our Library.

The Palos Verdes Library District will be holding the opening reception for Art in Our Library, a community art exhibition on November 14 from 5-7 pm at the Peninsula Center Library located at 701 Silver Spur Rd. in Rolling Hills Estates. Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

• It’s a sad day for the community as Peninsula High School announces the forfeiture of the final three varsity football games of the season - including the rivalry game against Palos Verdes.

There are a lot of upset people on the Peninsula right now, I hope most of them are not that surprised.

At the beginning of the season a school with more than 2,600 students fielded a varsity football team of 27 players. With three games left to play, the team is down to 21 healthy bodies.

Right now I’m not thinking about the reasons this decline in interest has happened, although some of the reasons are obvious and have been coming for some time.

Reasons, such as: the decline in the number of youth football teams on the Hill, open enrollment, perceptions of the sport’s dangers and, perhaps, a different culture and attitude on campus about football and everything that goes with it.

I don’t blame coaches, administrators or the athletes who choose not to play football at Peninsula, but there needs to be an open discussion between the school, players and parents before and during the season so a dramatic midseason decision does not come as a great shock to the community.

These Are My Guys . . . The Peninsula High football team enjoys a day at the beach together this past summer.

Alternative and back-up plans should be in place and everyone -- players, coaches and parents -- should know what these alternatives are.

This almost happened last season and the season before. I have brought up the subject with Peninsula High administrators and parents over the last few years, and it’s been like the elephant in the room that no one really wants to talk about.

2,600 students and less than 30 want to play varsity football. That’s the real problem.

With all that being said, that’s not what I’m thinking about this week.

You see, these Panthers football play-

PEN Zookeeper Set To Make This Better • The Peninsula High Zookeepers will keep spirits high and get the school ready for Homecoming in two weeks.

By Dale Pyoun Peninsula High School officials have produced high drama on the hill with their decision to forfeit the football team’s last three games.

The decision was passed by the coaches, trainers, and administration to address safety concerns that Peninsula football faces.

Because of injuries over the course of the year, the team had only 21 players left on the squad. Although the football team worked hard every day to make up for this deficit in players, the administration took action.

Peninsula’s spirit leader, aka the

Zookeeper, had this to say: I understand the rationale behind the decision and support it wholeheartedly. Yet, it cannot be mistaken that these football players, especially the seniors, deserve the opportunity to play the game they love.

On the Peninsula campus, there is definitely a sense of pain and animosity from the student body, especially since football is such an integrated facet of high school.

Disappointment has pervaded to more than just the players. The student section feels wronged by this decision as well. As the school spirit leader, I understand how detrimental this decision is towards school spirit. Having the team forfeit its last three games of the season is no small event.

Goodbye Peninsula Football

Students and parents around the hill are extremely frustrated and disappointed in Peninsula High School’s administration’s decision to disband the football team due to “safety issues.”

Definitely the worst choice that could have been made, this event shows the incapability of Mitzi Cress, the principal, Wendell Yoshida, the athletic director, and the rest of the administration to manage both the school and team.

Football and high school are almost synonymous these days. Friday games allow the school to showcase their spirit and unite together as one.

Taking this away from a school prevents the student body from forming important memories and lasting relationships that are much more pertinent in the long run than any academic achievements or classes taken. Mitzi Cress, Wendell Yoshida, and the entire administration have made this important aspect of high school impossible to experience any longer.

This decision was also terrible due to the effect on Peninsula’s football players, especially the seniors. They have worked all summer and put in blood, sweat, and tears to achieve their goals and this has all been rendered a waste due to the failure of the administration.

The majority of the seniors will never step on a football field again after this year, and now they will miss out on the end of their season and the highly anticipated rivalry game against Palos Verdes. The administration’s stupidity and lack of concern for the feelings of the football players highlights serious flaws and shows that they do not deserve to be in charge of an incredible school like Peninsula.

The argument for disbanding the football team made by Mitzi Cress and the entire administration is unsubstan-

tial and outright absurd. They stated that too many of Peninsula’s players played both offense and defense, as the team only has 21 healthy varsity players at this time. But, this argument is completely void of any merit. Many other teams in both the South Bay and the country play with just as many players as the Panthers, sometimes even less. No other school ends the football program and quits on its players when faced with these challenges.

The administration at Peninsula failed to uphold the values that it preaches to its students: integrity, persistence, and loyalty. Such an administration should not be in control of Peninsula, for this school deserves people who are willing to do what is best for the students and stand by them through thick and thin.

Mitzi Cress, Wendell Yoshida, and Mike Christensen, the football coach, all failed in their duties to the players on the team and the student body as a whole. None of them would stand up and do what was right. These people took the cowardly way out and let down each and every player on the team who counted on them and had faith in them to make the right decision. It is unimaginable how anyone could choose to do something like this to a school and team.

As a senior and captain on Peninsula’s football team, this issue is extremely relevant to me, and I speak for the entire football team in this article. The school, administration, and coaches let us down. They taught us to face challenges head on, and now they refuse to follow that ideology. I am appalled at how hypocritical they are and am extremely saddened by their dreadful decision. I will always cherish my memories of playing football at Peninsula, and I only wish that I could have finished my career the right way. It is such a disappointing way to end our season.

Sea Kings Keep The Streak Going Varsity Football • The Palos Verdes High football team continues to excel in Bay League action.

By Dean Porter The Palos Verdes High School Sea Kings extended their Bay League league winning streak to 25 games last week against the Inglewood Sentinels.

The Sea Kings came into the game with a 3-3 record after a tight victory over their first league opponent, the Mira Costa Mustangs, winning 9-7.

PV dominated Inglewood the entire game, winning 49-6.

Impressive performances were turned in by junior running back Adison Umarong, who rushed for 159 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns, and junior running back Robert Gilbertson, who rushed for 71 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown.

Senior running backs Andres De Mier and Connor Cicchetti both had touchdown runs for the Sea Kings.

Junior tight end Shane Irwin continued to be a strong presence for the Sea Kings. Irwin had 3 catches for 23 yards and a touchdown.

A big factor to the success of the Sea Kings this year has been their defense.

The defense in the last four games has held teams to an average of five points per game with one shutout.

The heart and soul of the defense comes from the defensive line, led by seniors Reid Helton and Dennis Harjo.

Helton and Harjo have a combined total of 53 tackles and are looking to raise that number in the weeks to come.

Harjo said, “the defensive line has been doing a great job, doing what we need to do and as long as we keep it up our defense will just continue to get better and better, and I don’t see anything getting in the way of that.”

Coaching the defensive line is 2004 Sea King graduate Francesco Vaccaro.

Vaccaro said, “Harjo and Helton are those seniors that figure it out and are having a great senior year. They are a

Peninsula Just Gets Past Palos Verdes Girls Volleyball • The Peninsula High girls’ volleyball team is ready for Bay League a

By Dale Pyoun Rivalries always make for the best stories. On the Hill, there is one matchup everyone always looks forward to: Palos Verdes High School against Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.

Regardless of the sport, there is always a sense of pride and intensity whenever these two are paired.

This held true on Oct. 15 when the Peninsula girls’ volleyball team faced their rivals from Palos Verdes. Proven time and time again, the matchup was close and exciting. Crowds were formed on each side of the court chanting for both Panthers and Sea Kings.

In the match, Peninsula swept PV in a close battle in all three sets, winning 25-18, 25-22, 25-20. Panthers senior captain Kori Rasmussen performed at

a very high level with many kills to lead the offense.

Great hitting could not have been possible without great setting by senior Hannah Hulbert. Both ladies performed at a very high level.

Even more incredible was Tiana Clark’s return to the game after a midgame injury (broken wrist). Senior Alexa McCoy finished the game off by scoring the last two points.

“I think that it was so awesome seeing how our hard work paid off and we got the W,” McCoy said after the game.

Palos Verdes put up a great fight with senior Claire Catlin leading the way. The Sea Kings showed resilience and fought for every play.

Still, even with their collective efforts, it was not enough to stop the Panthers from winning.

Fans will be anxiously waiting to see another spectacle of competitive volleyball when the Panthers and Sea Kings meet again on Nov. 3.

• Palos Verdes tackle football teams went 5-0 in the final regular season games at Palos Verdes High.

The Mitey Mite PV Sidewinders finished the regular season with its best effort and got a 22-6 win over the Pasadena Trojans.

The Jr. Pee Wee PV Rattlers battled to a 14-12 win over the Woodcrest Generals.

The PV Mustangs continue to dominate the Pee Wee Division. The team finished the regular season on the road, but managed a 46-7 thumping of the Santa Clarita Vikings Purple.

“For any other team they would be playing defensive end but for us they play tackle, which makes the D-line super athletic and are able to pass rush and stop the run sideline to sideline.”

The Sea Kings look to extend their 25 league game winning streak against the Morningside Monarchs this Friday.

The streak dates back to the 2010 football season against a team that no longer is in the Bay League - West Torrance High School.

Even though West High is no longer in the same league as PV, the Sea Kings seems to always find a way to play them in the playoffs and there is a strong rivalry between West and PV. Palos Verdes beat West 28-7 on Oct.

29, 2010 and most recently beat them 28-16 in 2014 during semi-finals of last year’s Sea King CIF Championship run.

The Sea Kings have the Morningside Monarchs (6-1) (1-1 league) this week who are coming off their first loss of the season, so they are expected to be pumped up and give the Sea Kings a fight.

After Morningside, the Sea Kings have the Redondo Sea Hawks (6-1) (2-0 league) at home on Oct. 30, a major advantage for the Sea Kings because of the 3 p.m. game start.

Unfortunately, sad news struck the Hill this week when the Peninsula Panthers announced that due to injuries and lack of players they have decided to cancel the rest of their season.

That means that the Hill rivalry game between the Sea Kings and the Peninsula Panthers will not be played this year.

When he’s not playing defensive back for the Panthers, he’s breaking school records by catching 40-yard touchdown passes.

And like all Peninsula and Palos Verdes High athletes, boy or girl, he’s one of my guys.

He’s a PANORAMA kid. He’s a Youth Sports News kid. We root for Jack. We root for Peninsula football.

This a tight group of young men, and having been told that their season is over is not going over well. Especially for seniors.

But there is one final game to be

played against Inglewood and I’m hoping all Peninsula High seniors will be there to root for their classmates and show the community how much they care.

Football will be back at Peninsula High next year. It’s not going away just yet. There’s too much Panthers pride in this community for it to fade away.

This should be a wake up call for the Hill.

We have two high schools up here with close to 4,500 students and with those numbers there really should be two healthy football programs on the Hill.

I expect this community to do what it takes to make that happen.

Sure, this was the right call. Safety is the priority but ending on such an abrupt note has been tough for everyone. Yet, it is during these hard times

when leaders shine, and I know that I have a role to fill within my community.

I know that spirit has deteriorated over the past couple days, but I will try to earn it back. For the sake of Homecoming coming up. For the sake of Spirit week in a few weeks. For the sake of Peninsula.

PVIS Takes Over Mt. SAC Again!

Cross Country • PVIS dominated the 68th annual Mt. SAC Invitational, the world’s largest cross country meet, winning an unprecedented five team titles and posting the fastest overall team time in all six races it entered.

No middle school had ever won more than three team titles in a single season at Mt. SAC until PVIS won four titles last year.

The Sea Kings on Friday not only swept the women’s team titles for the second consecutive season but added the 7th and 6th grade boys crowns in addition to placing five runners on the Top 3 award podium, and claiming 16 of the coveted Mt. SAC Top 15 medals on an overcast Friday afternoon that saw more than 1,200 competitors race over the storied rolling 2-mile course.

The PVIS 7th grade girls turned in the performance of the day, blowing the away field with five-runner score of 33, 57 points ahead of runner-up Pinon Mesa (90) with Dartmouth third (96). The Sea Kings were so dominant that if PVIS’ sixth through 10th runners were a separate team they would have finished second overall.

Bronze medalist Gabi Collatos (13 minutes, 49 second) and fourth place finisher Alexandra Chi (14:04) led a parade of eight PVIS runners in the first 13 finishers. Chaya Holyfield (7th14:27), Ella Frost (9th-14:45) and Bella Martinez (10th-14:38) also crashed the Top 10. Right behind them were Lauren Naehu (11th-14:49), Madeline Stone (12th-14:53) and Katie Sasselli

(13th-14:56). Rounding out the PVIS finishers were Charlotte Teets, who after scorching opening mile held on for an impressive 23rd place finish in 15:27, Claire Hardesty (35th-16:08), Mackenzie Whitehead (37th-16:12), Malena Innocent (53rd-17:02), Victoria Moll (54th-17:05), Peyton Eberhard (56th-17:09), and Shelby Ponce (58th-17:21).

The Sea Kings 8th grade girls started the PVIS victory party by adding the 8th grade title to the Mt. SAC team crowns they won as 6th and 7th graders. As the race turned up Mt. SAC’s notorious Switchbacks climb and the course’s final third, the PVIS victory was already apparent. The Sea Kings finished with 32 points well ahead of runner-up Quail Valley (70) and third place Mountain View (93).

Savannah Scriven claimed third place with a 13:08 clocking. Penny Pope joined Natalie Watson as the only PVIS girls to finish in the Top 10 at Mt. SAC all three seasons, finishing in 13:30 for fifth place. Sydney Myrick joined the pair in the Top 10 (10th13:54) while Mikayla Keshtkar also secured a Mt. SAC Top 15 medallion

Frankie Reid turned in the day’s top individual performance leading the 8th grade boys race the entire way only to be edged by Mountain View’s Austin Sims at the finish line. Reid’s 11:56 clocking was the second fastest PVIS mark ever on the Mt. SAC course.

The Sea Kings finished second (84) to Quail Valley (68) with Grace Yokley (99) third.

Dane Dawson turned in the latest in a series of big races this season, finishing 5th in 12:39. Andrew Peterson also had a big day just missing the Top 15, clocking in at 13:18 for 16th. Spencer Stacy (30-13:51), Matthew Wilhem (39-14:12), Sam Tomlinson (53-14:35), Marco Robles (59-14:51), Yusuke Sugawa (63-14:56) and Jackson Belke (92-16:05) rounded out the Sea King finishers.

The Sea Kings put three finishers in the Top 10, six in the Top 20 to win the Mt. SAC 7th grade boys title. PVIS’s 48 points gave the Sea Kings a comfortable victory with San Gorgonio second at 90, Grace Yokley third at 96 with crosstown rival Ridgecrest fourth

at 181.

Kevin Rahman (2nd-12:10) edged teammate Ewan Macfarlane (3rd12:11) and Ridgecrest’s Toby WakefieldCarl (4th-12:16). Rahman’s clocking set a new PVIS 7th grade mark for the Mt. SAC course.

There were plenty of red jerseys right behind them with Koa Vetterlein finishing 9th in 12:52, Tor Gasteiger 15th (13:17), Ryan Hori 19th (13:29) and Jake Spivey 20th (13:33).

Yuta Morikawa (54th-14:45), Owen Landinig (55th-14:47), Graydon Leongkaye (106th-16:10), Ryan Anderson (114th-16:27) and Ryan Kramer (115th-16:35).

PVIS clinched the 6th grade boys team title with a series of late surges by its top five runners, finishing with 62 points, 12 ahead of runner-up Culver City. Marine View was third at 92.

Luke Wells led the late rush at 11th in 13:48 with Dylan Booth taking 13th in 14:05. Then came Scott Riegel (23rd-14:36), Quentin Ruiz (24th14:36), William Kirk (30th-14:58) and Gento Shimakawa (31st-14:59). Owen Park (42nd-15:07), Ryan Roche (45th15:09) and Charlie Simpson (49th15:13).

The Sea Kings’ 6th grade girls rounded out the record-setting afternoon with a victory in the day’s last race. Palos Verdes finished with 58 points with both Chaparral and Hillview schools totaling 86 points, Chaparral taking second on the tie-breaker.

Jenna Peterson was the Sea Kings’ top finisher at 12th (14:51) with Anna Terrell (17th-15:16), Emilie Barrett (22nd-15:21) and Alicia Lala (25th-15:26) also making the Top 25.

Shayli Atashi (26th-15:29), Isabella Brannan (31st-16:10) and Grace Bonvechio (54th-16:59) completed the PVIS victory.
