Volunteers Work On Local Gardens Local Service • The Peninsula has many community gardens that are cared for by local residents, volunteers and service groups.

By Katie Hageman The Point Vicente Interpretive Center is a beautiful spot in the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, where people walk on the paths, have or attend a wedding, or just enjoy the view of the Pt. Vicente Lighthouse and the Pacific Ocean.

In order to make the Interpretive Center more beautiful, a garden was planted about 10 years ago with the idea to create and maintain a garden filled with plants native to Southern California.

Throughout the years, the garden has been growing and thriving. At the moment, the sunflower is the most abundant plant. The garden is currently undergoing a transformation in which more native plants will be introduced and other plants will be uncovered from beneath the surrounding sunflowers.

The upkeep and transformation of these plants would not be possible without Megan Roy, manager of the Native Plant Garden at the Center. Roy started working with the garden a few months ago and has continued to be a leader in the garden effort.

Every month, volunteers from around the Peninsula community meet at the Center’s Native Plant Garden and work to make improvements.

“I enjoyed helping out at this event

Volunteers prune flowers, rake leaves and turn the soil in preparation for new native plants and the change of season. because it enabled me to help improve a wonderful part of our community,” said Makenna Toumaian, a youth volunteer.

The most recent volunteer day was Sunday, Oct. 16. On that morning, volunteers completed a variety of tasks from pruning and deadheading plants to collecting seeds.

“Volunteering at the garden cleanup was very rewarding because we all did small tasks, but collectively they made a big difference and improved the community,” said Aaryanna Dawson-Sarabia, another youth volunteer.

A Culinary Journey

Simple Easy Dishes Are In Season For Busy Families

The school year is back and there is no time for complicated and time consuming dishes. I have a simple and easy dinner that can solve the problem.

Sheet pan dinners are the solution.

Sheet pan dinners consist of a protein and two vegetables or if you want two proteins and a vegetable. You start with picking ingredients that have a similar cooking time.

If you are trying to get rid of ingredients like a kitchen sink sheet pan dinner and the ingredients don’t have the same cooking time then cook the ingredient for a little longer than the other ingredients.

My favorite sheet pan dinner is cauliflower/broccoli with potatoes and chicken or Brussel sprouts with chicken.

I start out by cutting the potatoes into cubes and then coating them in olive oil, salt and pepper; and then add an herb such as rosemary chopped for extra flavor. I cook the potatoes at 350 for 5-15 minutes.

While the potatoes are cooking I start on the chicken. I use chicken breasts which I personally like to coat in a dry rub but you can use a sauce or a simple salt and pepper would also work. The chicken is sliced widthwise so that the thinner pieces cook faster.

I then coat the cauliflower in olive

oil and then chopped up garlic and onions, salt, and pepper. If you don’t have onions and garlic, garlic and onion powder will do. I then add the cauliflower and chicken to the partially cooked potatoes and I leave them in the oven for at least 45 minutes or until cooked all the way through.

If you want to cook a vegetable that needs water added or will release water while cooking, you can make a small bowl out of foil to separate it from the

rest of the ingredients. You can do the same with for chicken with barbecue sauce when you don’t want the other ingredients to get barbecue sauce on them.

Charlie Is Back At PV High musical • Musical hit "You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown" set to take the stage at PV High

by Charles M. Schultz, the hit musical “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” will be presented by the Palos Verdes High School Drama Department for eight performances, Oct. 28 through Nov. 6.

According to PVHS drama teacher Nicole Thompson, “It’s a heartwarming musical that we can all relate to, young and old. As a parent, I’m excited to share the experience with my children. The ‘Peanuts’ gang was such a big part of my childhood, and it continues to be for my children.”

This family-friendly play brings back the beloved and famed characters in a new and fresh way. Everyone’s favorite ‘blockhead’ - Charlie Brown - is joined by his original crew, including his sister Sally, blanket-hugging Linus, know-itall Lucy, Beethoven devotee Schroeder, and of course his best friend Snoopy.

Together, they experience adventures and learn life lessons on everything from flying a kite, to writing a book report, to playing baseball, and to combating the Red Baron.

“Like the comic strip, the musical is full of life’s lessons, reminding us that the little moments in life can make a world of difference,” said Thompson, who also directs the show. Vocal direction is by Sue Secrist, with choreography by Christopher Albrecht.

The production stars Thomas Applewhite as Charlie Brown, Hallie Kostrencich as Lucy, Joey Bacon as Schroeder, Brooke Vanderdonck as Sally, Michael Ticknor as Linus, and Kailee Kakazu as Snoopy.

Applewhite, in his first lead role, is sure to bring a fresh twist to this wellloved classic. He is excited about this

new step in his acting career. According to him, his favorite part of the process has been being able to play Charlie Brown.

“So far I’ve loved playing this character because I really connect with him and the different parts of his personality, and that’s a really special thing for me and for any actor to be blessed with the part”, said Applewhite, when asked about his role.

This fun and light-hearted show is a must see for more than one reason.

According to Kostrencich, who plays the role of Lucy, this play is unique and special due to its meaningful simplicity.

When asked further about what makes the musical special, Kostrencich said, “The characters are ages 6-8, so they are very simple-minded, but they convey life lessons that can only be explained through the use of younger kids.”

Kostrencich added, “It is special because it is a small cast made up of many young characters that are able to shed light on adult problems and give their insights on life’s greatest mysteries and challenges; they make it funny and interesting to learn and think about because they are such young people having such mature thoughts.”

Performances are Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 3-5 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 30 and Nov. 5-6 at 2 p.m. in the MPR at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road in Palos Verdes Estates.

Following each matinee performance, audience members are invited to a meet the cast in the theater courtyard.

Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

We’ve been lucky here at Panorama headquarters that we have had so many people wanting to contribute to our publication.

It began many years ago with Austin Welch, who is about ready to graduate from Darmouth. And, of course, Duncan Reid, who began writing for the paper in the 4th grade and is now a first-year student at Oberlin College.

We also had Matt Gilbertson on staff for a few years, and he is now studying at the University of Pennsylvania.

Our first “official” intern was Tyler Patterson, who is back East enrolled at some small private school called - Yale.

The legendary Jack Grimes is now at UC Berkeley and former PEN zookeeper

Dale Pyoun I believe is at Georgetown.

We’ve still got big Dean Porter and Joey Moussalli on board, and Alexis Ferguson still sends us her cooking column and colorful foodie pictures right around the lunch hour just to makes us crazy.

But for the past month or so we’ve been adding more names to the Panorama batting order, and we are just about ready to break out the new staff. We’re still not operating at full speed, but when we do - watch out!

So check out the new names in the new staff box. Some names are new, some have been there awhile.

Only the Big Daddy Nikon camera guy knows which names are that of 6th graders, and which names are parents of 6th graders.

And only a select few know which names are students and which schools

they attend, and which are names of Peninsula seniors, and which hospital gyms they attend.

Readers can expect a lot more profile stories like the one in this edition of longtime football coach Larry Joe Campbell.

We’ll also have a lot more local features, community news and stories on nonsports subjects.

There will also be space available for the staff to express their thoughts and opinions on subjects that effect their lives and the lives of their friends and family.

We’ll always cover sports - big. From TBall to high school varsity and everything in between. But there are plans for us do a lot more than follow the bouncing ball.

Panorama is about community. It’s about our schools, kids and families.

We’re in our 10th year of publishing; it’s time to join the home team.

Love Of Acting, Football Lifts Campbell

• Entertainment and football help drive new Peninsula High freshman football coach to success on and off the field.

• The Peninsula High freshman football team has a new winning spirit for life and happiness thanks to its coaches.

When we see our favorite actors on television, we sit and watch as they entertain us. When we go to a football game, we hear the screams and yells of all the fans, especially the yells of the coaches.

These two topics, acting and coaching, seem to have no middle ground and cannot be done by one person, but Peninsula’s freshman football coach, Larry Joe Campbell, has managed to balance his performing career with his love of coaching football.

Campbell attended Central Michigan University, where he undoubtedly decided to work in the television industry. After receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theater, he pursued his passion of acting and began to search for roles he could play.

His first major on screen role was “Andy” in the ABC show “According to Jim.” His debut in the show gained the attention of 10 million people during the first season.

“When you do television and become a regular on a series, you realize that who you are playing is your writer’s character,” Campbell said. “When you really get deep into it as time goes on, it becomes your own character.”

Campbell also created his own improv show in 2004, called “313,’ with other actors such as Nyima Funk, Maribeth Monroe, Keegan-Michael Key, Marc Warzecha, Marc Evan Jackson,

Larry Campbell, the head coach of the Peninsula Panthers freshman football team, has an intricate background in how he became a football coach to how it impacted his life From playing football in high school, he learned the values of being part of a team, the accountability it creates, the work ethic it takes to be successful, and how to take failure.

These values were instilled in him at a young age and even proved to be beneficial in the entertainment aspect of his life and career.

Campbell has quite the schedule with both his coaching and acting careers. From going on last-minute auditions to being at every practice and game, it is no misconception that the two do not always reside with one another.

Not Your Average Joe . . . Larry

Joe Campbell has been actively involved with youth coaching and the Peninsula community for more than 10 years, and with the entertainment industry for a lot longer.

“In Hollywood you might get pigeonholed into a specific genre of film, like comedy or drama, but when you first have an affection for what you are doing in your craft, you would have to dig in and play someone completely unlike yourself,” Campbell said.

His entertainment side has hit a little bit of a low, he says, but he looks at it as a sign to spend more time with his five kids, and he gets to coach his second oldest, which he said he would not give up for the world.

After he and Rick Smith were done coaching their Pop Warner kids, he was left without a team but still had the drive and desire to continue coaching.

Hence, they were invited to be a part of the freshman football team at Peninsula High.

Campbell says that he “really credits football for saving my life” with all that he has endured from a young age.

He loves to see kids play football and believes football instills lessons that you use for the rest of your life, and it has made him both a better husband and father.

He says his primary responsibility as a coach is to help parents “groom these young men to be men built for others to save a world that desperately needs saving.”

A New Energy . . . A new spirit and attitude as enveloped the Peninsula High football program from the varsity team to the freshman team.

The Undefeated . . . The Peninsula High freshman football team is a large and enthusiastic bunch that has yet to lose a game this season.

Sea Kings Take Down Mira Costa Water Polo • Peninsula High plays host for Palos Verdes as Sea Kings outlast Mira Costa and move into first place in the Bay League

Sea Kings Rule The Water . . .

The Palos Verdes boys water polo team faced off against league-leading Mira Costa in a home league game.

However, one thing was different for the Kings: the home game was played at Peninsula High School. Due to a heating issue in the Palos Verdes pool, the game was moved.

As senior Quinn Stoneman said, “It felt weird taking a bus to a home game, but we tried to not let it affect us.”

The Sea Kings did just that, outlasting Mira Costa’s furious comeback in the final minutes, by winning 7-6.

This marked the first victory for Palos Verdes over the Mustangs since 2013, a streak that lasted nine games.

Led by seniors David Feingold and Stoneman, who had four goals in the game, the Kings jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage after the first quarter.

Heading into halftime, the Sea Kings led by the same score, as both teams defended well.

Two fourth quarter goals from Stoneman proved to be just enough to sustain the 5-2 lead PV had built.

Stoneman’s goals made the score 7-4, before Mira Costa scored two goals in a span of just a few minutes to bring them within one.

The Mustangs rally would stop there, however, as a stellar defensive

When considering a play in football, there are many positions, and the roles that they play in a certain play.

Likewise, in acting there is a specific place to stand, a way to talk and to move for the character an actor has assumed.

Being onstage and acting in front of many people is similar to coaching a football team in front of many students. To memorize a script for a show, actors must take the time to learn the lines and rehearse them over and over again.

Football plays are the same with the players running through the plays multiple times to engrain them into their heads. Campbell says that the similarities of acting and coach-

Coaching football with high school students and being on call for auditions have conflicted with each other in Campbell’s life.

He is torn when this happens because he loves both so much. However, the entertainment career side has reached a point where the offers are not flowing in steadily.

With this, Campbell sees it as a sign to spend more time with his kids and continue to coach Peninsula’s undefeated Panthers.

PV, PEN Runners Attack Bay League Cross Country • The Palos Verdes cross country course played host to a Bay League meet last week with the Sea Kings and Panthers taking charge.

The PV boys’ varsity and junior varsity teams finished in second place while the freshman team took first.

Peninsula finished in fourth place in all three boys races.

Maverick Gold Wins Bobcat Championship Pop Warner • The PV Mavericks Gold defeated the PV Mavericks Red in the Bobcat Division championship game last week.

The Mavericks Gold scored a touchdown and converted a two-point conversion in the final minutes before holding on the PV Mavericks Red, 13-6, at Palos Verdes High.

The Mavericks Red team drove to the five-yard line in the final minute of play behind a great 40-yard pass and catch, but ran out of time before they could make a play for the end zone.

Pumpkins Fly High At Ridgecrest Pumpkin Chuck

holding the annual “Pumpkin Chuck” for many years as a part of its science and engineering programs.

Aim For Highridge Park . . . The sling shots at the Ridgecrest Pumpkin

Chuck went the farthest of all the student-built machines.

• Ridgecrest Intermediate held its annual Pumpkin Chuck last week as students sacrificed many pumpkins in the name of science and engineering.

Students constructed catapults, air guns and slingshots and competed throughout the week with the finals held at the upper soccer field with hundreds of spectators.

As expected, the slingshots threw the pumpkins the greatest distance, easily covering the length of a soccer field before disintegrating on the lower fields.

The air guns were loud and powerful, but took considerable effort with an air pump before being ready to launch the smallest pumpkins of the competition.

most ingenious of all the contraptions built by the students. The machines included various moving parts with pulleys and levers.

PVIS Continues Mt. SAC Excellence

• It was another historic afternoon for Palos Verdes Intermediate School at the 69th annual Mt. SAC cross country invitational, the world’s biggest cross country meet.

By Frankie Reid The Sea Kings swept the 8th grade boys and girls races, despite running without injured veteran standout Chaya Holyfield. The PVIS 8th grade girls became only the fourth team to win team titles as 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

PVIS was also the only school to place among the top three teams in five races at the 2016 edition of the meet that featured more than 2,400 athletes

Following Bella Martinez’s sixth place finish (13:50) and Lauren Naehu in 14th (14:25), Stone and Hardesty each passed five opponents in the final 500 meters to finish 27th (15:06) and 33rd (15:19) for 66 points, just five ahead of runner-up Hillview School.

The Sea Kings victory was the 11th consecutive race over a three-year period at Mt. SAC in which PVIS posted the fastest overall team time.

Ridgecrest was 10th at 258.

The Sea Kings got the day started by winning the 8th grade boys team title.

Depth, again, was the deciding factor. Ewan MacFarlane led the way for PVIS in 10th place (12:37), with Koa Vetterlein 13th (12:54). The trio of Yuta Morikawa 23rd (13:09), Tor Gasteiger 28th (13:19) and newcomer Jim Campbell 33rd (13:35) locked up the win, PVIS rolling to a 95 to 132 victory against Goddard.

Ridgecrest was 8th at 192. Miraleste led by Ryan Glover’s 9th place finish (12:36) was 12th at 285.

The PVIS 7th grade girls, like their 8th grade teammates, clinched third place in the team standings in a loaded race in the closing stages.

Anna Terrell was in 16th place (14:48), followed by surprising Julia Masuda in 19th (15:28). But it was not until the final 800 meters that the Sea Kings Alicia Lala 20th (15:34), Shayli Atashi 23rd (15:39), Grace Bonvechio 24th (15:40) and Sarah Gilchrist 26th (15:44) nailed down a spot on the podium with 97 points.

PVIS also took third in 6th grade races. The Sea King boys finishing with 159 points and the girls 139. Ridgecrest was fifth in the boys race (251), and 12th in the girls (301).
