• The Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ Fast-Pitch Softball League is looking for girls that want to have fun, make friends and learn how to play great softball Palos Verdes Girls Softball is a game of three Cs, Confidence, Camaraderie and Competition.

Softball allows girls who play to develop confidence in their athletic abilities in a fun and supportive environment. It fosters girls’ growth through learning to play the game and cooperation with their teammates.

As the girls’ softball abilities increase, so does their overall confidence and self-assurance. We routinely provide clinics to hone skills and build confidence.

Softball is a team game and we strive to encourage camaraderie throughout the league. We encourage higher level players to mentor and cheer for the younger players. We also

Wait For Me . . . The Middle School

PVIS had seven top-10 individual finishes and was the only school to finish in the top three in the team standings in four races.

The race results showed incredible performances from all PVIS runners.

The 8th grade girls won first place, adding yet another title to its class. The PVIS title follows its sweeping the 8th grade girls team championship the previous three years at the Mt. SAC Invitational, the world’s largest cross country meet.

Anna Terrell helped her teammates to victory by finishing her race in exactly 12 minutes. Grace Bonvechio and Shayli Atashi followed not far behind Terrell with clockings of 13:22.4 (Bonvechio) and 13:29.0 (Atashi).

Alicia Lala, Karen Hirano, Julia Masuda and Greta Norris all finished close together and sealed the victory with times of 13:47.6 (Lala),13:50.2 (Hirano), 14:16.2 (Masuda), and 14:21.6 (Norris).

An extravagant race by 8th grader Matthew Cartmill, with a time of 11:27.9, led his team to a second place finish. He drove a pack behind him, including William Kirk (11:57.2), Trystan Sheldon (12:04.2), J.P. Warner (12:25.2), and Dylan Booth with a great finish of 12:26.4.

The seventh grade boys’ team finished 4th.

Matthew Farnsworth finishing first for the Sea Kings, clocking in at 11:57.0. Behind him followed Kai Shikiya (13:02.1), Daniel Chu (13:05.7), Owen Chas (13:10.0), Max Orsinger (13:21.6), Karsten Wanke (13:27.8), Dylan Bigley (13:28.7), Zach Moore (13:48.6), Cole Yamane (13:56.7), and Jake Yamane (14:31.2).

Despite battling injuries to key runners in recent weeks, the Sea Kings nearly upset Hillview in a 7th grade girls race that wasn’t decided until the final meters. Hillview just held off PVIS 75-80.

Sixth grade Sea Kings Natalie Wang (13:45.4) and Maddie Farnsworth (14:28.9) barely missed the top three teams for their race. They finished with an outstanding tie for third with Clement Middle School and only missed the third place team by 97 seconds.

PVIS sixth grade boy, Adam Hardesty, finished 8th place overall with a time of 12:51.2. Not far behind followed Michael Mackiewicz (12:57.6), Alex Naehu (13:03.2), Tobias Rodriguez (13:07.5), and Ross Borden (13:19.6).

These young middle schoolers have shown great teamwork and outstanding performances in cross country.

Without the help of their great coaches, Scott Reid, Linda Reid, Martha Espinoza, Roger Booth, Caroline Hardesty, and Frank Ponce, these amazing athletes wouldn’t have been able to put on such a great show at the Middle School California State Championships.

High Schoolers Gear Up For PSAT

Test Test Test

• Local students prepare for testtaking season with workshops, turtors and more testing.

By Chiara Grimes At the first flush of morning on Wednesday, Oct. 11, while many PEN and PV students were reveling in their opportunity to sleep in until the incessant school bell at 10:40, other students were seated in their chairs taking the three-hour national test, the PSAT (Preliminary SAT).

While some students were enjoying a 9 a.m. relaxed breakfast with peers, others were ruminating on which formula to use in the above math question.

Even the night before, while many students were staying up later than usual anticipating extra sleep time, other students were scurrying for nonmechanical #2 pencils and erasers and making sure their calculator would be college board approved.

So why undergo this endeavor?

Well, for many juniors, it is considered the National Merit Qualifying Test, which they can submit to an echelon college to display their strengths.

For others, it’s practice. Eventually, almost every student will undergo the studying and motivation put in to take either the SAT or ACT. Just the experi-

ence of taking the PSAT illuminates students on where they are academically and emulates the actual SAT, familiarizing students and enhancing preparedness.

“I have been reading my Barron’s SAT prep book ahead of time so that I feel somewhat prepared for the PSAT,” says Maxine Bennett, a junior at Peninsula.

“The night before, I plan to review using the same book a little bit and go to bed earlier than usual so I am rested and ready to go for the test,” she said.

Many students like Bennett prepare, some more hardcore than others.

Even so, there are also many individuals that take it merely for the experience.

Others reflected on how they felt after the PSAT. “The PSAT was an exciting endeavor filled with an interesting reading section on tomatoes and electric toothbrushes and a math section, which had everyone scrambling to recall standard deviation” said Peninsula junior Josh Kahen.

Whether students were forced by their parents to take this three-hour test or not, they all earned experience without penalty on what these tests inquire and how to prepare for the “real deal”.

• The first paycheck received by a high schooler is the day they realize that they do not have to rely on their parents to provide for them.

By Nina Li Of course, that is not the case, but the feeling is still there. As teenagers, earning money and being able to use that money to purchase anything is an amazing experience.

Whether it be buying food anytime or just being able to use the vending machine at school with self-earned dollars helps teenagers realize that working, while it might be tedious, has many benefits. However, along with the freedom and independence comes responsibilities.

“When I first got paid, I was overjoyed,” Kumon employee Anne Lee said. “The elation I felt dimmed when my parents expected me to pay for my own lunches and be able to manage my money well.

I never learned how to keep track of where all my money goes, but work has made me realize that to be successful and not blow all my money at one time, I need to keep myself in check and think of the consequences,” Lee said.

Teenagers, while they may be smart in their classes, have not been taught how to maintain their money and spend it wisely.

Many people are exposed to the concept of having their own money from an early age, receiving allowances weekly or monthly from their parents.

They are able to spend that money on anything they would like, as they

would from receiving a paycheck.

However, a paycheck has a much greater symbolic connotation to it. This is money that was earned through hard work, long hours and commitment.

When the paycheck is given, the feeling is not the same as receiving an allowance from parents.

“My allowance is $15 a week, and I use that money to pay for my food and any other things that I need,” Ari Cho said.

“I do not currently have a job, but I want one just to be able to provide for myself and ensure that I will not need to depend solely on my parent’s money every week.”

While being able to handle the financial aspects of receiving a paycheck is a huge deal, teenagers are also able to bask in the glory of being able to

Shop Of Horrors Takes Stage At PV High

Comedy Drama

• The dark comedy classic hits the stage just in time for the Halloween season.

The deviously delicious and horrifically humorous cult classic "Little Shop Of Horrors" will be presented by the Palos Verdes High School Drama Department for seven performances Oct. 27 - Nov. 5.

Take a musical journey through the streets of Skid Row to a struggling flower shop where a bloodthirsty plant from another world eagerly awaits its next victim. Full of delightfully demented humor, this long-running offBroadway musical comedy is based on Roger Corman’s B-movie and later turned into a Broadway show and an Academy Award-nominated film starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.

This campy classic features book and lyrics from Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, the legendary team behind the scores for Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

Enjoy a night of bloody good fun

that’s safe for the whole family with doo-wop-inspired songs like “Skid Row,” “Somewhere That’s Green,” “Feed Me” and “Suddenly, Seymour.”

The production stars Alex Katnic as Seymour, Adelaine Mollo as Audrey, Michael Ticknor as Orin, and Kailee Kakazu as Audrey II. Other principal actors include Thomas Applewhite (Mushnik), Abby Mohaddes (Crystal), Martha Williams (Ronnette), and Taylor Bockrath (Chiffon).

Heritage Students Help Hurricane Victims Here To Help

Student Council members at Peninsula Heritage School just concluded a two-week clothing drive for Houston, TX residents suffering from Hurricane Harvey. The students packed 12 large boxes of clothing for babies to adults, which will be shipped to the affected area.

“I felt sad about the people in Houston who were affected by Hurricane Harvey,” relates Dylan, a Student Council member. “I wanted to help, and I feel happy about what we did.”

What the students did was quite significant. Families of Peninsula Heritage students contributed significant amounts of new and gently used clothing and shoes. Mr. Patrick Nguyen, owner of ICDI, Inc. and husband of Student Council advisor Wendy Nguyen, donated new shoes and covered the cost of shipping the clothing to Houston.

A former Peninsula Heritage administrator now resides in one of the hard-hit areas of Houston, and she shared with Mrs. Nguyen the urgent need for clothing for all ages. The school’s donations will be received and dispersed in the affected neighborhoods of the city along with written notes and heart-felt good wishes from the children at Peninsula Heritage School.

“Once I learn how to handle my money and know how to save it up, I

know I will be more prepared for my future,” Lee said.

“While I might be working at a job that pays minimum wage right now, I can experience just the fact that I have a job. I am proud of my work and accomplishments, and I love where I work.”

The girls’ 10U Galaxy Girls have scored a total of 28 goals and are 6-00 this season. They’ll play the second place and undefeated Blue Asteroids today at Ernie Howlett Park.

In the always-competititve boys’ 12U Division, Real Madrid holds first place with a 4-0-0 record with three matches left in the regular season.

The high-scoring boys‘ 11U Division has three teams which have scored more than 20 goals this season. The Galaxy has top defense, allowing a total of nine goals in the crazy division.

Pop Warner Football Playoffs Underway Football

• All four Peninsula tackle football teams notched victories last weekend, while the Bobcat Division is set to begin playoff action this weekend.

The PV Navy Mavericks got a 28-8 win over the PV Gold Mavericks to finish the regular season undefeated in the Bobcat Division and will face the Culver City Bruins Blue today at Peninsula High.

Also in today’s Bobcat Division playoffs at Peninsula High, the PV Black Mavericks will play the PV Red Mavericks and the PV Gold Mavericks will play the PV Royal Mavericks. And the PV Navy Mavericks will play the Culver City Bruins Gold team.

In the tackle divisions last week, the Junior Pee Wee PV Mavericks defeated the Santa Clarita Raiders Black, 14-8, and will face the Pasadena Trojans today in semifinal playoff action.

The Mitey Mite PV Mavericks defeated the L.A. Valley Seahawks Green, 16-

13, and will play the El Segundo Eagles today.

The Pee Wee PV Mavericks got a big win over the El Segundo Eagles to begin their playoff run, and will face the Pasadena Trojans today.

The upper division Junior Varsity PV Mavericks defeated the Chatsworth Chiefs, 30-7, and will play the Carson Seminoles today in Pop Warner semifinal playoff action.
